• How to emulate wireless in Virtualbox?

  I have WinXP install in virtualbox which host in Linux. I have a TP-Link (TP-WN321G) USB wifi adapter and have the driver installed inside WinXP. When I plug-in the wifi adapter, there is an option show "Ralink 802.11g WLAN [0101]" in the virtualbox's USB icon, tick on that option, the Device Manager able to detect the hardware which shows TP-Link, but when look into the properties, it says there is no driver was install. I did try to install Ralink driver but still no luck. Just curious why my wifi adapter is TP-Link, but the option show Ralink? May I know how can I emulate the wireless network inside WindowsXP?

• Wyse Z Class Thin Client (WES7) Image Deployment

  We are currently working on deploying a few Wyse WES7 thin clients (Z Class, exact model escapes me at the moment). We have WDM setup, and are able to see new clients show up, interact with them, pull/push images. Our current workflow is something like this: Unpack & boot up the device Disable Windows Firewall, reboot Device shows up in WDM Publish our custom image to the new device. My question is whether or not there is a way I can bypass step 2, and put my image on the client right out of the box. Either using PXE or USB boot disk, such that I can boot into some sort of menu and tell the client to pull a particular image from the WDM server. With HP thin clients, we have a rule setup which detects new clients on the network and pushes our custom image to them first time they show up. I haven't been able to figure it out with Wyse.

• Extension Methods in Dot Net 2.0

  Not that anyone would still need this, but in case you have a situation where the code MUST be .NET 2.0 compliant and you want to use a cool feature like Extension methods, there is a way.  I saw this article when looking for ways to create extension methods in C++, C# and VB:  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc163317.aspx The author shows a simple  way to declare/define the ExtensionAttribute so it's available to 2.0 .NET code. • How do you use environment variables, such as %CommonProgramFiles%, in the PATH and have them recogn

  I'm trying to add C:\Program Files\Common Files\xxx\xxx to the system PATH environment variable by appending %CommonProgramFiles%\xxx\xxx to the existing path. After rebooting, I open a command prompt and check the PATH. It expands correctly. However, when using Process Explorer from Sysinternals to view the Environment variables on services.exe, it shows the unexpanded version. Coincidentally, the paths using %SystemRoot% expand and are recognized just fine. I've tried altering the PATH through the Environment Variables window from System Properties and through direct Registry manipulation, neither seems to work. Is it possible to use other environment variables, besides %SystemRoot% in PATH and have services.exe understand it?

• How to login as other in ubuntu 12.04

  i have upgraded my ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04. i could not see other login option in the login screen. it shows only Guest login and User login. The User Login ask only password and i had never entered in as User login so that i do not know about password of User login. my problem is how to login as root from the login screen? how can i get Other login option to login as root or some other user? before ask this question i have tried the following: try to add the greeter-show-manual-login=true line at the bottom of /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf file as Guest login but i get access denied error. i do not know the password of User login (ask only password while login) to purpose of adding above line. from the safe mode login, i could login as root but i could not add the above line the lightdm.conf file . i got read only error so that i tried to change the permission to 777 like the following > chmod 777 lightdm.conf (i am within the /etc/lightdm/). but i got the error the file marked as/is read only in the file system. In 11.10 version i have created 4 users. i can see that the users exist in 12.10 . so i am sure my self users are not removed while upgrate. • Extract reply to addresses from all emails in an outlook folder

  I've got to send a bulk email out to a bunch of people in reply to emails they sent me. I've got all the original emails stored in a single outlook folder. I want to extract all of the reply-to addresses from the emails in that folder so I can send an email to all of them. http://thetechieguy.wordpress.com/2008/04/22/extracting-email-address-from-outlook-2007-folder/ shows you how to export the FROM address of these emails, however a large amount of them came from a web service that sends emails 'on behalf of' the person I'm trying to mail to. So I need the reply-to address, and the export wizard doesn't do that. Does anyone have a tip on how to do this? This is Outlook 2007 on Exchange 2010.

