• Indefinite hang when restoring SQL 2005 database on a SQL 2008 server in EC2

  I'm trying to restore a 25 GB database backup taken from a Windows 2003/SQL 2005 machine to a Windows 2008/SQL 2008 machine in the Amazon EC2 cloud, using a .bak file and the SQL Management Studio. SQL Management Studio reports the restore reaches 100% complete, and then just hangs indefinitely (24+ hours) using a lot of CPU, until I restart the SQL Server service. Upon restart, SQL again uses a lot of CPU activity for what seems to be an indefinite amount of time, but the DB never comes online. Here are some details: - I have created two EBS volumes, one for DATA and one for LOGS, and I have set the default directories in SQL Server to the \DATA and \LOG directory on these respective volumes. (I wonder if the issue could be related to this, but the DB is too big to restore on the root drive.) - I have given the SQL Server user group full access to these directories. - The server can create a new empty test DB in these directories just fine, and can backup and restore the test DB. - I have tried both restoring of a .bak file and attaching directly to copies of the original .mdf/.ldf files, and the result is the same in both cases. - Both the .bak restore and the .mdf/.ldf attach occur from/to the EBS volumes. - I've also tried the above via SQL script, and "WITH RECOVERY", with no difference in the result, just less UI. - The backup contains two full text indexes. - I have to use "WITH MOVE" for most of the files in the backup. - There's nothing wrong with the backup or .mdf/.ldf files, as this works just fine on a Windows 2003/SQL 2005 machine in the Amazon EC2, but not Windows 2008/SQL 2008. - The DB is NOT marked as "Restoring" in the SQL Management Studio - it is just listed as a normal database, but throws errors when I try to do anything with it (expand the object browser tree, view properties, etc.) Any ideas?

• Vagrant synced folders aren't case sensitive

  For our web stack, we are moving from a Windows Server to CentOS. To facilitate development, we're utilizing Vagrant to run CentOS VMs locally. We're using Vagrant's Synced Folders feature to allow devs to use their favorite IDEs on their host machine, but we're finding that one key feature is missing from this setup: file system case sensitivity. The synced folder inside the VM apparently takes on the properties of the host's file system, so if I'm developing from a Windows machine, or even OSX, the file system isn't case sensitive. This is a big issue, as our production servers will be pure CentOS, and its file system will be case sensitive. Case sensitivity is one of the main reasons we wanted to have a local VM. We want to prevent "It works on my machine!" Some workarounds we've considered or tried: Use lsyncd to sync from the vagrant share to a location within the VM that is case sensitive updating files on the host doesn't seem to generate the events in the VM that lsync listens to Make a case-sensitive partition on the host (Doesn't work for Windows) Use samba this may be an option, but we haven't vetted it yet. Is there a better way? Note that we have developers using Windows, OS X, and Ubuntu, and the solution needs to work everywhere.

• svchost consuming more than 50% CPU all the time in windows 7

  Hello, I'm using windows 7 ultimate. svchost containing DCOM Server Process Launcher Plug and Play Power services is consuming more than 50% of CPU for most of the time. I found this blog post: http://blog.hansmelis.be/2007/06/17/windows-vista-long-delay-when-switching-songs-in-media-player/ That process is associated with two services: DCOM Server Process Launcher and Plug and Play. For the Vulcans among us, all logic stops there for a second. What do those two services have to do with WMP? The answer is provided by Vista's new audio engine. The new engine supports several audio "enhancements". But for the enhancements to work, the engine needs to determine if your hardware is up to the task. And when does it check that? Each time a sound output device is accessed. That's pretty nice if you can do a hot swap of sound hardware, but I don't see me doing that anytime soon. Anyways, it does provide us with the link to the correct service because checking hardware is done by the "Plug and Play" service. One might think that deactivating each enhancement would solve the problem, but that's wishful thinking. The configuration of the enhancements is located in the properties of the sound hardware. When opening the tab, I found out that no enhancements were active. Hmmm... so why does it check the hardware? Well, it does that in case you actually enable an enhancement. To completely stop the hardware checking, you have to tick the box labelled Disable all enhancements. As soon as you do that, Vista finally understands you don't want to use them buts thats for vista. Is it the same case with windows 7 too? and I couldn't find any "Disable all enhancements" in my controlpanelsounds (mmsys.cpl). Where can I find this option in windows 7? How to solve this?

