• Is it possible to query a XML file with SQL?

  Currently I'm working on a case where we don't want to change to much on a c#/wpf program, but like to add a feature. Currently we allow certain users to add sql queries to a database to retrieve customer data, hereby a custom connection string/ provider name must be specified. With this information it's possible to create the connection and obtain the data with c#. However we like to add the possibility to allow that user group to query XML files too, with a certain connection string/ provider name. I just had a look for possibities in .net to do that, but can't seem to find a decent way... Is something like this possible? (OleDb/ODBC way maybe?) Thanks in advance.

• Icons in Silverlight: Images vs. Vectors

  I like using the vector drawing feature of Expression Blend to create icons. That way I can change colors easily on my icons without having to resort to an image editor. But my question is... Say I have a treeview control that has an icon next to each tree element and say I have hundreds of elements. Do you think using images is faster - performance wise than using vector icons? B/c I'd rather use vectors but I'm wondering about performance concerns.

Vote or add comments will commit immediately and refresh total vote number and comments count. We want to refresh current row instead of whole table just like Facebook does. If need, we can show the list of data with form format (iterator List of data) instead of table format. How to implement this feature base on JSF?

• Resharper: how to force introducing new private fields at the bottom of the class?

  Resharper offers a very useful introduce and initialize field xxx action when you specify a new parameter in a constructor like: Constructor (int parameter) The only (minor) nuisance is that it puts the new field at the beginning of the class - and I'm a fan of putting private parts as far away as possible from the prying eyes of strangers ;). If, however, you already have some private fields in the class, Resharper will put the new field "correctly" (note the quotes, I don't want to start a flame war over this issue) next to those, even if they are at the end of the class. Is there a way to force Resharper to always put new fields at the end of the class? UPDATE: OK, I forgot to mention I know about the "Type Members Layout in Options" feature, but some concrete help on how to modify the template to achieve fields placement would be nice.

  Is it possible to "learn" a regular expression by user-provided examples? To clarify: I do not want to learn regular expressions. I want to create a program which "learns" a regular expression from examples which are interactively provided by a user, perhaps by selecting parts from a text or selecting begin or end markers. Is it possible? Are there algorithms, keywords, etc. which I can Google for? EDIT: Thank you for the answers, but I'm not interested in tools which provide this feature. I'm looking for theoretical information, like papers, tutorials, source code, names of algorithms, so I can create something for myself.

• Why do most Database developers hate Agile

  To me "Agile" methodology is a common-sense oriented approach and one that should likely be adopted for most software projects. I find that while a lot of Middle Tier Developers and Front End developers find it a very sensible project delivery model, plenty of Database developers (and good ones) seem to be totally against it. They are very keen on knowing the biggest picture and designing a database solution that will cater to that. They do not seem to like "Vertical striping" of a functionality. They would rather see the complete design document/feature document instead of concentrating on small user stories. Sarcasm aside, can someone realistically provide some insight as to why this mentality is prevalent? Especially DB devs? What would be a convincing argument against that?

  My name is Dimas and I work as a developer in a hospital. I've developed a web form with JQuery Mobile which is accessed from an Android tablet. It sends data (text and FILES) to the server (PHP) and it's saved in a MySQL database. This tablets are used by doctors that are visiting the patients in their homes. Some of these patients live in remote areas with very bad Internet connection, so I'm thinking on use HTML5 Offline feature to solve these situations. I started reading about it but I'm newbie with this technology. I've some questions: Do you think this is the best/easiest solution? If I could save the form data in a local sqlite storage when the tablet is offline, how I could synchronize it with the data in MySQL server when the tablet become online? Thanks

• .NET desktop App remembering login to a webservice

  I am in the planning stages of a .NET desktop app that will communicate with a web service. The web service requires a username and password, and a common feature in this sort of app is to save the user's credentials for the next logon. I've thought of a few ways of achieving this, but I am not sure what the most secure way would be. Should it be stored encrypted in a file (and could someone nefarious copy that file to their own machine and hence logon as the original person), or in the registry somehow (I've not done any registry work before, is it secure and would it work)? Are there any other options I might not have thought of?