• DEEP DIVE MVVM at #MIX11

  The public (you!) has spoken, and “Deep Dive MVVM” was selected (along with 11 other open call talks) out of 217 proposals. There were 17’000 votes! These are pretty amazing numbers, and believe me when I tell you that I still didn’t completely realize what just happened! I want to really underline the outstanding quality of many of the talks that were proposed. I decided not to reveal my votes, because I just know too many of the candidates and I had only 10 votes but let’s just say that some of my favorites were picked, and some were not, and I really wish that I can see them all either at MIX or in another conference. I already started putting down ideas for the talk (not too many, because I didn’t want to jinx it) and it should be a really great session. We will, as the title shows, dive deep into the subtleties of MVVM, and explore some techniques that allow to overcome some of the hurdles presented by this pattern. This session will be shaped by many emails that I received over the past year, since “Understanding the MVVM pattern” was presented, and offered, for many, a first look into Model-View-ViewModel. So now’s the chance, comment and let me know what topics you would like to discuss. If you had not done so before, go ahead and watch last year’s session, it will be a great preparation. Let’s talk real life development, let’s explore the problems and find solutions. I already have a nice collection of emails asking questions around MVVM and my goal is to answer as many as I can. Leave a comment and I will do my best to answer these as well. The date/time was not announced yet, so watch this space for details. • Arguments to homologate Firefox in a Company

  I developed a web project for my company and this project was designed to use Mozilla Firefox (including the javascript (jQuery)). However, now the company wants the project to be transferred to Internet Explorer. I know that in Google, there are several explanations about Mozilla Firefox, which I can demonstrate to the company. But is there any link showing that Internet Explorer runs the W3C standards and has several justifications for why using Mozilla Firefox? I searched on youtube and slideshare, but both have a very weak argument for me to select them and show to the company. The company where I work is still very naive to keep Internet Explorer. 1) The project is intranet. Only 400 internal employees can access the web. 2) The company argues that Mozilla Firefox is not approved by the company. Any suggestions? Any link which shows that the developers of the world hate Internet Explorer? A link explaining why developers do not like Internet Explorer? After the answers, I'm thinking of making a great slide with all the necessary arguments to the company homologue firefox. And yet, published in slideshare. EDIT: Someone here must be wondering why I have not designed, also for Internet Explorer. Welllll... As the deadline for project completion is always short, I developed the project focused only on Mozilla Firefox, because the browser Mozilla Firefox most respects W3C standards (and javascript too) than Internet Explorer.

• New Bundling and Minification Support (ASP.NET 4.5 Series)

