  • Oracle VM Templates for EBS 12.1.3 for Exalogic Now Available

    Oracle VM Templates for Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1.3 for x86 Exalogic Platform (64 bit) are now available on the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud.  The templates contain all the required elements to create an Oracle E-Business Suite R12 demonstration system on an Exalogic server. You can use these templates to quickly build an EBS 12.1.3 demonstration environment, bypassing the operating system and the software install (via the EBS Rapid Install).   The Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 (64 bit) template for the Exalogic platform is a Oracle Virtual Server Guest template that contains a complete Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 Database Tier and Application Tier Installation.  For additional details, please refer to the following My Oracle Support Note: Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 Database Tier and Application Tier Template for Oracle Exalogic Platform (Note 1499132.1) The Oracle E-Business Suite system is installed on top of Oracle Linux Version 5 update 6.     I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 12 desktop then: Installed WINE from the Ubuntu Software Center. Installed WineTricks from the Ubuntu Software Center. When I type the following commands in the terminal: sudo winetricks dotnet40 I get this error message: wine cmd.exe /c echo '%ProgramFiles%' returned empty string If i try the command without sudo winetricks dotnet40 The output is as follows Executing w_do_call dotnet40 Executing load_dotnet40 ------------------------------------------------------ dotnet40 does not yet fully work or install on wine.   • Terminal Errors/Package Erros

    After running some updates a week ago or so, I've noticed that after any installations via the Ubuntu Software Center or any installed in the GUI have given an error message stating that there was a package error. Also any installations done through the terminal have given the E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) message at the end of each install. Oddly, the software is still installed and seems to function properly. Is there any way to get rid of this? I've tried to run apt-get autoclean as recommended on another site, but this doesn't seem to work. I'm fairly new to Linux/Ubuntu, just FYI.

  • Do you develop with security in mind?

    I was listening to a podcast on Security Now and they mentioned about how a lot of the of the security problems found in Flash were because when flash was first developed it wasdn't built with security in mind because it didn't need to thus flash has major security flaws in its design etc. I know best practices state that you should build secure first etc. Some people or companies don't always follow 'best practice'... My question is do you develop to be secure or do you build with all the desired functionality etc then alter the code to be secure (Whatever the project maybe) (I realise that this question could be a possible duplicate of Do you actively think about security when coding? but it is different in the fact of actually process of building the software/application and design of said software/application)

    Installing Oracle Event Processing 11g Earlier this month I was involved in organizing the Monument Family History Day.  It was certainly a complex event, with dozens of presenters, guides and 100s of visitors.  So with that experience of a complex event under my belt I decided to refresh my acquaintance with Oracle Event Processing (CEP). CEP has a developer side based on Eclipse and a runtime environment. Developer Install The developer install requires several steps (documentation) Download required software Eclipse  (Linux) – It is recommended to use version 3.6.2 (Helios) Install Eclipse Unzip the download into the desired directory Start Eclipse Add Oracle CEP Repository in Eclipse http://download.oracle.com/technology/software/cep-ide/11/ Install Oracle CEP Tools for Eclipse 3.6 You may need to set the proxy if behind a firewall. Modify eclipse.ini If using Windows edit with wordpad rather than notepad Point to 1.6 JVM Insert following lines before –vmargs -vm \PATH_TO_1.6_JDK\jre\bin\javaw.exe Increase PermGen Memory Insert following line at end of file -XX:MaxPermSize=256M Restart eclipse and verify that everything is installed as expected. Server install The server install is very straightforward (documentation).  It is recommended to use the JRockit JDK with CEP so the steps to set up a working CEP server environment are: Download required software JRockit – I used Oracle “JRockit 6 - R28.2.5” which includes “JRockit Mission Control 4.1” and “JRockit Real Time 4.1”. Oracle Event Processor – I used “Complex Event Processing Release 11gR1 (11.1.1.6.0)” Install JRockit Run the JRockit installer, the download is an executable binary that just needs to be marked as executable. Install CEP Unzip the downloaded file Run the CEP installer,  the unzipped file is an executable binary that may need to be marked as executable. Choose a custom install and add the examples if needed. It is not recommended to add the examples to a production environment but they can be helpful in development. Voila The Deed Is Done With CEP installed you are now ready to start a server, if you didn’t install the demoes then you will need to create a domain before starting the server. Once the server is up and running (using startwlevs.sh) you can verify that the visualizer is available on http://hostname:port/wlevs, the default port for the demo domain is 9002. With the server running you can test the IDE by creating a new “Oracle CEP Application Project” and creating a new target environment pointing at your CEP installation. Much easier than organizing a Family History Day!

  • What is the purpose of the "non-endorsement clause" in the New BSD license?

