  Sorry for my bad English and for maybe stupid question but I'm new in Java. I need use same string in 2 java files for example: In first java file I've got code for sending emails, I've got string set to default email: public String mail = new String ("[email protected]"); and I use this string in code for send email: email.addTo(mail); In second java file something like set up where can user set new email address I want to have same string, connected with string in first java file. When user put new email String mail will be change to new email address and in email.addTo(mail); will be use this new address How can I do this?

• Inheriting from List<T> in .NET (vb or C#)

  I have been delved in C++ world for a while, but now I'm in .NET world again, VB and C# and I wondered if you have a class that represents a collection of something, and you want the ability to use this in a foreach loop, etc... is it better to implement IEnumerable and IEnumerator yourself or should you inherit from the List<T> where T is the object type in it's singular form? I know in C++ for example, inheriting from a container is considered a bad idea. But what about .NET.

  I was speaking to an experienced lecturer recently who told me he could usually tell which programming language a student had learnt to program in by looking at their coding style (more specifically, when programming in other languages to the one which they were most comfortable with). He said that there have been multiple times when he's witnessed students attempted to write C# in Prolog. So I began to wonder, what specific traits do people gain from their first (or favourite) language which are carried over into their overall programming style, and more interestingly what good or bad habits do you think people would benefit from or should be wary of when learning specific language?

• Use from value from backing bean in javascript

  What I want is to use a boolean value from applicationContext.xml (Jboss configuration file) in my javascript. Currently I use Spring to inject a value configured in applicationContext.xml into my backingbean. Then I put an output text in my jsp like this <h:outputText id="idValue" styleClass="foo" value="" rendered="#{bean.isRendered}"/> In my JavaScript I try following jQuery(function(){ bRedirect = jQuery("#foo").value != undefined; ... All this looks so terrible to me, even though it works fine. There must be a smarter way than doing what I do. Note that I am running JSF1.2 and therefore must use jQuery instead of $ and also select by unique class (foo) and not by id, which may be bad practice as well. Thank you in advance. alfons

  A while ago, when I was learning Javascript, I studied Javascript: the good parts, and I particularly enjoyed the chapters on the bad and the ugly parts. Of course, I did not agree with everything, as summing up the design defects of a programming language is to a certain extent subjective - although, for instance, I guess everyone would agree that the keyword with was a mistake in Javascript. Nevertheless, I find it useful to read such reviews: even if one does not agree, there is a lot to learn. Is there a blog entry or some book describing design mistakes for Python? For instance I guess some people would count the lack of tail call optimization a mistake; there may be other issues (or non-issues) which are worth learning about.

  hi, My friend and I want to write a Facebook application. We've narrowed down the list of possible technologies to Ruby on Rails and C# with ASP. Here are the pros and cons we've thought of. Cons: ASP - proprietary tools like Visual Studio etc. cost (lots of) money. We both don't know ASP (although we're not bad at C#). RoR - It's scripting so might be harder to maintain. My friend doesn't know RoR at all (but he's a fairly proficient programmer so will probably be able to pick it up quickly). Pros: ASP - Facebook has an official SDK for .NET. RoR - I know RoR. It's open source, free and has fast development time. What says the community? Is there something we haven't thought of?

  I trying to create a points calculating system with javascript, but the problem is with the mathematical part. I have saved on the server the points number, and based on that number I want to decide the level. Sorry for my bad english, I cant explain very well :D. I want something like: level 1 need 0 points level 2 needs 100 points level 3 needs 240 points level 4 needs 420 points level 5 needs 640 points and so on.... I need a mathematical function to calculate each level with it. Something that if I know the level to calculate the points needed, and if I know only the points to calculate the level.

• Why won't gcc compile a class declaration as a reference argument?

  This compiles fine in Visual studio, but why not in XCode? class A() {}; someMethod(A& a); someMethod(A()); //error: no matching function call in XCode only :( Is this bad form? it seems annoying to have to write the following every time: A a(); someMethod(a); //successful compile on Xcode Am i missing something? I have method A: MyClass monkey; ... if(monkey != null) { ... } Or method B: boolean hasMonkey; //This is set to TRUE when monkey is not null MyClass monkey; ... if(hasMonkey) { ... } On a functional level, they both do the same thing. Right now, I'm using method A. Is that a bad way of doing things? Which is going to perform better?

• Drawing a 2D line on a canvas

  I have the datalist = 62, 76, 80, 72, 71, 75, 77 that i want to present as a 2D line drawed point to point. In my Wpf application i have a canvas with the height: 173 and width: 455. How do i go about it and draw a line by my datalist and use almost the whole height of the canvas? as it is now the data is just represented on a line at the bottom at the canvas, not using (and therefor giving a bad representation of the data) whole heigh of the canvas. It would also be nice to place it in the center of the box too...

  I'm revisiting data structures and algorithms to refresh my knowledge and from time to time I stumble across this problem: Often, several data structures do need to swap some elements on the underlying array. So I implement the swap() method in ADT1, ADT2 as a private non-static method. The good thing is, being a private method I don't need to check on the parameters, the bad thing is redundancy. But if I put the swap() method in a helper class as a public static method, I need to check the indices every time for validity, making the swap call very unefficient when many swaps are done. So what should I do? Neglect the performance degragation, or write small but redundant code?

