• WCF Service Memory Leaks

  Dear Devs I have a very small wcf service hosted in a console app. [ServiceContract] public interface IService1 { [OperationContract] void DoService(); } [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode=InstanceContextMode.PerCall)] public class Service1 : IService1 { public void DoService() { } } and its being called as using (ServiceReference1.Service1Client client = new ServiceReference1.Service1Client()) { client.DoService(new DoServiceRequest()); client.Close(); } Please remember that service is published on basicHttpBindings. Problem Now when i performed above client code in a loop of 1000 i found big difference between "All Heap bytes" and "Private Bytes" performance counters (i used .net memory profiler). After investigation i found some of the objects are not properly disposed following are the list of those objects (1000 undisposed instance were found -- equals to the client calls) (namespace for all of them is System.ServiceModel.Channels) HttpOutput.ListenerResponseHttpOutput.ListenerResponseOutputStream BodyWriterMessage BufferedMessage HttpRequestContext.ListenerHttpContext.ListenerContextHttpInput.ListenerContextInputStream HttpRequestContext.ListenerHttpContext Questions Why do we have lot of undisposed objects and how to control them. • MySQL: Count two things in one query?

  I have a "boolean" column in one of my tables (value is either 0 or 1). I need to get two counts: The number of rows that have the boolean set to 0 and the number of rows that have it set to 1. Currently I have two queries: One to count the 1's and the other to count the 0's. Is MySQL traversing the entire table when counting rows with a WHERE condition? I'm wondering if there's a single query that would allow two counters based on different conditions? Or is there a way to get the total count along side the WHERE conditioned count? This would be enough as I'd only have to subtract one count from the other (due to the boolean nature of the column). There are no NULL values. Thanks.

  Let's say I have to generate a bunch of result files, and I want to make it as fast as possible. Each result file is generated independently of any other result file; in fact, one could say that each result file is agnostic to every other result file. The resources used to generate each result file is also unique to each. How can I dynamically decide the optimal number of threads to run simultaneously in order to minimize the overall run time? Is my only option to write my own thread manager that watches performance counters and adjust accordingly or does there exists some solid classes that already accomplish this?

  I'm using table with a counter to ensure unique id's on a child element. I know it is usually better to use a sequence, but I can't use it because I have a lot of counters (a customer can create a couple of buckets and each of them needs to have their own counter, they have to start with 1 (it's a requirement, my customer needs "human readable" keys). I'm creating records (let's call them items) that have a prikey (bucket_id, num = counter). I need to guarantee that the bucket_id / num combination is unique (so using a sequence as prikey won't fix my problem). The creation of rows doesn't happen in pl/sql, so I need to claim the number (btw: it's not against the requirements to have gaps). My solution was: UPDATE bucket SET counter = counter + 1 WHERE id = param_id RETURNING counter INTO num_forprikey; PL/SQL returns var_num_forprikey so the item record can be created. Question: Will I always get unique num_forprikey even if the user concurrently asks for new items in a bucket?

  OK 1ST SOME BACKGROUND - I have a page showing the number of hits(or views) of any selected item. The hit counter procedure that is called at every page load i.e if (Request.QueryString.HasKeys()) { // get item id from icoming url e.g details.aspx?itemid=26 string itemid = Request.Params["itemid"]; if (!Page.IsPostBack) { countHit(itemid); } } THE PROBLEM - My expectation was that the counter would be increased by 1 on every page load but the counters on my datalist and formview are always behind and stepped by 2 i.e instead of 1, 2, 3, 4 its - 0, 2 , 4, 6 It seems that the page load is firing twice. Later I discovered that this only happens when you are using Mozilla Firefox. The page behaves fine with other browsers like IE This becoming quite frustrating. CAN ANY1 HELP :-(