  Hello, check this example: > a = matrix(1:9, nrow = 3, ncol = 3, dimnames = list(LETTERS[1:3], LETTERS[1:3])) > a A B C A 1 4 7 B 2 5 8 C 3 6 9 the table displays correctly. There are two different ways of writing it to file... write.csv(a, 'a.csv') which gives as expected: "","A","B","C" "A",1,4,7 "B",2,5,8 "C",3,6,9 and write.table(a, 'a.txt') which screws up "A" "B" "C" "A" 1 4 7 "B" 2 5 8 "C" 3 6 9 indeed, an empty tab is missing.... which is a pain in the butt for downstream things. Is this a bug or a feature? Is there a workaround? (other than write.table(cbind(rownames(a), a), 'a.txt', row.names=FALSE) Cheers, yannick

  In the file Parsers.scala (Scala 2.9.1) from the parser combinators library I seem to have come across a lesser known Scala feature called "lazy arguments". Here's an example: def ~ [U](q: => Parser[U]): Parser[~[T, U]] = { lazy val p = q // lazy argument (for(a <- this; b <- p) yield new ~(a,b)).named("~") } Apparently, there's something going on here with the assignment of the call-by-name argument q to the lazy val p. So far I have not been able to work out what this does and why it's useful. Can anyone help?

  I sometimes need to search code for patterns in a way that goes beyond the regex capabilities of Visual Studio (e.g. patterns that depend on what was seen previously in the file or on the contents of other files). So I use Perl to analyze the source and output matching lines, along with the file name and line number. Since this is the exact same format as is produced by the search feature of Visual Studio, I wonder if there is a way to duplicate the functionality where I can double-click on a line and it will display that line in context in Visual Studio. Any ideas?

  My site has a messaging feature where one user may message another. The messages support threading - a parent message may have any number of children but only one level deep. The messages table looks like this: Messages - Id (PK, Auto-increment int) - UserId (FK, Users.Id) - FromUserId (FK, Users.Id) - ParentMessageId (FK to Messages.Id) - MessageText (varchar 200) I'd like to show messages on a page with each 'parent' message followed by a collapsed view of the children messages. Can I use the GROUP BY clause or similar construct to retrieve parent messages and children messages all in one query? Right now I am retrieving parent messages only, then looping through them and performing another query for each to get all related children messages. I'd like to get messages like this: Parent1 Child1 Child2 Child3 Parent2 Child1 Parent3 Child1 Child2

• CAD/CAM without C++

  Hello, Is it possible to do CAD/CAM software without having to use C++? My company developed their software with c/C++ but that was more than 10 years ago. Today,there is a lot of legacy code that switching would force us to get rid of but i was wondering what the actual risks are. We have a lot of mathematical algorithms for toolpath calculations, feature recognition and simulation and 3D Rendering and i was wondering if C# can handles all of that without great performance loss. Is it a utopia to rewrite such algorithms in c# or should that language only deal with UI. We are not talking about game development here (Halo 3 or Call Of Duty) so how much processing does CAD/CAM really need? Can anybody enlighten me on this matter? Most of my colleagues are hardcore C++ programmers and although i program in c++ i love .NET but i am having a hard time selling .NET to them other than basic UI. Does it make sense to consider switching to .NET in such a field, or is it just not a wise idea? Thank you

  My knowledge in c++ at this point is more academic than anything else and in all my reading thus far, the use of explicit conversion with named casts (const_cast, static_cast, reinterpret_cast, dynamic_cast) has come with a big warning label (and it's easy to see why) that pretty much implies explicit conversion is symptomatic of bad design and should only be used as a last resort in desperate circumstances. So i have to ask: Is explicit conversion with named casts really just jury rigging code or is there a more graceful and positive application to this feature? Is there a good example of the latter?   I'm currently using jquery's ajax feature or whatever they call it. To load data from mysql database. Its working fine, but one of the built in features of this one is to load all the data which is on the database when you press on backspace and there's no character left on the text box. Here's my query: SELECT * FROM prod_table WHERE QTYHAND>0 AND PRODUCT LIKE '$prod%' OR P_DESC LIKE '$desc%' OR CATEGORY LIKE '$cat%' As you can see I only want to load the products which has greater than 0 quantity on hand. I'm using this code to communicate to the php file which has the query on it: $('#inp').keyup(function(){ var inpval=$('#inp').val(); $.ajax({ type: 'POST', data: ({p : inpval}), url: 'querys.php', success: function(data) { $('.result').html(data); } }); }); Is it possible to also filter the data that it outputs so that when I press on backspace and there's no character left. The only products that's going to display are those with greater than 0 quantity?

