• Uploading multiple files simultaneously with Flex

  I have been working on a flex uploader, where the user can select multiple files. It works fine when the files are uploaded in a queue (one at a time), however as soon as I try to have it upload 2 files at once I run into issues. It seems that files will often lock up, and either stay at 1% until every other file is uploaded, or just not complete at all. There is never more than one file uploading at a time. Is there some issue with calling .upload on multiple files at once in Flex?

• Compiling .NET component that uses a non specific required version of a 3rd Party Vendor component

  If someone were to develop a .NET component that relied on non specific versions of a vendor DLL - let's say it worked with My3rdPartyComponent.dll which is a .NET assembly, but it didn't matter which version. Some instances of classes found in this component would need to be passed into my component. Developers would reference my component dll but not have access to the source code. Basically, I want to be able to require the user to pass in an instance of 3rdPartyComponent.MyClass to my component functions but I do not care if it's version 1.1, 2.2, 2.23.980, etc of the 3rd party dll. Is there a way to do this while still typing the parameter I want to be passed in to my component? I don't want to use Object as the reference. In my component project I could specify SpecificVersion=True on the assembly reference. Will this solve my problem or will there be other 'dll hell' issues to deal with that I am not seeing?

  Dear all, I am doing a project in which I am working on security issues related to smart phones. I want to develop an authentication scheme which is based on biometrics, Every human being have a unique key-hold time,digraph time error rate. Key-Hold Time : Time difference between pressing and releasing a key . Digraph Time : Time difference between releasing one and pressing next one. Error Rate : No of times backspace is pressed. I got these metrics from a paper "Keystroke-based User Identification on Smart Phones" by Saira Zahid1, Muhammad Shahzad1, Syed Ali Khayam1,2, Muddassar Farooq1. I was planning to get the datasets to test my algorithm from openmoko phone, but the phone is mis-behaving and I am finding trouble in generating these time data-sets. • Can I use Win32 FreeType without the .dll file?

  Hello. I'm teaching myself OpenGL and I'm implementing ttf text rendering using FreeType 2. I downloaded the library from http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/freetype.htm and after a couple of minor issues I got it running properly. The thing that's bothering me is that I have to place a copy of freetype6.dll in the directory with my executable in order for the thing to run. I generally try to avoid a bunch of unnecessary dll files floating around. I'm sort of new to windows programming, but from what I understand most libraries can be built to run fully from a lib rather than requiring a dll at runtime. Looking through the documentation from FT is making my brain melt, so I thought I would ask here to see if there were any devs that have worked with FT before and if so, do they know how to build the library such that no dll is required at runtime. Thank you in advance for any advice or support.

• What do I use when a cron job isn't enough? (php)

  I'm trying to figure out the most efficient way to running a pretty hefty PHP task thousands of times a day. It needs to make an IMAP connection to Gmail, loop over the emails, save this info to the database and save images locally. Running this task every so often using a cron isn't that big of a deal, but I need to run it every minute and I know eventually the crons will start running on top of each other and cause memory issues. What is the next step up when you need to efficiently run a task multiple times a minute? I've been reading about beanstalk & pheanstalk and I'm not entirely sure if that will do what I need. Thoughts???

• Why does my Excel add-in only half work?

  I've created an Excel add-in using Visual Studio 2008. It has a ribbon, a bunch of panes and code that adds sheets and ranges and gets information scraped from a web page. When I run it on my dev PC it works perfectly. I used the Publish command to publich it and installed on a Windows XP virtual PC. The installation seemed fine and when I open Excel I see my ribbon. If I click a button that shows a pane, up pops the pane. If I enter some details into the pane that should create a range and populate it with data from a web page, the range is created but the web page is not visited (I have tested that I have connectivity). One of my buttons adds a hidden worksheet and another displays or hides that sheet. One of these buttons is not working. I've tried everything I can think of. I'm wondering if there are any permissions or trust issues I need to deal with?

• linux display drivers

  I've run into a major display problem on newly installed fedora 11, on my 6 years old pc which runs a pentium4 2.4 GHz processor, 1 gb ddr ram, intel 845 motherboard with integrated graphics card. When i open an image or play a video, my complete screen turns garbled. I simply cannot make out whats on my screen. With difficulty i have to close the image/video window and move around the folder window to clean the screen image. Is it because of my display drivers? How can i fix it? I also ran into mp3 plugins and flash issues which i was able to resovle. I'm new to linux, the sole purpose of isntalling it on my old pc was to learn linux but this display problem is frustrating me. Thanks, Salman

• skip-limit ignored for skippable exception thrown from writer

  i am working on a project with spring batch 2.0.2 and have skippable exception set up in the config. for exceptions thrown from the processor everything works fine. it skips and once the limit is execeed the job fails (or stops). for exceptions thrown from the writer (same chunk) it keeps skipping. the skip-limit doesnt seem to matter. maybe i missunderstood and skipping and writer don't go together or maybe i am missing a configuration. does anyone know how to skip issues - with a limit - within the writer properly?

