• Chmod 644 on /etc/ any way to fix?

  I tried to tab complete something and I guess it wasnt there. I know you are not supposed to set the permissions to /etc/ like that, but my permissions seem to be all messed up. whoami prints out cannot find name for user ID 1002 and I cannot cd into /etc/ anymore. passwd and shadow use 640 and 644 so I am not sure why this is a problem. Regardless, is there any way to fix this? • Using an old PC case and power supply as a HDD Enclosure?

  I have 5 HDD and my computer is not handling the situation very well. hehe There are some towers that I can buy to put 4 of my drives out, but I'm thinking that I could use the power source of a failed computer I have and use it to power the 4 (or at least 3) of the drives. The data cables (SATA) will remain connected to the working computer (so no USB solution). The problem is that the power source will not work unless it is connected to the failing computer motherboard. Is there any way I could use the power source without plunging it to the old motherboard? Any "HOW-TO" links may be useful as well.

  I originally asked and answered this question: How can I use the Homebrew Python version with Homebrew MacVim? These instructions worked on Snow Leopard using Xcode 4.0.1 and associated developer tools. However, they no longer seem to work on Mountain Lion with Xcode 4.4.1. My goal is to leave the system's version of Python completely untouched, and to only install PyPI packages into Homebrew's site-packages directory. I want to use the vim_bridge package in MacVim, so I need to compile MacVim against the Homebrew version of Python. I've edited the MacVim formula to add these to the arguments: --enable-pythoninterp=dynamic --with-python-config-dir=/usr/local/Cellar/python/2.7.3/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib/python2.7/config Then I install with the command: brew install macvim --override-system-vim --custom-icons --with-cscope --with-lua However, it still seems to be somehow using Python 2.7.2 from the system.   I have a full HD TV which has only 2 HDMI ports on it. Since I have more than 2 devices I connect to TV (e.g. laptop, game console, DVD player), it becomes uncomfortable to plug in and plug out HDMI cables every time I need to use the relevant device. I need a cheap solution to increase the number of my HDMI ports at least to 3. What type of splitter do you recommend? Does the quality of splitter matter, or do they all produce the same audio & video quality?

  Hi guys, I have a really annoying problem: essentially, Adobe Flash is not working anymore. For instance, I cant watch any clip on youtube and I always get a black screen saying: Movie not loaded ... I have the newest Flash version (10.0.45.2), and the problem is the same with IE, Firefox or Chrome. I am using WIN XP and I turned of Antivirus software as well as Firewall, still I cant watch any flash stuff. Anyone an idea what could have happened in the last week? • Trouble installing ubuntu server on virtualbox (osx)

  Hello all, I'm trying to install lucid lynx 10.04.2 server on a virtualbox on snow leopard. I have 2 server iso files freshly downloaded one i386 and one 64bit. When I try to start the virtual machine with either one set to be the cd drive I'm getting the same error: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ub. Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT). Unknown error creating VM (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT). Couldn't find anything on it on google so I'm trying to see if anyone else has dealt with this issue. Thanks much in advance! edit: just downloaded the 32bit desktop edition to same avail edit2: ran Disk Utility' replair permissions then restarted. New error VERR_SUPLIB_WORLD_WRITABLE (instead of VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT)

• Problems with chip fan and CPU fan

  I have a five-year-old ASUS motherboard that has been working fine for me for years, until I attempted to power it on yesterday and got a CPU fan speed and chip fan speed warning. Cracking open the case and powering the computer on, I can see the chip fan working, but it appears to be hitting something as it makes a very loud buzzing noise. The CPU fan, meanwhile, starts up when I power on, but slows down and stops after a few seconds! How can I address these problems? Is there any way to fix these sort of fan speed issues without just replacing the fan (which in the case of the chip fan, probably means replacing the whole motherboard)?

• Alternate Client for Cisco Unified Personal Communicator protocol

  At work we have an in-house chat system using CUPC. Does anyone else out there use this? There are a few things I do not like about this client: Where's the chat log? If I close the window out, I have no way of getting my conversation back. Tabbed interface? That would be nice. I hate having multiple chat windows up, having to arrange them around my desktop as more people start talking to me. I don't like that I have to use this one-off application for this protocol when other chat clients will handle 99% of the other protocols I use. Tell me: Is the protcol an open standard for which other applications have support? (pidgin, adium, digsby, etc.) If not, can I overcome these issues from within CUPC? Perhaps there are newer versions of the client that overcome these issues.

• Outlook activesync not pushing changes to devices

  I recently set up my account outlook.com account and connected Outlook 2013 to it using ActiveSync. For a while, it was pushing changes I made, for example, from the web client to my phone and my Outlook when an email was deleted, moved, etc. The change was instant. Now all of a sudden, I have to manually refresh to see changes on either device. What happened? I just set up my wife's email account and it works fine, though she has no emails in it yet. I have several hundred. Why is mine not pushing sync changes and hers is? Thanks.

  Good Morning, in windows XP there is a registry setting called ScreenSaverGracePeriod which lets you set a time period between the activation of the screensaver and locking of the screen. As as result, as soon as you see the screensaver beeing activated, you have X seconds to press a key or move the mouse in order to avoid having to log in again. Unfortunately, this setting isn't working on my machine. I tried everything I could find on the net (setting the period as stirng or number), but it still does not work. Could it be that some kind of security suite (Symantec) or anything else is blocking this feature? Cheers, Ralf

• Tooltips shadow stuck on desktop

  I tends to get this problem from time to time. The tooltips with a shadow appearing on top of everything. It's the shadow of the tooltips not disappearing after the tooltips disappear. The last one I had the tooltips was from the wifi connection list at the systray. This problem also happen to me on another computer. Both running Win7 with ATI gpu. I found this similar post Menu command stuck on screen but none of the solution helped. In fact the "Fade or slide tooltips into view" has been unchecked from the beginning. Ending task of "dwm.exe" also doesn't help. So far the only way to resolve this by restarting window. I can't post picture yet, so can't show any screenshot. Edit: Just tested a few more trick which doesn't work. 1. Turn of aero 2. Hibernate 3. Switch main display to external display and switch back. 4. Change resolution
