  I am a rather oldschool developer with some basic knowledge of software design principles and a good background on classic (gof) design patterns. While I continue my life as such I see lots of strange buzzwords emerge: Aspectoriented Design, Componentoriented Design, Domain Driven Design, Domain Specific Languages, Serviceoriented (SOA) Design, Test Driven Design, Extreme Programming, Agile Development, Continuous Integration, Dependency Injection, Software Factories ... Is there good book around that I can take with me on a roadtrip while it is taking me on a trip through all (most) of the above, delivering an 10,000 foot view on modern software archiceture and desing principles and approaches.

• LocalUser access for WCF hosted in IIS

  I have tried every combination to allow unauthenticated access to WCF as in "LocalUser" accounts, in IIS without success. Here is what I've most recently tried: wsHttpBinding with Message security and mode set to "None". IIS anonymous access enabled, all others disabled, folder level access at default (but granted read access to "Users" which is all users in our domain). I understand I may not have provided enough information to solve the issue, but perhaps somebody can point me in the right direction - is this likely to be a IIS configuration issue or a WCF configuration issue... if WCF, is it likely to be a client level or server level issue? The error I get when attempting to access here is "User is not authenticated". We have ASMX services in the domain which are behaving properly, I am the first developer using WCF here.

• Howto allow "Illegal characters in path" ?

  I have a MVC.NET application with one route as follows: routes.MapRoute("member", "member/{id}/{*name}", new { controller = "member", action = "Details", id = "" }, new { id = @"\d+" }); Thus, a link could be something like this: http://domain/member/123/any_kind_of_username This works fine in general but if the path contains illegal characters (e.g. a double qoute: http://domain/member/123/my_"user"_name) I get a "System.ArgumentException: Illegal characters in path." After much googling the best suggestions seems to be to make sure that the url doesn't contain any such characters. Unfortunately, that is out of my control in this case. Is there a way to work around this?

• Rails ActiveResource Associations

  I have some ARes models (see below) that I'm trying to use associations with (which seems to be wholly undocumented and maybe not possible but I thought I'd give it a try) So on my service side, my ActiveRecord object will render something like render :xml => @group.to_xml(:include => :customers) (see generated xml below) The models Group and Customers are HABTM On my ARes side, I'm hoping that it can see the <customers> xml attribute and automatically populate the .customers attribute of that Group object , but the has_many etc methods aren't supported (at least as far as I can tell) So I'm wondering how ARes does it's reflection on the XML to set the attributes of an object. In AR for instance I could create a def customers=(customer_array) and set it myself, but this doesn't seem to work in ARes. One suggestion I found for an "association" is the just have a method def customers Customer.find(:all, :conditions => {:group_id => self.id}) end But this has the disadvantage that it makes a second service call to look up those customers... not cool I'd like my ActiveResource model to see that the customers attribute in the XML and automatically populate my model. • ASP.Net URL rewriting and redirecting....

  I am trying to wrap my head around a URL rewrtie / redirect project I need to work on. We currently have this url: www.domain.com/Details/Detail.aspx?param1=8&param2=12345 Here is what the rewritten URL will look like: www.domain.com/Param1/8/Param2/12345 I am using the ISAPI_Rewrite filter to allow for the "nice" url and make the page think it is still using the old url. That works fine. Now, I need to redirect users, if they use the old URL, to the new URL. I fgiure I would need to use a combination of the filter and an HTTPModule / Handler to perfomr the redirect. Any ideas?

• Sharepoint Foundation 2010 installation problems

  I'm having problems installing development machine for Sharepoint (Foundation) 2010. This is what I did so far on the same machine: Installed a clean Windows 7 x64 with 4GB of RAM without being part of any domain. Just a simple standalone machine. Enabled IIS related features as described here except IIS6 related ones (two of them) Installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Development Edition (DB Engine and Writer being enabled but not SQL Agent) Installed Visual Studio 2010 Premium Started installing Sharepoint Foundation 2010 with first extracting files, changing config to enable Windows 7 installation and then installed it as Server Farm (then Complete) to avoid installing SQL Express. Created a separate SPF_CONFIG local user with Logon on as a service right. Opened SPF Management Shell and run New-SPConfigurationDatabase so I am able to use a non-domain username (SPF_CONFIG that I created in the previous step) But all I get is this: The outcome after this error is: Database Sharepoint2010Config is created User SPF_CONFIG is added to SQL Server and attached to this newly created database as dbowner and checking SQL server security logins this user has following rights: dbcreator securityadmin public

• RIA Services and Shared domainlogic??