• Safety of Amazon Community AMIs

  Hi, I am working for a scientific project and would like to use the Amazon EC2 to host the same. Now, I was going through the existing AMIs to create my own, but I found one AMI in the community list of AMIs - which fits perfectly. My question is the following - are the community AMIs safe? Is it possible for a malicious user to create an AMI in such a way that say the usernames/passwords etc can be sent to a remote server or something? Does Amazon do any sort of checking to make sure it cannot happen? I couldnt find the answers to these in Amazon site. I am pretty sure that you guys would have felt the same issues - could you please provide your answers? Regards K

• Windows Azure worker roles: One big job or many small jobs?

  Is there any inherent advantage when using multiple workers to process pieces of procedural code versus processing the entire load? In other words, if my workflow looks like this: Get work from queue0 and do A Store result from A in queue1 Get result from queue 1 and do B Store result from B in queue2 Get result from queue2 and do C Is there an inherent advantage to using 3 workers who each do the entire process themselves versus 3 workers that each do a part of the work (Worker 1 does 1 & 2, worker 2 does 3 & 4, worker 3 does 5). If we only care about working being done (finished with step 5) it would seem that it scales the same way (once you're using at least 3 workers). Maybe the big job is better because workers with that setup have less bottleneck issues?

• Check to see if file transfer is complete

  We have a daily job that processes files delivered from an external source. The process usually runs fine without any issues but every once in a while we have an issue of attempting to process a file that is not completely transferred. The external source SCPs these files from a UNIX server to our Windows server. From there we try to process the files. Is there a way to check to see if a file is still being transferred? Does UNIX put a lock on a file while SCPing it that we could check on the Windows side?

In Espos answer, an 'override' problem is illustrated. Is this the only reason, or are there any other problems? Compatibility issues?

• C, Cygwin, and compiling drand and srand

  Hello, I have a C code which I am trying to compile in Cygwin and which contains both the drand() and srand() functions. I had Windows Vista with Cygwin installed and the code seemed to comile fine, but my computer broke and I had to get a new one. The new computer has Windows 7 64-bit version. I had a few issues downloading Cygwin but finally managed to do it by only selecting a few packages and then have been trying to get the rest that I need. The problem is I don't have the help I had installing it on my other computer so I don't know which packages I actually need, so I have just been guessing (all the gcc ones) but I mustn't have the one I need for srand and drand to work. If anyone could point me in the right direction, and also possibly just let me know which packages I need to compile C so I can check I have them all that would be great.   I am having issues with authentication for my webview I have a https address that requires authentication but it isn't basic authentication. When I access chrome on my phone and go to this site I get a dialogue box that asks me for a username and password I want to do something similar but all the attempts at authentication I have made have failed using the what I have found as they all seem to be for basic authentication and I don't think this is what it is. any help is appreciated, sorry if this is duplicate but I have looked and found nothing similar .

• Is it possible to use IPC inside of a IE8 Browser Helper Object?

  I need to communicate with a Service using IPC from inside of a Browser Helper Object (registered with IE8). Unfortunately, all of this communication is done through an Assembly API that I have no control over. Whenever this API starts up I get the following error: ExceptionSystem.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingException: Failed to connect to an IPC Port: The system cannot find the file specified. I realize that it is difficult to discern what the issue is without source. However I am curious if anyone knows of anything sort of permissions or DLL issues that would prevent IPC from working in this case.

• Phantom updates due to decimal precision on calculated properties

  This article describes my problem. I have several properties that are calculated. These are typed as decimal(9,2) in SQL Server and decimal in my C# classes. An example of the problem is: Object is loaded with a property value of 14.9 A calculation is performed and the property value is changed to 14.90393 When the session is flushed, NHibernate issues an update because the property is dirty Since the database field is decimal (9,2) the stored value doesn't change Basically a phantom update is issued every time this object is loaded. I don't want to truncate the calculations in my business objects because that tightly couples them to the database and I don't want to lose the precision in other calculations. I tried setting scale and precision or CustomType("Decimal(9,2)") in the mapping file but this appears to only affect schema generation. My only reasonable option appears to be creating an IUserType implementation to handle this. Is there a better solution?

