  i have designed an er model and then normalized it till the BCNF and converted it into tables using vs08. my problem is i do not know from where to get the normalized database checked to see if it has no mistakes in normalization- can not be further normalized. please do not give answers such as- ask a friend- ask your professor- do not have these resources available- it is very very hard and really time consuming waiting for the relevant person to be available. so are there any sites from where i can ask help from other designers- people like you to check the normalized database? please note:- it should be free, sorry for accept rate, was not aware of accepting the answers, all the help is appreciated thank you

• ORM in the realworld

  I am begining a new project that i think will last for some years. Am in the point of deciding the ORM framework to use (or whether to use one at all). Can anyone with experience tell me whether orm frameworks are used in realworld applications. The problem i have in mind is this: The orm tool will generate for me tables and columns etc as i create and modify my entities. However, after the project has gone live and is in production, certain database changes will not be possible. Can this hinder the advancement of the project. If i had used a framework like ibatis for example, i know i would only need to adjust the sql statements based on the database changes. Can someone tell me whether ORM tools have survived the live environment. At my office, we use java based ERP that was done long ago and it was never done using any ORM framework. Regards. Josh

• Lightweight Object->Database in python

  I am in need of a lightweight way to store dictionaries of data into a database. What I need is something that: Creates a database table from a simple type description (int, float, datetime etc) Takes a dictionary object and inserts it into the database (including handling datetime objects!) If possible: Can handle basic references, so the dictionary can reference other tables I would prefer something that doesn't do a lot of magic. I just need an easy way to setup and get data into an SQL database. What would you suggest? There seems to be a lot of ORM software around, but I find it hard to evaluate them.

Am I missing something? Note: Just in case, I've added the irregular plural 'match' => 'matches' in application/config/inflector.php

  I have a simple example of a blog: a Post table, a Tag table and a Post_Tag_MM lookup table linking the two tables. InnoDB is one of MySQL storage engines, it supports transactions, row-level locking, and foreign-keys. However, by default, InnoDB is not enabled by XAMPP. To enable it, locate the my.cnf configuration file (normally in C:/xampp/mysql/bin directory) and search for the following lines: # Comment the following if you are using InnoDB tables But the path C:/xampp/mysql/bin directory in my system doesn't seem to have such a file...   I have the following requirements I have relational content stored in a SQL Server 2005 database. I want to retrieve this data, transform it and display it in an Excel 2007 document. I would like this to be pulled from within Excel at the click of a button. As far as I can tell I have the following options... Create a view in Sql Server and reference it within a pivot table using a data connection. Create an Excel workbook using VSTO and create a web service which the workbook pulls data from Create a web service and use JScript with XMLHTTP request objects I currently only have a little experience of any of these methods (I'm very familiar with SQL Server although not pivot tables, I've created many web services although I've never used VSTO and I've used javascript extensively, but never in the context of Excel manipulation). Would you recommend one of the above approaches or is there a better way to do this?

• MS SQL Return 1 Row Per Boat

  Basically, what I want to do is join 4 tables together and return 1 row for each boat. Table Layouts [Boats] id, date, section, raft [Photos] id, boatid, pthurl, purl [River_Company] id, sort, company, company_short [River_Section] id, section Its very simple as far as structure, however, I've having the time of my life trying to get it to return only 1 row. No boat will ever be on the same day, the only thing that's messing this up is the photo table. If you know a better way for it to return the record table for all the boats boats and only 1 photo from the photo table, please, please post it!!

I wrote a sql like this: select tmp1.id,sum,cond1,cond2 as count from ( select id, count(*) as sum from table_1 group by table1.id) tmp1 left join ( select id, count(*) as cond1 from table1 where condition1 group by table1.id) tmp2 on tmp1.id=tmp2.id left join ( select id, count(*) as cond2 from table1 where condition2 group by table1.id) tmp3 on tmp1.id=tmp3.id the problem is that this is very poor efficiency, it will be better if i could use the result of tmp1, but i don't know how to do that. update: simplified the sql, what i mean is how to reuse the first select result of table_1

  Let's say I have the following tables: PartyRelationship EffectiveDatedAttributes PartyRelationship contains a varchar column called class. EffectiveDatedAttributes contains a foreign key to PartyRelationship called ProductAuthorization. If I run this: select unique eda.productauthorization from effectivedatedattributes eda inner join partyrelationship pr on eda.productauthorization = pr.ID where pr.class = 'com.pmc.model.bind.ProductAuthorization' it returns a list of ProductAuthorization IDs. I need to take this list of IDs and insert a new row into EffectiveDatedAttributes for every ID, containing the ID as well as some other data. How would I iterate over the returned IDs from the previous select statement in order to do this?

• Multiple aggregate functions in one SQL query from the same table using different conditions

  I'm working on creating a SQL query that will pull records from a table based on the value of two aggregate functions. These aggregate functions are pulling data from the same table, but with different filter conditions. The problem that I run into is that the results of the SUMs are much larger than if I only include one SUM function. I know that I can create this query using temp tables, but I'm just wondering if there is an elegant solution that requires only a single query. I've created a simplified version to demonstrate the issue. • Entity Framework - Why does EF use LEFT OUTER JOIN's in a 1-to-1 join?