    Note: This question is not about the "obnoxious BSD advertising clause". The New BSD license does not contain that clause, and is compatible with the GPL. I'm trying to pick between the New BSD license and the MIT license for my own projects. They are essentially identical, except the BSD license contains the following clause: Neither the name of the <organization> nor the names of its contributors may be used to endorse or promote products derived from this software without specific prior written permission. Why would anyone want to use this clause? What's wrong with gaining some notoriety if someone makes a well-known piece of software using your code? Also, wouldn't dictating what users can and cannot do with your given name fall outside the domain of intellectual property?

    My environment: 2 PCs, a desktop and a laptop, both on Oneiric they are connected together by ethernet wire nfs-common is installed and configured: the desktop is the server a TV tuner card is installed on the desktop, I can watch TV with the software Me-TV It works fine, TV on desktop, and my network too: I share folders thanks to NFS. But I would like more: How can I share my TV tuner card from the desktop and be able to watch TV on the laptop too? If possible I would like a solution that allows me to keep using the software Me-TV, on both PCs. I bet that there is a solution to create a fake TV card on the 2nd PC with xNBD. I'm trying xnbd-server --target /dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0 but I cant make it work. Trying to understand some examples of xNBD command lines, it seems to be meant only for sharing disk player. If someone as ever used xNBD, he's welcome.

  • Configuring 12voip with a sip softphone in Ubuntu

    I want to change my work PC to Ubuntu but one thing is in my way... We use 12voip since we didn't find lower calling rates in Europe. The thing is 12voip doesn't have a Linux program :-(. I tried to set it up with instructions from this page (under 'Software configuration') with almost all clients that the software center of Ubuntu offers, but the best results i got to had a lot of echo. Now i must admit this echo exists also with the Windows version of the program, but there- once you use headphones its gone, while on the Ubuntu sip phones it stays and its worst in general. I don't know if my problem has to do with codecs or something else, and i was hoping someone can help check it and tell me which sip phone i can work with, and instructions on how to configure it correctly. Btw i tried Google, and all i could find were questions like mine or similar, no good answers. Thanks!

    I am trying to install eclipse Juno on 12.04. I did all the things instructed in this link. But whenever I install any new software (Say CDT or Pydev) on Eclipse, the new softwares are gone upon opening the Eclipse app again. I then have to open Eclipse again with root privileges to install all the software. I also ran into many problems with linking the include library for Eclipse CDT. Can anyone help me with installing Juno in a way that I do not need root access every time I change configurations in Eclipse?

    I am a graduate Computer Science student (Data Mining and Machine Learning) and have good exposure to core Java (3 years). I have read up on a bunch of stuff on the following topics: Design patterns, J2EE Web services (SOAP and REST), Spring, and Hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff -- over my free time of course -- to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + SVN, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just want to build this stuff to learn, so I don't really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus as it fits with my research but is absolutely not necessary since this project is more to learn to do large scale software development.

  • SQL SERVER – Iridium I/O – SQL Server Deduplication that Shrinks Databases and Improves Performance

    Database performance is a common problem for SQL Server DBA’s.  It seems like we spend more time on performance than just about anything else.  In many cases, we use scripts or tools that point out performance bottlenecks but we don’t have any way to fix them.  For example, what do you do when you need to speed up a query that is already tuned as well as possible?  Or what do you do when you aren’t allowed to make changes for a database supporting a purchased application? Iridium I/O for SQL Server was originally built at Confio software (makers of Ignite) because DBA’s kept asking for a way to actually fix performance instead of just pointing out performance problems. The technology is certified by Microsoft and was so promising that it was spun out into a separate company that is now run by the Confio Founder/CEO and technology management team. Iridium uses deduplication technology to both shrink the databases as well as boost IO performance.  It is intriguing to see it work.  It will deduplicate a live database as it is running transactions.  You can watch the database get smaller while user queries are running. Iridium is a simple tool to use. After installing the software, you click an “Analyze” button which will spend a minute or two on each database and estimate both your storage and performance savings.  Next, you click an “Activate” button to turn on Iridium I/O for your selected databases.  You don’t need to reboot the operating system or restart the database during any part of the process. As part of my test, I also wanted to see if there would be an impact on my databases when Iridium was removed.  The ‘revert’ process (bringing the files back to their SQL Server native format) was executed by a simple click of a button, and completed while the databases were available for normal processing.     In the last few month and maybe even years, Ubuntu and Canonical often were criticised for developing software and desktop components without talking to other groups in the free software community. I don't want to comment on this topic, but I see problems arising with creating a "proprietary" solution for displaying indicators and progressbars with a launcher like Unity. In the world of free and open Desktop Environments we often try to standardize parts and libraries or write specifications to increase collaboration between different desktops. We have the instrument of http://freedesktop.org and a lot of specifications are getting implemented by the major Desktop Environments. In this context, proposing a standard for those indicators would be a great step towards better interoperability between desktops. These indicators represent a great feature on the Linux Desktop and I'm sure that other projects like AWN, Docky, etc. would pick them up.
