• Append before parent after getSelection()

  Hi all, I have one question. I try to develop a little WYSIWYG editor. I would like create a <h1> button which allows me to generate a <h1> title (by clicking on button after text selection in <p> element). I obtain the selection with window.getSelection().... But now, I would like to put my append("<h1>my text selected</h1>") just before the <p>. It’s my problem, because my <p> elements don’t have id or class. So do you know a means to put my append just before the <p> where my text has been selected? I don’t know if with my bad English you’ll understand me! Thanks very much for your help.

• The right way to setup VisualStudio 2010 for OpenCL

  what is the right way to setup VisualStuio 2010 for working with *.cl files? I have added *.cl under Tool/Text editor/File extensions and copied usertype.dat into the common7/ide folder, but VS underlines keywords like float4 or cross. Is it necessary to add some key in registry or can somebody propose a tutorial? Thanks in advance. PS i have already asked similar question old one question, but now i am looking explicit for a solution with vs2010. It is not bad, but really nerves and deflects me from programming tasks.

• What is the best instance type to use for hosting a website on ec2?

  Amazon offers two instance types on EC2: 1) On-Demand and 2) Reserved. After reading the docs on these, I don't really understand the difference from an end-user perspective. More specifically, I'd like to know the answer to this question: is one or the other better for web applications? Based on their names and descriptions, it seems as though on-demand instances may get wiped away from the server altogether if they're not in use which means that they need to be restarted when a request finally does come in. That seems like a pretty bad thing for a website. Am I just misinterpreting the docs? Thanks!

• How can I implement log4j logging to an existing J2EE Struts web application?

  I have recently inherited a J2EE Struts web app that was written back in 2002. There is no logging in the application other than the odd System.out.println(). I have added log4j logging so that I can write out some info to the console, but I'm concerned on how best to approach this. Any suggestions, tips, best practices would be welcome as I don't want to spend too much time adding logging to every method or class (or trying to find what places where logging would be best - ie. bad code blocks/defects). My current approach is to just add some logging to the few classes that I have been looking at to understand the code, but are there a few key places where I can add logging to maximize my use of adding log4j?

The is no need for authentification or nothing (that is made by LAN Radius). So, the question is...   In javascript you can call a function as a function or as a constructor. For example you can do : myObject = new Number(13); myPrimitiveValue = Number(13); or simply myPrimitiveValue = 13; I understand the difference between the results. Can you explain me under which reasonable circumstances creating a number, a boolean or a string as an object is desirable? For example, ability to set new properties (this is something you can do on objects but can't really do on primitive values) is almost always a bad idea for objects containing number/boolean/string. Why would I want a numeric/boolean/string object?

• Commiting broken code to the repository for the purpose of backing it up

  I was just talking to another developer (more senior than I) and trying to convince him that we should implement continuous integration via Cruise Control. He told me that this will not work because he commits code that does not compile to the repository all the time for the purposes of backing it up. And that automated builds notifying us of failures would be just noise. Committing garbage to the repo sounds bad to me. But I was at a loss of words and didn't know what to say. What is the alternative? What's the best practice for backing up your code on another machine without adding a bunch of pointless revisions? BTW, our version control system is SVN and that probably won't change any time soon.

• Safe way of iterating over an array or dictionary and deleting entries?

  I've heard that it is a bad idea to do something like this. But I am sure there is some rule of thumb which can help to get that right. When I iterate over an NSMutableDictionary or NSMutableArray often I need to get rid of entries. Typical case: You iterate over it, and compare the entry against something. Sometimes the result is "don't need anymore" and you have to remove it. But doing so affects the index of all the rows, doesn't it? So how could I safely iterate over it without accidently exceeding bounds or jumping over an element that hasn't been checked?

• Generating a perfectly distributed grid from array

  I'm looking for a formula or rule that will allow me to distribute n characters into a n*n grid with as perfect of a distribution as possible. Let's say we have an array of 5 characters, A through E. Here's an example of how it definitely shouldn't turn out: A B C D E B C D E A C D E A B D E A B C E A B C D The pattern is very clear here, it doesn't look "random". It would look better this way: A B C D E D E A B C B C D E A E A B C D C D E A B What I basically did here was place the A B C D E on the first row, then shift it by 2 on the second row, by 4 on the third row, 1 on the fourth row and 3 on the fifth row. Compared to the very bad example, this one shows no clear pattern. Though I'm certainly hoping there is a pattern, so I can use it to calculate not only small arrays such as this one, but arrays of any size. Any ideas as to how this can be accomplished?

This works fine, however, I had trouble at first, instead of using myCards = new List(); to 'reset' myCards, I would use myCards.clear(), however, once I called the clear function, I would not be able to call myCards.add() or myCards.addRange(). The count would stay at zero. Is my current approach good? Is using LINQ to sort my cards good/bad?

