• Ideas on frameworks in .NET that can be used for job processing and notifications

  Scenario: We have one instance of WCF windows service which exposes contracts like: AddNewJob(Job job), GetJobs(JobQuery query) etc. This service is consumed by 70-100 instances of client which is Windows Form based .NET app. Typically the service has 50-100 inward calls/minute to add or query jobs that are stored in a table on Sql Server. The same service is also responsible for processing these jobs in real time. It queries database every 5 seconds picks up the queued jobs and starts processing them. A job has 6 states. Queued, Pre-processing, Processing, Post-processing, Completed, Failed, Locked. Another responsibility on this service is to update all clients on every state change of every job. This means almost 200+ callbacks to clients per second. Question: This whole implementation is done using WCF Duplex bindings and works perfectly fine on small number of parallel jobs. Problem arises when we scale it up to 1000 jobs at a time. The notifications don't work as expected, it leads to memory overflow etc. Is there any standard framework that can provide a clean infrastructure for handling this scenario??   I understand the host of issues in comparing floats, and lament their use in this case - but I'm not the table author and have only a small hurdle to climb... Someone has decided to use floats as you'd expect GUIDs to be used. I need to retrieve all the records with a specific float value. sp_help MyTable -- Column_name Type Computed Length Prec -- RandomGrouping float no 8 53 Here's my naive attempt: --yields no results SELECT RandomGrouping FROM MyTable WHERE RandomGrouping = 0.867153569942739 And here's an approximately working attempt: --yields 2 records SELECT RandomGrouping FROM MyTable WHERE RandomGrouping BETWEEN 0.867153569942739 - 0.00000001 AND 0.867153569942739 + 0.00000001 -- 0.867153569942739 -- 0.867153569942739 In my naive attempt, is that literal a floating point literal? Or is it really a decimal literal that gets converted later? If my literal is not a floating point literal, what is the syntax for making a floating point literal? EDIT: Another possibility has occurred to me... it may be that a more precise number than is displayed is stored in this column. It may be impossible to create a literal that represents this number. I will accept answers that demonstrate that this is the case. EDIT: response to DVK. TSQL is MSSQLServer's dialect of SQL. The linked article doesn't apply because I'm not (intentionally) trying to straddle the world boundaries between decimal and float. I'm trying to work with only floats. This isn't about the non-convertibility of decimals to floats.

• Auto-implemented getters and setters vs. public fields

  I see a lot of example code for C# classes that does this: public class Point { public int x { get; set; } public int y { get; set; } } Or, in older code, the same with an explicit private backing value and without the new auto-implemented properties: public class Point { private int _x; private int _y; public int x { get { return _x; } set { _x = value; } } public int y { get { return _y; } set { _y = value; } } } My question is why. Is there any functional difference between doing the above and just making these members public fields, like below? public class Point { public int x; public int y; } To be clear, I understand the value of getters and setters when you need to do some translation of the underlying data. But in cases where you're just passing the values through, it seems needlessly verbose.

• How to position a div at the bottom of the viewport in standard and in quirks mode ??

  Hi, I need to position a div to the bottom of my viewport. I start using position:fixed; bottom:0px; and that work just fine. But the thing that I'm working on gets injected via javascript in different pages. And some of the pages doesn't have a doctype defined, so in IE gets rendered like quircks mode, so the div doesn't get positioned correctly.. I've tried to position the div using javascript (document.documentElement.clientHeight) and that works fine. But when no doctype is defined, the "document.documentElement.clientHeight" is 0, so again the div doesn't get positioned correctly. Any idea on how to fix this problem? I'm only interested in IE 7 and 8. Thanks in advance Gonzalo

• Subversion pre-commit hook to clean XML from WebDAV autocommit client

  I know that it isn't normally safe to modify a commit from a pre-commit hook in Subversion because SVN clients will not see the version that has been committed, and will cache the wrong thing, but I'd like to clean the code from a versioning-naïve WebDAV client that won't keep a local cached copy. The idea is that when I look at the repository with an SVN client, the diffs are clean. The client, by the way is MS Word, using 2003 XML format files. We're already using this format in a WebDAV system, but we'd like to add a versioning capability for expert users. Everywhere I look for documentation on how to modify the code in a pre-commit hook, I get the answer "Don't do this", not the answer "Here's how to do this, but it's reccomeded you don't", so I can't even easily try it to see if it's going to cause me problems.

Like in this example: http://www.xylax.net/hibernate/manytomany.html But i have in the table foo-bar 2 attributes which are not part of the primary or foreign keys.: one boolean(A) & one string(B). I know how to map it without attributes but not in this case. I have not found an answer in the documentation. • A weird crash...

