• Vi on Linux: show ^M line endings for DOS-format files

  On Solaris, if you open a file in vi that has Windows line endings, this shows up as ^M at the end of every line. On Linux, vi is cleverer and understands the Windows file format, and does not display ^M. Is there a setting to make Linux vi behave the same as Solaris in this respect? A common problem for us is copying a shell script off a (Windows) dev box and forgetting to dos2unix it, and then being confused when it doesn't work properly. On Solaris the problem is obvious as soon as you vi the file, but not on Linux. Thanks.

• VM can’t connect to outside in bridged mode

  Hi Guys, I am not able to ping any machine(not even the host) from Guest VM in bridged mode. But I got an IP which is on the same subnet as host. I can ping my guest VM from the host and can use ssh to connect to the guest. I am using Vmware workstation 6.5. Guest VM is a centos VM and host is windows xp. Every thing works fine in NAT mode. Any clues as to what could be happening. I tried disabling all the firewalls I have. My virtual network editor shows that my ethernet adapter(the one my host uses) is used for bridging. It is connected. I don't understand how I can get an IP address from DHCP server. I can't ping any of the DNS servers in generated /etc/resolv.conf which are the same as that of my host

• Gateway time out connecting to tethered server from Android

  I've got an Android device running android-wifi-tether. It works as advertised. I connect to it from my Ubuntu 12.04 laptop running Apache 2.2.22. The laptop is manually configured to IP 192.168.2.100 in the hosts file. It can ping itself and access it's own web server through that address. The WiFi tether hotspot gives the laptop the same 192.168.2.100 address(Laptop was configured to match the hotspot address as a troubleshooting step, and could be wrong.) Using ping I can ping the laptop from the phone using the 192.168.2.100 address. Using portscan the phone shows port 80 open on the 192.168.2.100 address. So, everything looks like it's in place, but any attempt to browse to http://192.168.2.100 fails after a few moments with a 504(Gateway time out) Any help would certainly be help.

• Ethernet interface number changed, and old one does not exist, but does not leave IP address

  I have a virtual machine with Mandriva 2007.0 (yes, old - unfortunately we do not have a choice here). Anyway, the problem: Before reboot: active network interface = eth0. No other interfaces present, and network manager confirms this. Static IP address set to 172.31.2.22. No issues, everything working properly, routing et al. -------Reboot--------- After reboot: active network interface = eth1, with a DHCP address. Network manager shows eth0 as disconnected, and not connectable. When I try to set eth1 up with the static IP address (same one), it says "In Use". I then tried ifconfig eth0 172.31.2.29 just to free it up from the eth0 interface so I could use it with eth1 (since this is connected). Result: ifconfig eth0 172.31.2.29 SIOCSIFADDR: No such device eth0: unknown interface: No such device Nothing else changed. Any ideas what could be happening, or at least how I can get my IP address back?

  The sys.dm_tran_locks DMV is used to return active lock resources on your server. Locking is a mechanism used by SQL Server to protect the integrity of data when you have multiple users that may potentially access the same data at the same time. Let’s run a query against this DMV so we can analyze the results. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_tran_locks As we can see, its a lot of lock information returned from this DMV. I will not go into detail about each of the columns returned, but I will touch on the ones that I feel are the most important. The first column in the output is the resource_type column which tells you the type of lock a particular row represents. It could be a PAGE lock, RID, OBJECT, DATABASE, or several other lock types. The resource_database_id represents the id of the database for a particular lock resource. The resource_lock_partition column represents the ID of a lock partition. When you have a table that is partitioned, locks can be escalated to the partition level before going to a table level lock. The request_mode column gives us information about the type of lock that is being requested. From the screenshots above we see RangeS-S locks which represent a share range lock and IS locks which represent Intent Shared locks. The request_status column displays whether the lock has been granted or whether the lock is waiting to be acquired. The request_session_id  shows the session_id that is requesting the lock. This DMV is the best place to go when you need to identify the exact locks that are being held or pending for individual requests. You might need this information when you are troubleshooting severe blocking or deadlocking problems on your server. • How to get .cgi files working in python with Apache on Ubuntu

  I am not really sure whether to post this here or on SO. I think this has more to do with server administration so i am posting it here. I have apache 2.2 installed on my ubuntu 10.10 system with libapache2-mod-python. However when i put a .cgi file with python in it in my apache root (/var/www) it doesn't get executed and all i see is the script i have written. For example this should show the text "Test": #!/usr/bin/python print "Test" However the above script shows up in my browser. Any idea what conf files,etc. i'll have to go through and change to allow this to work ? (the file perms on test.cgi is 755 if that makes a difference.)

• How to recover bitlocker encrypted partition that is now 'unallocated'/'free space'?