  Hello, I am searching for a rails-based CMS that provide rich text editing feature (e.g. I need an interface very similar to that of Wordpress where you can easily style up your static pages and upload pictures without knowing any css or html) AND easy to be dropped into an existing rails application. Camtose, RadiantCMS and few other ones did not seem to offer the rich interface I was looking for. RefineryCMS had conflict with my existing user authentication and I did not really find a solution to it. I am just wondering if there are any rails based cms that can meet my needs. Please advise if you know of any such rails-based CMS. Thank you for your help!

• Get/save parameters to an expected JMock method call?

  Hi, I want to test an "Adapter" object that when it receives an xml message, it digest it to a Message object, puts message ID + CorrelationID both with timestamps and forwards it to a Client object.=20 A message can be correlated to a previous one (e.g. m2.correlationID =3D m1.ID). I mock the Client, and check that Adapter successfully calls "client.forwardMessage(m)" twice with first message with null correlationID, and a second with a not-null correlationID. However, I would like to precisely test that the correlationIDs are set correctly, by grabing the IDs (e.g. m1.ID). But I couldn't find anyway to do so. There is a jira about adding the feature, but no one commented and it is unassigned. Is this really unimplemented? I read about the alternative of redesigning the Adapter to use an IdGenerator object, which I can stub, but I think there will be too many objects.=20 Don't you think it adds unnecessary complexity to split objects to a so fine granularity?   I'm trying to find a version of UDP which just alleviates the restriction of a maximum size of the message sent. I don't care about reliability or partial retransmission, if all chunks arrive I want the message to be assembled from the chunks in sending order and delivered to the listening app. If one or more chunks are missing I would just like to discard the message. The goal is to have a low-latency notification mechanism about real time data, but with the added support for bigger messages than what would fit in an IP datagram. I would like the protocol to be one way only, and not have long connection setup times. An optional feature to be able to respond to a received message wouldn't hurt (a concept of an unreliable connection), but is not necessary.

• Cannot use String.Empty as a default value for an optional parameter in C# - then what's the point?

  I am reading Effective C# by Bill Wagner. In Item 14 - Minimize Duplicate Initialization Logic, he shows the following example of using the new optional parameters feature in a constructor: public MyClass(int initialCount = 0, string name = "") Notice that he used "" instead of string.Empty. He comments: You'll note [in an example above] that the second constructor specified "" for the default value on the name parameter, rather than the more customary string.Empty. That's because string.Empty is not a compile-time constant. It is a static property defined in the string class. Because it is not a compile constant, you cannot use it for the default value for a parameter. If we cannot use the string.Empty static in all situations, then doesn't that defeat the purpose of it? I thought that we would use it to be sure that we have a system-independent means of referring to the empty string. Is my understanding wrong? Thanks.

  We are investigating the Entity Framework to see if it will meet our particular needs. Here is the scenario I am interested in: I have a large table (let's call it VeryWideRecord) which has many columns, and it has a corresponding business object (it's also called VeryWideRecord). I would like to be able to query my database for a VeryWideRecord business object, but only have values for certain columns returned by the underlying SQL. Can I do this with the Entity Framework? I am uncertain as to whether this could be done with the Entity Framework's table splitting feature, because the application needs to be able (at runtime) to change the columns that are requested. The reason for this is that we are trying to minimize the amount of information that is going across the wire. I see how this could be done using NHibernate (example), but how can I do this with the Entity Framework?

• How do I make my browser brute force an input field?

  Hi, There's a website I frequent that gives codes such as GD??Q-TPY32-TPTT3-9CM9P-F2QMQ and hints that the ?? is a number and a letter. If you're the first to unlock the code you can redeem the modest prize. So the obvious way to solve this problem is to brute-force the code. But obviously I don't want to sit in front of the computer for an hour to manually input all 10 * 26 combinations. Is there a way for me to tell my browser to input these codes (assume that each 5-character block is an individual text field). Or is there a special browser that enables some sort of macro-type feature? Thanks.

• Migrating from mssql to firebird: pro and cons

  i am considering the migration for 3 reasons: 1) SQLSERVER installation is a nightmar, expecially for 1-user software. Software installs in 10 seconds, SQLServer in 1 hour. Firebird installation is much easier. 2) SQLSERVER runs on windows server only 3) My customers have all the express edition 4) i am not using any advanced feature, I am now starting using filestream, but the main reason for this is that Express eidtion has 4/10GB db size limit So these are all Pros of moving to Firebird. Which are the cons? I can also plan to support both platiforms, but this will backfire I fear.
