• July, the 31 Days of SQL Server DMO’s – Day 27 (sys.dm_db_file_space_usage)

  The sys.dm_db_file_space usage DMV returns information about database file space usage.  This DMV was enhanced for the 2012 version to include 3 additional columns. Let’s query this DMV against our AdventureWorks2012 database and view the results. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_db_file_space_usage The column returned from this DMV are really self-explanatory, but I will give you a description, paraphrased from books online, below. The first three columns returned from this DMV represent the Database, File, and Filegroup for the current database context that executed the DMV query. The next column is the total_page_count which represents the total number of pages in the file. The allocated_extent_page_count represents the total number of pages in all extents that have been allocated. The unallocated_extent_page_count represents the number of pages in the unallocated extents within the file. The version_store_reserved_page_count column represents the number of pages that are allocated to the version store. The user_object_reserved_page_count represents the number of pages allocated for user objects. The internal_object_reserved_page_count represents the number of pages allocated for internal objects.  Lastly is the mixed_extent_page_count which represents the total number of pages that are part of mixed extents. • PowerConnect 2848 , vlan configuration with AP

  I need to configure two vlan on an AP connected with a Dell PowerConnect 2848. The first one is up and running (let's say vlan x) , the second one is a completely different network (vlan y) , provided by a Gateway-DHCP wich i have no access, directely Patched (via patch panel) at a secondo AP device. So i cannot just plug this Gateway device on my switch without tagging traffic before, for DHCP collion . I have to solve this problem. I was thinking about tagging the traffic at the port wich I will connect the gateway device with vlan y and then set as trunk (vlanx+y) the AP port. In this way I hope to limit the vlan y traffic ONLY for the ports I selected avoiding the spread of unwanted dhcp calls. But all other ports are Unassigned , so I am not sure they won't forward dhcp (vlan y) traffic. I cannot change the Unassigned state for the vlan x ports cause vlanx is native.

• Connecting together DIR-615 and DIR-655

  On my DIR-655 my internal network is: 192.168.0.x On my DIR-615 my internal network is: 192.168.1.x They are both connected to my firewall PIX 501 box The PIX itself is connected to the comcast modem. I briefly looked at the menu options on those router and they look similar, however I'm not sure what's the best way to connect those two together so that I can go between those networks. (printing, file browsing, etc.) I'm not sure if I have to do this somehow on those two router or on the PIX itself, or probably on all of them. If anyone has experience with something like that please let me know..

• Cannot read/access Apache2 access logs

  I have been asked to take a look at some access logs for an Apcahe2 web server running on Ubuntu. I have been told by the administrator of the machine that my login has "admin" access yet I cannot seem to copy the access logs from Apache2 to my local machine via FTP for analysis. I figure one of two things is happening ... I don't really have full admin access Some other process (perhaps Apache2) has control of the log files and won't let me copy them. How can I tell if I truly have admin access? What type of access do I need to request? Root access? Something else? Should I be able to copy these log files with admin access?

• Web browser being selective about the sites that it will visit.

  I've been trying to help my father-in-law with this problem but haven't been able to get anywhere. Since the weekend the web browsers on his computer (Chrome and Internet Explorer on Windows XP) will only let him get to certain sites - for example, he is able to conduct his online banking but he cannot visit www.bbc.co.uk, www.amazon.co.uk or www.ancestry.com. There is another computer in the house that goes via the same router and this can connect to both, which suggests it is his machine. I tried running a tracert to www.bbc.co.uk and managed to get through, but the web browser hangs with a message that it is waiting for a response. I tried using the WinSockFix tool in case it was anything to do with a recent registry change but that didn't work either. He can't think of anything that he recently did on his machine to cause the problem. Can anyone help?

