  • Microsoft Discontinuing Windows Home Server

    As part of their ongoing push to simplify their product lineups, Microsoft is discontinuing their popular small office/home server platform Windows Home Server. On to see the new alternative for small volume users. Although, in the context of the simplification push, it shouldn’t seem surprising, many people were in fact surprised by Microsoft’s move to drop the extremely popular and economical WHS platform. Now, instead of dropping $99 on a copy of WHS to build their simple home servers users will find themselves on the first tier of the new Windows Server 2012 pricing ladder: a copy of Essentials for $425.   • How can we use Microsoft Groove with peers existing in both secure and unsecured network segments?

    We have been instructed to implement a Microsoft Groove workspace. This would normally not be a concern, but the workspace will be utilized by machines which exist in our internal/restricted network as well as from peers from an outside/unknown network. Does there exist a best-practice for such an implementation?... or would this potentially expose the restricted network too broadly?

  • Microsoft StyleCop is now Open Source

    I have previously talked about Microsoft StyleCop. For those that might not know about it, StyleCop is a source analysis tool (different from the static analysis that FxCop performs) that analyzes the source code directly. As a result, it focuses on more design (or style) issues such as layout, readability and documentation. In an interesting move (and one that I am happy to see), Microsoft has decided to make StyleCop an open source project (under the MS-PL license) available on CodePlex. (The project site isn’t up  yet, but should be in the next few weeks.) This will give the development community the opportunity to help contribute to the project, expanding support to other languages (currently it only supports C#), adding features, and fixing bugs. Shortly after the CodePlex site is up, StyleCop 4.4 will be released which includes support for C# 4.0 as well as a large number of bug fixes and other improvements.     Microsoft Project does not allow a comma to be added to a resource name. In healthcare, the norm is to refer to people using the pattern of Name, Title which in my case is John Cook, RN.   • Can the Microsoft Surface Pro drive multiple external monitors?

    I am interested in simultaneously connecting two Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP 24-inch Widescreen Flat Panels to my Microsoft Surface Pro. Currently I am attempting to utilize a StarTech Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort / DVI / HDMI Multifunction Adapter by connecting one monitor to the adapter via HDMI and the other via DisplayPort. Unfortunately, I am only getting video on the Surface itself and the monitor connected via DisplayPort. Is this StarTech adapter capable of simultaneously driving two monitors? Is the Surface itself even capable of driving two monitors?

    Today I got a brand new Microsoft Surface. With the touch keyboard this really feels like a small notebook, my only problem is: How do I sync my SkyDrive files to the device? There is SkyDrive app installed, but it can't sync, I can only access the files one by one. And the usual desktop sync program can't be installed since the system is not x86 but ARM instead. So how do I sync SkyDrive to this device??

  • Microsoft Async CTP for DDD9 UK Developer Conference - slides and source code now available

    Thanks to all the nice comments from people who attended my presentation at DDD9, and extra thanks to Jon Skeet, Mark Rendle and Mike Hadlow for coming on stage for the last ten minutes to help debate whether the Async CTP is the correct way to go to enhance C# 5.0. The presentation is available at Prezi.com http://prezi.com/gysz5nohltye, which I can recommend as a refreshing change to the more standard PowerPoint slidedecks. I've also uploaded all the code samples into a single ZIP file. You will need to install the Async CTP to be able to run them, and I would remind everyone that the current Async CTP is not compatible with either ASP.NET MVC 3 RTM or Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 so you may need to use a test system of virtual machine to play with it!   • How do I find and replace 'whole words only', in Microsoft Word?

    I want to be able to find and replace eat with Eat in Microsoft Word 2007. However, I don’t want to replace every occurrence of eat such as those that can be found inside other words such as great and meat. I have tried doing this using the regular Find and Replace tool, but I get words with capital letters in the middle. Is there a way I can just replace eat with Eat if it only exists on its own?