  My hard drive had 5 partitions(including 1(some 4-5GB) bit locker encrypted one). When I used disk mgmt I could view 2 partitions(24.4GB and 8.94GB) in green colour labeled Empty space. So, I wanted to merge them and I used minitool partition wizard for the purpose. I don't know, what that software did, but all I was left with 2 partitions and lots of green free space. I recovered 2 partitions using EaseUS partition master, but the bitlocker encrypted partition cannot be searched by it(and also minitool partition recovery). Now, the disk mgmt shows 2 free space partitions of 28.36GB and 8.94GB respectively. P.S. - It contains very important data.

  I am trying to use OpenVPN to access the internet over a secure connection. I have openVPN configured and running on Amazon EC2 in bridge mode with client certs. • Convert a PDF eBook to ePub Format

  Would you like to read a PDF eBook on an eReader or mobile device, but aren’t happy with the performance? Here’s how you can convert your PDFs to the popular ePub format so you can easily read them on any device. PDFs are a popular format for eBooks since they render the same on any device and can preserve the exact layout of the print book.  However, this benefit is their major disadvantage on mobile devices, as you often have to zoom and pan back and forth to see everything on the page.  ePub files, on the other hand, are an increasingly popular option. They can reflow to fill your screen instead of sticking to a strict layout style.  With the free Calibre program, you can quickly convert your PDF eBooks to ePub format. Getting Started Download the Calibre installer (link below) for your operating system, and install as normal.  Calibre works on recent versions of Windows, OS X, and Linux.  The Calibre installer is very streamlined, so the install process was quite quick. Calibre is a great application for organizing your eBooks.  It can automatically sort your books by their metadata, and even display their covers in a Coverflow-style viewer. To add an eBook to your library, simply drag-and-drop the file into the Calibre window, or click Add books at the top.  Here you can choose to add all the books from a folder and more. Calibre will then add the book(s) to your library, import the associated metadata, and organize them in the catalog. Convert your Books Once you’ve imported your books into Calibre, it’s time to convert them to the format you want.  Select the book or books you want to convert, and click Convert E-books.  Select whether you want to convert them individually or bulk convert them. The convertor window has lots of options, so you can get your ePub book exactly like you want.  You can simply click Ok and go with the defaults, or you can tweak the settings. Do note that the conversion will only work successfully with PDFs that contain actual text.  Some PDFs are actually images scanned in from the original books; these will appear just like the PDF after the conversion, and won’t be any easier to read. On the first tab, you’ll notice that Calibri will repopulate most of the metadata fields with info from your PDF.  It will also use the first page of the PDF as the cover.  Edit any of the information that may be incorrect, and add any additional information you want associated with the book. If you want to convert your eBook to a different format other than ePub, Calibri’s got you covered, too.  On the top right, you can choose to output the converted eBook into a many different file formats, including the Kindle-friendly MOBI format. One other important settings page is the Structure Detection tab.  Here you can choose to have it remove headers and footers in the converted book, as well as automatically detect chapter breaks. Click Ok when you’ve finished choosing your settings and Calibre will convert the book.  This may take a few minutes, depending on the size of the PDF.  If the conversion seems to be taking too long, you can click Show job details for more information on the progress.   The conversion usually works good, but we did have one job freeze on us.  When we checked the job details, it indicated that the PDF was copy-protected.  Most PDF eBooks, however, worked fine. Now, back in the main Calibri window, select your book and save it to disk.  You can choose to save only the EPUB format, or you can select Save to disk to save all formats of the book to your computer. You can also view the ePub file directly in Calibri’s built-in eBook viewer.  This is the PDF book we converted, and it looks fairly good in the converted format.  It does have some odd line breaks and some misplaced numbers, but on the whole, the converted book is much easier to read, especially on small mobile devices.   Even images get included inline, so you shouldn’t be missing anything from the original eBook. Conclusion Calibri makes it simple to read your eBooks in any format you need. It is a project that is in constant development, and updates regularly adding better stability and features.  Whether you want to ready your PDF eBooks on a Sony Reader, Kindle, netbook or Smartphone, your books will now be more accessible than ever.  And with thousands of free PDF eBooks out there, you’ll be sure to always have something to read. • can't listen to tips on bill Jelen podcast disc

  Hi all, appreciate any suggestions you can offer. Am using windows 7-64 bit--have the bill Jelen disc with his podcasts on it. Can open the disc, select the podcast I want to listen to -it shows up on my screen but there seems to be no place to click to have the podcast acutally start running. Have used this disc before with xp and windows-not 64- and had no problem- would just click on the podcast and it would start to play. Would try on my other computer that it worked on but that computer is dead. Any ideas?? thanks

• User profile and desktop unclickable and unviewable from windows explorer

  Situation: Windows Vista, latest updates. After restarting to complete an installation, I find myself looking at a totally black windows desktop without any icons. The start menu and taskbar, including quickstart icons, appears. Some, but not all task bar tray icons appear. The systems seems stable. When I open Windows Explorer and click "desktop" in the folder treeview, the cursor immediately jumps back to the previously selected item. No error. Same when clicking on my user's profile or my documents. When I try "save as" in, say, Notepad, nothing happens, the dialog box (which defaults to "my documents") doesn't even show. Again, no error. Nothing serious afaict in the event log. Typing something Start Search shows "Search failed to initialize". Anybody ever encountered such abomination?

