  I am a junior Java SE developer, planning to become a Java Standard Edition professional. Which technologies/frameworks will be the smartest thing for me to learn? I will invest a lot of time and energy on the technologies that I eventually choose and it will be the basis for my carreer. I need to choose carefully. I have one question in particular regarding Oracle ADF: How can it be better than Spring or EJB 3.x? No offense to the ADF developers - and please excuse my ignorance - but is there a reason for using ADF other than locking customers to Oracle products? If ADF is an inferior technology I fear I will be making a mistake choosing to specialize in ADF.

  I'm writing the bibliography of my report with thebibliography environment because I don't need a BibTeX database (or I don't have the time for learn how to customize or write a style). Well, using the optional argument [label] I can specify as I want the cite references are show, for example: \bibitem[PNUD1996]{PNUD1996} PNUD. Desarrollo Humano en Chile 1996. Santiago: PNUD, 1996. So, if I write: in \cite{PNUD1996}. it produces: in [PNUD1996]. But the label also appear in the bibliography: [PNUD1996] PNUD. Desarrollo Humano en Chile 1996. Santiago: PNUD, 1996. Can I to remove the label from the bibliography and keeping it in the reference? I mean, to get: in [PNUD1996]. and PNUD. Desarrollo Humano en Chile 1996. Santiago: PNUD, 1996. • What exactly is a Monad?

  Can someone please explain to me what a Monad is. I think I grasp Monoids and I grasp that they basically control the input of state into a system. I just look at the text in Haskell and glaze over. A simple example in python would be great. My current understanding is that a Monoid is a procedural piece of code that needs to be read from top to bottom in sequence with the output being the input for the function. I think that I may even got that wrong, but hey I am here to learn.

• C++ input chaining in C#

  I am trying to learn C# coming from C++. I am writing just some basic console stuff to get a feel for it and was wondering if it is possible to do simple chaining of inputs in C#. For example in C++: cout<<"Enter two numbers: "; cin >> int1 >> int2; You could then just input 3 5 and hit enter and the values will be fine. In C# however I have to split it up(as far as I can tell) like this: Console.Write("Enter the first number: "; int1 = (char)Console.Read(); Console.Writeline(""); Console.Write("Enter the second number: "; int2 = (char)Console.Read(); Maybe I am just missing something.

Security is a major concern and I'd like to learn from some of the popular PHP CMS's like Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, etc. What are some security flaws or vulnerabilities that they have they had in the past that I can avoid in my application and what strategies can I use to avoid them? What are other issues that I need to be concerned with that they perhaps didn't face as a vulnerability because they handled it correctly from the start? What additional security features or measures would you include? Please be as specific as possible. I'm generally aware of most of the usual attack vectors, but I want to make sure that all the bases are covered, so don't be afraid to mention the obvious as well. Assume PHP 5.2+.

  For the past month or so, I have been busting my behind trying to learn DirectX. So I've been mixing back back and forth between DirectX 9 and 10. One of the major changes I've seen in the two is how to process vectors in the graphics card. One of the drastic changes I notice is how you get the GPU to recognize your structs. In DirectX 9, you define the Flexible Vertex Formats. Your typical set up would be like this: #define CUSTOMFVF (D3DFVF_XYZRHW | D3DFVF_DIFFUSE) In DirectX 10, I believe the equivalent is the input vertex description: D3D10_INPUT_ELEMENT_DESC layout[] = { {"POSITION",0,DXGI_FORMAT_R32G32B32_FLOAT, 0 , 0, D3D10_INPUT_PER_VERTEX_DATA, 0}, {"COLOR",0,DXGI_FORMAT_R32G32B32A32_FLOAT, 0 , 12, D3D10_INPUT_PER_VERTEX_DATA, 0} }; I notice in DirectX 10 that it is more descriptive. Besides this, what are some of the drastic changes made, and is the HLSL syntax the same for both?

