• OpenVPN with MacOS X Client and same subnets in local and remote net.

  I have a homenetwork 192.168.1.0/24 with gteway 192.168.1.1 and a remote network with the same parameters. Now I want to create a OpenVPN tunnel between those networks. I have no problems with Windows, because Windows routes everything to 192.168.1.0/24 except 192.168.1.1 throught the tunnel. When I manually route a single IP like 192.168.1.16 over the tunnel gateway 192.168.6.6, this works. Q: How do I set up my routes in MacOS X for the same behaviour as on windows, to route everything except 192.168.1.1 through the tunnel, but leave the default gateway to be my local 192.168.1.1 ?

• Print over remote CUPS server, but just show a subset of the printers.

  I'd like to print from my Ubuntu laptop (karmic) to some networked printers. Our organisation uses a CUPS server with several hundred printers. What I know I can do is: CUPS_SERVER=printers.company.com acroread document.pdf and then Adobe Reader shows me all available printers to select from. However, it takes a couple of minutes to display the large list, which is really annoying. (The desktop PCs here suffer from this, too.) The other option is to add a new printer with an address like ipp://printers.company.com/printer/bldg1_hp8150 (to the Ubuntu printer configuration = local CUPS server). However, it asks me for a driver. I don't want to / can't always specify a driver, since some printers don't appear in the list. I'd like to let the remote CUPS server handle the driver part (like it does when i set CUPS_SERVER), and do no more preprocessing/"driver stuff" on my side. The ideal thing would be if I could somehow add the remote printer list to my local cups server, and apply a filter, so that it would just display printers a la bldg1_*. This feature was available in KDE3.?, but I can't find something similar in Ubuntu/Gnome. Any suggestions?

• Are 'edited by' inline comments the norm in shops which use revision control?

  The senior dev in our shop insists that whenever code is modified, the programmer responsible should add an inline comment stating what he did. These comments usually look like // YYYY-MM-DD <User ID> Added this IF block per bug 1234. We use TFS for revision control, and it seems to me that comments of this sort are much more appropriate as check-in notes rather than inline noise. TFS even allows you to associate a check-in with one or more bugs. Some of our older, often-modified class files look like they have a comment-to-LOC ratio approaching 1:1. To my eyes, these comments make the code harder to read and add zero value. Is this a standard (or at least common) practice in other shops?

• Do all web caches understand the "Cache-Control" HTTP header?

  I'd like to avoid the "Expires" header, and use "Cache-Control" only - or maybe the other way around. The headers will account for a significant percentage of my traffic, so I'd prefer not to "use both". AFAIK, the "Cache-Control" header was standardized in HTTP 1.1, but are there still web caches/proxies in use, which don't understand it? Note: This could help answering a part of my stackoverflow (bounty) question

• Black bars around screen? Catalyst Control Center problem?

  I just newly install Ubuntu 12.04, and im running an HDMI cable from my computer to my ASUS monitor. Now in Windows 7, i did not have these black bar issues running at 1080p. But now in Ubuntu, i have these black bars. I installed the ATI Catalyst Control Center, and I went to go in to fix the scaling but it is grayed out. As you can see, even with the override box checked i still can not set the scaling. The monitor was set to a lower resolution to hopefully fix it but that did not work either. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

  Given the following: The website does not call any external images or scripts, all the content is hosted on a server that is in our control. The website does not contain the meta tag, nor does it contain the html file that would authorize a Google Account access to Webmaster Tools. The access logs have not been provided to any 2nd or 3rd party. Is it possible for a 3rd party to get an idea of how many hits the site is getting, or are they limited to just seeing how high the site ranks? How could the 3rd party determine how well the site is doing under these restrictions? Is there a website for that that you know of?

• How do I allow full brightness control on Unity?

  When I use the brightness changing buttons Unity changes the brightness by two levels each time to create a nice effect. However, I only have about 10 different brightness settings and so this effect has caused a reduction in brightness settings to 5. I change my brightness regularly to suit the lighting in the room I'm in, but am unable to do this so effectively now that the number of levels has been reduced. Is there any way of turning off this brightness effect and controlling my brightness setting more sensitively? Thank you for your time. EDIT: It may not be 2 levels it changes at a time but 3, I've worked this out as the brightness control panel allows you to set the brightness accurately and there seem to be a couple of settings that the button misses completely when I change the brightness with the buttons.

  I have used http://www.longtailvideo.com/bits-on-the-run,http://www.influxis.com/, wistia for video hosting. Wistia didn't allow the finer control that we wanted to have. Influxis doesn't have the features that Bits on the Run has but platform usage for BOTR gets expensive. I was thinking of moving the videos to Amazon CDN. What are your thoughts and experiences with video hosting and are there any recommendations? Videos will be privately streamed to 100's of doctors offices.

• Why do control keys (ctrl, shift, alt) not work sometimes?

  Sometimes (about once a week) the control keys (ctrl, shift, alt) so not work anymore. They do work when I boot up, but after a while they stop working. Logging out and in again repairs it. What can cause something like that? Edit: It just happened again. Incidentally it happened right after vmware-player crashed just as the last time. Coincidence? Edit: It is a laptop keyboard (HP EliteBook 8730w) with german layout.