• New user profile creation error - Windows cannot open *.exe

  I have a windows 7 laptop with the user "mydomain\boy" that cannot log in to the laptop. the error message is something like "User profile service cannot log in the user boy". I then logged in with the domain admin account "mydomain\admin" and then went to delete the "mydomain\boy" from my computer system properties advance system settings user profiles settings. I also ensure that the user is deleted from control panel user accounts. I then also deleted the user folder c:\users\boy I also checked that the registry at this location HKLM\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\profilelist\ and ensure that there is no entry for boy. I followed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215 using the method 3 "fix it for me" but does not seem to do anything. (or i don't know how to use it). AFTER EVERYTHING DONE ABOVE... Everytime i log in with a new user, be it boy, girl or anything other domain account (other than the admin account already created when I first logged in to begin the fix/break), it takes a long time, and when the "preparing desktop" goes away, it starts to exe cannot open error e.g. regsvr.exe etc.. file association problem with exe QUESTION (phew finally..): Please tell me how to fix it? • Exchange 2007 restore - Backup Exec Unable to Attach to a resource

  I have been struggling with this one for months! Grateful for any advice. The setup is a windows 2003 server network, 4xservers on the domain. Two exchange 2007 servers (only one with mailboxes still on). Backup Exec (12.5) on a non-exchange server with agents on the others. Backup exec runs a full backup of exchange across the network well, at pretty reasonable speeds. However, when you try any kind of restore (individual emails, mailboxes or whole system restore - all to same location or to alternate server, RSG etc) the following message is received within about 10-15 secs of starting the job: Job ended: 24 December 2010 at 13:28:32 Completed status: Failed Final error: 0xe000848c - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again. If the server or resource no longer exists, remove it from the selection list. Edit the selection list properties, click the View Selection Details tab, and then remove the resource. Final error category: Resource Errors For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33932 Things I have already tried: Changed account to main administrator account (with all permissions) checked versions of ese.dll on both servers - both the same Checked all VSS writers on both servers are stable / normal restoring to different locations Any advice anyone could give would be much appreciated. • OpenVPN and TomatoVPN

  Wondering if someone can help me with the following. I have updated my Linksys router with TomatoVPN and used the following config: Interface Type:TAP Protocol:UDP Port:1195 Firewall Custom Authorization Mode:Static Key I have then inserted the static key generated in OpenVPN saved and started the service. connect.ovpn. # Use the following to have your client computer send all traffic through your router # (remote gateway) remote (entered my DNS/DHCP servers external IP address here) port 1195 dev tap secret static.key.txt proto udp comp-lzo route-gateway 192.168.1.1 redirect-gateway float I've then placed my static key in a file in the same directory as your connect.ovpn (static.key.txt) Now OpenVPN is installed on a laptop that I use at home. I have plugged in the laptop to my home connection and started connect.ovpn The Local Area Connection is connected as 'Home Network 3' - and when I start OpenVPN it is connected as 'Local Area Connection 2' and this is showing as 'Unidentified Network' and it appears there is no network access. TAP-Win32 Adapter V9 appears to be the adaptors name and the IP and DNS properties are set to automatic. If I open up the OpenVPN GUI it shows an error message saying "Connecting to connect has failed". Looking at the error message behind this pop-up one line says "TCP/UDP Socket bind failed on local address [undef]:1195 Address already in use [WSAEADDRINUSE] Could anyone possibly help me further with this please?

• Tomcat 6 Windows Server 64 Redirect Connector Fails

  So is there some problem with running the Tomcat connectors under a 64 bit windows OS? Here's my configuration: Windows Server 2003 64 bit Intel Xeon Tomcat 6.0.26 JVM 1.6.0 (64bit) ISAPI Redirect Connector 1.2.30.0 (64 bit) Calling the IP address of the site with :8080 brings up the tomcat page so I know that's running and the examples all work so its obviously not having a problem with the JVM. Calling the site ip on port 80 however gives me error 324 - looking at the application log on windows shows "Could not load all ISAPI filters for site/service. Therefore startup aborted". The ISAPI filter page under the web site properties shows the status of this filter to be down with a red arrow. The ISAPI filter name is jakarta and there is a corresponding virtual directory set up in the root of the site pointing to the same directory as the filter. The jakarta web service extension is also pointing to the required dll (c:\program files\apache software foundation\jakarta isapi redirector\bin\isapi_redirect.dll). Incidentally, this same problem occurs when trying to use Tomcat 5.5. I've also tried swapping out various redirect versions. It's really odd because I got it to work once with a version of the redirector that came with Plesk but I've since uninstalled everything to do with plesk and even trying to use the plesk-compiled dll doesn't work now. I am pulling my hair out on this, any ideas?

• How can I fix my corrupted RAID1 ext4 partition on a Synology DS212 NAS?