  Hi, I have a piece of code that runs in debug mode in VS2008, C++. The problem is that when I am debugging the code line by line, at a very weird point of the code, it crashes and says: debug assertion faild. Expression: _BLOCK_TYPE_IS_VALID(pHead-nBlockUse) The crash point is on the first closed curly bracket (after mesh-edges[e].needsUpdate=false;) I don't understand why on a curly bracket? does that make sense to you guys? • NSFormatter problem: not getting called for the empty string

  I have created a custom formatter for my (read-only) table column. It looks like this: - (NSString *)stringForObjectValue:(id)anObject { NSAssert([anObject isKindOfClass:[NSString class]] && anObject != nil, @"invalid object"); if ([anObject isEqualToString:@""]) return @"EMPTY"; else return [anObject stringByAppendingString:@"++"]; } Very simple. The corresponding objects are just strings, so it's an string-to-string formatter. All non-empty string objects are returned with @"++" appended to them. Empty string objects should be turned into the @"EMPTY" string. The @"++" gets appended to non-empty strings just fine. The problem is, @"EMPTY" never gets shown! My formatter is never called by Cocoa when the underlying object is the empty string. The corresponding row just keeps being empty, instead of showing my requested @"EMPTY". Any ideas?

For Example : Player Click to create a resource And resource creation will be take a moment like 20 Minutes.(Every resource creation time will be different). This message will send to web server application but this message will not processed at same time for example must be processed after 20 Minutes. The web server application after getting the message must be put the order in the Queue. We have Some big problems : 1- The Jobs must be complete by the web server application Even the player Exit the Game. I think that we must create something like Windows service on Web Server. Can we do it? or Is there a better way? 2- The Second problem depended on problem 1 .Because we will have many Jobs (every player can create 20,30 Jobs in every Loggin and we will have thousands of users) , So Our Scheduling System Must be Work On time . it's possible that , there is 100 , 1000 jobs in a same second , if application Can't Done Jobs in him Second will be use the next second Time and the next second jobs will shift to next second and etc. How We can do for this problem ? • Iterating Over <select> Using jQuery + Multi Select

  This isn't quite as straight forward as one may think. I'm using a plugin called jQuery MultiSelect and multiple <select options using XSLT as follows: <xsl:for-each select="RootField"> <select id="{RootField}" multiple="multiple" size="3"> <option value=""></option> <xsl:for-each select="ChildField"> <option value="{ChildField}"><xsl:value-of select="ChildField"/></option> </xsl:for-each> </select> </xsl:for-each> The accompanying JavaScript is as follows: var selects = document.getElementsByTagName("select"); $.each(selects, function() { $(this).multiSelect(); }); This allows me to apply the multiSelect(); function to every single <select on the page. The behaviour is quite strange, every other <select is being changed into the dropdown list (all the even ones anyway). I can't see anything wrong in my JavaScript to cause this issue as it would iterate over every single one. To make it more clear, the only lists that have that JavaScript applied to it are ones in position 2, 4, 6 and 8 (out of the 9 which are on the page). Any ideas?

(a) CourseList (b) CourseRec (c) string (d) char (e) none; the expression is syntactically invalid I thought that the answer would be string, since courseName is a string, or maybe even CourseRec, since it is in the struct, but the answer is (d)char. Why is this a char data type? Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Does QThread::sleep() require the event loop to be running?

  I have a simple client-server program written in Qt, where processes communicate using MPI. The basic design I'm trying to implement is the following: The first process (the "server") launches a GUI (derived from QMainWindow), which listens for messages from the clients (using repeat fire QTimers and asynchronous MPI receive calls), updates the GUI depending on what messages it receives, and sends a reply to every message. Every other process (the "clients") runs in an infinite loop, and all they are intended to do is send a message to the server process, receive the reply, go to sleep for a while, then wake up and repeat. Every process instantiates a single object derived from QThread, and calls its start() method. The run() method of these classes all look like this: from foo.cpp: void Foo::run() { while (true) { // Send message to the first process // Wait for a reply // Do uninteresting stuff with the reply sleep(3); // also tried QThread::sleep(3) } } In the client's code, there is no call to exec() anywhere, so no event loop should start. The problem is that the clients never wake up from sleeping (if I surround the sleep() call with two writes to a log file, only the first one is executed, control never reaches the second). Is this because I didn't start the event loop? And if so, what is the simplest way to achieve the desired functionality?

• What is the base open source java package to filter/match URLs?

  Hi, I have an high performance application which deals with URLs. For every URL it needs to retrieve the appropriate settings from a predefined pool. Every settings object is associated with a URL pattern which indicates which URLs should use these settings. The matching rules are as follows: "google.com" match pattern should match all URLs pointing to the google domain (thus, maps.google.com and www.google.com/match are matched). "*.google.com" should match all URLs pointing to a subdomain of google.com (thus, maps.google.com matches, but google.com and www.google.com don't). "maps.google.com" should match all URLs pointing to this specific subdomain. Apart from the above rules, every match rule can contain a path, which means that the path part of the URL should start with the match rule path. So: "*.google.com/maps" matches "maps.google.com/maps" but not "maps.google.com/advanced". As you can see the rules above are overlapping. In the case two rules exist which match the same URL the most specific should apply. The list above is ranked from least specific to most specific. This seems to be such a standard problem that I was hoping to use a ready made library rather than program my self. Google reveals a couple of options but without a clear way to choose between them. I actually realised that I could answer my question easily by compiling the code, but it's an interesting question nonetheless, so I'll ask the question anyway and answer it myself shortly. Take a look at this snippet: The question considers what happens when we throw from a destructor (which causes terminate() to be called). It's become clear to me by asking the question that the memory is indeed freed and the destructor is called, but, is this before or after throw is called from foo? Perhaps the issue here is that throw is used while the stack is unwinding that is the problem... Actually this is slightly confusing.

