  • Fastest browser to run over a forwarded X11 session

    - by warren
So far I have tried Firefox (latest and greatest) and Chrome (also latest and greatest), and while Chrome runs faster than Firefox over X11 from my CentOS server to my Windows 7 workstation, it's still pretty sluggish. What other GUI browsers are available for Linux that would [likely] run faster than Chrome? I've not tried Opera 11, but have had many issues with it under Windows and Mac OS X directly, so am waiting for a new version before going that route.

  • Hidden features of Ubuntu

    - by Tom Brito
That I know: In command line, use TAB to autocomplete the commands. You need just to select a text to copy it, and use mouse middle button to paste. Which other "untold" secrets Ubuntu hides? obs. I don't know which of the items I told are for any Linux or Ubuntu specific.

  • Forgotten LUKS passphrase

    - by Ansh David
i am stuck with a big problem. I have encrypted my linux drive with LUKS and now I can't remember it. During boot, it prompts me for the passphrase, but I went into troubleshooting mode and deleted the entry from /etc/crypttab so at least I can boot now into my account but that doesn't solve the problem. I can't access my drive /dev/sda5. Can someone please show me a way to crack the passphrase or is there no way around it.

  • Allowing an user to execute just something

    - by Jack
Hello, which is the best way to allow a new user that I just created on ubuntu linux 9.04 to execute a script that requires some sudo without allowing him to the sudoers? The fact is that I want to give the user just the ability to execute that script, without letting him to do anything more. Is there a simple way to do it?

  • Is there a way to setup a hotspot with a domain name rather than IP address?

    - by WagnerMatosUK
Basically I've setup a hotspot and its currently being accessed through an IP address. I'd like to use a hostname instead. This is for internal use only, meaning the ODROID device which is being used to as Access Point is connected to the internet via ethernet and only a few devices will access the AP. My setup details: Arch Linux on an ODROID U3 device, using hostapd and dhcp server. PS: I'm quite inexperienced with network so I might be missing something obvious here. Thanks in advance

  • Write, wall, who and mesg

    - by miniBill
I want to set up a server with a lot of users so that (in order of importance): Users cannot obtain ip addresses of other users with who, or last Users cannot wall Users can write to each other Users are able to selectively mesg n other users, as opposed to simply blocking everyone Point 1 is easily solved by a 660 on wtmp and utmp, but I don't know how to achieve the other points The server runs Gentoo Linux

  • Install boot loader with no operating system on hard drive

    - by Jeet Robert
I am trying to reset — or rather, install — a boot loader on my hard drive. I initially had a Linux distro installed, which I completely wiped out. Now, when I try to install Windows 7 from my USB, my machine says Missing operating System And when I don't boot with USB, it says "bootmgr is missing" So now I am wondering, how I can install a boot loader, so I can install Windows 7?

  • Automake thumbnail

    - by Webmaster
What I need to do is a program that given (as a command line argument) a directory with more directoreies inside, and 4 Pics inside of each dir, the program makes a thumbnail of the 4 files and glues them together (2 rows, 2 columns) and renames that image to the name of the directory. I think it could be done with a combination of a program and shell scripting (I'm experienced in M$, but new to linux). Some real examples would be great. Thanx in advance

  • Can't boot from CD

    - by Jason Swett
I installed Ubuntu on a PowerBook G4 and it only works about 10% of the time. For this reason I decided to re-install OS X, but my machine won't boot from CD. It also won't boot Ubuntu the vast majority of the time, so I'm kind of screwed. After a ton of tries, I finally got my machine to boot a Linux command line. Is there anything I can do at this point to make my machine more runnable, just for the sake of installing OS X?

  • UDISKS instead of HAL

    - by MeJ
Does anybody have some expirence with udisks, because HAL won't be longer supported on the most linux distribution, so I am thinking of to use udisks for UDI in $(hal-find-by-property --key storage.bus --string usb) do HAL_TMP=`hal-get-property --udi $UDI --key storage.removable.media_available` if [ "$HAL_TMP" = "true" ]; then HAL_DEV=$(hal-get-property --udi $UDI --key block.device) HAL_SIZE=$(hal-get-property --udi $UDI --key storage.removable.media_size) HAL_TYPE=$(hal-get-property --udi $UDI --key storage.drive_type) How do I have to adapt the above mentioned commands but use udisks instead of hal Thanks!

  • Testifying rasing net.core.somaxconn can make a difference

    - by petermolnar
I got into an argument on the net.core.somaxconn parameter: I was told that it will not make any difference if we change the default 128. I believed this might be enough proof: "If the backlog argument is greater than the value in /proc/sys/net/core/somaxconn, then it is silently truncated to that value" http://linux.die.net/man/2/listen but it's not. Does anyone know a method to testify this with two machines, sitting on a Gbit network? The best would be against MySQL, LVS, apache2 ( 2.2 ), memcached.

  • Install Windows control panel applet in Wine

    - by Scribble Master
I want to add the bthprops.cpl dll (The bluetooth control panel applet) to my wine install under Ubuntu 10.04 since it is required for Dolphin Emulator. http://www.dolphin-emulator.com/ I copied the file from my windows install into the System32 folder in .wine and into the folder where the application I am trying to run is, but wine still fails to load it. Is there anything else I need to do to make the dll accessible for wine programs? (Please don't suggest the native linux Version of Dolphin as a fix - it is not working for me)

  • Cross-platform file system

I would like my external drives to be readable and writable from Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. FAT32 works, but the 4 GB file size limit is a showstopper these days. Are there any alternatives?

  • What's the correct SELinux type for a directory?

    - by unthar
If I create a new filesystem/directory off of / and I set the Linux permissions to 770 I expect the group to be able to read and write files in that directory. SELinux was preventing me from doing this until I changed the SELinux type on that directory to public_content_rw_t. If this is just a directory in which users in that group will share files is this an acceptable SELinux type or should I be using another one? Writing a custom policy seems like overkill for these purposes. Thanks
