• How do I restore logging in with an X session graphics instaed of text-only session?

  I was able to set up a text UI by editing the file /etc/default/grub in Ubuntu 12.04 as per the instructions in: How do I disable X at boot time so that the system boots in text mode? But, how do I revert to X-session as the default one? I don't want to log into text mode and 'start' the lightdm every time. So I tried replacing back the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash", and did update-grub too, but something unexpected happened, an unbootable system! How do I fix this?

• Xubuntu and other Debian based distros slow

  I have a Compaq Presario SR1950NX desktop computer with the AMD64 3800+ processor and 1GB ram and it seems that Ubunutu, Xubuntu and Lubuntu are all laggy. Things seem to be slow such as clicking on menus and opening programs and the UI renders in peices. When using the browser the system slows down considerably. I ran the TOP command and I do notice that xorg hits 30 to 40 percent cpu when running the browsers. I have tried these distros on a spare P4 machine and it is even worse. As long as I don't have a several things open at one time I can manage to get around although sluggishly. I also notice that I can't get debian based distros to install in 64bit (crtc6 failure) only in 32bit. Can anyone tell me what is it that I might be doing wrong? I have an integrated Nvidia card and have tried several of the recommended drivers which sometimes result in no boot screen upon reboot. Thanks

• Problem with DualBooting Ubuntu 13.10 and Win7

  this is my first post here on AskUbuntu, not first time using it though. I wanted to install Ubuntu 13.10 on my PC to have all my work stuff there and leave Win7 for gaming. So i did my research on how to Dual Boot when you already have Win7 installed, here are the steps i took Used Disk Management on Win7 and shrunk that partition, leaving 80GB free for Ubuntu. Made a Bootable pendrive following the instructions on Ubuntu`s website. During the installation steps there was supposed to be a Install alongside Win7, but there wasnt, so i chose Something else. Everything was fine and i was able to install Ubuntu no problem on my unallocated 80GB partition (76GB Ubuntu + 4GB swap) There was a prompt for me to restart my PC and so I did expecting to see the dual boot screen (grub right?) Now, when i restarted my PC, Grub never showed up and it booted straight to Windows. Then I did some more research and found out that that could happen. Tried three things then Plugging in bootable pendrive again and selected Try Ubuntu without installing. Then i followed some instructions found here (How can I repair grub? (How to get Ubuntu back after installing Windows?)) and i could chroot into my Ubuntu install just fine. Repaired grub as instructed on that link, restarted the PC and booted straight into Win7 again. Again, used the bootable pen drive to Try Ubuntu... and used the Boot-repair tool (recommended repair). Again, booted straight into Win7. Lastly, i installed easyBCD on my Win7 and made a new entry for Ubuntu (Linux/BSD). When i rebooted the PC, there was the option to choose between Win7 and Linux, chose linux and it didnt work, taking me straight to a command line-like enviroment that read Minimum bash like scripting or something, as if I didn`t have a Linux OS installed. So, I thought I`d try and repair my Ubuntu install. And during the Installation method step there was the choice to install alongside Ubuntu 13.10! and that right there drove me crazy. Here is a screenshot of gparted showing how things are set up now http://imageshack.us/f/801/77u3.png/ Notice on the left-hand side how i can access my installation files just fine. sdb1- win7 reserved space, sdb2- win7 OS, sdb3- 76GB ubuntu install, sdb5- 4GB swap area. • UndoRedo on Nodes (Part 2)

  After the recording of the latest API Design Tip for the upcoming NetBeans Podcast, Jaroslav Tulach helped me with the problem I blogged about yesterday. First he expressed surprise at seeing Undo/Redo work on Nodes, which was never the intention, i.e., that feature was always intended for documents, e.g., the Java editor. However, he then showed me where to find the Properties window in the NetBeans sources, where it is org.netbeans.core.windows.view.ui.NbSheet. It turns out that the Properties window does not have an activated node and hence the Node that implements UndoRedo.Manager is never put in the Lookup. Once we added, on line 303, "this.setActivatedNodes(nodes);", everything worked as expected, i.e., the Undo/Redo actions are now enabled, even when the Properties window is selected: Maybe it means I should file an issue to get that line added to NbSheet?

