  • Audit Windows Server/Desktop Product Key usage

    The company I work for has a fairly big domain of Windows Desktops and Servers. We also have standalone servers that are remote to our site but we have direct access to. We need to audit our license usage across all Windows machines (including some VMs). I have tried a few products downloaded, but the key returned is not the one used during installation. I have one product that gives the last 5 characters correctly but needs to be installed so its not really suitable. I also have tried some PowerShell scripts one of which is here Ideally I am looking for one that can be used over a network and if possible can audit Office keys too. I've just tried Jelly Bean and some other product key tools that all return BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBB-BBBBB as the product key.

  • "Access Denied" error when starting Windows Security Center service

    I am working on a laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit) which had previous issues with Microsoft Security Essentials. I've removed the previous installation of Security Essentials and reinstalled it. There's no problem with the said antivirus now, but after a couple of days it was brought back to me because of the error about Windows Security Center service not being started. I've tried setting it to start Automatically instead of "Delayed Start", but I still keep getting "Error 5: Access is Denied." I've searched other possible solutions but it's mostly been either what I did already or "Don't worry about it." Any ideas? Thanks in advance! EDIT: I've scanned the system with both Malwarebytes AM and SUPERAntiSpyware and have found no traces of anything. EDIT2: I have also tried running sfc /scannow to see if the files might be damaged. Got the message no integrity violations were found, however.

  • Wrong PC-projector resolution in Windows 7

    I'm connecting a PC-projector (Benq MP721) to a Windows 7 Professional laptop (HP 6730b). All the output settings on the laptop, including the laptop screen, changes to 1024x768 (which the projector supports). However the projector says it receives 1360x768 and asks me to change the resolution to 1024x768. I'm using mirrored display. The laptop is 1024x768 The screen resolution in the control panel says 1024x768 The Intel graphics card utilities says 1024x768 The driver for the projector is a Generic PnP Monitor Is there anything in Windows 7 that would convert my 4:3 resolution to wide screen automatically?

  • Windows Server 2012 Metro shortcut icons do not show for other users

    I have installed SQL Server 2012 and SharePoint 2013 on my Windows Server 2012 machine using a dedicated domain install account. When I log into the same machine with a user account, all the icons for these applications are missing! I can still access the applications by finding them in 'Program Files', however it is very annoying. (For example, I'm not exactly sure where the SharePoint PowerShell is located, and frankly I don't want to know either) In previous versions of Windows Server, the Icons always showed up in the Start Menu. Does anyone know how I can copy the shortcuts in one account to another?

  • Windows 7 x64 Pro not indexing PDF content ?

    In an attemp to get rid of all the paper clutter that I receive each day, I started scanning and ORCing all my important documents last year. I was using Windows Desktop Search on Vista to index my "Administrative" folder in which I keep all these scanned documents, to be able to quickly retreive them when needed. I upgraded to Windows 7 RTM recently (I got the x64 Pro version, via the MSDN-AA channel of my university). Since then, it seems that the content of the PDFs is not indexed anymore. For example, I have the warranty for my GTX260 graphic card. In the PDF, using Acrobat Reader, I can search for the string "GTX260" and it finds the relevant lines. However, if I perform the same search in the folder containing the PDF, nothing is found. I checked in the indexing options, the folder is supposed to be indexed.

  • Screenshot before windows starts: without another computer?

    I'm pretty sure that this must have been asked before, but haven't found a duplicate question, thus I shall ask again... Is it possible to take a screenshot of my computer before the OS boots up WITHOUT an external computer or virtualization software like VMWare?? e.g. at the BIOS, or the "Windows is Loading" screen, even at the login screen? Is it possible to take screenshots of BSODs as well? EDIT: I'm using a desktop pc running Windows 7 Ultimate in a home environment. Thanks.

  • Windows 2003 shutdown instead of reboot

    Hi all, I've got a very strange problem. On the net I can only find problems with Server 2003 pc's, that reboot instead of shutting down, but in my case... (go figure) it does the opposite. When I choose to reboot, the system shutdown. Yes I am sure I used the reboot button. It happens via start == reboot and it happens when clicking on the reboot button when the update's have been installed. Nothing changed to the system's hardware. Only update's have been installed on the system. I did notice something odd in the logs when rebooting: Description: Timed out sending notification of target device change to window of "C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE" KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924390 They talk about a removable drive, but in my case, it's explorer.exe :s it appears 4 times.   • Windows 7 offline files - work temporarily offline even if network connection works

    Sometimes I am connected via VPN to a network containing the server where files are stored which are cached by Windows offline files feature. Sometimes the connection works good and working this way is not a problem - on other times working is quite a pain because of high latency when working with the files in the Windows explorer. Is there an interactive way how a user (with admin permissions) can temporary suspend online usage of offline files? I already activated the "Transparent caching" group policy feature (Computer Configuration Policies Administrative Templates Networks Offline Files) with a network latency of 200msec but from my experience even if I get ping times to the file server of less than 40msec online usage is quite tenacious. Setting low latency times at this point causes the offline files often to toggle which makes problems with some applications working with several files and requires them to be consistent (like SVN client).