  Django (1.2 beta) will reset the database(s) between every test that runs, meaning each test runs on an empty DB. However, the database(s) are not flushed. One of the effects of flushing the database is the auto_increment counters are reset. Consider a test which pulls data out of the database by primary key: class ChangeLogTest(django.test.TestCase): def test_one(self): do_something_which_creates_two_log_entries() log = LogEntry.objects.get(id=1) assert_log_entry_correct(log) log = LogEntry.objects.get(id=2) assert_log_entry_correct(log) This will pass because only two log entries were ever created. However, if another test is added to ChangeLogTest and it happens to run before test_one, the primary keys of the log entries are no longer 1 and 2, they might be 2 and 3. Now test_one fails. This is actually a two part question: Is it possible to force ./manage.py test to flush the database between each test case? Since Django doesn't flush the DB between each test by default, maybe there is a good reason. Does anyone know?

• How to research unmanaged memory leaks in .NET?

  I have a WCF service running over MSMQ. Memory gradually increases over time, indicating that there is some sort of memory leak. I ran the service locally and monitored some counters using PerfMon. Total CLR memory managed heap bytes remains relatively constant, while the process' private bytes increases over time. This leads me to believe that there is some sort of unmanaged memory leak. Assuming that unmanaged memory leak is the issue, how do I address the issue? Are there any tools I could use to give me hints as to what is causing the unmanaged memory leak? Also, all my service is doing is reading from the transactional queue and writing to a database, all as part of a DTC transaction (handled under the hood by requiring a transaction on the service contract). I am not doing anything explicitly with COM or DllImports. Thanks in advance!

  Hi All. I am new to sqlite and SQL in general. I am keen to switch from flat-files to sqlite for holding some measurement information. I need a tip on how to better layout the database, since I have zero experience with this. I have a ~10000 unique statistic counters that are collected before and after each test iteration. Max number of iterations are 10, though it could be less. I was thinking the following: CREATE TABLE stat_names(stat_id, stat_name); CREATE TABLE stats_per_iteration(stat_id, before_iter_1, after_iter_1, before_iter_2, after_iter_2, ...); stat_names table would hold mapping of a full counter to a uniq stat_id. stats_per_iteration table would hold mesurement data 1 + 10 * 2 columns. stat_names.stat_id = stats_per_iteration.stat_id OR maybe I should have a separate table for each iteration? Which would results in 1 + 10 tables in database. Thanks!

  The problem: I am unable to use OutputCaching with my controls which derives from MyCustomControl. Controls are loaded dynamically using definitions from database with Page.LoadControl method. When I add to ascx <%@ OutputCache VaryByParam="*" Duration="3600"% the "InvalidCastException: System.Web.UI.PartialCachingControl - MyCustomControl" exception is thrown. I am unable to modify assembly witch contains dynamic loading controls logic. Is there any way to fix it in derived controls? The second question is about iis7 and native output caching - is it resolves this problem? (I tried to set up several performance counters and I saw that cache wasn't hit...)