• Due to the Classes

  Why does it seem that I am always saying sorry (or in Japanese Gomennasi)?  Well I am late again for blog as you can see. The CCNA class’s part 1 (also known as CCENT) was, well more intense than all of the certification classes before it.   The teacher was cramming as much as he could into us during the week and it was hard to come home and do much more than fall into bed (Well I was doing still doing my Job search and checking up on my web sites and groups).   But I didn’t have much left in the way of blogging (Which by the way is now in 3 different sites). Even though it was hard some times, I really liked the fact I was getting back to something like (and mean really like, in fact I like Cisco routers than some people I know). At the class, I got some software that allows me to simulate setting up and troubles shoot Lan’s or Wan’s.   When we weren’t getting facts for the test thrown at us, we were doing labs with this software. It was fun for me to be able to use the CISCO router commands and trouble shoot router issues. Even if it was just a sim. So now it is study, study, take practices tests and do the labs. I took the week end and more off after cram CCENT week but, now I am back at it.  Also I could not keep up with my Love Dare book during week of the class. No I did not stop or forget what I already learned. I just put the next dare on hold. Well the hold is off starting tomorrow and tonight I think I am going to write a new cover letter. Let’s see what else I can get done tonight. Hmm I think I will try to do a sim of my home wireless LAN and study for CCENT test in about 3 weeks.   So see you tomorrow (I hope).

• How to merge-copy multiple folders in Outlook?

  In MS Outlook, I need to be able to incrementally copy items in multiple folders in the Exchange account to a local PST file with a mirrored folder structure. I need the items in each folder to be combined into the destination. For example, let's say on the server account I have a folder tree like this: Inbox SortedEmails1 SortedEmails2 SortedEmails3 I also have these same four folders in the local PST file, which I want to keep growing as I incrementally pull more messages from the Exchange server. Messages from "Inbox" should go to the local "Inbox", messages from "SortedEmails1" should go into "SortedEmails1" in the local PST, etc. I'd like to avoid manually iterating into every single folder and copying items. How can I do this?

• Last Night's Phoenix Silverlight UserGroup Meeting -- thanks!

  14 of us gathered last night for a great presentation. As advertised, Les Brown of Sogeti came out to talk to us about the 4.0 enhancements, and brought along a new graduate and fellow-worker Chris Ross (Congratulations on your degree, again). Good discussion about MEF and Les' approach to using it, all of which is available on CodePlex along with other fun things Les has done, for example: FileUpload Control, FlipPanel, Animation Extensions, etc., and also his CodeCamp material. As it turned out I only had one give-away with me, but that was worth probably close to everything I've given away so far: a Telerik Ultimate License graciously provided by Telerik: I also have a Sitefinity license to use on our site from Telerik, but I've been jammed up and haven't had the time to devote to getting it cooking. I included Les and Chris in my spreadsheet for randomly selecting swag awardees, and Chris ended up the winner... Being a presenter, a new graduate, and new job, I thought it was appropriate. Let's not forget our host, Interface Technical Training for taking the burden of providing a facility for us off my agenda. I've been to User Group meetings in many places, but the ITT facilities are the best, so thanks! Also thanks to everyone that came out... we had some new people and some regulars. I have a speaker for August but not July, so if you have something to present, send me an email. Thanks!

• How to compile a gvim from source using the latest version

I performed the following commands in the vim source folder: sudo apt-get build-dep vim ./configure --with-features=huge --enable-gui=gtk2 --enable-rubyinterp=yes --enable-pythoninterp=yes make sudo make install I have found that related posts but fail in Ubuntu 13.04 Update: sorry for not providing enough error msg here is the error after do the .configure checking --enable-gui argument... no GUI support How can i let the system to find the GUI library? I have try to do apt-get build-dep vim the gui lib should be included, but no luck what else can i do? i have also tried --enable-gui=<auto, gtk, gtk2, gnome2> all of them show the same error no GUI support...

  I have ubuntu 12.04 64-bit system, when i run glxinfo i see some strange error about indirect rendering and failed to load some lib32/dri/swrast_dri libraries. • Is there any reason to subnet a home network?