  I got stocked passing parameter to one master page for some reasons, seems the page lifecycle and dynamic loading of the master pages has got some issues with defining public properties in the masterpage within my project. It did not set my values and as a result, properties became useless. A collegue just mentioned using HttpContext. have a look what  MSDN saying "Encapsulates all HTTP-specific information about an individual HTTP request" http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.httpcontext.aspx HttpContext.Current.Items["ParameterName"] Also, Page.Items could do the same thing. Page.Items, "Gets a list of objects stored in the page context" http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.page.items.aspx as your master page and content page are rendered as a single document anyway.

  As a Java developer, I am developing trying to use the clean code rules. But in my team we are facing a concrete problem: We have a business layer offering a service called "createObject", this service makes a lot of operation which can result to problem. E.g: parentObjectDontExist, objectAlreadyExist, dontHaveAuthorizationToCreate, operationFailed... and we want the UI using this service to display different information messages depending which error occurred. In old java dev, we should have create all signed exception type and throw it in createObject. As Clean code says, it is forbidden to use Exception for business logic AND signed exceptions are evil... Why not...But i don't know how to solved this problem and i don't want to use return code. But Common in referenced from domain (for some reflection utilities and for DI if the response to 1. is yes) and circular reference isn't good

• reading parameters and files on browser, looking how to execute on server

  I have a site done in Rails, which uses javascript to load files and generate forms for the user to input certain information. Those files and parameters are then to be used in a fortran code on the server. When the UI was on the server (using Qt), I would create a parameters file and execute the fortran code using threads so I wouldn't block the computer. Now that is web-based, I need to make the server and browser talk. What's the procedure for that? where should I start looking? I'm already using rails + javascript. I need that extra tool to do the talking, and no idea where to start.

• Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome 3 shell doesn't have the Activities menu or launcher

  I installed it from apt-get and it only has Applications and Places instead of the Activities menu, it also doesn't have the dock or launcher. Using the super key does nothing, as neither does mousing to the upper left corner. I have also installed the tweak tool, but it looks like all the settings are not being applied to the UI. Am I missing something. I have never used Gnome 3 before as I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 10.4, which I believe was Gnome 2 for the shell. I have been reading the documentation on the Gnome site and it says there should be an Activity menu and other items that aren't there. Thanks

The UI should ensure the option to close a started ProjectTask is never available, but some safeguards are present in the domain: public class Task { public Status Status { get; set; } public virtual void Close() { Status = Status.Closed; } } public ProjectTask : Task { public override void Close() { if (Status == Status.Started) throw new Exception("Cannot close a started Project Task"); base.Close(); } } Now when calling Close() on a Task, there is a chance the call will fail if it is a ProjectTask with the started status, when it wouldn't if it was a base Task. But this is the business requirements. It should fail. Can this be regarded as a violation?

• Ctrl+Alt+T doesn't open Terminal (Compiz related?)

  Ctrl+Alt+T doesn't open the Terminal, and I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with Compiz. Compiz disabled the transparency on my launcher (using Ub.12.04LTS+Unity) and so I uninstalled it. But after I uninstalled Compiz, my UI was messed up, so I reinstalled it, now Ctrl+Alt+T doesn't open the terminal. System Settings Keyboard Shortcuts has the shortcut to terminal there, but it simply does not work. Any tips on what I could do? Thanks in advance!

• Are there any conceptual drawbacks to building a web app with C++ and MySQL?

  I've inherited a pretty interesting project where there is a good opportunity to take an existing piece of software and turn it into a SaaS web app. As the project is inherited, the code base/ framework is already defined as C++ and MySQL. The app itself is compiled and run as an EXE on Windows Server. The UI is web based and the app works as a kind of server. From what I do know of modern web apps, this is perhaps an unusual choice. These days, most people seem to opt for a PHP framework or Ruby on Rails. Certainly that is the impression I get from reading blogs on the subject. So, I'm very interested to know if a C++ EXE backed by MySQL is a solid foundation for a web app, or whether we should be looking to build in another way?

I naively thought this could somehow be done with something that looks like GetHTMLDataAsync(url).ContinueWith(HtmlReadComplete); But, I can't get the syntax correct, nor am I even sure that's the appropriate way to handle it.
