• Ways to optimize Android App code based on function call stack?

  I've been told that Android OS stores all function calls in a stack. This can lead to many problems and cause the 'hiccups' during runtime, even if a program is functionalized properly, correct? So the question is, how can we prevent this from happening? The obvious solution is to functionalize less, along with other sensible acts such as refraining from excessively/needlessly creating objects, performing static calls to functions that don't access fields, etc... Is there another way though? Or can this only be done through careful code writing on the programmers' part? Does the JVM/JIT automatically optimize the bytecode during compile time to account for this?? Thanks a lot for your responses!!

  Many times I have member functions that copy parameters into object's fields. For Example: class NouveauRiches(object): def __init__(self, car, mansion, jet, bling): self.car = car self.mansion = mansion self.jet = jet self.bling = bling Is there a python language construct that would make the above code less tedious? One could use *args: def __init__(self, *args): self.car, self.mansion, self.jet, self.bling = args +: less tedious -: function signature not revealing enough. need to dive into function code to know how to use function -: does not raise a TypeError on call with wrong # of parameters (but does raise a ValueError) Any other ideas? (Whatever your suggestion, make sure the code calling the function does stays simple)

• undefined reference to static member variable

  Hi. I have this class that has a static member. it is also a base class for several other classes in my program. Here's its header file: #ifndef YARL_OBJECT_HPP #define YARL_OBJECT_HPP namespace yarlObject { class YarlObject { // Member Variables private: static int nextID; // keeps track of the next ID number to be used int ID; // the identifier for a specific object // Member Functions public: YarlObject(): ID(++nextID) {} virtual ~YarlObject() {} int getID() const {return ID;} }; } #endif and here's its implementation file. #include "YarlObject.hpp" namespace yarlObject { int YarlObject::nextID = 0; } I'm using g++, and it returns three undefined reference to 'yarlObject::YarlObject::nextID linker errors. If I change the ++nextID phrase in the constructor to just nextID, then I only get one error, and if I change it to 1, then it links correctly. I imagine it's something simple, but what's going on?

  I have a class UserControlBase that inherits System.Web.UI.UserControl and my user controls inherit UserControlBase class. UserControlBase has some common functions that are used in all user controls. I want to put error display funtion to UserControlBase as well so that I may not have to declare and manage it in all user controls. Error will be displayed in some label in usercontrol. Issue is how to access label which is in usercontrol in UserControlBase in function ? I dont want to pass label as argument. Please guide me on this issue. thanks

So, using the programming language that can implement the same functions with smaller SLOC is preferable in terms of stability." The author wanted to stress the advantages of using Functional Programming, as normally one can program with a smaller number of LOC. • Server-side access to Client Browser's Latitude/Longitude using Django.

  Hello, So i am writing a little app that compares a user's position against a database on web-based server written using Django and performs some functions with it. Accessing the browser's geolocation data (in supported browsers ) is fairly trivial using JavaScript. But what is the best way to allow the Django server to access the longitude and latitude variables? Is it best to wrap them up as a JSON object and send to the server via POST? Or is there some easier (Geo)Django-based way to access the Navigator.geolocation browser object. Please forgive a newbie a question like this, but my Google-Fuing only seems to find ways to insert variables into JavaScript via template tag, whereas I need it to work the other way! Any advice or code snippets greatly appreciated. Feel free to talk to me like I am an idiot.

  I'm trying to get an app on the WinMo App Store. As part of this, Microsoft App's Store has asked that I need to support landscape as well as portrait. What they've said is OK is: If dynamic switching is implicitly allowed, the app will be tested just as if it supports both portrait and landscape even if only a portrait or landscape resolution is checked. You may explicitly lock the app in one orientation (which means portrait mode if the app does not handle landscape mode functions), provided the default OS orientation is preserved once the app exits. I'd love to do answer 2 - but I can't find any way of doing it - and they won't provide me any other clues - they suggested I ask on the forums... so here I am on Stack Overflow - far better than on the forums :) Anyone got any suggestions?

  In the older version of the API, I'd have to insert the javascript into the page using something like this for just basic functionality to work: http://maps.google.com/maps?file=api&v=2&key=GoogleMapsAPIKey Where I had to configure the API key for each individual site. Looking at the documentation, it says to get a basic map working I just need this: http://maps.google.com/maps/api/js?sensor=true/false Where does the API key fit in? Do I need to worry about it if I just plan on using a basic map and marker and none of the more advanced functions?

• How can I (from a script) add something to the zsh command history?

  I'd like to be able to look through my command history and know the context from which I issued various commands--in other words, "what directory was I in?" There are various ways I could achieve this, but all of them (that I can think of) would require manipulating the zsh history to add (for instance) a commented line with the result of $(pwd). (I could create functions named cd & pushd & popd etc, or I could use zsh's preexec() function and maybe its periodic() function to add the comment line at most every X seconds, just before I issue a command, or perhaps there's some other way.) The problem is, I don't want to directly manipulate the history file and bypass the shell's history mechanism, but I can't figure out a way (with the fc command, for instance) to add something to the history without actually typing it on the command line. How could I do this?

• [PHP] Processing custom XML namespace within XSL

  I'm using the php class XSLTProcessor to generate HTML from a xsl. Within the xsl, I'd like all my custom namespace elements to be processed by my own processor class. So for example: <xsl:for-each select="doc/elements/*"> <doc:renderElement element="." /> </xsl:for-each> This should call the method renderElement of an instance of my custom processor class. I know I can enable calling php functions by using the registerPHPFunctions function. However, this only seems to support calling static methods.

