• Mocking User.Identity in ASP.NET MVC

  I need to create Unit Tests for an ASP.NET MVC 2.0 web site. The site uses Windows Authentication. I've been reading up on the necessity to mock the HTTP context for code that deals with the HttpContext. I feel like I'm starting to get a handle on the DI pattern as well. (Give the class an attribute of type IRepository and then pass in a Repository object when you instantiate the controller.) What I don't understand, however, is the proper way to Mock the Windows Principal object available through User.Identity. Is this part of the HttpContext? Does any body have a link to an article that demonstrates this (or a recommendation for a book)? Thanks, Trey Carroll

• SSL Form Post in ASP.NET MVC 1.0

  I'd like to use SSL for the post action on the login page of my MVC 1.0 app. I've seen some articles related to the [RequireSSL] attribute in ASP.NET MVC Futures. However, since this works using a redirect, I assume it's not an option (can't redirect a POST, correct?). Ultimately, my goal is to get the Html.BeginForm method to render "https://..." as the form's action so that I can secure the information being posted (login info). How have others handled this?

  I have an online application that all of its pages use HTTPS. I have 3 questions: Does Google index HTTPS pages? I have a password protected single ASP.NET page (using HTTPS). Password protection is basically achieved by a Session object. When the correct password is entered, it hides the login panel and displays the same page which has a sensitive data. Is this page indexed by Google? I have a Secure folder that I implemented Forms Authentication. All pages in folder use HTTPS as well. Are the pages in this folder indexed by Google?   I apologize in advance for this likely being asked before. I have an asp.net 2.0 web application and am trying to set the session timeout. My first attempt was to add this to the web.config. < sessionState mode="InProc" timeout="300" Users would tell me though that after about 20 minutes of being idle and then trying to do something again on the site they'd be redirected back to the login page. So now I'm trying timeout="60" in my < forms tag in the web.config. I also tried Session.Timeout=60 in my global.asax. Should these work? Do I need something else? Thank you for your time and help.

• Membership provider stopped working on using Membership Provider in ASP.Net MVC

  I have a production ASP.Net MVC application that has been using the membership service. It has worked fine, up until today. Nothing has changed on the server, but I now have this error: System.Configuration.Provider.ProviderException: The 'System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider' requires a database schema compatible with schema version '1'. However, the current database schema is not compatible with this version. You may need to either install a compatible schema with aspnet_regsql.exe (available in the framework installation directory), or upgrade the provider to a newer version. I checked the asp_schemaversions table, and it looks fine. Please any help would be appreciated.

  Hi Guys, I need suggestions with regards to the multiple file upload using File Upload control in asp.net(along with C#). I have a File Upload Control, so i click the 'Browse' button and when i select a file from the select file dialog, i want the file to be shown as a link below the File Upload Control( somewhat similar to gmail). This file should be seen such a way that it can be deleted, if i wanted to. And also i should be able to upload another file from the File Upload control. All these files should be uploaded to a location when i use a button click event in the end. I think i have made myself clear. Any Suggestions are really helpful. Thanks.

I have found a way to do this but I am not satisfied with it as it seems like a hack. I have used it before for a single application and works well but was wondering if it technically possible to use this architecture for a SaaS? Once code base but custom plugins for each customer using some form of custom folders to organize the plugins? Idea would be to use one main code base instead of having to maintain code for N number of clients. Ideas? Thoughts? Experience either way?

• MSXML2.XMLHTTP Request to validate entered URL in ASP Classic

  Hi guys. Thanks in advance for any help received. I want to allow our client to enter a URL into a text field which then checks whether the URL exists and works. There are 3 possible outcomes I want to check for: A status of 200 - OK, A status of 500 - Server Error, Or a status of 404 - page not found. When executing the following code in ASP classic I get a status code of 12007 when I should be getting 404. Is this because it can't find a webserver to return a code of 404?   I have a property int? MyProperty as a member in my datasource (ObjectDataSource). Can I bind this to a TextBox, like <asp:TextBox ID="MyTextBox" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("MyProperty") %>' /> Basically I want to get a null value displayed as blank "" in the TextBox, and a number as a number. If the TextBox is blank MyProperty shall be set to null. If the TextBox has a number in it, MyProperty should be set to this number. If I try it I get an exception: "Blank is not a valid Int32". But how can I do that? How to work with nullable properties and Bind? Thanks in advance!

I recently asked this question Create/Edit/Save data in a jQuery pop-up for ASP.NET-MVC and Linq2Sql I'm sure that the response is the right way to go, but I just can't figure out how to write the back-end code to make it work. I originally made my site by following the nerddinner tutorial. I have a subcontracts model and a subcontracts controller. On my subcontract entry page, I'd like for there to be a pop-up/dialog box where the user can enter a new company if the company isn't already in the drop-down list. Do I need to create a new company controller? I wouldn't have a company model b/c the company table is linked to my subcontracts table within the subcontracts dbml. Can anyone point me to an example somewhere? Or offer any help.

However, when users from other offices (separate network, with firewall open) they get a password request input box. Why are they getting the password dialogue? What is the recommended way identify users of the app? I want to avoid using password, but windows identities. Anyone attempting to access the application is inside a trusted network.   Scenario: I have a regular aspx page with a form. When someone clicks a button the form submitted via post like normal. HOWEVER. The page where the form resides is the default page(Default.aspx). So when someone goes to the site: http://site.com/ and submits the forms he gets redirected to http://site.com/default.aspx. I tried setting the action of the form to http://site.com/. However asp.net does not allow to use root urls with a POST. So is there any workaround? Ajax is not an option.