  Why does .NET Entity Framework produce SQL that uses a subquery and left outer join on a simple 1-to-1 relationship? I expected to see a simple join on the two tables. I'm using Devart Dotconnect for Oracle. Any ideas? Below is the output I see courtesy of the EFTracingProvider: SELECT 1 AS C1, "Join1".USER_ID1 AS USER_ID, ... • Are ORM's counterproductive to OO design?

  In OOD, design of an object is said to be characterized by its identity and behavior. Having used OR/M's in the past, the primary purpose, in my opinion, revolves around the ability to store/retrieve data. That is to say, OR/M objects are not design by behavior, but rather data (i.e. database tables). Case and point: Many OR/M tools come with a point-to-a-database-table-and-click-object-generator. If objects are no longer characterized by behavior this will, in my opinion, muddy the identity and responsibility of the objects. Subsequently, if objects are not defined by a responsibility this could lend a hand to having tightly coupled classes and overall poor design. Furthermore, I would think that in an application setting, you would be heading towards scalability issues. So, my question is, do you think that ORM's are counterproductive to OO design? Perhaps the underlying question would be whether or not they are counterproductive to application development.

  I'm lazy loading my Doctrine classes in my website. Benchmarking has showed that Doctrine::loadModels('models') takes over 100 ms to complete! I have 118 tables in total, but still... setting attribute to conservative loading: Doctrine_Manager::getInstance()->setAttribute(Doctrine::ATTR_MODEL_LOADING, Doctrine::MODEL_LOADING_CONSERVATIVE); running the benchmark part: $CI->benchmark->mark('Doctrineload_start'); Doctrine::loadModels(APPPATH.'models'); $CI->benchmark->mark('Doctrineload_end'); And the result: Doctrineload 0.1085 (seconds) Is this 'normal'? • Are some data structures more suitable for functional programming than others?

  In Real World Haskell, there is a section titled "Life without arrays or hash tables" where the authors suggest that list and trees are preferred in functional programming, whereas an array or a hash table might be used instead in an imperative program. This makes sense, since it's much easier to reuse part of an (immutable) list or tree when creating a new one than to do so with an array. So my questions are: Are there really significantly different usage patterns for data structures between functional and imperative programming? If so, is this a problem? What if you really do need a hash table for some application? Do you simply swallow the extra expense incurred for modifications?

I've added some features to the application and in the process I had to add a new field to one of the database tables.   Hi everyone, I've got a problem with using for xml explicit in SQL Server 2000 (so I can't use the new path() stuff from sql 2005/8) Essentially I have two tables and the XML structure I want to have is <xml> <table_1 field1="foo" field2="foobar2" field3="foobar3"> <a_row_from_table_2 field1="goo" field2="goobar2" field3="goobar3" /> <a_row_from_table_2 field1="hoo" field2="hoobar2" field3="hoobar3" /> </table_1> </xml> That is, table_1 has a one-to-many relationship with table_2, and I want to make a hierarchy of it. So far I can't seem to get it, the closest I've managed to get is all the records from table1, with all the records from table2 appended to the very last element of table1 Any help with setting up this kind of relationship would be greatly appreciated. -Marcin

  I'm trying to create a relationship between "tables" with Appengine/Python. Imagine I have a "table" for items, and a table for colors. I save the color of an item by saving the color key as an atribute of the item. That's working well, but this particular piece of code is not working: <select id="colorKey" name="colorKey"> {% for color in colors %} <option value="{{ color.key }}"{% if color.key = item.colorKey %} selected="selected"{% endif %}> {{ color.name }} - {{ item.colorKey }} - {{ color.key }} </option> {% endfor %} </select> Since the {{ item.colorKey }} and {{ color.key }} variables are actually the same chain of characters, I only can think in a problem with the types. {{ item.colorKey }} is a string for sure. But maybe {{ color.key }} is not?

B) Sort by will contain by employee number, date of birth , Salary , and many more C) Filter by will contain like employee on vacation, or employee terminated etc etc. Now for a single webreport I am first taking a DataSource and binding data to labels. to achieve the above webreport I have to take 40 different Datasource and I have to assign to the labels? Should I be doing this?

• Fast permutation -> number -> permutation mapping algorithms

  I have n elements. For the sake of an example, let's say, 7 elements, 1234567. I know there are 7! = 5040 permutations possible of these 7 elements. I want a fast algorithm comprising two functions: f(number) maps a number between 0 and 5039 to a unique permutation, and f'(permutation) maps the permutation back to the number that it was generated from. I don't care about the correspondence between number and permutation, providing each permutation has its own unique number. So, for instance, I might have functions where f(0) = '1234567' f'('1234567') = 0 The fastest algorithm that comes to mind is to enumerate all permutations and create a lookup table in both directions, so that, once the tables are created, f(0) would be O(1) and f('1234567') would be a lookup on a string. However, this is memory hungry, particularly when n becomes large. Can anyone propose another algorithm that would work quickly and without the memory disadvantage?