  For networks I understand we set a netmask on each computer to let it know what IPs it can talk to without going through the router - IPs on the same subnet can talk directly to each other and do not have to go through a router/switch. However, in today's home networks (and I suspect corporate networks as well) every computer is connected to a router/switch (at the low cost of today's hardware I doubt there it much of a market for wired repeaters/hubs). This seems to obviate the need for a subnet mask and subnetting. Considering that in most modern home architectures every computer goes through the router, even to talk to computers on the same network, is there any reason for me to subnet a home network?

Every single time when someone has followed my answer – they have found accurate answer in first few clicks. However increasingly this question getting very popular so I have decided to answer this question here. I usually prefer to create my own T-SQL script but in today’s case, I have taken the script from web. I have seen this script at so many places I do not know who is original creator so not sure who should get credit for the same. Question: How to retrieve SQL Server Installation date? Answer: Run following query and it will give you date of SQL Server Installation. SELECT create_date FROM sys.server_principals WHERE sid = 0x010100000000000512000000 Question: I have installed SQL Server Evaluation version how do I know what is the expiry date for it? Answer: SQL Server evaluation period is for 180 days. The expiration date is always 180 days from the initial installation. Following query will give an expiration date of evaluation version. -- Evaluation Version Expire Date SELECT create_date AS InstallationDate, DATEADD(DD, 180, create_date) AS 'Expiry Date' FROM sys.server_principals WHERE sid = 0x010100000000000512000000 GO I believe there is a way to do the same using registry but I have not explored it personally. • Avast Antivirus downloading data from net even when told not to update.

  Hi all, This is a strange problem that I have never seen before. I have two machines, both running Win 7 and running the latest version of Avast, both seem to be downloading large amounts of data. I noticed it when we were using more data for our monthly limit then normal, 2gb+ in a couple of days when really only browsing. I installed NetLimiter and let it run for couple of hours and this is the result for the avast! Service (c:\program files\alwil software\avast5\avastsvc.exe ). The other computer downloaded twice as much data in the same amount of time. Both installs of avast have their automatic updates (turned off at 4:00pm), for both program and definitions. Does anyone know what might be going on here.

• How to convert html textfield/area data to server-side txt file? [closed]

  How can I make a script that will convert the text/data in a html textfield/textarea and send it to the server, which then saves it as a .txt file for storage? NOTE: I am hosting a website(for testing purposes) using Apache 2.2 on a Windows 7 machine. I downloaded PHP version 5.4.7, but have not yet installed on my server yet (not sure if I will need it, but also not sure how to install it). 1st problem: Saving text to server Html page/section with title textfield, text textarea, and submit button. You would enter a title, the text/notes you need in the textfield, then press the submit button to have it store the text in the textarea, as a .txt file on the server called .txt. 2nd problem: Opening text from server Html with list of all txt files OR textfield for entering in title, then submit button to send the title of the requested .txt file to the server, which would then load it up on the page. • What can I do to prevent my user folder from being tampered with by malicious software?

  Let's assume some things: Back-ups do run every X minutes, yet the things I save should be permanent. There's a firewall and virus scanner in place, yet there happens to be a zero day attack on me. I am using Windows. (Although feel free to append Linux / OS X parts to your answer) Here is the problem Any software can change anything inside my user folder. Tampering with the files could cost me my life, whether it's accessing / modifying or wiping them. So, what I want to ask is: Is there a permission-based way to disallow programs from accessing my files in any way by default? Extending on the previous question, can I ensure certain programs can only access certain folders? Are there other less obtrusive ways than using Comodo? Or can I make Comodo less obtrusive? For example, the solution should be proof against (DO NOT RUN): del /F /S /Q %USERPROFILE%

  We have struggled in the past with different approaches of getting feedback from you as bloggers.  We really want to know what you would like to see, what other systems have that is helpful, and where we need to grow.  This community is made up of many different individuals so the system for feedback needed a voting or liking tool for us to gage what was a popular thought or just one guys request.  We would love to put every request in, but that would make the system function for some and unusable for others. • Receiving an MVP Award and Credibility