  I have following Gridview: <asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" CssClass="table" DataKeyNames="groupId" DataSource="<%# dsUserGroupsSelected %>" DataMember="Group" etc....> and after firing RowDeleting event handler: protected void GridView1_RowDeleting(object sender, GridViewDeleteEventArgs e) e.Keys is empty. Moreover, in runtime if I check dsUserGroupsSelected.Group.PrimaryKey it is poulated with: {System.Data.DataColumn[1]} [0]: {groupId} so it's really odd to me. Am I missing something? I have this kind of a workaround: int groupId = (int)GridView1.DataKeys[e.RowIndex].Value; which will work just fine, but I just can't get it why e.Keys (and e.Values) would be empty!? Any ideas?

  Is a pre-made system available to confirm a new user's email address for an ASP.NET site? I'm using the pre built Authentication and Role providers. The system should be able to send email to a user when they're added to the system that requires them to click a link, that link would then "unlock" the account. Users shouldn't be able to login until their email is verified. I could probably figure out how to roll this on my own but I'd prefer to use a standard method if one exists.

  Hello, I thought that this was easier… I have a asp:hyperlink control, with target=”_blank”, pointing to the file I want the user to download. My plan is to track the number of times, the users click on this link. I thought in placing it in ajax update panel, to catch the postback and avoid full page refresh. However, hyperlink doesn’t have a onClick method. On the other hand I could use a linkbutton, which has a onClick built in. But It’s harder to make the file open in a new window… and I would also have to do something like: Response.AppendHeader("Content-Disposition","attachment; filename=myImage.jpg"); But I heard that the above approach has some problems with PPT, PPTX, PPS, PPSX… What is you'r opinion on this? How and why, would you do it?

  Hi all, I have a cascading dropdown (3 of them) Type, Categories and Sub Categories. Type loads first and upon selection of Type, Category load and selection of Category, Sub Category loads. Also i have 2 buttons, "Add Category" and "Add Sub Category" Upon clicking on these buttons, i call a JQuery Modal Form to add them. I use Webmethod in code behind to add them to database This works perfectly in ASPX page. Since I need use this in 3-4 pages, i thought of making the above as User control (ASCX). When i try to use this in a webpage, the webmethods in ASCX don't get called. Is my approach correct? what should be done for my scenario lOoking forward for your suggestions.   I am experimenting with FormsAuthentication (using ASP.NET MVC2) and it is working fairly well. However, one case I can't work out how to deal with is validating the user identity on the server to ensure it is still valid from the server's perspective. eg. User logs in ... gets a cookie/ticket Out of band the user is deleted on the server side User makes a new request to the server. HttpContext.User.Identity.Name is set to the deleted user. I can detect this fine, but what is the correct way to handle it? Calling FormsAuthentication.SignOut in the OnAuthorization on OnActionExecuting events is too late to affect the current request. Alternatively I would like to be able to calls FormsAuthentication.InvalidateUser(...) when the user is deleted (or database recreated) to invalidate all tickets for a given (or all) users. But I can't find an API to do this.

  Can someone explain to me how you would use jeditable with an ASP.NET web form (and C# codebehind). I've got a bit of experience with web forms but not very complicated stuff, and haven't used much jquery before, and this is just puzzling me. I understand how to put it in and attach it to the element you want to be editable, it's what jeditable does when you submit the text field that I don't get. How do you handle that in the webform in order to save the changed text? Hope someone understands my issue... Cheers!

• SQL Server Reporting Services proxy timeout (ASP.NET)

  Morning, We are using SSRS (2005) and have a ASP.NET frontend using the SSRS WebControl. I've boiled the problem down the time it takes for one particular report to be generated is greater than the timeout on the proxy server. It looks like the way the SSRS web control tries to do things is by performing an HTTP request for the report, however the problem with this is the request can timeout potentially before the report has generated. Looking at the HTTP traffic the response is a 504 (gateway timeout). Is there a way to increase the timeout or change SSRS WebControl to use more robust polling mechanism (which isn't dependant on the timeout of the HTTP request). I could be wrong but I don't think ServerReport.Timeout property would resolve the issue we are seeing? Any thoughts? Philip

  Hi, I have a CascadingDropDown on an ASP.NET page. Now, the prompt text is "Select State". (list of states). However, on a different version of this page (ie querystring), i might want to set the selected index to "California" for example. How can i do this? The web service used by the ajax control (ie GetStates) gets invoked at the same time the jquery document.ready function is triggered (ie asynchronously). So when i try and set the selected index in jquery, the items are not yet bound. Is there a way to attach a handler to the ajax dropdown so that i can set the selected index once the webservice call has completed, and the items are bound? Thanks in advance.

Best Practices Question – Is it ok to pass the DataTable to the business layer and use the DataTable from the business layer for an ObjectDataSource in the presentation layer, or Should I transfer the data in the data table into a List and use the List for an ObjectDataSource in the presentation layer? If I should transfer the data to a List, should that be done in the data access layer or the business layer? Does it make a difference if the data needs to be edited before being displayed?
