• How can I reconfigure the nvidia proprietary drivers from the command line (ssh)?

  I have a linux HTPC (running XBMC) in my living room. This morning I ssh'ed into the machine and did upgrade it to 10.10. When it finaly resarted it says something about running in low quality graphics and eventually returned to a command line login prompt. I ssh'ed in again and did a sudo reboot now. When it came back on this time the image is rapidly scrolling from the top to the bottom of the screen. I guess the installed driver doesn't quite work with the S-Video port on which the TV is connected. previously it was working right with the nvidia proprietary drivers. How can I install thoses without using the GUI tool that comes with Ubuntu?

• What should a game have in order to keep humans playing it?

  In many entertainment professions there suggestions, loose rules, or general frameworks one follows that appeal to humans in one way or another. For instance, many movies and books follow the monomyth. In video games I find many types of games that attract people in different ways. Some are addicted to facebook gem matching games. Others can't get enough of FPS games. Once in awhile, though, you find a game that seems to transcend stereotypes and appeals almost immediately to everyone that plays it. For instance, Plants Versus Zombies seems to have a very, very large demographic of players. There are other games similar in reach. I'm curious what books, blogs, etc there are that explore these game types and styles, and tries to suss out one or more popular frameworks/styles that satisfy people, while keeping them coming back for more.

• 2D Game Dev Resources/Tutorials for Windows (Phone) 8 Development?

  I am really exited about the launch of windows 8, windows phone 8 so I decided to start learning how to develop games for them. I was even more exited when I found out that html, css, javascript can be used to develop apps for these platforms. I'm familiar with some standard html, css3 that i used to develop some websites, but I only know some VERY basics of javascript. I know things like HTML5 canvas and image sprites can be used to develop games, but I haven't found any tutorials that I understood good enough ;/ So I am asking you now. Can you suggest any good tutorials/resources (preferably video) that start from beginners level and go to advanced into game development with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. It would be really good if such tutorials concentrated on game development for mobile phones (e.g. detecting when user touches the screen, using optimised images for hi res and standard displays, adopting to screen size etc) Oh.. and I forgot to mention that I am only interested in 2d game development.

  Hi! I have very a simple question. How to recover a .ogv file on my /home ext4 partition? I overwrote the .ogv file (I confused input and output in Arista transcoder). I did research. TestDisk can undelete files on FAT and NTFS, but not on EXT4. PhotoRec does not support .ogv recovering.   Most tutorials for generating glitch art usually has to do with some form of manipulation of the compression of files. Should my goal instead to replicate the look of these glitches in shaders or is it somehow possible to authentically generate the compression artifacts in real time? Example: This effect which I'm particularly interested is referred to as datamoshing. It does "things" using the p-frames of a video (frames that I think store just the change in pixels). I feel like I need a better understanding of both graphics programming and data-compression.

• Microsoft LifeCam Audio Issue

  Running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit on a computer with an Intel core i5 processor, 4GB RAM and a NVIDIA 450GTS Graphics card. I am trying to set up Skype with my webcam. So far everything works almost perfectly, however my Microsoft LifeCam-VX700 v2.0 audio does not work correctly. The audio feed is just static/white noise. I have checked the hardware using windows and it worked perfectly there. The video works great in Ubuntu. It is just the audio that is the problem. What can I do to rectify this problem?

• Dual monitor, with a low resolution projector

  I need to show a presentaion to a conference tomorrow. Today I tryed my Ubuntu 10.04 with the projector. My notebook has a resolution of 1440x960, the projector seems to have a really lower resolution. However, thanks to nvidia-settings I configured my video card (a nvidia 9800), it works with other display, but not with the projector. I found the projector, configured as Twin-view, resolution Auto and pressed on Apply, then "Save to x Configuration". On projector is visualized just a quarter of my notebook display. I tryed also to reduce my resolution and to change the resolution of projector, but I obtained no better results. How can I Solve it? On windows all goes well, but I need Ubuntu for personal reasons.   Use Case: Photos are organised in a folder structure by date (by software lightroom/picasa) Want to run a local webserver to host a web gallery from (already know how to run lamp etc) I want to be able to attach metadata to the photos (probably through a database not residing in the photos folder) such that they can be tagged/categoried/albumed without affecting the original photos I want to be able to assign permissions to different albums to set users I want the software to watch the photo source folder for changes so that new photos are indexed ready for applying metadata and albums. I'd like the software to handle the rendering of numerous file types (photo formats) as well as video formatts I am language agnostic so php/python heck even c#, just want software that forfills the requirements. The main reason I am asking this question here as I am unsure what this software would even be called so google searching is quite difficult! Thanks for reading.