• Is asking for control totals on a file an outdated means of verifying a file?

  I'm in a new position where I need to process a flat files on a regular basis. The last time I did this was 5 or 6 years ago but as part of the file layout I received control totals. It gave me simplistic information on the file like the total number of records as well as sums of the important fields. This helped me during testing then also during production to verify the file arrived and has correct information. I have asked for similar data for this new project and have hit a wall of no. Is this no longer a standard practice? Is there a better way?

• Visual Tree Enumeration

  I feel compelled to post this blog because I find I’m repeatedly posting this same code in silverlight and windows-phone-7 answers in Stackoverflow. One common task that we feel we need to do is burrow into the visual tree in a Silverlight or Windows Phone 7 application (actually more recently I found myself doing this in WPF as well).  This allows access to details that aren’t exposed directly by some controls.  A good example of this sort of requirement is found in the “Restoring exact scroll position of a listbox in Windows Phone 7”  question on stackoverflow.  This required that the scroll position of the scroll viewer internal to a listbox be accessed. A caveat One caveat here is that we should seriously challenge the need for this burrowing since it may indicate that there is a design problem.  Burrowing into the visual tree or indeed burrowing out to containing ancestors could represent significant coupling between module boundaries and that generally isn’t a good idea. Why isn’t this idea just not cast aside as a no-no?  Well the whole concept of a “Templated Control”, which are in extensive use in these applications, opens the coupling between the content of the visual tree and the internal code of a control.   For example, I can completely change the appearance and positioning of elements that make up a ComboBox.  The ComboBox control relies on specific template parts having set names of a specified type being present in my template.  Rightly or wrongly this does kind of give license to writing code that has similar coupling. Hasn’t this been done already? Yes it has.  There are number of blogs already out there with similar solutions.  In fact if you are using Silverlight toolkit the VisualTreeExtensions class already provides this feature.  However I prefer my specific code because of the simplicity principle I hold to.  Only write the minimum code necessary to give all the features needed.  In this case I add just two extension methods Ancestors and Descendents, note I don’t bother with “Get” or “Visual” prefixes.  Also I haven’t added Parent or Children methods nor additional “AndSelf” methods because all but Children is achievable with the addition of some other Linq methods.  I decided to give Descendents an additional overload for depth hence a depth of 1 is equivalent to Children but this overload is a little more flexible than simply Children. • Cisco Unified Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

  Hi everybody i have deployed office communication server 2007 R2 and communicator 2007 R2 and i made integration with Cisco Unified Communication Manager 7.1 in my network, i also use Remote Desktop Servers 2008 R2 for Thin Client Computers, now that i installed Cisco UC integration client for communicator 2007 R2 (Ver. 8.0.3) or Cisco UC integration client for Microsoft Lync that works fine on PCs but Not on Remote Desktop Servers. i have Three Remote Desktop Servers in a Farm with loadbalancing enabled. all other applications on these RDP servers works fine for 120 active users. some times when i start Cisco UC client on Remote Desktop servers i get the following error: "The Port Reguired for callbacks from Cisco unified client framework could not be read, please retry" i also found the folowing log so i think that may be the cause: 2011-01-05 08:24:21,489 [INFO ] [com.cisco.uc.ucsf.ProblemReportingTool.controller.SingleInstanceManager] [SingleInstanceManager.acquireMutex(0)] - • SimpleDOM sortedXPath date sorting works on localhost but not on remote server.

  Here's what i'm trying to do: 1) Take a basic XML page (data.xml) 2) Load it with simpleDOM 3) Use simpleDOM sortedXPath to sort all XML items by their pubDate 4) Display sorted output Here is the code I currently have. My code below outputs exactly what I need when run it on my localhost (XAMPP w/PHP 5.3) but on my remote server (which has at least PHP 5.0+) all is lost and a completely blank page is output. It will output the $xml array with print_r though. • How to pull one commit at a time from a remote git repository?

  I'm trying to set up a darcs mirror of a git repository. I have something that works OK, but there's a significant problem: if I push a whole bunch of commits to the git repo, those commits get merged into a single darcs patchset. I really want to make sure each git commit gets set up as a single darcs patchset. I bet this is possible by doing some kind of git fetch followed by interrogation of the local copy of the remote branch, but my git fu is not up to the job. Here's the (ksh) code I'm using now, more or less: git pull -v # pulls all the commits from remote --- bad! # gets information about only the last commit pulled -- bad! author="$(git log HEAD^..HEAD --pretty=format:"%an <%ae>")" logfile=$(mktemp) git log HEAD^..HEAD --pretty=format:"%s%n%b%n" > $logfile # add all new files to darcs and record a patchset. this part is OK darcs add -q --umask=0002 -r . darcs record -a -A "$author" --logfile="$logfile" darcs push -a rm -f $logfile My idea is Try git fetch to get local copy of the remote branch (not sure exactly what arguments are needed) Somehow interrogate the local copy to get a hash for every commit since the last mirroring operation (I have no idea how to do this) Loop through all the hashes, pulling just that commit and recording the associated patchset (I'm pretty sure I know how to do this if I get my hands on the hash) I'd welcome either help fleshing out the scenario above or suggestions about something else I should try. • Log off from Remote Desktop Session does not closing Session, showing the login screen again on Wind

