• Skype does not save user configuration

  On Ubuntu 10.10, I have recently started to experience this problem: For some reason Skype won't save any settings except "Sign in on startup". When Skype starts and tries to sign in it is unsuccessful (it shows incorrect password, in red) every time (I have provided the correct password). I always have to click to show contacts in groups, it does not remember it. Every time I have to go to options and update some notification settings. I know all these things should be "remembered" by Skype - this problem started only recently. I don't recall fiddling with any permissions that could have likely caused that. Do you know what the problem might be? I uninstalled (marking for complete configuration removal) and re-installed Skype, but it still remembers my username (why??). Can I find Skype configuration files on the filesystem somewhere and change permissions for them - or even better - edit the files to set what I want?

• Root access issues - how do others manage this?

  Hi there I use my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS instance (via Virtual Box on Windows 7) with a non-root user. I am trying out developing Rails applications and I notice that I need to run some rails commands with sudo. The problem this gives me is some files are created by the root user then, and I cannot edit them via a GNOME window with my logged in user. What is the correct thing to do here? Should I somehow always login as root? If so how? Is there some way for me to give all files under my home directory (where I do all my Rails work) the correct permissions for all users, so I can edit them with my logged in user via a window? At the moment I have to resort to opening a file via the command line like this sudo gedit myFile.rb - this is not very sustainable! Thanks in advance!

  I am looking for a tool that I can use to create sprite sheet easily. Right now I am using Illustrator, but I can never get the center of the character in the exact position, so it looks like it is moving around(even though its always in one place), while being loop through the sprite sheet. Is there any better tools that I can be using? Also what kind of tips would you give for working with a sprite sheet? Should I create each part of the character in individual layers (left arm, right arm, body, etc.) or everything at once? any other tips would also be helpful! thank you

• Recommendations for finding part-time consultancy work

  Although I have a full-time development job, I have occasionally done some part-time paid work in evenings / weekends for various people who have contacted me as a result of open-source projects I have worked on. It's a nice way to earn a bit of extra cash, but obviously it is not always available. My question is, what is a good way of getting your name out there to do some small projects? I have seen a few programmers-for-hire type websites, but I don't know which I can trust or whether there are too many people willing to work for very low prices. Also, being UK based, I would want something which did not assume I have a US bank account.

  My PC has 2 wired cards. Both gigalan. It also has 2 wireless cards. One broadcom with proprietary drivers and ralink with open software (which works much better than broadcom). My cellphone can share its connection wirelessly to my PC. But I also have a wired connection. So I have multiple connections that I can use to have internet. How can I merge 2 or more connections together and balance them to enjoy one unified internet experience that it is the sum of all internet connections connected to it. For example if I have an internet connection that offers 1024KB/Sec and another that offers 512KB/Sec and one small one that offers 128KB/Sec, after load balancing and merging all connections, I could download at a speed of 1664KB/Sec using all 3 internet connections as one for example. • Asus 1215n GPU driver/s don't give me a "full" OS experience

  I'm use to not having specific drivers from a manufacture on my laptop when running a Linux OS and that has always been fine - there's been adequate FOSS drivers for my needs and it hasn't ruined any of my OS experience. When I bought an Asus 1215n one of the upsides to the hardware seemed to be the switchable GPU that could give lots of performance or lots more battery life and would switch on-the-fly... with Windows of course. Seems that the Nvidia driver are crap and people advise not installing them. I have some sort of workaround for vga_switcharoo (?) and the on-the-fly nature of the GPUs has turned in to a manual one :( The worst bit though (aside from shorter battery life) is the web experience with HTML5. If I visit Mozilla's Web O'Wonder site I'm told I don't have WebGL working due to driver issues. This really blows - is it possible that proprietary drivers can now ruin my web experience too?!

• Authenticating users for a website

  I'm working on a website and I want to validate that an individual is an employee at one of a large number of companies (probably using their company's email address, which I don't know before hand). The idea being some users are the general public and others are from these companies. And I need some way to authenticate that the users claiming to be employees are being honest while still having a friendly enough UI. I did an informal survey of people I know and the domains and emails will match in a majority of cases but they might not always match exactly so you might have a company with a website foo.com and an email [email protected] (although foobar.com did redirect back to foo.com). And while I can easily check that I'm not sure what other variations might be out there (maybe fooLA.com and email [email protected], etc.)

• Why does sound stop working after a while?

  I don't know how to reproduce this problem, because I don't regularly play music or sound. All I know is that, sometimes, I'll load a video (from youtube or from a local file) and there will be no sound. That works well, but since 12.10 every one of those items is listed in Nautilus in the left column under "Devices". (Where normally USB drives appear, etc.) This is a waste of space (as I have many of such mounts...) and so I would like to have these mounts hidden, just as it was before in 12.04. • What should a page's minimum word count be in order to be effectively indexed?

  I'm seeding a new site with hundreds of (high quality) posts, but since I am paying per word written, I'm wondering if anybody in the community has any anecdotal evidence as to how many words of content there should now be for a page to be counted just the same as a 700 word+ post, for example? I know there are always examples of pages ranking well with, for instance, 50 words or less of content, but does anyone have any strong evidence on what the minimum count should be, or has anyone read anything very informative in regards to this issue?   I've set a samba server that seems to work, all shares are seemingly exported as readonly, however. The machine is called "lx". I noted that domain accounts did NOT include a domain and they are in german (as on the SBS 2003 that is the domain server). So I get a "Domänenbenutzer" in wbinfo -u's output not a "CUSTOMER+Domain User" or something similar. (Who may access it). As mentioned, accessing the share from smbclient results in this NT_STATUS_MEDIA_WRITE_PROTECTED . Accessing it from windows shows ACLs that look correct (The user may write) - but it does not work, I can only read files not write. • How do I allow all possible IPs for Gmail servers through my ufw firewall?