  I have two identical 3 TB disks that were in a RAID1 array, where one disk crashed. I replaced the failed disk, but not after the RAID partitions got messed up. I need to figure out how to restore the RAID array and get at my ext4 partition. • Scheduled tasks fail to start unless I'm logged in to the server

  Tasks need to open a CMD window and pass net use commands, then do a DIR command, pipping the output to a file on the server. Log in as either me (Sysadmin) or with one of the system accounts and task will only run if I'm physically logged into the server. Run as batch file is set in security properties for both users (me and service account), security is granted to all directories, etc. It almost acts like a scheduled task, since it is not physically connected to a display can't create a CMD window and pass the WinID so the command can be sent. I'm guessing. Anyone know of a document that explains how the server handles initiation of a window if done via scheduled task and no attached user is associated with the task? If I log onto the box and run the scheduled tasks they run fine, but produce no errors or event log entries and then just show that it ran successfully and sets the next run time. Have tried both with the run if logged in checkbox on and off and makes no difference. Other tasks work fine, except that they are acting on local drives with no display writing or updating taking place, so I'm guessing the system either can't instantiate a window if no display is connected to a logged on user, or it can't establish a point if it is trying to create a virtual screen. You'd think it is just creating a memory map and then mapping it to a device to display, but that doesn't seem to be the case, but I can find no documentation on how the system handles a scheduled task and how to invoke a fake or virtual screen that it could write to so it appears that a user was connected. Thanks This is driving me nuts and I've tried everything I can think of as well as our network boys ideas and nothing seems to work.

  I have a website running on a Linux computer using Apache. I've employed mod_auth_kerb for single-sign-on Kerberos authentication against a Windows Active Directory server. In order for Kerberos to work correctly, I've created a service account in Active Directory called dummy. I've generated a keytab for the Linux web server using ktpass.exe on the Windows AD server using this command: ktpass /out C:\krb5.keytab /princ HTTP/[email protected] /mapuser [email protected] /crypto RC4-HMAC-NT /ptype KRB5_NT_PRINCIPAL /pass xxxxxxxxx I can successfully get a ticket from the Linux web server using this command: kinit -k -t /path/to/keytab HTTP/[email protected] ... and view the ticket with klist. I have also configured my web server with these Kerberos properties: <Directory /> AuthType Kerberos AuthName "Example.com Kerberos domain" KrbMethodK5Passwd Off KrbAuthRealms EXAMPLE.COM KrbServiceName HTTP/[email protected] Krb5KeyTab /path/to/keytab Require valid-user SSLRequireSSL <Files wsgi.py> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Files> </Directory> However, when I attempt to log in to the website (from another Desktop with username 'Jeff') my Kerberos credentials are not automatically accepted by the web server. It should grant me access immediately after that, but it does not. • Enable RemoteApp Full Desktop programmatically

  I am writing a powershell script to set up some HyperV VM's however there is one step I am having trouble automating. How do I check the box to allow Remote desktop access from the RemoteApp settings programmatically? • CD and DVD burning very slow with LG DVD Burner

  I have an HP m7560in Desktop which came with an LG DVD burner. As far back as I can remember, it has been having problems in burning discs. It used to take about one and a half hour to burn 4 GB of data on a blank DVD-R. I am using Nero and ImgBurn and I usually select 8x speed for burning. I used to run XP earlier and now I run Windows 7 on it, but I face the problem on both. I have already checked that DMA mode is selected in the IDE controllers' properties. On XP, uninstalling the IDE controllers and DVD drive from the Device Manager, rebooting and letting it install the drivers again fixed the problem for a while, but after a couple reboots, the problem used to come back. On Windows 7, even doing that is not fixing the problem. In fact, in Windows 7, the burning process doesn't even begin. Imgburn gets stuck on the first stage (of writing Lead-In), and it never progresses until I turn off / reset the computer. I checked the disc info after this happened, and the disc still shows empty and ready to be burned on, so it's obvious that it didn't even touch the disc. I have already had the drive replaced once by HP, but it didn't fix the problem. Do you guys have any suggestions? (Note that Windows Updates doesn't give any newer driver for the controllers, or any other components for that matter).