  This week we had the fifth webcast in our WebCenter in Action webcast series, "Los Angeles Department of Building & Safety Lowers Customer Service Costs with Oracle WebCenter", where customers Giovani Dacumos and Minh Ong from the Los Angeles Department of Building & Safety (LADBS), and Sheetal Paranjpye and Rajiv Desai from Oracle Partner 3Di, shared how Oracle WebCenter is powering LADBS' externally facing website and providing a superior self-service experience for their customers. We asked the speakers to provide some dialogue for Q&A.   Giovani Dacumos, Director of Systems and Minh Ong, LADBS Q: Did you run into any issues when integrating all of the different applications together?A: Yes. We did have issues integrating a secure sign on between the portal and other legacy applications. We used portlets and iframes to overcome those.  This is a new technology for us and we are also learning as we go so there were a lot of challenges in developing and implementing our vision. Q: What has been the biggest benefit your end users have seen?A: The biggest benefit for our ends users is ease-of-use. We've given them a system that provided a new and improved source of information, as well as a very organized flow of transaction processing. It has made our online service very user friendly. Q: Was there any resistance internally when implementing the solution? If so, how did you overcome that?A: There was no internal resistance during the implementation, only challenges. As mentioned earlier, this is a new technology for us. We've come across issues that needed assistance from Oracle. Working with 3Di and Oracle has helped us tremendously to find solutions to our implementation issues. Q: Given the performance, what do you estimate to be the top end capacity of the system? A: With the current performance and architecture we have, we are able to support approx 300-400 concurrent users.  We would need more hardware to support additional user load. Q: What's the overview or summary of feedback from the users interacting with the site?A: LADBS has a wide spectrum of customers, from simple users like homeowners to large construction firms. Anything new that we offer could be a little bit challenging for some, but overall, the customers liked it. They saw a huge improvement on the usability. Q: Can you describe the impressions about the site before and after the project within LADBS?A: The old site was using old technology and it was hard for us to keep on building into it as we got more business requirements. It made our application seem a bit complicated.  It was confusing for our new customers to use and we've improved on this with the new site. It's now easier for them to complete their transactions and, at the same time, allowed us to provide more useful information. Sheetal Paranjpye and Rajiv Desai, 3Di Q: Did you run into any obstacles when implementing the solution?A: Yes we did run into some obstacles. One of the key show stoppers was the issue with portlet to portal communication. The GIS viewer (portlet) needed information to be passed  to and from Permit LA (Portal), but we were able to get everything configured and up and working quickly! Q: Was there a lot of custom work that needed to be done for this particular solution?A: We have done some customizations where workflows/ Task flows are involved.  Q: What do you think were the keys to success for rolling out WebCenter?A: Having a service oriented architecture and using portlets have been the key areas for rolling out Oracle WebCenter at LADBS. The Oracle WebCenter Content integration allows the flexibility to business users to maintain the content, which has really cut down on the reliance of IT, and employee productivity has increased as a result. • TestDriven.Net 3.0 – All Systems Go