  I am currently using the following rule: ufw allow out from my_local_ip to any port 587 This is a little too lax for my liking. I would like to tighten it up and restrict it to only gmail's smtp server ip addresses, but they are always changing. I used to just wait until an outgoing email didn't make it to its destination, then check syslog for the ip address that was blocked, then add that to the ufw configure script. However, now I have a need for much more reliability. Is there any way to use smtp.gmail.com in ufw? I don't think so, but thought I would ask. Any other ideas? Thanks.

• Managing time for success in the industry? [closed]

  So about a year ago I decided to pursue programming, specifically game development, as a career. I've always been a pretty avid gamer, from chucking turnips at Shy Guys' faces in the 90s, to downing Heroic Deathwing last week. Just recently though, I've been spending a LOT of time playing games and it's starting to show in my programming classes. Yesterday after a discouraging exam, I put my foot down and vowed to myself to keep the gaming:coding ratio in favor of the one that will hopefully pay the bills later on. I realize that knowing games well is a key part of being a good developer, but as I've been recently shown, there's a threshold of pixelated indulgence that must not be crossed if I'm ever going to land my dream job. I'm assuming many of you are quite enthusiastic about games as well. What advice would you give an aspiring programmer regarding time management? Thanks!! • How to control / disable low level battery on bluetooth mouse

  I have a little problem with my Kesington Bluetooth Mouse on Ubuntu 12.10. Ubuntu 12.10 considers my bluetooth mouse battery as a system battery as if it was the main laptop battery (so I have two on the battery indicator, the main and the bluetooth one). When it runs low level, near to die, battery, my laptop acts as if it was the main battery and I must quickly stop bluetooth and continue on the touchpad if I want to work. Can anyone help me? Maybe I prefer to disable the battery control over the mouse, I don't care about it, I know it is fully charged, but Ubuntu always starts on 33% or less, I just want to work with it and when it will be battery-off I will recharge the batteries.   I've been in touch recently with Ann Maybury, who is creating a golf tournament roundrobin manager for senior citizens in Palm Desert, California. The application is created on the NetBeans Platform and looks as follows, very neat and professional: Ann has been working on wrapping up the application for distribution and needs to include the JRE, since end users of the application don't necessarily have the JRE installed when they install the application. Several blogs and articles are available for creating and customizing installers for NetBeans Platform applications, as well as for bundling the JRE and other resources, though there are some gaps and inccuracies in those documents. However, now there's a new official tutorial, for the first time: http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-nbi.html The above is focused on Ant builds and Windows, specifically, and doesn't cover Maven scenarios, for which there'll be a separate tutorial soon. • How to fix "maximum number of clients reached"?

  About 30 Oct I ran recent updates for 12.04 64bit. No errors occurred. Next day when I booted computer most apps would not start or if started (eg Chrome) other app windows do not appear. Trying a command line start on most apps gives this message: "Maximum number of clients reachedError: cannot open display: :0" The 'error' part of message not always the same. Have tried to find solution on Ubuntu forums and other Linux web sites, but cannot find a solution. HELP please.

• Audio playback: part of song is skipped

  I am experiencing some problems with music playback after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10. Basically some of the songs stop playing after some time as if the song has ended. It's always the same songs and the same time. The weird thing that it happens with Clementine and Totem but VLC doesn't have this problem and it also plays as it should on Windows. I'm guessing there might be a problem with some library that's shared with by the first two applications. I don't know if it's relevant but the file format of the audio files is flac(don't know if the problem affects mp3, because I don't have many of them).

  Lately, I've been working a lot in PHP and specifically within the WordPress framework. I'm noticing a lot of code in the form of: if ( 1 == $options['postlink'] ) Where I would have expected to see: if ( $options['postlink'] == 1 ) Is this a convention found in certain languages / frameworks? Is there any reason the former approach is preferable to the latter (from a processing perspective, or a parsing perspective or even a human perspective?) Or is it merely a matter of taste? I have always thought it better when performing a test, that the variable item being tested against some constant is on the left. It seems to map better to the way we would ask the question in natural language: "if the cake is chocolate" rather than "if chocolate is the cake".

• New website, plans to go large. How do you protect yourself?

  I'm planning to create a new site that (in hopes) will make it to a decent state of popularity and use. I have made sites before, but they weren't serious, with any intended purpose other than personal and friend use. I've never been able to find a solid post on good steps to protecting yourself, and your site/idea before you start. This site will always be free, and will not be bringing it any revenue by ads or whatnot, but I plan to in the future and would want to make I'm in the clear legally for one. Do you need to copyright anything? Or anything of the same concept as copyright? Do I make an LLC to operate it under? Apologies for this extremely poorly written question, basically I want to be both legal, and I want to make sure nobody can just rip my idea or name(s). (I'm sure this will be more concise as questions here are asked) Thanks

  I plan on building a gallery/exhibition event site. so Locations are usually always the same an fall into 3 categorys (gallery, offspace, institution). then there is the Exhibition title the date and the participating artists. So I was wondering if Wordpress could handle such a site. it should be very data driving though, so all the information is in a list view on one site and can be ordered and queryed (which artists took part in which exhibitions and so on) Please tell me the cons and pros of using Wordpress for such a site and problems I could run into if I might plan to broaden the scope later on. thanks!