  I have a project which needs to generate PDF documents. I am using iTextSharp. I have a pdf which needs to be read and then appended to. To read the pdf document, I'm using PdfReader(), which accepts many forms, but I can't figure out how to reference a pdf in my webapplication to PdfReader. My host does not allow Binary Serialization (apparently that's bad), so I don't think I can load from an embedded resource. I've tried just using PdfReader("report.pdf"), but it keeps throwing an exception telling me that the file isn't found. I've tried putting the file in the bin directory, root directory, in the same directory as the class, but this still doesn't work. It works if I use a fully qualified path to the pdf document, but I can't use that when I upload it to my hosting provider. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should do this? Thanks

  Data in the file_name field of the generation table should be an assigned number, then _01, _02, or _03, etc. and then .ldf (example 82617_01.pdf). Somewhere, the program is putting a state name and sometimes a date/time stamp, between the assigned number and the 01, 02, etc. (82617_ALABAMA_01.pdf or 19998_MAINE_07-31-2010_11-05-59_AM.pdf or 5485325_OREGON_01.pdf for example). We would like to develop an SQL statement to find the bad file names and fix them. In theory it seems rather simple to find file_names that include a varchar2 data type and remove it, but putting the statement together is beyond me. Any help or suggestions apprecuiated. Something like ........... UPDATE GENERATION SET FILE_NAME (?) WHERE FILE_NAME (?...LIKE '%STRING%');?

• How compiling circular dependencies works?

  I've made the example in Java but I think (not tested) that it works in other (all?) languages. You have 2 files M.java that says public class MType{ XType x; MType(){ x = null;} } and another file XType.java (in the same directory) public class XType{ MType m; public XType(MType m){ this.m=m;} } Ok it's BAD programming , but.. if you run javac XType it compiles: compiles even MTypes because XType needs it. But.. MType needs XType.. how it works? How does the compiler know what is happening? Probably is a stupid question, but I would like to know how the compiler (javac or other compilers if you know.) manages that situation, not how to avoid it. I'm asking because i'm writing a precompiler and I would like to manage that situation.. Thank you

• Pre-loading external files (CSS, JavaScript) for other pages

  I'm curious if there is an efficient way to wait for the front page of a site to load, and then pre-load CSS and script files that I know will likely be needed for the other pages on the site. I want the front page of the site to be as fast as possible (lean and mean). It's likely that the user will not immediately click on a link. Since there will likely be some idle time, this seems like an opportune time to pre-load some of the external assets. Pre-loading should cause them to become cached. When the user does click on another page, the only request needed will be for the content and possibly some images, etc. Has anyone done this? Is it a bad idea? Is there an elegant way to implement it?

• Sending JSON content type in from JavaScript objects ( jQuery ajax )

  I am having trouble sending JavaScript objects as a http request that only accepts json content-type. i.e "application/json" or "text/json" But, I am not sure why data2 ( stringified json ) works fine But, data1 ( json object ) does throws 400 ( Bad Request ). i.e I am not sure jQuery does not serialize the json object to a valid json string for the server to process. var data1 = ({ rating : 3 }); //does not work var data2 = '{ "rating" : 3}'; //works fine $.ajax({ url : "/rate", data : data1, type : "POST", contentType: "application/json", success: function(json){ console.log("Ajax Return :"+json); } });

• Should i use TabContainer for multiple pages?

  I'm considering if it is a good idea to use an ASP.Net TabContainer-Control in the way that every TabPanel contains content of a different page. For example: Next i want to implement in my application is the masterdata management. Normally i would create one aspx page for every masterdata-table (f.e. Customer - MD_Customer.aspx). Then i would add a link into my Menu to this page. Now i'm thinking of creating one aspx page for all(Masterdata.aspx) with a Tabcontainer and an UpdatePanel for every type of Masterdata. The link it the menu could have an additional MDType as URL-Parameter. My main concerns are related to performance(one "page" for every TabPanel currently means 7 "pages" in one) and maintainability because of increasing complexity. Is it a good approach or a bad idea?   I have Visual C++ application that needs to communicate with a ASP.NET web service. Specifically, the app needs to pass structured data (e.g. objects that contain lists of structures, etc) as a parameter to one of the service methods. The C++ application is already generating an xml document that contains this data. The document is generating using an xml library, so it should always well-formed. What is a good method for passing this data to the web service? I'm thinking about passing the document to the web service as a string parameter, then deserializing to a .NET object based on an xsd. But, I hear that passing an xml doc as a string parameter is not recommended. So, my questions: What are the pitfalls associated with sending the document as a string parameter, assuming that the document itself is always well-formed? Assuming the above is a bad idea, what are some good alternate approaches?

  Is there a way to pass the current state of a function into another function in C/C++? I mean all the parameters and local variables by current state. For example: void funcA (int a, int b) { char c; int d, e; // Do something with the variables. // ... funcB(); // Do something more. } void funcB() { // funcB() should be able to access variables a,b,c,d & e // and any change in these variables reflect into funcA(). } The code is in bad shape if there is a need for funcB() kind of functions.   Skipping the question of whether this is bad design (and the question of why I would want/need to do this), I'm just wondering if my 'math' is right... I have n things that need to be put in order (n is always less than 5): thing1 thing2 thing3 ... and I'd like to store these results in a single integer for thing. My initial thought is that (obviously the code will not look like this): thing = thing1 * 1 + thing2 * 2 + thing3 * 4 + thing5 * 8 will always give me a unique value, and that any value for thing will always translate back to its values for thing1...thingn. Is this correct?

• Scaling a ruby script by launching multiple processes instead of using threads.

  I want to increase the throughput of a script which does net I/O (a scraper). Instead of making it multithreaded in ruby (I use the default 1.9.1 interpreter), I want to launch multiple processes. So, is there a system for doing this to where I can track when one finishes to re-launch it again so that I have X number running at any time. ALso some will run with different command args. I was thinking of writing a bash script but it sounds like a potentially bad idea if there already exists a method for doing something like this on linux.