• How to refer to the true 'body' of a page? [NOT iFrame body]

  I have a script that create a new div element. Then, I want to append the div to the body of the page using appendChild method. The script is look like this : var div = document.createElement('div'); div.id = 'newdiv'; document.body.appendChild(div); Unfortunately, the div also appended to the body of iframes. So, my question is, how to refer to the true body of the document, not including the body of the iframes? That way, the div just appended once, to the "true body" of the document. • Setting an empty default value for a char-column in MySQL?

  Hi In phpMyAdmin I have a char(32) column that has no default value(ie. Default: None). When I try to insert data through a SQL query, it throws out an error saying that the column "doesn't have a default value". I need it to be empty, so instead I've just set it's default value as "As defined: " and then nothing in the value field. Is this a bad idea? And is it any better than simply throwing in an empty value for the column in the SQL query? Thanks for your time.

• Why does set key not do anything in AES/SymmetricAlgorithm?

  This MESSED ME UP hard. I thought i was setting the key but i was not. No exceptions, nothing happen except bad results. Why is there a setter if everything is ignored and no exceptions are thrown when i attempt to write? What is the point of the setter on the Keys property? When i do the below Key value are not changed. After an hour when i realize what was happening i wrote the loop to verify. I also tried aes.Key[0] = val; var b = val == aes.Key[0]; (and messed with it in immediate mode). Why does it have this behavior? • Apache redirect when users home directory is completely empty.

  I work for an ISP and I have a server with thousands of users 10MB of free storage. They get this free storage with every e-mail account they have with us. An example of a users storage address: http://users.example.com/~username/ One problem I can see is scanning the server for user names to see what accounts are available, basically getting a list of all our customers valid e-mail addresses. This would be very, very bad. So I'm wanting to redirect to our homepage if someone comes across a users account that is empty (I'd say 90% of them are completely empty). I also do not want to simply -Indexes them and use a custom 403 because the few customers that do use them, want +Indexes. I know I can always just tell the customers to put a htaccess file in their directory with Options +indexes if they want directory listing, but that's a last resort. How can I make it pretty much impossible to tell what accounts are on the server but not in use at all?

I want to turn every single instance in the class interludeIntro invisible, but I want to turn specific instances visible later. I need to get the list of the changes on "status" column: the status, the date and the previous status on a specified item (It would be good as well getting the status and date when status was changed). I'm aware that in order to access a function within the class, you use call_user_func(): class foo { function bar() { echo 'hi'; } } $class = "foo"; all_user_func(array($class, 'bar')); // prints hi However, this does not work when trying to access a static variable within the class: class foo { public static $bar = 'hi'; } $class = "foo"; call_user_func(array($class, 'bar')); // nothing echo $foo::$bar; // invalid How do I get at this variable? Is it even possible? I have a bad feeling this is only available in PHP 5.3 going forward and I'm running PHP 5.2.6. Thanks.

• How to force calling of QWidget::paintEvent() when its hovered by other window?

  Hi there. I have occured a problem: I'm writing a widget, which displays current date's day number. It's like a button, but it's not derived from QPushButton class. Just from QWidget. So I reimplemented enterEvent(), leaveEvent(), mousePressEvent(), mouseReleaseEvent(). I call update() inside these methods and widget has realistic button behavior (paintEvent() is reimplemented too). But when I change system date and hover that widget with other window, my widget doesn't calls paintEvent() and displays old date. Only when I place mouse over it, widget repaints it's contents. I guess there is an option, which paints old contents on hover event to avoid unnecessary paint events. But I need to disable it. Tried to set many attributes (Qt::WidgetAttribute enum). But it doesn't helps. Please, help me (and sorry for my bad english).

I'm detecting the 2 events in the body <body onResize="doDisp();" onScroll="doDisp();" > where doDisp is this inside the <script> tag <script type="text/javascript"> function doDisp(){ alert("browser changing state"); } </script> but isn't it bad practice to have javascript in the body tag? Is there a cross-browser way to keep all the javascript inside the <script> tags?

• How do you send an array as part of an (jquery) ajax request

  I tried to send an array as part of an ajax request like this: var query = []; // in between I add some values to 'query' $.ajax({ url: "MyServlet", data: query, dataType: "json", success: function(noOfResults) { alert(noOfResults); } }); } I wanted to see what I get back in the servlet, so I used this line: System.out.println(request.getParameterMap().toString()); Which returned {} suggesting an empty map. Firebug tells me I am getting a 400 bad request error If I send a queryString like attribute=value as the 'data' then everything works fine, so it has to do with not being able to send an array as is. What do I have to do to get that data into the servlet for further processing. I don't want to pull it out and turn it into a queryString in the JS if I can avoid it. EDIT: I used the .serializeArray() (jQuery) function before sending the data. I don't get the 400 but nothing useful is being sent through.
