• How does Facebook codes their Cropping tool?

  I ask this because I am currently trying to work out my own technique, and there are huge strategic hangups for the entire site when your begin this. Of them are: Using jCrop and rMagick, it takes up a huge amount of processing ( to which I have backgrounded ). Because I have it backgrounded, I must by ajax develop a feature that auto-updates every five seconds to check when the backgrounding is done. Has anyone accomplished this with their sites? If so, what are some creative techniques you came across to keep the processing streamline, and the users happy?

• Notepad++ like "multi editing" in VIM?

  I'm switching from Notepad++ to VIM as main text editor. Notepad++ can have multiple cursors by holding down ctrl and clicking anywhere in the text, so if you type, the text appears in multiple locations. Is it possible in vim? Something like insert after selecting multiple rows in visual mode, but with the possibility to have cursors anywhere in the text. It's a feature I rarely use, also it's quite easily avoidable, I'm just curious, since its the only one I could't find a replacement for in vim yet.

• Detect at runtime which country's App Store my iPhone app was downloaded from?

  I have a feature in my iPhone application that, for business reasons, should only be shown/available to customers in the US. If I want to release this app to App Stores outside the US, what's the best way to figure out which country I'm in without relying on user-defined settings such as language and locale? In my mind, the ideal solution is that there's some runtime property that can tell me which App Store country the app was downloaded from, and I can take action accordingly. Looking through the docs and searching the web, I'm not coming up with anything in this department. I don't expect the solution to be 100% foolproof as far as users not being in the country they say they're from, but as close as possible would be nice. I suppose one solution would be to make a separate build for a new product on the App Store and have two versions, one for the US and one for the others, but that doesn't seem ideal. I'm hoping it can be the same product on the App Store to prevent things like fragmentation of user reviews. Thanks in advance!

• How to move iframe along the DOM without losing it's content?

  Is it possible? I have tried to move it, but iframe contents dissapear. Tried to get contents of iframe and place them in the new place but all handlers ofc dissapear. Tried to do the same, but with new jQuery 1.4.2 feature, that clones all events along with it. But it doesn't work :) So I have decided to ask here for help. How to move the damn iframe to another place in the document without losing it's contents? ^_^ Thanks Added: txtad_iframe = ad_container.find('iframe'); its_contents = txtad_iframe.contents(); its_body = its_contents.find("div:first").clone(true).insertAfter(cthis.find('#photos')); new_ad.append(its_body); Here i'm trying to copy contents to new ad container. But it doesn't work. Context banner doesn't react on click event. I have tried to move ad_container to container, but iframe body content dissapears.

  Intro I am working on an e-commerce website. And we want to add a feature where a user can refer others via a custom link e.g.: http://mysite.com/a1t2312 or http://mysite.com/?ref=a1t2312 (a1t231 being the referral code). A user following such a link, will navigate a few pages on the site. And if he reached the 'buy' page and purchases something - the original referrer will get a discount. The question is: What is the best method to track the referral code ? Put it in the user's cookies ? Stick it somehow into the session ? Other method ? Thanks

  Hello everybody. I want to achieve something like an expand and collapse uitableviewcell. The part of collapsing and expanding on user tap has been achieved. but what i am looking for is the feature of showing more and less. that is when the uitableviewcell has not expanded to show full view, the word more shud be displayed. and when the uitableviewcell is expanded it shud show the word less at the end. So that whenever the user taps on more, then only the uitableview shud expand and vice versa. so any ideas of how i can do this. something like on webpages. when u click on more link it expands the area and lets u see entire content.

• Co-opt popular abandonware opensource project?

  Here's the scenario: A popular open source project is used/loved by many but has become stale due to the fact that the last drop came out nearly a year ago. Many bugs/feature requests/fixes have been logged in the interim and everyone is getting by via downloading the trunk and building custom/private builds with the changes incorporated. The copyright is simple -- there is none and the code is in the public domain. The project owner spins the project as community open source and has set up a sourceforge site, but to date (5 years running now) has yet to accept one contributor. In other words the "community" is a community of one. The project owner takes great pride in the project and has obviously contributed a lot of time/effort but for whatever reason has has seemingly abandoned the project and is unresponsive when offers of help are made. So, the question, should the community fork the codebase, set up a new community site, and take matters in their own hands?

• How can I disable TinyMCE from stripping/modifying my HTML in Joomla?

  I've got a site running Joomla with TinyMCE set as the editor. One of the sites editors is now trying to embed a media player into an article but TinyMCE keeps messing up the HTML. I've tried setting the Extended Valid Elements, in the plugin config, to *[*] to allow anything and everything but it's not working. What I'd like is to disable the code stripping "feature" from TinyMCE all together. I don't want it trying to validate my HTML or anything like that. How can I disable the code stripping?

• Git 1.7.10 asks me for github username and password

  Since I have the new version it doesnt ask me anymore for the password I set in my ssh key file. It asks now directly for a github username and password when I push every time. Is this a new feature of git or changed it in the past or is there something what changed on github? I tried to authenticate using ssh and the email and password from my ssh ke file and it worked. • Persistent SQL Table lock from C#

  I'm trying to create a persistent SQL (SQL Server 2005) lock on a table level. I'm not updating/querying the specified table, but I need to prevent a third party application from updating the locked table as a means to prevent transactions from being posted (the table I wish to lock is the key on their transaction that interferes with my processing). From my experience the table is only locked for the time a specific transaction is taking place. Any ideas? The 3rd party developer has logged this feature as an enhancement, but since they are in the middle of rolling out a major release I can expect to wait at least 6 months for this. I know that this isn't a great solution, since their software will fall over but it is of a critical enough nature that we're willing to live with the consequences.