I'm already answering project Euler questions, but these questions are about interesting, but uncommon algorithms. I hardly used even a simple tree. Maybe there is a site with exercises like: hey, you need to calculate this: ... . Do it using a tree. Now do it using a zipper. Upload your C (Haskell, Lisp, even Pascal or Fortress go) solution. Oh, your solution is so slow! Self-education is very hard then you trying to learn very common, fundamental things. How can I help myself with them without attending to courses or whatever?

  Hello, I have a set of Books objects, classs Book is defined as following : Class Book{ String title; ArrayList<tags> taglist; } Where title is the title of the book, example : Javascript for dummies. and taglist is a list of tags for our example : Javascript, jquery, "web dev", .. As I said a have a set of books talking about different things : IT, BIOLOGY, HISTORY, ... Each book has a title and a set of tags describing it.. I have to classify automaticaly those books into separated sets by topic, example : IT BOOKS : Java for dummies Javascript for dummies Learn flash in 30 days C++ programming HISTORY BOOKS : World wars America in 1960 Martin luther king's life BIOLOGY BOOKS : ....   I'm trying to learn PHP and I wish to know if there are some function equivalence constructs: In JS I can do: var t = function() {}; t(); myObj.DoStuff = function() {} // here I add a method at run-time myObj.DoStuff(); myObj["DoStuff"](); var j = myObj.DoStuff; j(); and so other things with function evaluation. In Js objects are associative arrays so every properties is accessible with the subscript notation... Can I add a method at run-time to a class template so next its object instances can have it? In JS I can do that via a prototype function property.

• How to package up a Python 3 script with modules

  I created a small script that uses a few 3rd-party modules. I'm not sure how to distribute it. I tried Pyinstaller, but that doesn't seem to work. It can't find the modules. When I give the binary to a co-worker, it says it is looking for files in my home directory ( not his ) and dies. I have found that Pyinstaller is not able to find most modules. I am running Python 3 and installed Pyinstaller with pip from Python 2. It did not work trying to use pip from Python 3. When, I give it a path to my modules, it complains that they are python 3 modules. Just looking for some clarification. Ultimately, I'd like to run this on a linux or OS X box where python and my modules probably won't be installed. I just started Python yesterday and have a ton to learn.

• Are there programming languages taht rely on non-latin alphabets?

  Every programming language I have ever seen has been based on the Latin alphabet, this is not surprising considering I live in Canada... But it only really makes sense that there would be programming languages based on other alphabets, or else bright computer scientists across the world would have to learn a new alphabet to go on in the field. I know for a fact that people in countries dominated by other alphabets develop languages based off the Latin alphabet (eg. Ruby from Japan), but just how common is it for programming languages to be based off of other alphabets like Arabic, or Cyrillic, or even writing systems which are not alphabetic but rather logographic in nature such as Japanese Kanji? Also are any of these languages in active widespread use, or are they mainly used as teaching tools? This is something that has bugged me since I started programming, and I have never run across someone who could think of a real answer.

• How do I create queries to SQL Server tables via Visual Studio when no knowledge about SQL nor Linq?

  Let´s be frank, my knowledge regarding SQL language is very low. Nevertheless, my boss gave me the task to build a database application using the following tools: SQL Server and Visual Studio 2008; C#. I use the VS DataSet as a local mirror of the SQL Server. And let´s be frank again, my understanding of the VS Query builder is also very small, I´m finding it quite confusing, actually. So no help to find from Query builder. And my knowledge of Linq is even lower... Perhaps I should mention that the deadline for the project is "aggressively" set, so I have no chance to learn enough about these things during the project. And I´m a bit stupid too, which is no help when it comes to challenges like this (on other occations it might be quite useful though) With these permissions, what should I do (except for killing myself or retire) to be able to query my tables in a sufficient way?