  This is the sixth in a series of blog posts I'm doing on ASP.NET 4.5. The next release of .NET and Visual Studio include a ton of great new features and capabilities.  With ASP.NET 4.5 you'll see a bunch of really nice improvements with both Web Forms and MVC - as well as in the core ASP.NET base foundation that both are built upon. Today’s post covers some of the work we are doing to add built-in support for bundling and minification into ASP.NET - which makes it easy to improve the performance of applications.  This feature can be used by all ASP.NET applications, including both ASP.NET MVC and ASP.NET Web Forms solutions. Basics of Bundling and Minification As more and more people use mobile devices to surf the web, it is becoming increasingly important that the websites and apps we build perform well with them. We’ve all tried loading sites on our smartphones – only to eventually give up in frustration as it loads slowly over a slow cellular network.  If your site/app loads slowly like that, you are likely losing potential customers because of bad performance.  Even with powerful desktop machines, the load time of your site and perceived performance can make an enormous customer perception. Most websites today are made up of multiple JavaScript and CSS files to separate the concerns and keep the code base tight. While this is a good practice from a coding point of view, it often has some unfortunate consequences for the overall performance of the website.  Multiple JavaScript and CSS files require multiple HTTP requests from a browser – which in turn can slow down the performance load time.  Simple Example Below I’ve opened a local website in IE9 and recorded the network traffic using IE’s built-in F12 developer tools. As shown below, the website consists of 5 CSS and 4 JavaScript files which the browser has to download. Each file is currently requested separately by the browser and returned by the server, and the process can take a significant amount of time proportional to the number of files in question. Bundling ASP.NET is adding a feature that makes it easy to “bundle” or “combine” multiple CSS and JavaScript files into fewer HTTP requests. This causes the browser to request a lot fewer files and in turn reduces the time it takes to fetch them.   Below is an updated version of the above sample that takes advantage of this new bundling functionality (making only one request for the JavaScript and one request for the CSS): The browser now has to send fewer requests to the server. The content of the individual files have been bundled/combined into the same response, but the content of the files remains the same - so the overall file size is exactly the same as before the bundling.   But notice how even on a local dev machine (where the network latency between the browser and server is minimal), the act of bundling the CSS and JavaScript files together still manages to reduce the overall page load time by almost 20%.  Over a slow network the performance improvement would be even better. Minification The next release of ASP.NET is also adding a new feature that makes it easy to reduce or “minify” the download size of the content as well.  This is a process that removes whitespace, comments and other unneeded characters from both CSS and JavaScript. The result is smaller files, which will download and load in a browser faster.  The graph below shows the performance gain we are seeing when both bundling and minification are used together: Even on my local dev box (where the network latency is minimal), we now have a 40% performance improvement from where we originally started.  On slow networks (and especially with international customers), the gains would be even more significant. Using Bundling and Minification inside ASP.NET The upcoming release of ASP.NET makes it really easy to take advantage of bundling and minification within projects and see performance gains like in the scenario above. The way it does this allows you to avoid having to run custom tools as part of your build process –  instead ASP.NET has added runtime support to perform the bundling/minification for you dynamically (caching the results to make sure perf is great).  This enables a really clean development experience and makes it super easy to start to take advantage of these new features. Let’s assume that we have a simple project that has 4 JavaScript files and 6 CSS files: Bundling and Minifying the .css files Let’s say you wanted to reference all of the stylesheets in the “Styles” folder above on a page.  Today you’d have to add multiple CSS references to get all of them – which would translate into 6 separate HTTP requests: The new bundling/minification feature now allows you to instead bundle and minify all of the .css files in the Styles folder – simply by sending a URL request to the folder (in this case “styles”) with an appended “/css” path after it.  For example:    This will cause ASP.NET to scan the directory, bundle and minify the .css files within it, and send back a single HTTP response with all of the CSS content to the browser.  You don’t need to run any tools or pre-processor to get this behavior.  This enables you to cleanly separate your CSS into separate logical .css files and maintain a very clean development experience – while not taking a performance hit at runtime for doing so.  The Visual Studio designer will also honor the new bundling/minification logic as well – so you’ll still get a WYSWIYG designer experience inside VS as well. Bundling and Minifying the JavaScript files Like the CSS approach above, if we wanted to bundle and minify all of our JavaScript into a single response we could send a URL request to the folder (in this case “scripts”) with an appended “/js” path after it:   This will cause ASP.NET to scan the directory, bundle and minify the .js files within it, and send back a single HTTP response with all of the JavaScript content to the browser.  Again – no custom tools or builds steps were required in order to get this behavior.  And it works with all browsers. Ordering of Files within a Bundle By default, when files are bundled by ASP.NET they are sorted alphabetically first, just like they are shown in Solution Explorer. Then they are automatically shifted around so that known libraries and their custom extensions such as jQuery, MooTools and Dojo are loaded before anything else. So the default order for the merged bundling of the Scripts folder as shown above will be: Jquery-1.6.2.js Jquery-ui.js Jquery.tools.js a.js By default, CSS files are also sorted alphabetically and then shifted around so that reset.css and normalize.css (if they are there) will go before any other file. So the default sorting of the bundling of the Styles folder as shown above will be: reset.css content.css forms.css globals.css menu.css styles.css The sorting is fully customizable, though, and can easily be changed to accommodate most use cases and any common naming pattern you prefer.  The goal with the out of the box experience, though, is to have smart defaults that you can just use and be successful with. Any number of directories/sub-directories supported In the example above we just had a single “Scripts” and “Styles” folder for our application.  This works for some application types (e.g. single page applications).  Often, though, you’ll want to have multiple CSS/JS bundles within your application – for example: a “common” bundle that has core JS and CSS files that all pages use, and then page specific or section specific files that are not used globally. You can use the bundling/minification support across any number of directories or sub-directories in your project – this makes it easy to structure your code so as to maximize the bunding/minification benefits.  Each directory by default can be accessed as a separate URL addressable bundle.  Bundling/Minification Extensibility ASP.NET’s bundling and minification support is built with extensibility in mind and every part of the process can be extended or replaced. Custom Rules In addition to enabling the out of the box - directory-based - bundling approach, ASP.NET also supports the ability to register custom bundles using a new programmatic API we are exposing.  The below code demonstrates how you can register a “customscript” bundle using code within an application’s Global.asax class.  The API allows you to add/remove/filter files that go into the bundle on a very granular level:     The above custom bundle can then be referenced anywhere within the application using the below <script> reference:     Custom Processing You can also override the default CSS and JavaScript bundles to support your own custom processing of the bundled files (for example: custom minification rules, support for Saas, LESS or Coffeescript syntax, etc). In the example below we are indicating that we want to replace the built-in minification transforms with a custom MyJsTransform and MyCssTransform class. They both subclass the CSS and JavaScript minifier respectively and can add extra functionality:     The end result of this extensibility is that you can plug-into the bundling/minification logic at a deep level and do some pretty cool things with it. 2 Minute Video of Bundling and Minification in Action Mads Kristensen has a great 90 second video that shows off using the new Bundling and Minification feature.  You can watch the 90 second video here. Summary The new bundling and minification support within the next release of ASP.NET will make it easier to build fast web applications.  It is really easy to use, and doesn’t require major changes to your existing dev workflow.  It is also supports a rich extensibility API that enables you to customize it however you want. • Turn Off Google Chrome Annoying Link Hover