• moving dynamic disk from Windows to another Windows computer when original Windows is not available

  How do I mount dynamic disk on new system without access to the old OS ? I need to move Dynamic data disk from old Windows XP (Pro, SP3) system, where disk crashed, to new Windows system without having access to the old OS. On new system, Dynamic disk shows as "Dynamic - Foreign". Microfoft has instructions for moving Dynamic Disk [1]. But Microsoft assumes having access to the old system. But I do not have acess to the old system. I am struck with "Dynamic - Foreign" static of the disk on new system. • How does one get Vista to display .MOV thumbnails as a frame from the movie?

  I've discovered that Windows Vista explorer shell does not display proper "thumbnail"s for .MOV files. e.g. For .JPG files, the explorer shell, when in Thumbnail mode, displays a scaled down version of the image. But for .MOV files, it displays the same icon as in the non-thumbnail view, which is just some generic thing that shows you it's going to be played with Quicktime or whatever. What XP used to do was show you a frame from the actual movie as the thumbnail. I've looked on internet and found various proposed solutions, but none which actually work. Is there a simple step-by-step process for getting Vista to properly display thumbnails for .MOV files?

  I have three google users [personal, work, work] in my chrome on Mac OS X. The chrome for my personal account [not the other two chromes] has text-enhanced ads in every site i go to. It double-underlines some keywords on every page. On mouse hover I get an ad overlay from http[colon][slash][slash]intext.nav-links.com[slash] Upon right-clicking one of the text-enhanced keywords and going to 'inspect element', i see that the text has been wrapped around with a CSS classname called adtext. It even shows the .adtext CSS descriptions on the right. How do i determine from WHICH particular extension is this CSS classname being injected into my pages?

• Ubuntu 9.10 desktop installation via USB (boot)

  I have made a live boot USB using the UnetBootIn tool for Ubuntu 9.10. I have Windows XP SP2 installed as the primary OS, and I want to make a partition for Ubuntu. But when I try to boot it via USB, it just goes to boot menu of Ubuntu, then I enter the default type for installation. After that nothing happens, just the Ubuntu logo shows up and just that nothing happens after that. I can try the simpler task also i.e. install via CD but I want to know what's not working with this USB boot method. Thanks in advance.

• Access internal IP using public IP

  Hi, I have a DSL modem with a public IP address (201.206.x.x), and I have a web server in my internal network (192.168.0.50). I set up the modem to forward requests to port 80 to my web server, so, if I access 201.206.x.x from outside my network, it shows my web page, the same happens if I access 192.168.0.50 from a computer inside my network. Now, the problem is when I try to access 201.206.x.x from my internal network, the browser tries to connect to the DSL modem configuration, instead of redirecting my request to my Web server. Which settings do I have to change in the modem to set up this redirection? Thanks!

Search and download samples from the online Samples Gallery when the user has internet access. Browse the sample code files and learn the sample documentation of downloaded samples with or without internet access.   In addition to the "browse” function, the Sample Browser could further support “bookmark”, “learning notes”, “code review”, and “quick social sharing". Make full use of the new touch and Windows Store App UI to give developers a new “relaxing” code browsing and learning experience, anytime, anywhere. • Two questions about restoring Thunderbird from a backup

  Setting up a new Windows 7 PC, I'm puzzled by two things in Thunderbird 3.1.9: I restored a profile from a three-month old backup, no problem. I then copied more recent files into the Mail/ directory, but TBird still shows the old messages. The last message in Inbox is dated 3/16/2011 -- how do I get TBird to display all the messages in the Local Folders/Inbox view? A large number of the existing messages are now displayed in separate tabs -- I can't tell you how many, but there could be over 1000. Which file governs this? Or can I hire someone from Mechanical Turk to come over and manually close each tab?

• Ubuntu Desktop shifted to right

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) Kernel : 3.5.0-18-generic I am encountering a strange problem, my whole desktop has shifted to right. This happened after I restored my system, I was getting a blank screen earlier.(something is better than nothing). For some reason it also shows my display as laptop. Running xrandr xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 0.0* 800x600 0.0 640x480 0.0 Running lspci lspci -nn | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0102] (rev 09) My Display on window supports maximum of 1366*768. I do not want to reinstall everything please help. It is cycled around as mentioned by Eliah Kagan For correcting my blank screen issue I edited my grub file I edited this line and added nomodeset, without it screen gets all grained up.   We're trying to setup an SSL server in front of a Weblogic server using Apache as the SSL provider. Anyone can point out where did we go wrong? Thanks.