• USB Wifi will not connect on Windows 7 (Even though the driver installs OK)

  Windows 7 will not connect to a WiFi Netowrk using a USB Network Adapter. I have 3 adapters, A Senoa SUB 364 (EXT), a Repeatit SU2410 USB V2 and a ZYXEL G202. All of these devices install OK on Windows 7 Home Premium on my Destop PC (64 bit) and on my Asus Wii Netbook (32 bit). In each case the adapter can be enabled/disabled and the driver properties says it is working correctly. When I try and connect to a network Windows 7 behaves as though the adapter does not exist and reports no networks. The Wii has an integrated adapter which works perfectly under Windows and connects to either of the 3 networks available to me. I have done all the checks I can on the configuration. What seems odd to me is that it happens to all 3 devices on 2 different windows 7 PCs both of which are working perfectly in any other respect. This suggests the common denominator is me and I must be doing something wrong.. what's also strange is that I cannot find any similar problems being reported on any of the forums. From what reading I've been able to do it seems like the new wifi virtualisation thingy in W7 is not recognising the adapters which suggests I', missing a configuration option somewhere. Looking forward to finding out if I'm not alone or just being stupid. Pete

  We have a lot of mobile/home users with different client side printers attached. Most of these users don't need to print on the client side and we don't want all of these users Terminal Services sessions trying to map their client side printers and we don't want all of these drivers on the Terminal Server. What is the best way to set up around 90 users to have no client side printer redirection and 10 users to have client side printer redirection (to the printers attached to their home computers)? Do I need to create two separate OU's in AD one for redirection and one for no redirection and create two different policies one for each OU? One GPO with Client Server data redirection Do not allow client printer redirection disabled and one enabled? Is it preferrable instead to change each user's AD User Properties Enviroment Client devices Connect client printers at logon setting? Is there any for me to direct "ALL HP Printers" to a single HP Universal Printer Driver, "ALL Canon Printers" to a single Canon Universal Printer Driver, etc without specifying hundreds of unique printer names in the printsub.inf file? Also how come my ISP's nameserver is used even if i set google public dns as my dns server in my PC?(OR does my any settings are wrong)

  I needed some coordinates for a HTML MAP and tried to use inkskape by opening the image and just draw a path with my polygon coordinates. The original image The SVG file from inkscape Link to SVG Progress: I tried a tool called InkscapeMap which looks promising and simple, but unfortunately it looks like it didn't work with this particular svn file. Solved! Saving the file as a Plain SVG solved the problem and InkscapeMap worked perfectly. (Btw. saving as an optimized svg caused a parsing error) Update 13.11 Using inkscapeMap 0.6 and Inkscape 0.48 i needed to uncheck relative coordinates in SVG output preferences. Also if you get a C error message, hunt down the polygon with a C in it, and redraw the polygon using the XML editor in inkscape. • Dynamically add Server 2008 NLB Nodes

  Hi All, I have a small NLB cluster for Terminal Servers. One of the things we're looking at doing for this particular project (this is for a college class) is dynamically creating Terminal Servers. What we've done is create policies for a certain OU, that sets the proper TS Farm properties and installs the Terminal Server role and NLB feature. Now what we'd like to do is create a script to be run on our Domain Controller to add hosts to the preexisting NLB cluster. On our Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller, I was thinking of running the following PowerShell script I've kind of hacked together. Any thoughts on if this will work? Is there any way I can trigger this script to run on the DC once all the scripts to install roles are done on the various Terminal Servers? Thanks very much in advance!! • HP c6180 driver refuses to install - "must reboot to continue delete files and continue install" loo

  User called me last night, can't get HP drivers to install for printer. 500 meg download for latest c6180 driver. PC says "computer must be restarted to delete some files, then setup will continue." and it won't pass that point. (that's not exact phrasing of the error, and I'm not on the system now) Target machine is XP SP2. I upgraded to SP3. Fully patched. Ran malwarebytes, spybot, hijack this and turned off all startup entries. I noted that windows update also failed on optional printer driver updates for other printers installed on the machine. Went to printer server properties, removed all print drivers from system, deleted all printer ports. Made sure no services were marked disabled. After 5 hours of fighting this I started to get desperate, and uninstalled anything that referenced HP in the machine at all. Still no cure. I'm 6 hours into this and completely stumped. Google returns nothing applicable except unanswered requests for help on same topic.

• DFSR NTFS Permissions Not Working!??!