  I like Google Chrome a lot, but there are two problems I have with it. The Address Bar search history feature that I want to turn off, and the feature where I hover over a hyperlink and in the bottom lefthand corner it shows a light blue hover tooltip about where that link goes. I really don't care where a given link goes and wish I could turn that feature off, even if I have to install a Google Chrome Extension. So, for these two reasons, I will not install Google Chrome as my primary browser and will remain with Firefox. So, is there a fix to turn the annoying link hover tooltip feature off?

• HP Pavilion dv6000 graphics issue

  A few days ago my laptop seized up on me while I was playing a game. When I restarted the computer, it sent me back to 640x480 resolution with 16 colors (clearly a graphical issue). In device manager, it shows an error, stating "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" regarding the video card. Upon removing and re-installing the drivers using both Windows Update and my own searching through nvidia's site, it's given me zero results. For kicks, I ran my antivirus (you never know!) and registry cleaner to see if anything would turn up. The antivirus found nothing, but CCleaner found 27 registry errors all dealing with my video card. What could be the cause of this, and what course of action would you recommend in this situation? • No USB 04b4:0307 mike input after 10.04

  I am using an USB phone that is in fact a so-called "sound card" based on the 04b4:0307 chip. In fact, I have two different phones using 04b4:0307 and in fact I have a sound USB key too. This, I believe, is the start of why they call 04b4:0307 "ubiquitous" (instead of oh four bee...). But not "eternal". The mike worked in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 but not later ([email protected]). "not working" means that 04b4:0307 shows in Sound Preference but that its vu-meter is mute. I have posted the full lsusb and the result of tests in various systems here: http://www.papou.byethost9.com/tmp/1043601.html Note: Tests done on VirtualBox (thankfully). But UbuntUnity no longer works on VB, so I used the LinuxMint equivalent. ?hat's fate. I could not find any problem report close enough. What should be my next step? I believe the problem occurs in module snd-usb-audio. One thing I might try if I knew how is hacking a DEB with its 10.04's source. I can hack DEBs. Any hint welcome on how to make a DEB overriding a kernel packed module. I mean that the newly installed module should have precedence, be loaded instead, the module installed with the kernel. TIA !