I know how to use canvas, how to draw it etc. but I want to store those coordinates with google map - just like with the google maps feature on internet. When I log in I can see points I've put on the map straight away. Can someone please tell me how to do that? There must be a way. Any answers greatly appreciated!

• HTML5 localStorage for assets (stylesheets, JavaScript, images etc)

  To save both client download time and network usage, is it possible to use the localStorage feature of HTML5 to store contents of linked stylesheets, javascript files and binary data (e.g. images), rather than hitting the server each time? Would that just complicate things - since I assume you would have to add the linked asset via JavaScript rather than just a script or link element, breaking the page for those without JavaScript enabled)? Unless you can parse the content (using HEAD requested to check last modified date and other headers) before the browser downloads it. Or best just to stick with 304 Not Modified and eTag headers?

  Hello, Having a hard time figuring out the best way to do this... I have a search function that takes "search terms" and "search location". In the location input, I have an suggestion feature that brings up "city, state abbreviation" but it seems some users just do not use it(or can't) so they end up entering just a city name... I need to append the state abbreviation after the form is submitted. I have a table with all city and state names in the U.S. but the problem is... there are multiple cities with the same name in different states... I would like to add the state abbreviation for the state that the city is most popular for(does that make sense?). For example, if the user enters "Miami" I would like it to become "Miami, FL" as opposed to "Miami, WV"... Any ideas? Thanks!

  Hi, I've seen lot of code that handle forms, which creates input fields with names containing square brackets. I understand that this is being somehow converted to PHP arrays when a PHP script examines the $_POST variable. My questions about this: What is the mechanism behind? At which point this names that merely contain brackets are converted to arrays? Is this a feature of the HTPP protocol? Of web servers? Of the PHP language? Continuing the previous question, is this a commonly used hack or a normal programming tool? What are (all) the rules of using brackets in input field names? • Using ECF shared editing with Python

  I can use the shared editing feature of ECF with Java fine perfectly fine. When I try to do it with Python files it also works, but there is no syntax highlighting. I installed PyDev to get syntax highlighting, but then the context menu does not have the "share editor" option. I removed PyDev and the option came back. I installed Dynamic Languages Toolkit in hopes that its Python syntax highlighting was compatible and I got the same effect (context menu lacks the "share editor" option). Is there a way to have a shared editing session with Python files and syntax highlighting?

• I need to create a web service using .NET-- where should I start?

  Hi All I am trying to implement a feature. But I've never had anything to do with "Web Services" before, other than using them. I have a desktop application, and I want that application to be able to sort of "post" some information (i.e. email address, username, user-selected options (just plain text) etc) to an application or "web service" on my ASP.NET web server.   I am using a "shake" function from github - and it has a detection that is browser-based javascript. //feature detect this.hasDeviceMotion = 'ondevicemotion' in window; This though yields true even on Chrome on OS X. It feels strange, since I am not willing to shake my monitor on my desktop. Safari on OS X gives me "false" in return when testing. I have searched but not been able to find out why Chrome decided to take this path. It bugs me. Is there a better way to make this detection? Not all "mobile devices" has shake as well.. or does not let the browser have that capability, as it does not seem to work in windows phones.

• WebSocket send extra information on connection

  Is there a way for a WebSocket client to send additional information on the initial connection to the WebSocket server? I'm asking because I want the client to send the user ID (string) to the server immediately. I don't want the client to send the user ID in the onopen callback. Why? Because it's faster and simpler. If the WebSocket API won't let you do this, why not? If there's no good reason, how could I suggest they add this simple feature?

  I'm trying to implement word boundaries in my emoticons feature for a chat. But for some reason I can't seem to get the word boundaries to work. I am new to regex. So when I do: var reg = /\b\Hi\b/gi; var str = 'HiHiHi Hi HiHiHi Hi'; alert(str.replace(reg, '')); This happens: Jsfiddle It actually works fine, and does remove those 2 Hi's that are standing alone. But when I change the reg to an escaped smiley and then change the string: var reg = /\b\:\)\b/gi; var str = 'HiHi:) :) HiHiHi :)'; alert(str.replace(reg, '')); This happens: Jsfiddle It just doesn't work. The string stays the same. Is it that word boundaries can't be used on symbols? If so, how does Facebook do it on their chats?

  Hi, I'm using MS log application block for logging my application event into a file called app-trace.log which located on the c:\temp folder. I'm trying to find the best way to read this file at runtime and display it when the user asks for it. now i have 2 issues: it seems that this kind of feature is not supported by the framework, hence i have to write this reader myself. am i missing something here? is there any better way of getting this data (w/o buffering it in the memory or saving it into another file). if i'm taking the only alternative that left for me, and implementing the reader myself, when i'm tring to do: System.IO.FileStream fs = new System.IO.FileStream(@"c:\temp\app-trace.log", FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); i'm getting "File being used by another process c#", probably the file is locked by the application block. is there any way to access and read it anyhow? • eclipse + multiple checkouts of version-controlled projects

  We're using eclipse and svn. We keep the .project file in version control. The problem is, if you have more than one checked-out project (e.g. a trunk checkout and a feature branch) and would like them both to be available in Eclipse, you lose, because the .project files are identical and therefore can't both be imported into Eclipse. What's the right way to deal with this? (I'm mostly having to deal with this in TI's Code Composer v4 which uses an older version of eclipse, but I'm also going to need to do this in the regular Eclipse)