  • Rewrite request URI based on Host header in HAProxy

    I would like to set up HAProxy to forward HTTP requests to some backend servers but I need it to also rewrite the URI part based on the Host. I've read through the doc but it seems that reqirep isn't suitable for this purpose. Any idea if this is even possible with HAProxy? Here are the details of what I'm trying to accomplish: Requests that come in on: http://www.original-domain.com/ would be balanced between: http://server1/domains/www.original-domain.com/ ... http://serverN/domains/www.original-domain.com/ The proxy should be able to handle this for any number of domains (original-domain.com can be anything, it's not limited to a fixed set of values). For this to work HAProxy would need to rewrite a request like this: GET /original-uri HTTP/1.1 Host: original-domain.com to: GET /domains/original-domain.com/original-uri HTTP/1.1 Host: serverN and forward that request to one of the internal servers.

  • New IE windows open in background on restricted computer

    We have a new computer build that is locked down via GPO. We have locked it down as tight as we can, but now new IE windows that are opened with shortcuts open behind the active window. I can post the whole list of restrictions if it is necessary, but there are a lot of restrictions. The machine has a domain account that automatically logs in, that account is the actual AD object that we have locked down. What restrictions could cause the new windows to not have focus? I apologize for a question like this, but I had 1 day to build this, and now 2 days to iron out bugs our clinical analysts find.

  • Capslock turns on intermittenly on Windows Login Screen

    At first I thought it was a coworker playing a joke on me.. I have a habit of locking my workstation whenever I leave my desk. however i have noticed over the last several years that sometimes the capslock key would be on when I return. I don't notice this until i try typing in my password (which would fail because its in ALL CAPS) and then glance at the now illuminated caps lock key. This has happened on and off across half a dozen workstations on 2000, XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Possible causes I'm losing my mind "feature" in windows? some sort of institutional domain policy at my workplace someone has been messing with me for many many years ?

  • Problem with the hosts file in Windows XP

    I have a computer with Windows XP SP2 with a weird problem. The hosts file doesn't work. No matter what I do, adding or removing entries in the file doesn't make any difference, pinging the added names times out. I tried flushing the DNS cache (using ipconfig /flushdns) but that didn't work, I even tried to restart the DNS client service but that made no difference too. Removing entries also has no effect, I ping the names and I get a reply. Help!!! Edit: Thanks for your answer guys, but the problem is more complicated than this. It seems I'll have to reinstall Windows.

    Does anyone know a website that hosts javascripts on their page? I have a research project that needs to collect some RTT from all over the world and compare them together. I have written the javascript code for that but I do not have a high hit rate website to put it on to collect data. I know it is a little bit odd question to ask, but do you know any website or any trick that can help me? Note that the script would not do any harm to anybody! :-) Thanks, Decad is right, I basically need some people to put my script on their "high-hit rate" website ... so I can collect data from large number of clients... Of coarse, the script is run on the background with no harm to the page. It basically measures some RTT and submit it to a server. I already have some pages, but they barely got a hit from outside!   • Set up development site on another server/host

    I'm developing a site for a client. They've got a site now that's hosted at hosting.com. I'm going to move them to my VM hosting solution at edge web but I want to run some tests and have the client approve the site before changing the name servers to the new site/hosting location. How do I make this happen? I'm running a red hat/Apache on linux for the edge web hosting. I don't have control of the domain name (i.e. the client controls that right now). Edgeweb has set up a dns zone for the domain name so that when the time comes to switch we're ready to go. I'm a web developer and I understand the technologies that make a user experience 'work' but I'm unfamiliar with the server jargon and all that so, please be patient. Thanks in advance.

  • SQL Server PowerShell Provider follows the Version of PowerShell on the Host and other errata

    There may be some misunderstanding on how the PowerShell Provider for SQL Server works. I’ve written an article or two explaining that you can use PowerShell with SQL Server, without having the SQL Server 2008 (or higher) provider around. After all, PowerShell just uses .NET, and SQL Server “Server Management Objects” or SMO listen to that interface as well. In SQL Server 2008 and higher we created a “MiniShell” for PowerShell that gives you the ability to treat a SQL Server Instance as a drive (called a “Provider” or path or drive) and a few commands (called command-lets). Using these two simple constructs you can move around SQL Server quickly and work with the objects it holds. I read the other day where someone stated that we had “re-compiled” PowerShell, so that you would have version 1.0 from SQL Server and 2.0 on your new server. Not so! Drop to a SQLPS prompt and a PowerShell prompt and type this in each: $PSVersionTable They should return the same value. You can think of a MiniShell as simply a compiled “profile” that gives you those providers and command-lets automatically – that’s all. In fact, you can load the SMO libraries yourself without the SQL Server 2008 Provider anywhere in sight. I do this all the time, since the MiniShell also has other restrictions. Also remember that if you run a PowerShell script as a SQL Agent Job step type (in 2008 and higher) that you’re running under the context of the account that starts Agent – I think most folks know this, but it’s good to keep in mind. There’s a re-written section of Books Online that goes over working with this very nicely – also covers the question “How to I connect to another server using the SQL Server PowerShell Provider” (hint: It’s just CD) and “How do I load all the SMO stuff if I don’t want to use the Provider” and more. Be sure and check out the note at the bottom that explains the firewall exceptions you’ll need to enable to CD to that remote server.   • enable PHP on windows Apache server

    Hi, I need to run a PHP app on a windows apache server. I've installed Apache, unzipped the app into the htdocs folder, but when I type this URL into the browser http://localhost:8080/pixelpost/admin/install.php I get the content of the PHP file, rather than the output it should generate. What are the steps for enabling PHP support in Apache on windows? I guess I need to install mod_php, and possibly do some other stuff, but my Apache and PHP knowledge is minimal, so idiot-proof instructions would be much appreciated. Thanks, Don