• Assert parameters in a table-valued UDF

  Is there a way to create "asserts" on the parameters of a table-valued UDF. I'd like to use a table-valued UDF for performance reasons, however I know that certain parameter combinations (like start and end dates that are more than a month apart) will cause performance issues on the server for all users. End users query the database via Excel using UDFs. UDFs (and table-valued UDFs in particular) are useful when the data is too large for Excel. Users write simple SQL queries that categorizes the data into groups to reduce the number of rows. For example, the user may be interested in weekly aggregates rather than hourly ones. Users write a group by SELECT statement to reduce the rows by 24x7=168 times. I know I can write RAISERROR statements in multistatement UDFs, but table-valued UDFs are integrated in the query optimizer so these queries are more efficient with table-valued UDFs. So, can I define assertions on the parameters passed to a table-valued UDF?

• How to make an HTTP request in a separate thread with timeout?

  Hi, I haven't programmed in Delphi for a while and frankly didn't think I'll ever have to but... Here I am, desperately trying to find some information on the matter and it's so scarce nowadays, I can't find anything. So maybe you guys could help me out. Currently my application uses Synapse library to make HTTP calls, but it doesn't allow for setting a timeout. Usually, that's not a big problem, but now I absolutely must to have a timeout to handle any connectivity issues nicely. What I'm looking for, is a library (synchronous or not) that will allow making HTTP requests absolutely transparent for the user with no visible or hidden delays. I can't immediately kill a thread right now, and with possibility of many frequent requests to the server that is not responding, it's no good.

• SQL Server: One large persisted computed column for Fulltext Indexing

  It appears to me as the easiest, most straightforward solution, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Instead of having a fulltext index on all individual columns of a table, isn't it better to just generate one single wide computed column and run the fulltext index against that only? It appears to me that it gets rid of all the issues of having multiple columns, incl. that I can't search "x AND y" as this will not match a row with "x" present in column 1 and "y" present in column 2. Any counterarguments?

• Linux - Create ftp account with read/write access to only 1 folder

  Hey guys.... I have never worked on linux and dont plan on working on it either - The only command I probably know is "ls" :) I am hosting my website on Eapps and use their cpanel to setup everything so never worked with linux. Now I have this one time case - where I need to provide access to a contractor to fix the CSS issues on my website. He basically needs FTP (read/write) access to certain folders. At a high level - this is my code structure /home/webadmin/example.com/html/images /css /js /login.php /facebook.php /home/webadmin/example.com/application/library /views /models /controllers /config /bootstrap.php /home/webadmin/example.com/cgi-bin I want the new user to be able to have access to only these folders /home/webadmin/example.com/html/js /home/webadmin/example.com/html/css /home/webadmin/example.com/application/views He should not be able to view even the content of other folders including files like bootstrap.php or login.php etc If any sys admins can help me set this account up - will really appreciate it. • IBM RAD With Java 1.5 wont compile code with generics

  Hello I have some code that has generic references in it and my IBM RAD IDE will not compile the code, instead treating it as an error. I have checked the version of the JRE its pointing to across all the Enterprise Project's and it is 1.5 which I am told does support generics. Also I checked that all the libraries for WAS were pointing to the correct version and that the Compiler Compliance Level was set correctly (which it was at 5.0 and i changed it to 6.0 with no luck either) Does anyone have any suggestions as to anything else I can try? I have issues like this with RAD all the time and I dont know about anyone else but they took eclipse and made it complicated and dysfunctional.

You can also design your application so that the XML processing is memory and time constrained. For example, configure time-out limits in your ASP.NET application. Can someone please explain the issue? Why would a reader application want to prohibit the retrieval of a DTD? Where is the denial-of-service issue, if it is a reading application? • added TextToSpeech to my activity and now my onDestroy is not called any more, bug?

It seems that it is the intent that causes the problem, i.e. the following: Intent checkIntent = new Intent(); checkIntent.setAction(TextToSpeech.Engine.ACTION_CHECK_TTS_DATA); startActivityForResult(checkIntent, MY_DATA_CHECK_CODE); If I skip this intent, and just go ahead and create a tts-instance, it works fine. • What are the pros and cons of using an in memory DB rather than a ThreadLocal

  We have been using ThreadLocal so far to carry some data so as to not clutter the API. However below are some of issues of using thread local that which I don't like: 1) Over the years the data items being carried in thread local has increased 2) Since we started using threads (for some light weight processing), we have also migrating these data to the threads in the pool and copying them back again I am thinking of using an in memory DB for these (we doesn't want to add this to the API). I wondering if this approach is good. What are the pros and cons? thx in advance.