  Is there a good note taking application in ubuntu like Evernote exists for windows and Mac users. Requirements for good applications:- A thumbnail/list preview for all the created notes. An integration with the email address so that we can view the notes anywhere anytime. Any easy way to input text, video, pdf, images etc. I have tried tomboy, basket notes. They aren't that good.   According to my research, the best solution to use ubuntu server as a DVR system would be ZoneMinder. is there any alternatives to zoneminder out there? I'm not really happy it only has a web interface to control/view my cameras. And it doesn't have an option to record video stream non-stop. Am I missing something in its configuration? And the thing I really disappointed, I cant find a way to control my PTZ camera with it. what do manufacturers sell along with their standalone linux powered dvr systems?

  I used Intrepid(8.10) and my graphics used to work fine with compiz effects and all(on better resolution than 1024x768).Now I have upgraded to Precise(12.04)but I use gnome classic(with compiz effects)as my desktop but the compiz effects seem not to work, only unity 2D works. • How to include high resolution version of thumbnail

  I'm running a tube site that has a thumbnail for each post/video (running via Wordpress, 500k posts). When I first created the thumbnails they were a fairly large size, around 640px in width each and because of that I was seeing a lot of traffic from Google Images. After streamlining the site and resizing all of the thumbnails down to 170px rather than scaling them down I'm worried that Google isn't going to rank the images as high as they would be at a larger resolution, so is there a way to include the higher res versions and serve them to be indexed instead of the smaller ones?

  i use a lenovo y560 and has ubunto 12.04 and win 7 installed when i boot into ubunto i find that the ati car is always on which drains the battery and overheats the system is there any to switch off the ati graphics and use intel hd in ubuntu ati hd 5730 is the graphics card that i use and it has switchable graphics in it. in bios the only two options for video adapter is discrete and switchable after installing ati driver from amd website i am getting a commamd prompt as log in screen first error message comes as Your system is running in low-graphics mode with options to run in low graphics mode this time reconfigure exit all three options i am stuck i need to manually reboot the system

• Is it a good idea to use a formula to balance a game's complexity, in order to keep players in constant flow?

  I read a lot about Flow theory and its applications to video games, and I got an idea sticking in my mind. If a number of weight values are applied to different parameters of a certain game level (i.e. the size of the level, the number of enemies, their overal strength, the variance in their behavior, etc), then it should be technically possible to find an overal score mechanism for each level in the game. If a constant ratio of complexity increase were empirically defined, for instance 1,3333, or say, the Golden Ratio, would it be a good idea to arrange the levels in such an order that the increase of overal complexity tends to increase that much? Has somebody tried it?

All I know is that, sometimes, I'll load a video (from youtube or from a local file) and there will be no sound. • Can I animate render targets or the swap chain?

  I want to animate some synthetic video bits to fullscreen w/o tearing. Can I set up D3D 9/10/11 in exclusive mode, and have it present a series of buffers that I'm writing to? I know how to copy system memory bits into a texture, then draw that texture as a fullscreen quad, but it seems like overkill. Why should I use the triangle rasterizer when I want to do something so simple? All I want to do is set up a long (4-8 buffer) swapchain and set the bits of the back buffer that is about to be displayed. Or, I want to allocate 4-8 RenderTargets, and on each frame, copy the bits from system memory to the RenderTarget, then set it as the next thing to display. I've never seen or heard about anybody doing this, but it seems so dead simple!