  Edit: Added the fact, that the list is sorted, and realizing 'duplicate' is misleading, replaced that with 'redundant' in the title. I have a sorted list of entries stating a production value in a given interval.   Hi, I have a number of C functions, and I would like to call them from python. cython seems to be the way to go, but I can't really find an example of how exactly this is done. My C function looks like this: void calculate_daily ( char *db_name, int grid_id, int year, double *dtmp, double *dtmn, double *dtmx, double *dprec, double *ddtr, double *dayl, double *dpet, double *dpar ) ; All I want to do is to specify the first three parameters (a string and two integers), and recover 8 numpy arrays (or python lists. All the double arrays have N elements). My code assumes that the pointers are pointing to an already allocated chunk of memory. Also, the produced C code ought to link to some external libraries.

• IPhone: different system timers??

  I have been using mach_absolute_time() for all my timing functions so far. calculating how long between frames ect. I now want to get the exact time touch input events happen using event.timestamp in the touch callbacks. the problem is these two seem to use completely different timers. sure, you can get them both in seconds, but their origins are different and seemingly random... is there any way to sync the two different timers? or is there anyway to get access to the same timer that the touch input uses to generate that timestamp property? otherwise its next to useless.

  I've designed some educational programming languages and interpreters for them, but my problem always was that they ended up "normal" and "boring", mostly similar to some kind of existing language (ASM and BASIC). I find it really hard to come up with new ideas for syntax features, "neat things" and new or very modified programming paradigms for it. I always thought that it was hard to come up with good new things not fun/useless new things for this case. I wondered if you could help me out with your creativity: What features in terms of language syntax and built-in functions as well as maybe even new paradigms can I work into my language to keep it useless but more fun, enjoyable, interesting and/or different to program in?

• Java escape HTML - string replace slow?

  Hi StackOverflow, I have a Java application that makes heavy use of a large file, to read, process and give through to SolrEmbeddedServer (http://lucene.apache.org/solr/). One of the functions does basic HTML escaping: private String htmlEscape(String input) { return input.replace("&", "&amp;").replace(">", "&gt;").replace("<", "&lt;") .replace("'", "&apos;").replaceAll("\"", "&quot;"); } While profiling the application, the program spends roughly 58% of the time in this function, a total of 47% in replace, and 11% in replaceAll. Now, is the Java replace that slow, or am I on the right path and should I consider the program efficient enough to have its bottleneck in Java and not in my code? (Or am I replacing wrong?)   Hi all I'm trying to write an XML file with UTF-8 encode, and the original string can have invalid characters like 'á', so, i need to change these invalid characters to a valid ones. I know that there is an encoding method that take, for example, character 'á' and transform it to group of characters 'á'. I am trying to achive this with C#but i have no succes on it. I am using Encoding.UTF8 functions but i only end with the sema character (i.e: á) or a '?' character. So, do you know with is the correct way to achive this character change with C# ?? • Do bit operations cause programs to run slower?

  I'm dealing with a problem which needs to work with a lot of data. Currently its values are represented as an unsigned int. I know that real values do not exceed a limit of 1000. Questions I can use unsigned short to store it. An upside to this is that it'll use less storage space to store the value. Will performance suffer? If I decided to store data as short but all the calling functions use int, it's recognized that I need to convert between these datatypes when storing or extracting values. Will performance suffer? Will the loss in performance be dramatic? If I decided to not use short but just 10 bits packed into an array of unsigned int. What will happen in this case comparing with previous ones?

  What is the "proper" way to get the value stored in a particular field within a custom Drupal node? I've created a custom module, with a custom node, with a custom URL field.   Hello, I would ideally like to be able to add (very repetitive) C/C++ code to my actual code, but at compile time, code which would come from say, the stdout of a python script, the same way one does with macros. For example, let's say I want to have functions that depend on the public attributes of a given class, being able to just write the following in my C++ code would be a blessing: generate_boring_functions(FooBarClass,"FooBarClass.cpp") Is that feasible using conventional means? Or must I hack with Makefiles and temporary source files? Thanks.

  What are the consequences of implementing the same interface through two different routes in PHP, are there any? What I mean, is something like this: interface baseInterface {} abstract class baseClass implements baseInterface { } interface myInterface extends baseInterface {} class myClass extends baseClass implements myInterface {} In this case myClass implements baseInterface from two different parents - myInterface and baseClass. Are there any consequences to this? My instinct is that PHP should handle this fine, but I just want to make sure. What exactly does PHP do in this case? Does it just check to see that the necessary functions are implemented for the interface each time it discovers it and call it a day or does it do something more?

• Should I use DATE and TIME as fields rather than DATETIME

  I have a project on going for a TV guide, called mytvguide in the database - I use PHPMyAdmin. This is the structure for one table, which is called tvshow1: Field Type channel varchar(255) date date No airdate time No expiration time No episode varchar(255) setreminder varchar(255) but am not sure how to get DATE, TIME to work with the pagination script (below is the script, which works for the version with DATETIME): http://pastebin.com/6S1ejAFJ However, although the DATETIME one works - it shows programmes that air on the day itself like this: Programme 1 showing on Channel 1 2:35pm "Episode 2" Set Reminder Programme 1 showing on Channel 1 May 26th - 12:50pm "Episode 3" Set Reminder Programme 1 showing on Channel 1 May 26th - 5:55pm "Episode 3" Set Reminder but I'm not quite sure how to replicate that for the fields that use DATE, TIME functions as seen above. Any advice on this is appreciated, thanks!