  The post titled, The Problem with MVPs, by Steve Barbour was interesting because it makes you think about the thousands of MVPs around the world and what their value really is. Having been the recipient of multiple MVP awards, it’s an opportunity to reflect and judge my own performance. This is not a dangerous thing to do, but quite the opposite. If a person believes in self improvement, then critical analysis is an important part of that process. A lot of MVPs will tell you that they would be doing the same thing, regardless of whether they were an MVP or not; helping others in the community, which is also where I prefer to hang my hat. I’ve never defined myself as an expert and never will; this determination is left to others. In fact, let me just come out and say it, “I don’t know everything”. Shocked? Sometimes the gap between expectations and reality extends beyond a reasonable measure. Being labeled as a technical expert feels good for one's self esteem and is certainly a useful motivational technique. A problem can emerge though when an individual believes, too much, in what they are told. The problem is not with a pat on the back, but with a person does with the positive reinforcement. Is narcissism too strong a word? How often have you been in a public forum reading a demeaning response to a question that only serves in attempt to raise the stature of the person providing the response? Such behavior compromises one’s credibility, raises questions about validity of the MVP award, and is limited in community value. I’m currently under consideration for another MVP award on April 1st. If it happens, it will be good. Otherwise, I’ll keep writing articles, coding open source software, and whatever else I enjoy doing; with the best reward being that people find value in what I do. • Third-party open-source projects in .NET and Ruby and NIH syndrome

  The title might seem to be inflammatory, but it's here to catch your eye after all. I'm a professional .NET developer, but I try to follow other platforms as well. With Ruby being all hyped up (mostly due to Rails, I guess) I cannot help but compare the situation in open-source projects in Ruby and .NET. What I personally find interesting is that .NET developers are for the most part severely suffering from the NIH syndrome and are very hesitant to use someone else's code in pretty much any shape or form. Comparing it with Ruby, I see a striking difference. Folks out there have gems literally for every little piece of functionality imaginable. New projects are popping out left and right and generally are heartily welcomed. On the .NET side we have CodePlex which I personally find to be a place where abandoned projects grow old and eventually get abandoned. Now, there certainly are several well-known and maintained projects, but the number of those pales in comparison with that of Ruby. Granted, NIH on the .NET devs part comes mostly from the fact that there are very few quality .NET projects out there, let alone projects that solve their specific needs, but even if there is such a project, it's often frowned upon and is reinvented in-house. So my question is multi-fold: Do you find my observations anywhere near being correct? If so, what are your thoughts on quality and quantitiy of OSS projects in .NET? Again, if you do agree with my thoughts on "NIH in .NET", what do you think is causing it? And finally, is it Ruby's feature set & community standpoint (dynamic language, strong focus on testing) that allows for such easy integration of third-party code?

• Logout user script

  I am trying to create a script in ARD that will let me logout a user. Now I have a script which does start the logout, but I want it to execute instead of waiting 60 seconds. The script currently is: osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to log out' As I said, this works but then I want it to press return on the logout dialog. The script I tried to make it do that is: osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to log out' -e 'keystroke return' which doesn't work. Is there a way, possibly by telling the system to press Cmd+Opt+q, then Enter, to log out without waiting for the timeout to expire?

• sendmail on Ubuntu won't send from www-data user

  I if call mail() function in PHP from webserver (running as www-data) i get an error sending email. If i call the same script from the cmdline logged in as root, then it works If i switch user to www-data and run from the cmdline i get this error message WARNING: RunAsUser for MSP ignored, check group ids (egid=33, want=107) can not chdir(/var/spool/mqueue-client/): Permission denied Program mode requires special privileges, e.g., root or TrustedUser. • Problems locating Redmine database

  I have an active redmine but I can not find the database where it is running right now. It should be on PostgreSQL but the database where it should be running is empty. Does anybody have any idea how to check current database used by redmine? Please let me know if you need any extra information. Thank you EDIT: Ok I know the database it is using. On the database.yml I have project_redmine but it is using the database project I dont know why. That database it is used by developers for the actual project. So that is getting me problems of course. I am unable to run it on the right DB (project_redmine) any ideas? :S
