• Where is a good place to start to learn about custom caching in .Net

  I'm looking to make some performance enhancements to our site, but I'm not sure exactly where to begin. We have some custom object caching, but I think that we can do better. Our Business We aggregate news stories on a news type of web site. We get approximately 500-1000 new stories per week. We have index pages that show various lists of the items and details pages that show the individual stories. Our Current Use case: Getting an Individual Story User makes a request The Data Access Layer(DAL) checks to see if the item is in cache and if item is fresh (15 minutes). If the item is not in cache or is not fresh, retrieve the item from SQL Server, save to cache and return to user. Problems with this approach The pull nature of caching means that users have to pay the waiting cost every time that the cache is refreshed. Once a story is published, it changes infrequently and I think that we should replace the pull model with something better. My initial thoughts My initial thought is that stories should ALL be stored locally in some type of dictionary. (Cache or is there another, better way?). If the story is not found, then make a trip to the database, update the local dictionary and send the item back. Since there may be occasional updates to stories, this should be an entirely process from the user. I watched a video by Brent Ozar, How StackOverflow Scales SQL Server, in which Brent states "the fastest database query is the one that you don't make". Where do I start? At this point, I don't know exactly what the solution is. Is it caching? Is there a better way of using local storage? Do I use a Dictionary, OrderedDictionary, List ? It seems daunting and I'm just looking for some good starting points to learn more about how to do this type of optimization.

The blog is only a minor part of my website, but before making this change I want to make sure that I don't loose SEO value. What is the best option to make this change? Bonus question: how big is the SEO-impact of a subdirectory (mywebsite.com/news) to the PageRank of the main domain (mywebsite.com)?

• Java Not Recognized As Default Application

  I just installed java according to this article, and 'java -version' displays java version "1.7.0_07" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_07-b10) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.3-b01, mixed mode) 'update-alternatives --config java' returns this: There are 2 choices for the alternative java (providing /usr/bin/java). Selection Path Priority Status ------------------------------------------------------------ 0 /usr/bin/gij-4.6 1046 auto mode 1 /usr/bin/gij-4.6 1046 manual mode * 2 /usr/local/java/jdk1.7.0_07/bin/java 1 manual mode Press enter to keep the current choice[*], or type selection number: with update-alternatives --config javac (or javaws) returning similarly. however java isn't listed in the default applications menu when I click on a .jar file and go to "open with application". I tried to install java this way, and on the update-alternatives part of the command returned me: /etc/alternatives/[java,javac,javaws] is dangling, it will be updated with best choice I just confirmed that I can use java, as 'java -jar file.jar' does work. Just figured that I'd mention it, don't know why I didn't before, but when I right click on a .jar file, java 7 run-time isn't even listed there, it seems that the file-manager isn't recognizing it as a program, but it is there, and it does work...

• New way of integrating Openfeint in Cocos2d-x 0.12.0

  I am trying to implement OpenFeint for Android in my cocos2d-x project. My approach so far has been creating a button that calls a static java method in class Bridge using jnihelper functions (jnihelper only accepts statics). Bridge has one singleton attribute of type OFAndroid, that is the class dynamically calling the Openfeint Api methods, and every method in the bridge just forwards it to the OFAndroid object. What I am trying to do now is to initialize the openfeint libraries in the main java class that is the one calling the static C++ libraries. My problem right now is that the initializing function void com.openfeint.api.OpenFeint.initialize(Context ctx, OpenFeintSettings settings, OpenFeintDelegate delegate) is not accepting the context parameter that I am giving him, which is a "this" reference to the main class. Main class extends from Cocos2dxActivity but I don't have any other that extends from Application. Any suggestions on fixing it or how to improve the architecture? EDIT: I am trying a new solution. Make the bridge class into an Application child, is called from Main object, initializes OpenFeint when created and it can call the OpenFeint functions instead of needing an additional class. • Original sender is not correctly identified when spam is forwarded

  I have a forwarding rule with Postfix that forwards all messages to my main email address. When a spam message is sent to one of my emails, it is forwarded but the sender is shown as being the forwarding domain, not the spammer's domain. Real example: mywebsite.com is hosted on Linode. [email protected] sends an email to info@mywebsite.com the mail is forwarded to myemail@anotherwebsite.com my email hosting (anotherwebsite.com) sees it's spam and sends a message to abuse@linode.com and Linode reports a TOS violation. I have modified my postfix settings so I now use RBL, but if a message goes through, it may happen again. How can I prevent this to happen again? Is there some settings to change on Postfix so the original sender is correctly identified? Thanks Stephan

  I'm reading "Java concurrency in practice" and there is said: "Fortunately, the same object-oriented techniques that help you write well-organized, maintainable classes - such as encapsulation and data hiding -can also help you crate thread-safe classes." The problem #1 - I never heard about data hiding and don't know what it is. The problem #2 - I always thought that encapsulation is using private vs public, and is actually the data hiding. Can you please explain what data hiding is and how it differs from encapsulation?

