• User interface for addition/deletion of items to a list?

  I have a ban list that I'm building as part of an application that displays articles. This ban list will contain keywords, which if found in an article, would lead to the article disabled(the article will not be displayed on the front-end) I'm having a tough time visualizing the UI. I could always display a textarea and ask the user to enter keywords comma separated and when they want to delete again the textarea will be presented and they can edit the entered keywords. But I find my idea very unfriendly to the user. My question is how do I program the UI so that its easy to add new keywords. I also would like to be adviced on a nifty way showing the existing keywords and also deleting them. This ban list will be part of the admin panel/backend and will be accessible only to the site administrator.

  In Rails, blocks can be used as callbacks, e.g.: class User < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :login, :email before_create {|user| user.name = user.login.capitalize if user.name.blank?} end When a block is used like this, is there any use for break and return? I'm asking because normally in a block, break will break out of the loop, and return will return from the enclosing method. But in a callback context, I can't get my head round what that means. The Ruby Programming Language suggests that return could cause a LocalJumpError but I haven't been able to reproduce this in a Rails callback. Edit: with the following code I'd expect a LocalJumpError, but all the return does is stop the rest of the callback executing. class User < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :login, :email before_create do |user| return user.name = user.login.capitalize end

  I'm working on a ruby baser lexer. To improve performance, I joined up all tokens' regexps into one big regexp with match group names. I could not find any option other than iterating over #names: m.names.each do |n| if m[n] type = n.to_sym resolved_type = (n.start_with?('__anonymous_') ? nil : type) val = m[n] break end end which verifies that the match group did have a match. The problem here is that it's slow (I spend about 10% of time in the loop; also 8% grabbing the @input[@pos..-1] to make sure that \A works as expected to match start of string (I do not discard input, just shift the @pos in it). You can check the full code at GH repo. Any ideas on how to make it at least a bit faster? Is there any option to figure the "successful" match group easier?

  I'm building a social networking type site that will be storing large chunks of text that's entered by users, such as blog entries and private messages. As such, these will be entered once, with minimal revisions, but many reads by multiple users over time. I'm using MySQL, by the way. My concerns are: Storing large blocks of text on the database will fill the database to capacity eventually. I read somewhere that storing user text in flat files is a security risk? (The filenames will be generated dynamically by the PHP, not by the user.) Storing them as text files may cause them to become out of sync if I ever have to reinitialize the database and restore it from backups. What are all your thoughts and advice, pros and cons?

  I have an anonymous function to detect the user has scrolled to the bottom of the window. Inside of the anonymous function, I have a call to a database that takes a while to complete. var allowing_more = 1; $(window).scroll(function() { if (allowing_more == 1){ if ($(window).scrollTop() + $(window).height() == $(document).height()) { allowing_more = 0; //query allowing_more = 1; } } }); In this time, if the user scrolls to the bottom of the window again, it seems a queue is made holding the occurences the user scrolled to the bottom of the window while the query was loading. Upon completing of the query, these occurences are then executed. I have a boolean statement to detect if the anonymous function is accepting more query requests but this seems to be ignored. Is there some sort of way to ignore an anonymous function temporarily and re-enable it?

  I know how to get the entire contacts list using Google Contacts API (I get a session token and use Google's Zend package for PHP). But how can I get the person's name and email address? Currently, the Contacts API just seems to give all of the contacts. I'm not sure how to distinguish which email and name out of that list corresponds to the user's account.   Hey everyone, I'm trying to write an app that consists of an activity that manages a background service. However, I want to implement a user setting for automatically starting the service up at boot time. I have user settings implemented with SharedPreferences and I have the services starting up at boot by using a BroadcastReceiver and listening for BOOT_COMPLETED. However, I can't figure out a good way to implement a setting so that the service is only started at boot if said setting is enabled. I can think of a few cheap ways to do this (such as messing with onCreate() in the service, or creating/checking for a file on SD card) but I want to follow good practice. There must be a good way to do this because there's tons of apps out there that do it, I just can't find anything online about how to do it. Thanks

  I'm using Matlab to create a small chess game for one of my courses this semester. The thing I'm having trouble with is having the user be able to select one of the chess pieces. To simplify things, I'm making it so that the user selects a piece by clicking on the square that the chess piece resides on rather than clicking the piece itself (which I assume would be much more difficult). I know how to get the x and y coordinates of the view-port, but how do I transform these coordinates into 3-space coordinates? I know that there are multiple x,y,z coordinates associated with each view-port coordinate, but I'm only interested in the x,y,z coordinate where z = 0 (since the board itself is in the x,y plane that intersects the z axis where z = 0). If I run the script directly on shell prompt using root user then WINE starts XServer properly and execute MS MSoffice in addition to that if I set xhost +local:apache on shell prompt then also it works fine.   Hi, I'm not too familiar with javascript, is there a way to manipulate the DOM before the page is displayed to the user? I'm using GWT which makes you create the page elements via javascript. This is kind of convenient, but it appears that all the javascript code is executed after the page is first shown to the user. This has the effect of showing the page as a blank white screen, then all the UI elements popping onto screen. The effect is really apparent when switching between pages. If I were using php or jsp, it looks like the page ui elements are already prerendered and the browser won't show a blank white screen before display. So is there any hook in javascript where we can manipulate the DOM before the browser clears out the contents of the last page shown? Thanks

• Change the Way Google Search Results Display in Firefox

  Are you tired of the default look for search results at Google? If you want a different and customized pleasing look for them, then join us as we look at the GoogleMonkeyR User Script. Note: User Style Scripts & User Scripts can be added to most browsers but we are using Firefox & the Greasemonkey extension for our example here. Before Here is the standard look for search results at Google…not bad but it really does not stand out that well either. Installing the User Script You may be asking yourself what makes this particular user script different from others. Take a look at the list of goodies that you get access to and you will understand: Multiple columns of results Removes “Sponsored Links” Add numbers to the results Auto-load more results Removes web search dialogues Open links in a new tab Favicons GooglePreview Self updating Can be configured from a simple user dialogue To get started click on the Webpage Install Button. Once you click on the Webpage Install Button you will see the following window asking for confirmation to add the user script to Firefox. Click Install to complete the process. GoogleMonkeyR in Action Refreshing the same search page shown above shows a noticeable difference already. The light blue background makes the search results stand out a bit better. This is an improvement from before but you will definitely want to have a look to see just how far you can go… Right click on the Greasemonkey Status Bar Icon, go to User Script Commands, and select GoogleMonkeyR Preferences. Once you have clicked on GoogleMonkeyR Preferences the search page will be shaded out and you will have access to the user script’s preferences. This is where you can really make your search results unique looking! Here are the changes that we started out with… After refreshing our search results things looked even better. A look at the entire page of results with our browser maximized and set for two columns.