  I’m pleased to announce that TestDriven.Net 3.0 is now available. Finally! I know many of you will already be using the Beta and RC versions, but if you look at the release notes you’ll see there’s been many refinements since then, so I highly recommend you install the RTM version. Here is a quick summary of a few new features: Visual Studio 2010 supports targeting multiple versions of the .NET framework (multi-targeting). This means you can easily upgrade your Visual Studio 2005/2008 solutions without necessarily converting them to use .NET 4.0. TestDriven.Net will execute your tests using the .NET version your test project is targeting (see ‘Properties > Application > Target framework’). There is now first class support for MSTest when using Visual Studio 2008 & 2010. Previous versions of TestDriven.Net had support for a limited number of MSTest attributes. This version supports virtually all MSTest unit testing related attributes, including support for deployment item and data driven test attributes. You should also find this test runner is quick. ;) There is a new ‘Go To Test/Code’ command on the code context menu. You can think of this as Ctrl-Tab for test driven developers; it will quickly flip back and forth between your tests and code under test. I recommend assigning a keyboard shortcut to the ‘TestDriven.NET.GoToTestOrCode’ command. NCover can now be used for code coverage on .NET 4.0. This is only officially supported since NCover 3.2 (your mileage may vary if you’re using the 1.5.8 version). Rather than clutter the ‘Output’ window, ignored or skipped tests will be placed on the ‘Task List’. You can double-click on these items to navigate to the offending test (or assign a keyboard shortcut to ‘View.NextTask’). If you’re using a Team, Premium or Ultimate edition of Visual Studio 2005-2010, a new ‘Test With > Performance’ command will be available. This command will perform instrumented performance profiling on your target code. A particular focus of this version has been to make it more keyboard friendly. Here’s a list of commands you will probably want to assign keyboard shortcuts to: Name Default What I use TestDriven.NET.RunTests Run tests in context   Alt + T TestDriven.NET.RerunTests Repeat test run   Alt + R TestDriven.NET.GoToTestOrCode Flip between tests and code   Alt + G TestDriven.NET.Debugger Run tests with debugger   Alt + D View.Output Show the ‘Output’ window Ctrl+ Alt + O   Edit.BreakLine Edit code in stack trace Enter   View.NextError Jump to next failed test Ctrl + Shift + F12   View.NextTask Jump to next skipped test   Alt + S   By default the ‘Output’ window will automatically activate when there is test output or a failed test (this is an option). The cursor will be positioned on the stack trace of the last failed test, ready for you to hit ‘Enter’ to jump to the fail point or ‘Esc’ to return to your source (assuming your ‘Output’ window is set to auto-hide).  If your ‘Output’ window isn’t set to auto-hide, you’ll need to hit ‘Ctrl + Alt + O’ then ‘Enter’. Facilmente encontramos hoje máquinas clientes com 2, 4 e até 8 núcleos, sem considerar os “super-servidores” com até 36 processadores :) Da wikipedia: A Unidade central de processamento (CPU, de acordo com as iniciais em inglês) ou o processador é a parte de um sistema de computador que executa as instruções de um programa de computador, e é o elemento primordial na execução das funções de um computador. Este termo tem sido usado na indústria de computadores pelo menos desde o início dos anos 1960[1]. A forma, desenho e implementação de CPUs têm mudado dramaticamente desde os primeiros exemplos, mas o seu funcionamento fundamental permanece o mesmo. Fazendo uma analogia, seria muito interessante delegarmos tarefas no mundo real que podem ser executadas independentemente a pessoas diferentes, atingindo desta forma uma  maior performance / produtividade na sua execução. A computação paralela se baseia na idéia que um problema maior pode ser dividido em problemas menores, sendo resolvidos de forma paralela. Este pensamento é utilizado há algum tempo por HPC (High-performance computing), e através das facilidades dos últimos anos, assim como a preocupação com consumo de energia, tornaram esta idéia mais atrativa e de fácil acesso a qualquer ambiente. No .NET Framework A plataforma .NET apresenta um runtime, bibliotecas e ferramentas para fornecer uma base de acesso fácil e rápido à programação paralela, sem trabalhar diretamente com threads e thread pool. Task Parallel Library A TPL é um conjunto de tipos localizados no namespace System.Threading e System.Threading.Tasks, a partir da versão 4 do framework. Data Parallelism Ainda parte da TPL, o Data Parallelism se refere a cenários onde a mesma operação deva ser executada paralelamente em elementos de uma coleção ou array, através de instruções paralelas For e ForEach. A idéia básica é pegar cada elemento da coleção (ou array) e trabalhar com diversas threads concomitantemente. • Some VS 2010 RC Updates (including patches for Intellisense and Web Designer fixes)

Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] We are continuing to make progress on shipping Visual Studio 2010.  I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has downloaded and tried out the VS 2010 Release Candidate, and especially to those who have sent us feedback or reported issues with it. This data has been invaluable in helping us find and fix remaining bugs before we ship the final release. Last month I blogged about a patch we released for the VS 2010 RC that fixed a bad intellisense crash issue.  This past week we released two additional patches that you can download and apply to the VS 2010 RC to immediately fix two other common issues we’ve seen people run into: Patch that fixes crashes with Tooltip invocation and when hovering over identifiers The Visual Studio team recently released a second patch that fixes some crashes we’ve seen when tooltips are displayed – most commonly when hovering over an identifier to view a QuickInfo tooltip. Patch that fixes issues with the Web Forms designer not correctly adding controls to the auto-generated designer files The Visual Web Developer team recently released a patch that fixes issues where web controls are not correctly added to the .designer.cs file associated with the .aspx file – which means they can’t be programmed against in the code-behind file.  This issue is most commonly described as “controls are not being recognized in the code-behind” or “editing existing .aspx files regenerates the .aspx.designer.(vb or cs) file and controls are now missing” or “I can’t embed controls within the Ajax Control Toolkit TabContainer or the <asp:createuserwizard> control”. Common Cause of Intellisense and IDE sluggishness on Windows XP, Vista, Win Server 2003/2008 systems Over the last few months we’ve occasionally seen reports of people seeing tremendous slowness when typing and using intellisense within VS 2010 despite running on decent machines.  It took us awhile to track down the cause – but we have found that the common culprit seems to be that these machines don’t have the latest versions of the UIA (Windows Automation) component installed. UIA 3 ships with Windows 7, and is a recommended Windows Update patch on XP and Vista (which is why we didn’t see the problem in our tests – since our machines are patched with all recommended updates).  Many systems (especially on XP) don’t automatically install recommended updates, though, and are running with older versions of UIA. This can cause significant performance slow-downs within the VS 2010 editor when large lists are displayed (for example: with intellisense). If you are running on Windows XP, Vista, or Windows Server 2003 or 2008 and are seeing any performance issues with the editor or IDE, please install the free UIA 3 update that can be downloaded from this page.  If you scroll down the page you’ll find direct links to versions for each OS. Note that we are making improvements to the final release of VS 2010 so that we don’t have big perf issues when UIA 3 isn’t installed – and we are also adding a message within the IDE that will warn you if you don’t have UIA 3 installed and accessibility is activated. Improved Text Rendering with WPF 4 and VS 2010 We recently made some nice changes to WPF 4 which improve the text clarity and text crispness over what was in the VS 2010/.NET 4 Release Candidate.  In particular these changes improve scenarios where you have a dark background with light text. • IntelliTrace As a Learning Tool for MVC2 in a VS2010 Project