• How to upload binary (audio) data from a Flash AS3 client to .NET server (WCF/REST/HTTP/?)?

  Simply stated: I'm trying to record audio in a browser, and get that data back up to the server. I originally tried to capture, encode and upload the audio using Silverlight, but because of the lack of suitable client-side encoding options, I'm now giving Flash a shot (Flash has baked-in support for encoding to Speex). I think I've figured out how to capture and encode the audio... But now what was easy in Silverlight, is the challenge in Flash. My server-side is .NET: MVC2- I'm open to receiving the audio in whatever manner is best- REST, WCF.. So that's my question: How could one upload binary data from Flash, to a .NET server-side endpoint. If the answer is WCF: then how would one setup the client-side proxies to communicate with the service? If the answer is REST or HTTP Post, then how would one construct this HTTP request and pass along the data? I've been reading up on AS3, but am new to Flash dev... Thanks for any help!

  I have a class that implements the INotifyPropertyChanged interface. Some of the properties of the class are of type List. For example: public List<string> Answers { get { return _answers; } set { _answers = value; onPropertyChanged("Answers") } } ... private void onPropertyChanged(string propertyName) { if(this.PropertyChanged != null) this.PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName)); } If I assign a new List<string> to Answer, then the PropertyChanged event fires as expected; but if I add a string string to the Answer list using the List Add method, then PropertyChanged event doesn't fire. I was considering adding an AddAnswer() method to my class, which would handle calling the lists's Add method and would call onPropertyChanged() from there, but is that the right way to do it? • maven-archetype-webapp eclipse problem

  Hi all, I'm trying to create a very simple webapp with maven and eclipse, but I'm having no joy at all, in fact the reverse of joy. I go to File - New Project, select Maven Project, and select the maven-archetype-webapp. When I finish the wizard, a webapp structure gets generated but with no 'java' directory under main, just resources and webapp. So I right click on main and select new Class. The class gets created under resources (?!), and furthermore, there seems to be no compilation of it by java. I can make stupid errors and no syntax highlighting comes up. It's like java isn't recognizing it. Alternatively I have tried creating a new 'java' directory under main where it should be, but still with the same non-existent java symptoms. What gives? This is driving me insane.. Thanks all!

  Is one correct in stating the following: If a Python object is created in a C function, but the function doesn't return it, no INCREF is needed, but a DECREF is. [false]If the function does return it, you do need to INCREF, in the function that receives the return value.[/false] When assigning C typed variables as attributes, like double, int etc., to the Python object, no INCREF or DECREF is needed. Assigning Python objects as attributes to your other Python objects goes like this: PyObject *foo; foo = bar // A Python object tmp = self->foo; Py_INCREF(foo); self->foo = foo; Py_XDECREF(tmp); //taken from the manual, but it is unclear if this works in every situation EDIT: -- can I safely use this in every situation? (haven't run into one where it caused me problems) dealloc of a Python object needs to DECREF for every other Python object that it has as an attribute, but not for attributes that are C types.   I am using a Repeater which contains a placeholder. The placeholder is bound to my database and each ItemTemplate contains 1-6 radiobuttons depending on what the database returns. • Developing "Command Line" in .NET?

  Imagine a "search box" on the right top side of the UI Windows Application. When user types a desired action, a matching functionality is executed. Screen gets opened, or action gets performed. For example: user types "create" and intellisence offered next word options "client"/"product", user picks "client", and "Create New Client" screen opens up. So what I am looking for if there is a framework support for this. I assume that framework shall bind together text commands names, commands and show in intellisense. Same framework possibly could have been used in alternative "Command Line interface". I recall Microsoft had some recent framework that helps to setup "command Line Interface" environmental. It is hard to search on web for this keywords, so relying on intelligent help from you guys. Thanks in advance.

Now the requirement is if any of the month is missing.how could i show it? for eg: the output of the above query is cycd cm 102 1 102 10 102 11 102 12 103 1 103 10 103 11 103 12 104 1 104 10 104 11 104 12 Now lets say the row with cycd=104 and cm=11 is not present in the table,then the above query will not get the row 104 11. I want to display only those rows. how could i do it?

The question: my confusion results from the fact that there is interprocess communication between the processes. does that change anything in terms of where to rollback? my answer would be R13, R23, R32 and R43. any help is greatly appreciated! thanks!