  I have single partition of 92GB in which I installed Ubuntu 12.04. And for some Unknown reason a message pop ups saying that I only have 1GB of HDD space left. • A Look at the GridView's New Sorting Styles in ASP.NET 4.0

  Like every Web control in the ASP.NET toolbox, the GridView includes a variety of style-related properties, including CssClass, Font, ForeColor, BackColor, Width, Height, and so on. The GridView also includes style properties that apply to certain classes of rows in the grid, such as RowStyle, AlternatingRowStyle, HeaderStyle, and PagerStyle. Each of these meta-style properties offer the standard style properties (CssClass, Font, etc.) as subproperties. In ASP.NET 4.0, Microsoft added four new style properties to the GridView control: SortedAscendingHeaderStyle, SortedAscendingCellStyle, SortedDescendingHeaderStyle, and SortedDescendingCellStyle. These four properties are meta-style properties like RowStyle and HeaderStyle, but apply to column of cells rather than a row. These properties only apply when the GridView is sorted - if the grid's data is sorted in ascending order then the SortedAscendingHeaderStyle and SortedAscendingCellStyle properties define the styles for the column the data is sorted by. The SortedDescendingHeaderStyle and SortedDescendingCellStyle properties apply to the sorted column when the results are sorted in descending order. These four new properties make it easier to customize the appearance of the column by which the data is sorted. Using these properties along with a touch of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) it is possible to add up and down arrows to the sorted column's header to indicate whether the data is sorted in ascending or descending order.   Mountain Lion Server has been one of the most infuriating things ever recently. Above and beyond tons of crashing I've been completely unable to do the following in a way that makes sense to both me and Apple. Name your server srv01.myoffice.domain.com Create an OpenDirectory database as a Master from scratch as dc=domain,dc=com I can rename my server temporarily (taking down vital services in the process due to the automagicliciousness) and create a new profile, however when I switch back to the original domain name the default search base for server related authentication magic is now dc=srv01,dc=myoffice,dc=domain,dc=com. I've tried everything I can think of including using slapconfig backupdb/restoredb and slaving the server off of another then promoting it. This seems rather silly and Apple shows no response to many requests to resolve this. Does anybody out there have the magic to have OpenDirectory work as it should.. being able to give it any domain you want and then having all vital services operate correctly.

• SMTP server (IIS) is running but can't test it with telnet

  I have a Windows 2003 web edition server that I can't seem to get the SMTP relay working. BT4 shows port 25 open. When I try use telnet to test it on my desktop I get: Connecting To XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX...Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connect failed. From the server I get: Microsoft Telnet> o 127.0.0.1 25 Connecting To 127.0.0.1... Connection to host lost. There isn't anything useful in the logs. Any ideas?

• Can´t verify my site on Google (error 403 Forbidden). I have other sites in the same host with no problems whatsoever