  I am running MATLAB R2013b. Under Unity, the built-in editor of MATLAB shows empty tooltips, as seen here: http://imgur.com/4VSq6i8 Under xfce the tooltips are showing up just fine. My system: Ubuntu 14.04, Intel i7 4770K.   I learned very early on that cutting & pasting somebody else's code takes longer in the long run that writing it yourself. In my opinion unless you really understand it, cut & paste code will probably have issues which will be a nightmare to resolve. Don't get me wrong, I mean finding other peoples code and learning from it is essential, but we don't just paste it into our app. We rewrite the concepts into our app. But I'm constantly hearing about people who cut & paste, and they talk about it like it's common practice. I also see comments by others which indicate it's common practice. So, do most programmers cut & paste code?

  I've created a kickstart script to install CentOS 5.5 (32bit) in a fully automated way. The DNS/DHCP setup correctly gives the system the right hostname in both the forward and reverse lookups. dig node4.mydomain.com. +short 10.10.10.64 dig -x 10.10.10.64 +short node4.mydomain.com. In the state the installed system is right after the installation completed is as follows: cat /etc/sysconfig/network NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=yes GATEWAY=10.10.10.1 HOSTNAME=node4.mydomain.com echo ${HOSTNAME} node4.mydomain.com cat /etc/hosts # Do not remove the following line, or various programs # that require network functionality will fail. 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost ::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6 10.10.10.64 node4 My problem is that this automatically generated hosts file is slightly different from the way I want it (or better: the way Hadoop wants it). The last line should look like this: 10.10.10.64 node4.mydomain.com node4 What do I modify where to fix this? Thanks.

  I have decided that since my game world is mostly flat I don't need better shadows than geometric projections - at least for now. The only problem is I don't even know how to do those properly - that is to produce a 4x4 matrix which would render shadows for my objects (that is, I guess, project them on a horizontal XZ plane). I would like a light source at infinity (e.g., the sun at some point in the sky) and thus parallel projection. My current code does something that looks almost right for small flying objects, but actually is a very rude approximation, as it doesn't project the objects onto the ground, but simply moves them there (I think). Also it always wrongly assumes the sun is always on the zenith (projecting straight down).   I want a setup where an e-mailaddress like user+foo@domain.com redirects mail to the folder foo. I've already got dovecot configured and tested. It is called by postfix with this line in master.cf: dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=vmail:vmail argv=/usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -f ${sender} -d ${user}@${nexthop} -n -m ${extension} I expect ${extension} to expand to 'foo' but it is always empty. I've added recipient_delimiter = + to my main.cf. How can I get it to work? Update: I've got a catch-all alias that redirects @domain.com to user@domain.com. It seems that the extension is empty because of this. So the question becomes: Can I have a catch-all so that random+ext@domain.com redirects to user+ext@domain.com without explicitly defining either the random or the ext part?

• What Ranking Factors Are Used For International Search?

  Google.com vs Google.ca vs Google.co.uk (etc) all rank their results differently. The intention is to return more locally-relevant content. What factors, other than the ones below, are used to determine local relevancy? I already know the TLD (.com, .ca, etc) and likely the server IP address is used but there has to be more as this would not explain some search results I noticed this week. Particularly, I see a US-based site ranking #3 for some keywords on Google.com, ranking #5 on Google.ca and not ranking within the first pages on Google.co.uk. On Google.com it outranks a Australian site which outranks it on Google.ca. The site itself is relevant for all English-speaking locations and it being outranked by sites from different regions on different Google TLDs (but not ones from the same region as the TLD).

• Preventing adult content in a forum

  I'm working on a forum that allows images attached to the posts and doesn't require registration. Thing is, I'd like to provide a work-safe navigation option in which the posts with porn images attached aren't shown. The ideas I've come up with are: Making the work-safe option the default and treating all posts with images attached as pornographic, and making them visible only if the user "unchecks" it. Making all posts with images attached not work-safe by default and changing their status to work-safe only after a moderator approved it. Only then they would be visible if the user has the "work-safe" option checked. Does anyone else have an idea? Also, how the big web services deal with this? (YouTube, CraigsList, even StackExchange). By the way, I don't think that "nudity detector" libraries are accurate and they give plenty of false positives and negatives. Thanks!

• Mount exFAT partition in virtual guest machine

  I have a real Ubuntu 12.10 installation being virtualized under a Windows 8 host, by using the VBoxManage.exe internalcommands createrawvmdk method. I'm trying to mount an exFAT partition into the virtualized machine (which is the partition of shared work files), but even though I have fuse-exfat installed, and the partition is perfectly mountable while booting entirely into Ubuntu, I can't mount it while virtualizing it. 1- If I make a full vmdk image of the HDD, including all partitions, Ubuntu 12.10 "sees" the partition, and trying to mount it throws this error: Image: http://i.stack.imgur.com/AyUSn.png 2- If I make a machine with only the linux partitions, + the exFAT partition. • Default file permissions for php user www-data

  I have a php installed on my ubuntu machine. The web root is /var/www I set the permissions for this folder like so: sudo chown -R ftpuser:www-data /var/www ftpuser is the user I set up so I can ftp to /var/www from another machine on the network. www-data is the user php uses. I double checked using whoami from php. Whenever I ftp upload a new file to the machine the group has no permissions to the file. So when I try to access it in my browser via machine-name/new-file.php I am told permission denied and I have to go and chmod the new file. I am wondering if there is a way I can default the www-data user/group to have access permissions to new files so I don't have to keep chmod every new file?