  IntelliTrace is a new feature in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Edition. I see this valuable tool as a “Program Execution Recorder” that captures information about events and calls taking place as soon as we hit the VS2010 play (Start Debugging) button or the F5 key. Many online resources already discuss IntelliTrace and the benefit it brings to both developers and testers alike so I see no value of just repeating this information.  In this brief blog entry, I would like to share with you how I will be using IntelliTrace in my upcoming talk at the Ft Lauderdale ArcSig .Net User Group Meeting on April 20th 2010 (check http://www.fladotnet.com for more information), as a learning tool to demonstrate the internals of the lifecycle of an MVC2 application.  I will also be providing some helpful links that cover IntelliTrace in more detail at the end of my article for reference. IntelliTrace is setup by default to only capture execution events. Microsoft did such a great job on optimizing its recording process that I haven’t even felt the slightest performance hit with IntelliTrace running as I was debugging my solutions and projects.  For my purposes here however, I needed to capture more information beyond execution events, so I turned on the option for capturing calls in addition to events as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Changing capture options will require us to stop our debugging session and start over for the new settings to take place. Figure 1 – Access IntelliTrace options via the Tools->Options menu items Figure 2 – Change IntelliTrace Options to capture call information as well as events Notice the warning with regards to potentially degrading performance when selecting to capture call information in addition to the default events-only setting. I have found this warning to be sure true. My subsequent tests showed slowness in page load times compared to rendering those same exact pages with the “event-only” option selected. Execution recording is auto-started along with the new debugging session of our project. At this point, we can simply interact with the application and continue executing normally until we decide to “playback” the code we have executed so far.  For code replay, first step is to “break” the current execution as show in Figure 3.   Figure 3 – Break to replay recording A few tries later, I found a good process to quickly find and demonstrate the MVC2 page lifecycle. First-off, we start with the event view as shown in Figure 4 until we find an interesting event that needs further studying.  Figure 4 – Going through IntelliTrace’s events and picking as specific entry of interest We now can, for instance, study how the highlighted HTTP GET request is being handled, by clicking on the “Calls View” for that particular event. Notice that IntelliTrace shows us all calls that took place in servicing that GET request. Double clicking on any call takes us to a more granular view of the call stack within that clicked call, up until getting to a specific line of code where we can do a line-by-line replay of the execution from that point onwards using F10 or F11 just like our typical good old VS2008 debugging helped us accomplish. In conclusion, the introduction of IntelliTrace as a new addition to the VS developers’ tool arsenal enhances development and debugging experience and effectively tackles the “no-repro” problem. It will also hopefully enhance my audience’s experience listening to me speaking about  an MVC2 page lifecycle which I can now easily visually demonstrate, thereby improving the probability of keeping everybody awake a little longer.