  I can´t verify my site on Google. I´ve done this several times for several sites, all inside the same host. I´ve tried the HTML tag method, HTML upload, Domain Name provider (I canp´t find the options that Google tell me that I should activate...), and Google Analytics. I always get this response: Verification failed for http://www.mysite.com/ using the Google Analytics method (1 minute ago). Your verification file returns a status of 403 (Forbidden) instead of 200 (OK). Because Premier Support for Systems includes support for the hardware and the associated operating system, you log any operating system issues through a hardware Service Request. To create a hardware Service Request, you enter the information into the Hardware tab of the Create Service Request screen, but to ensure that the hardware Service Request you enter is recognized and routed appropriately for an operating system issue, you need to change the product from your specific hardware to the operating system that the hardware is running. The example below shows you how to create a Service Request for the operating system when the support level is Premier Support for Systems. The key to success is remembering that the operating system coverage is part of the hardware support. To begin, from anywhere within My Oracle Support, click on the Create SR button as you would to log any SR: Enter your Problem Summary and the Problem Description Next, click on the Hardware tab. Enter the System Serial Number (in this case “12345”) and click on Validate Serial Number: Notice that the product name for the hardware indicates “Sunfire T2000 Server” with an option for a drop down List of Values. Click on the product drop down and choose the correct operating system from the list. In this case I have chosen “OpenSolaris Operating System” Next, you will need to enter the correct operating system version: At this point, you may proceed to complete and submit the Service Request. • Disaster Recovery Plan&ndash;Rebuild System Disk (Dell Server 2900 with PERC RAID controller)

  Goal: Since the system disk is a RAID 1 mirrored set, we can rebuild the shadow set by replacing one of the good sets with a blank disk Steps Shutdown and power down server Remove the disk from bay 9, which is part of the system shadow set. Put this disk on the shelf Insert blank/old disk into the empty bay     Label the new disk before inserting it into the empty bay       Power up server During the booting process, the following message appears: “Some configured disks have been removed from your system…”       Press ‘C’ to Load Configuration utility             Press 'Y' to confirm to load the foreign configuration       In this example, the system shadow set is Disk Group 2.  (Before proceeding, confirm this is the disk group in your case).  Expanding the physical disks shows a disk in bay 8 and a missing disk in bay 9.  This is correct.   Now, we have to include the new inserted disk in this group       RAID controller reporting bay 9 is empty       There may be times when the new disk is seen as a foreign disk.  In this case, do the following:     Foreign disk is reported in bay 9 CTRL-N (Next Page) to Foreign Mgt All the disk groups will be displayed.  Typically, the disk group containing the foreign disk will be grey.  To remove the foreign disk Highlight Controller Press F2 Select Foreign Select Clear (do NOT import the configuration!)       Clear the foreign configuration Now the disk can be brought into the system shadow set disk group as a hot spare   To include the newly inserted disk into the system shadowset disk group, it must be brought in as a hot spare Highlight Disk Group 2 (VD Management) Hit F2 Select 'Manage Ded. HS'     Manage dedicated hot swap Select the disk in bay 9 (Hit space bar to select) Tab to 'OK'.  Hit the return key     Select hot spare to bring into RAID 1 mirror set   Rebuild automatically commences     Rebuild in process   Restart now or restart after rebuild is completed

• dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04, black screen when loading Windows

  I am proficient with Windows and not so much with Linux. Here is my story: Original system came with Windows 7, got openSUSE installed on the second hard drive, and dual boot for this setup worked fine. Wanted to switch to Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 dual boot so I did a Windows system recovery and it appeared to give me back a fresh Windows 7 install. I then go to install Ubuntu 11.04 and the installer informs me I have multiple operating systems already installed. I go to the advanced partitioning option and sure enough Windows 7 is on /sda while openSUSE is still on /sdb. From here I followed this guide (How to dual-boot Linux and Ubuntu with two hard drives) after I had deleted all the openSUSE partitions on /sdb through the Allocate Drive Space tab of the installer. I make the /boot, swap, /, and /home partitions and set the GRUB into the MBR of the second disk (/dev/sdb). Everything installs fine. I reboot, Windows loads automatically, install EasyBCD and add an entry for Ubuntu into the Windows Boot Manager while assigning the type as GRUB2. Reboot the system and it now shows dual booting options for both Windows and Ubuntu. Problem is: while I can use Ubuntu fine when I try to boot into Windows it just gives me a black screen and after a little while the fans start running crazy. If I restart the computer I will sometimes get the message that my system was put into hibernation mode because the temperature got too high (90C) which I presume is in accordance with the fans going crazy. I have linked the output from the Boot Info Script below, any suggestions on how to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated!