  I'm kind of disappointed at Ria Services. I like to work in a domain driven design way, so for example if I'm working with an invoicing system I have an object invoice which will have all methods on it to for example calculate total price from its invoice rows. public decimal Amount { get {return Entries.Sum(x => x.Amount);} } I like to have methods to add a new row to validate in data. public void AddInvoiceRow(Article article, decimal quantity) This is functionality I need on both client and server side. Have I missed something big or is RIA Services not for me? (In the whole, I don't like Silverlight restrictions at all, I mean that we need get; set on every data field we want to transfer for example some fields are not public at all in domain driven design but the technique Silverlight offers forcing us to do bad coding.)

• Tool for parsing smtp logs that finds bounces

  Our web application sends e-mails. We have lots of users, and we get lots of bounces. For example, user changes company and his company e-mail is no longer valid. To find bounces, I parse smtp log file with log parser. Some bounces are great, like 550+#[email protected]. There is [email protected] in bounce. But some do not have e-mail in error message, like 550+No+such+recipient. I have created simple ruby script that parses logs (uses log parser) to find which mail caused something like 550+No+such+recipient. I am just surprised that I could not find a tool that does it. I have found tools like zabbix and splunk for log analysis, but they look like overkill for such simple task. Anybody knows a tool that would parse smtp logs, find bounces and e-mails that cause them? Edit: smtp server is microsoft smtp server.

  The parse_ini_file function removes comments in configuration files. What would you do to keep the comments that are associated with the next line? For example: [email] ; Verify that the email's domain has a mail exchange (MX) record. validate_domain = true Am thinking of using X(HT)ML and XSLT to transform the content into an INI file (so that the documentation and options can be single sourced). • imap_open() says "invalid remote specification" and fails to connect

  Hey I have an .htaccess file with the following code: <Files ~ "item|profile|category|search"> ForceType application/x-httpd-php </Files> What I want is to add a re-write rule as well which changes any body who navigates tot he site ot use http://www.domain.com sintead of http://domain.com I have the code stored somewhere else for it however I can't seem to just place in the file as it corrupts? • Will an Nginx as reverse proxy for Apache help on dynamic content only

  I am planning to move all my static content to a CDN so on my server I only have dynamic content left. I now have Nginx set up as reverse proxy to Apache. The static request that came in where directly delivered by Nginx without having to go to Apache. In this case Nginx handled a large portion of the request and I can clearly see the necessity of Nginx. Now that I moved all the static content to another domain, is there still a need to have nginx in front of Apache. Because now all the request are by default dynamic requests and all go to Apache. Are there any other benefits of having Nginx and Apache running for only dynamic content. My dynamic content is PHP/MySQL Edit: To be clear: I now have Nginx as a reverse proxy. It delivers static and dynamic content. But I am moving my static files to a CDN. Do I then still need Nginx on my domain.

• MS Word: Mailmerge hyperlinks with query get url string with a mergefield.

  Hi, I'm trying to send an email merging one document (docx) with a contacts database (via OleDB). Using MSWord2007, it seems easy (it works for easy things: name, address, ...) but I can't find how fill an query-get url string with a merge field inside an hyperlink. An hyperlink like: Click here where here is an hyperlink to http://domain.com/[email protected] where [email protected] is the address of the contact, a merge field. I've tried the special/merge fields: {HYPERLINK "http://domain.com/test.php?contact={MERGEFIELD contactEmail}" \o "Here"} but it doesn't work, sometimes it merge only the first record and then send all the mails with the same address, I got this alternating the view with ALT+F9. This support doc doesn't work for me because I don't have the complete URL in my database for each contact, and I can't change the design of the table or add a view (it's from the CRM), I don't like to do it exporting the table and adding the field. • ASP.NET GridView sorting on method data

  Hi, I'm binding a GridView to a domain model object, this domain model object has a method for working out a formatted value to display on the grid. I'd like to use this method for my display value, which is fine, but I'd also like to be able to sort on the value returned by that method. My sort expression can only take in a property/field at the moment. Help please! What do I need to do to get this to work? I'm using an SPGridView actually, but that doesn't make a lot of difference to my problem. Thanks.