  Hi As per requirement we have written one custom GINA. I have observed one interesting behavior in Windows XP 32 Bit(SP2). Customized GINA internally calls windows default Windows GINA(msgina.dll) and shows one extra window as per our requirement. I used to do remote desktop to XP machine from my machine. After replacing Windows GINA with customized GINA I tried to log off from the XP Machine(I am Using Remote Desktop Connection to log in), Log off completes successfully(After showing saving your settings, Closing network connections etc) and I will get log in screen which we get during log on, this is not expected comapred to other flavors of Windows OD. Where as in other operating systems such as Windows XP 64 Bit/ Windows 2003 32/64 Bit even after replacing the Windows Gina with custom GINA remote desktop session closes after log off from the machine. I have tried installing Novell GINA on Windows XP 32 Bit but i have not find any issue with that. I have Tried upgrading XP SP2 to SP3, still i am facing the same issue. Whether anyone faced Such issues when worked with Windows GINA? Thanks in advance Santhosha K S

• How can I get vim to draw lines correctly for remote editing?

  I'm attempting to edit files on a remote system. I've ssh'd to the system and I start editing with vim. However, I notice that all the lines are drawing 2 lines above where they really exist in the file. I assumed this was a problem I could fix by dropping my terminal settings to something simpler, but that didn't help. My TERM variable was set to xterm-color. I set it to vt100, but that didn't fix the line drawing issue. I also noticed that this seems to be specific to vim. emacs doesn't show the problem, and I haven't noticed any odd drawing artifacts in less, more or other paging tools. Other specifics: I'm ssh-ing into the remote system from a Mac, using the Terminal.app. The remote system is running Ubuntu 9.04. I'm hoping there is something I just need to set in vim to get it to play nice. If it allows me to keep syntax color highlighting, so much the better.

  Hello, I am using Netbeans 6.8 and Glassfish v3.0. I created an ejb module and created entity classes from database and then created stateless session bean with remote interface. Say eg. @Remote public interface customerRemote{ public void add(String name, String address); public Customer find(Integer id); } @Stateless public class customerBean implements customerRemote{ //implementations of methods } Then i created a new web application. But now how do i access remote ejb's in my web application. I could lookup a bean with jndi name but what i want to know is, what type of object it will return? How do i typecast it in customerRemote? I don't have any class named customerRemote in my web application. So, how do i do it? Also, what about the entity class Customer? There is no such class named Customer in my web application also. All ejb's and entity classes are in separate ejb module. Please help me :(

• Bad idea to force creation of Mercurial remote heads (ie. branches)?

  I am developing a centralized web application, and I have a centralized Mercurial repository. Locally I created a branch in my repository hg branch my_branch I then made some changes and committed. Then when I try to push, I get abort: push creates new remote branch 'my_branch'! (did you forget to merge? use push -f to force) I've just been using push -f. Is this bad? I WANT multiple branches in my central, remote repository, as I want to 1) back up my work and 2) allow other developers to develop with me on that branch. Is it bad or something to have branches in my remote repository or something? Should I not be doing push -f (and if not, what should I do?)? Why does Joel say this in his tutorial: Occasionally I've made a change in a branch, pushed, switched to another branch, and changes I had made in that branch I switch to were mysteriously reverted to a previous version from several commits ago. Maybe this is a symptom of forcing a push?

• Best way for an external (remote) graphics designer to style ASP.NET MVC 4 app?

  My customer has his own graphics designer he wants to use to style his web application we're building in ASP.NET MVC 4. Our solution is in Bitbucket, but if he can't run it what choices do we have? I doubt he uses Visual Studio 2012. One idea is for us to publish to our solution to a file system, send it to him, have him create a local IIS website on his machine (assuming he isn't using a Mac). Mocking data or pointing to a test SQL in Azure isn't a problem. Then he can make changes to .css and .cshtml files. Will this even work? The point is that he needs to be able to test his changes. I know he can modify the views and just check-in. But he needs to deliver a working design. So it seems inefficient. The graphics designer will have access to our test site so he can see how it works, what data we have and fields. Another idea is for him to build a static mock site using just HTML/CSS. Later I'd integrate his styles into customer's solution, split his html into partial views which we use and add Razor syntax. Again, we'd like to leverage graphics designer for all of this. Is there a best practice documented around this subject? How do other teams deal with this situation?

  While i was trying to setup some reports on a SPF 2010 site. After trying to add a Sql Reporting Webpart i get the error: Session state has been disabled for ASP.NET. The Report Viewer control requires that session state be enabled in local mode I never came across that error before when using RSWebaprts in Sharepoint 2007:) But i think is related to ASP.NET sessions state:( Any to fix it you would have to start to make sure the SharePoint Server ASP.NET Session State Service is enabled.