We have the ideas written down like 100's of them (yes we are choosing best and easy among them first). My friend does the layout design and arranging things , and my part is coding and server management. The little problem i am facing is lack of experience in planing a project. What i do is, I just start the code straight away and along with code I make DB, like when i need a table i make it. I know this is very bad approach for a medium sized project. • is Web Development moving too fast?

  I find myself constantly learning new things in web development and there is always soo much to learn in general. Currently i work with PHP and have tried to keep up with Ruby on Rails(RoR) but it's moving so fast i'm not sure i can keep up with the latest changes. I know this must be a relatively trivial query to write (and therefore to find instructions for), but I can't seem to come up with the right search terms. Searching "SQL recursive queries" has gotten me closest, but I can't quite translate those methods to what I'm trying to do here. I'm trying to learn, so multiple methods are welcome, as is vocabulary I should read up on. Thanks!

• Xhtml instead of Php?

  I want to develop a site that will allow be to publish information to users, and give them and opportunity to subscribe to a mailing list so they can be updated each time I make a change to the site. *Add new information, etc. I also would like for the users to be able to add comments about reviews posted, and give me suggestions...Things that will encourage user interaction I understand that this is possible with php... But I do not know php, and to learn and test it I apparently need a domain to begin with...etc. Is it possible that I use Xhtml/Html to get the same results? -- I know I can use the <a href="mailto:[email protected]"; subject="Email from Site user">Mail</a> but that would also leave my email open to spam...Any suggestions? And I do apologize if this question has been posted before, I did some research and found no such thing. All helpful responses are appreciated.

  Hello all, I have three weeks to perform the following basic task. I wish to create an online form in PHP that will get 5 numbers and with them: save the numbers to a MySQL DB do a simple computation on the numbers and return them as an output to the visitor I already have a domain, hosting and a MySQL database+user. I don't know PHP, or SQL or databases. I do have prior knowledge in C and R (which means I have some of the basics of programming, and I am not intimidated of a new languages). My question are: Am I missing something? is there some other skill I should have for this task that I don't know of? What is a good way to learn the skills needed for the task I described?   Hiya, I'm trying to learn how to set up Webtrends Analytics to segment paid search properly. I've dug up the fact that you need to pass "WT.srch=1" over in the url from the advert, but are there other parameters which you can use to segment: Campaign Adgroup Ad network I know you can do this with Google Analtics at the drop of a button using the various UTM tags, but Webtrends seems to use the proprietary WT. tags. Yet I can only find one tag... wtf :P Anyone able to help? Thanks! H

• Where does complexity bloat from?

  Many of our design decisions are based on our gut feeling about how to avoid complexity and bloating. Some of our complexity-fears are true, we have plenty of painful experience on throwing away deprecated code. Other times we learn that some particular task isn't really that complex as we though it to be. We notice for example that upkeeping 3000 lines of code in one file isn't that difficult... or that using special purpose "dirty flags" isn't really bad OO practice... or that in some cases it's more convenient to have 50 variables in one class that have 5 different classes with shared responsibilities... One friend has even stated that adding functions to the program isn't really adding complexity to your system. So, what do you think, where does bloated complexity creep from? Is it variable count, function count, code line count, code line count per function, or something else?

• Can 3D OpenGL game written in Python look good and run fast?

  I am planning to write an simple 3d(isometric view) game in Java using jMonkeyEngine - nothing to fancy, I just want to learn something about OpenGL and writing efficient algorithms (random map generating ones). When I was planning what to do, I started wondering about switching to Python. I know that Python didn't come into existence to be a tool to write 3d games, but is it possible to write good looking games with this language? I have in mind 3d graphics, nice effects and free CPU time to power to rest of game engine? I had seen good looking java games - and too be honest, I was rather shocked when I saw level of detail achieved in Runescape HD. On the other hand, pygame.org has only 2d games, with some starting 3d projects. Are there any efficient 3d game engines for python? Is pyopengl the only alternative? Good looking games in python aren't popular or possible to achieve? I would be grateful for any information / feedback.