  I have a IPostInsertEventListener implementation like public class NHibernateEventListener : IPostInsertEventListener, IPostUpdateEventListener which catches some entity inserts and does an additional insert to another table for ETL. Essentially it requires references to the Nhibernate, Domain entity and Repository<> Now where do I go about adding this class? If I add it to ApplicationServices I’ll end up referencing Nhibernate at that layer. If I add this to the Data layer, I’ll have to reference Domain (circular). How do I go implementing this class with S#arp principles? Any thoughts?

• PHP calling PostgreSQL function - type issue?

  I have a function in PostgreSQL / plpgsql with the following signature: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION user_login(TEXT, TEXT) RETURNS SETOF _get_session AS $$ ... $$ Where _get_session is a view. The function works fine when calling it from phpPgAdmin, however whan I call it from PHP I get the following error: Warning: pg_query() [function.pg-query]: Query failed: ERROR: type "session_ids" does not exist CONTEXT: compile of PL/pgSQL function "user_login" near line 2 in /home/sites/blah.com/index.php on line 69 The DECLARE section of the function contains the following variables: oldSessionId session_ids := $1; newSessionId session_ids := $2; The domain session_ids DOES exist, and other functions which use the same domain work when called from the same script. The PHP is as follows: $query = "SELECT * FROM $dbschema.user_login('$session_old'::TEXT, '$session'::TEXT)"; $result = pg_query($login, $query); I have also tried this using ::session_ids in place of ::TEXT when calling the function, however I recieve the same error. Help :o(

  Has anybody some information about accessing Lotus Domino server to fetch entire mail contents by http(s) requests from php linux server? The article by Andrei Kouvchinnikov describes well how to fetch message list in notes mail folders; after obtaining session id during login one can for example select top 100 messages by calling: https://your.server.domain/mail_db/mailbox.nsf/($Inbox)?ReadViewEntries&Start=1&Count=100 And this works perfectly. The problem arises when I am trying to get message contents (0A1DA5EEB7B65277C12576F50055D811 is an example message unique Id): https://your.server.domain/mail_db/mailbox.nsf/($Inbox)/0A1DA5EEB7B65277C12576F50055D811/?OpenDocument Such request in IE shows frameset with data hard to parse, in less common browsers like Opera it informs about unsupported browser. Ideally if it is possible to fetch notes message contents and all attachments by requesting it in the url, has anybody some information what request would it be? Link to Lotus web calls reference would be even more beneficial.

I am developing the application that stores current user and user's role to session state (System.Web.SessionState.HttpSessionState Page.Session). if (Session["username"] == null) Session.Add("username", User.Identity.Name); if (Session["isAdministrator"] == null) Session.Add("isAdministrator", User.IsInRole(domain + "\\Domain Admins")); After I check these session states in code behind for granting permissions to some excecution: if ((bool)Session["isAdministrator"] || computer.Administrators.Contains(Session["username"].ToString())) My question is next: how safe that mechanism is? Is it possible to change the session states using some JavaScript for example or some how else? Thanks :)

• Which distribution website should I pick for my open-source package?

  I wrote an open-source software package, which I'd like to publish (using Apache 2 license). I see various options for how/where to publish/host it: Get my own domain and put it there Put it on Sourceforge Put it on Google Code Put it on Freshmeat ...? What are your experiences / recommendations? What's the current trend among software developers? My only requirements are that I ... can add my own logo on the website can put up some documentation there, get a nice URL that is easy to remember get SVN support (I would also be fine with just uploading a tarball for each new version, it just shouldn't force me to use CVS or any other version control system I'm not familiar with) and of course, the site shouldn't take ownership in the code etc. oh, and it should be free (ok, for registering my own domain I'll be willing to pay a little bit)

• firefox displaying .swf with wrong dimensions

  I can't figure this one out. I have a flex app with fixed dimensions (950 x 700). I'm compiling the swf and using the default wrapper that flex generates. in some instances of Firefox, the dimensions are wrong. On top of that, with different domains, I get the .swf rendered with different dimensions (both wrong). Firefox 3.6.3 on one computer works fine. On another, the dimensions are off. Swf example and if you don't see a clipped swf...here are the screenshots. Rendered incorrectly on one domain And rendered in another domain with different bad dimensions. I'm at a total loss. When I embed the .swf with swfobject, I get the same issue. In the example you see, there's nothing in the app except for a single label centered on the stage.