  I have two windwos 2008 standard servers running DFSR okay. I can create a file on one server, it is replicated to the other okay etc. I have the namespace shared folder on each server shared with full control administrators / everyone change/read permissions. I then browse to the folder on server 1 e.g.\server1\namespace\share\folder1. I right click the folder, and configure the NTFS permissions as I would like for example Adminsitrators Full Control / One User Read/Write Access / No other users in the user list. I save this and then double check the second server e.g. \server2\namespace\share\folder1. I right click the same folder name as before and can see the NTFS permissions have replicated accordingly. I right click the folder and go to properties - security - advanced - effective permissions and select a user that shouldnt be able to get into that folder e.g. testuser. It agrees with the NTFS permissions and shows that testuser has no ticks next to any permissions so should be denied access. I logon to any network PC or the server as testuser. Browse to \server1\namespace\share\folder1. It lets me straight in, no access denied messages. The same applies to server2. It seems as thought all my NTFS permissions are being ignored. I have 1 DFS share and then all the subfolders are a mixture of private folders and public folders so need the NTFS permissions to work ideally. Any idea whats going on? Is this normal? From my tests all users can access any DFSR folder under the namespace\share which is quite worrying. Thanks

• Windows 7: Windows Firewall: Logging/Notifying on Outgoing Request Attempts

  I'm trying to configure Windows Firewall with Advanced Security to log and tell me when programs are trying to make outbound requests. I previously tried installing ZoneAlarm, which worked wonders for me with this in XP, but now, I'm unable to install ZA on Win7. My question is, is it possible to somehow monitor a log or get notifications when a program tries to do that if I set all outbound connections to auto-block, so that I can then create a specific rule for the program and block it.? Thanks! UPDATE: I've enabled all the logging options available through the Properties windows of the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security Console, but I am only seeing logs in the %systemroot%\system32\LogFiles\Firewall\pfirewall.log file, not in the Event Viewer, as the first answer suggested. However, the logs that I can see only tell me the request's or response's destination IP and whether the connection was allowed or blocked, but it doesn't tell me what executable it comes from. I want to find out the file path of the executable that each blocked request comes from. So far, I haven't been able to.

• Windows file sharing with a private LAN when a public VPN is connected?

  OS: Windows Vista My LAN interface is configured as a "private network". I want to have all the sharing and discovery features (Network Discovery, File Sharing, Public Folder Sharing, Printer Sharing, Password Protected Sharing, and Media Sharing), so I enabled them all. My VPN interfaces are configured as "public networks", and I do NOT want to have any of the above features. Now the problem is that if I disabled these sharing features while a VPN is connected, it affects both interfaces. I guess the Network and Sharing Center is probably an oversimplified tool that may not support multiple interfaces. Where can I tell Windows to enable sharing features for the private networks and not the public networks? For file sharing, I think I can disable "File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks" in each of the VPNs' properties. However, I will need to disable it every time I add a new VPN. Moreover, I can't find how to disable Media Sharing by this way. If this can be more easily done in Windows XP or 7, please let me know.

• SQL Server 2008 Remote Access

  I'm having problems connecting to my SQL Server 2008 database from my computer. I have enabled remote connections as described in this answer (http://serverfault.com/questions/7798/how-to-enable-remote-connections-for-sql-server-2008). And I have added the ports listed on the microsoft support page to our Cisco Asa firewall and I'm still unable to connect. The error I'm getting from the SQL Management Studio is: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10060) Once again, I have double and triple checked that remote connections are enabled under the database properties and that TCP is enabled on the configuration page. I've added tcp ports 135, 1433, 1434, 2382, 2383, and 4022 as well as udp 1434 to the firewall. I've also checked to make sure that 1433 is the static port that is set in the tcp section of the database server configuration. The ports should be configured correctly in the firewall since http/https and rdp are all working and the sql server ports are setup the same way. What am I missing here? Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Edit: I can connect to the server via TCP on the internal network. The servers are colocated in a datacenter and I can connect from my production box to my development box and vice versa. To me that indicates a firewall issue, but I've no idea what else to open. I've even tried allowing all tcp ports to that server without success.

• A Domain Admin user doesn't have effective Administrative rights on a Domain Computer

  I am a developer who is setting up a virtual domain environment of testing purposes and am having trouble with the setup. I have created a new DC on a new Forest... call it dev.contoso.com. I have setup a virtual internal network for all machines that are going to be apart of this virtual test environment and have given each machine a static IP address in the 192.169.150.0 subnet. I have added machine1.dev.contoso.com to the domain dev.contoso.com. I have also provisioned a user account (adminuser) in the domain and made that user a member of Domain Admins group. Upon logging into machine1 using my newly created Domain Admin account, I cannot access/run any files on machine1. When I go into the advanced permissions for the c:\ folder and goto properties - Security Tab - Advanced - Effective Permissions and search for the dev\adminuser (mentioned above), I get an error saying: Windows can't calculate the effective permissions for admin user What do I need to do to get Administrative rights on Machine1? I am using Server 2008 R2 for both the AD controller and machine1.
