  • spring.net application scope repository object on loadbalanced application

    Hi, We have an application running on a loadbalanced environment, let say webserver A and B. The loadbalancing is on the HTTP level, so the loadbalancer directs each user request to one of both webservers. The scope of the repositories in the application is managed by the spring.net container, and the application relies on data that can be cached by the repository (performance reasons). In this case we can never be sure that the cached data in the repositories on both webservers is the same. Is there mechanism in spring.net that can manage this kind problem? Or is there another common approach for this kind of thing? Any ideas? Thx, Bert

  • .NET Code Access Security: Useful or just overcomplicated?

    see also Is “Code Access Security” of any real world use? I want to get some other opinions on this... I like the idea of Code Access Security for desktop applications. But in the lifetime of .NET I have to admit I've never actually had a situation where CAS has actually blocked something to my benefit. I have, however, had many times where something as simple as sharing a quick .NET application across a mapped drive becomes an enterprise code access nightmare. Having to break out caspol.exe to create trusted path rules and having no clear way of knowing why something failed makes it seem like CAS adds way more frustration to the development and deployment process than it offers in security. I'd like to hear either some situations where CAS has actually helped more than hurt, or if there are other people out there frustrated with its current implementation and defaults.

  • .NET invoking against an arbitrary control.

    I have a method which takes in a .NET control and calls invoke against it like so: Form.Invoke(Target); However, I've run into an issue numerous times calling this method where due to timing or whatever, the form handle on the form doesn't exist, causing a Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created error. In frustration, I jokingly changed the code to: MainForm.Invoke(Target); where MainForm is the main window of the application (the form handle for the main form is created at startup and remains active for the entire life cycle of the application). I ran all the tests and manually tested the application and everything seems to work fine despite the fact that this is used everywhere. So my question is, what exactly is the meaning of invoking against a specific control? Is there any downside to just always invoking against a control you know will be active? If not, why does .NET have you invoke against a control in the first place (instead of just creating a static GuiThread.InvokeOnGuiThread(Blah);)?

We have a set of tables and views that merely store some config data for embedded devices. this schema is change-prone and do not really required lots of logic, beyond some validation rules. so we considered using a RAD tool for maintaining these CRUDS. In first stage: Dynamic Data But the community size, books absence and the last modification dates of the MSDN articles (~July 2008) makes me want to hear your experiences. (actually DynamicData comes as a part of the ASP.Net MVC2 project) What has been your experience with Dynamic Data? And... What is your favorite ASP.Net RAD alternative? Why?   • Best practices for fixed-width processing in .NET

    I'm working a .NET web service that will be processing a text file with a relatively long, multilevel record format. Each record in the file represents a different entity; the record contains multiple sub-types. (The same record format is currently being processed by a COBOL job, if that gives you a better picture of what we're looking at). I've created a class structure (a DATA DIVISION if you will) to hold the input data. My question is, what best practices have you found for processing large, complex fixed-width files in .NET? My general approach will be to read the entire line into a string and then parse the data from the string into the classes I've created. But I'm not sure whether I'll get better results working with the characters in the string as an array, or with the string itself. I guess that's the specific question, string vs. char[], but I would appreciate any other pointers anyone has. Thanks.

  • NLog not logging messages on XP SP3 with .NET 3.5 Client Profile

    I'm writing a program that is targeting the .NET 3.5 Client Profile and using NLog. I configure my logger programmatically on start up (no config file.) It works perfectly on Vista and Windows 7, but when running on a fresh install of XP SP3 with the .NET Client Profile installed, it will not log any of the variables in the layout string. For example, with the layout string set to: target.Layout = "MESSAGE: ${longdate}|${level}|${message}"; It will log "MESSAGE: | | |" Again, this only happens on XP SP3, and the logger is set to throw exceptions. Any ideas what may be causing this?

  • How can I exceed the 60% Memory Limit of IIS7 in ASP.NET Caching application

    Pardon if this is more serverfault vs. stackoverflow. It seems to be on the border. We have an application that caches a large amount of product data for an e-commerce application using ASP.NET caching. This is a dictionary object with 65K elements, and our calculations put the object's size at ~10GB. Problem: The amount of memory the object consumes seems to be far in excess of our 10GB calculation. BIGGEST CONCERN: We can't seem to use over 60% of the 32GB in the server. What we've tried so far: In machine.config/system.web (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): processModel autoConfig="true" memoryLimit="80" In web.config/system.web/caching/cache (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): privateBytesLimit = "20000000000" (and 0, the default of course) percentagePhysicalMemoryUsedLimit = "90" Environment: Windows 2008R2 x64 32GB RAM IIS7 Nothing seems to allow us to exceed the 60% value.     I'll be writing a small desktop app for a client that has WinXP machines and they won't be installing the .NET framework (at least not for me). So my choices are limited to either C++ or VB6, neither of which sound great. I remember reading back in the day that Mono came up with a static compiler, but recently the only thing I could find is Miguel de Icaza's entry on static compilation for a game engine for the purposes of running the app on the iPhone - not what I had in mind. Are there any products out there, free or commercial that will allow me to statically compile my .net 3.5 winform app? Thanks

    hi, I just started working with ASP.Net MVC 2. I created a new ASP.Net MVC application and created one vehicle controler with a database table connected with LINQ. Then created forms authentication mechanism for the application and tried to use the uri instead of cookies it was working smoothly but when i submit the form by creating a "Create" view from the controler using the utility it just dont work.   • Upload large files in .NET

    I've done a good bit of research to find an upload component for .NET that I can use to upload large files, has a progress bar, and can resume the upload of large files. I've come across some components like AjaxUploader, SlickUpload, and PowUpload, to name a few. Each of these options cost money and only PowUpload does the resumable upload, but it does it with a java applet. I'm willing to pay for a component that does those things well, but if I could write it myself that would be best. I have two questions: Is it possible to resume a file upload on the client without using flash/java/Silverlight? Does anyone have some code or a link to an article that explains how to write a .NET HTTPHandler that will allow streaming upload and an ajax progress bar?   • No styles / images on asp.Net MVC 2 application

    Greetings i have a little problem with my ASP MVC application. On my local development server everything works just fine but when i try to publish the application to an IIS 7.0 server it just displays plain pages without any styles / markups / images. I put all those things in the /Content/ subfolder but when i try to access that folder on the production server it just returns me a 404 not found error. I set the IIS server up with .Net 4.0 and followed the deployment guide on here: http://www.asp.net/learn/mvc/tutorial-08-cs.aspx All views / controllers / classes seem to work just fine, the only thing which does not is the content subfolder and i cant see why. Anyone got a suggestion what i could have overlooked or does anyone know that problem?

  • Cost of using ASP.NET

    One thing that I keep hearing in reference to ASP.NET and MSFT technologies is that they cost money to use. Often when they are being compared to open source languages someone will mention that one factor in favor of open source is that it's free (to an extent). My question is, when does ASP.NET actually cost money to use in terms of using the proprietary technology? Understandably there are the hosting fees, but I'm curious about the fees outside of these hosting fees. I'm especially curious about this as it relates one-person smaller-site development (non-team/large enterprise). Any help is appreciated. (edits) Some excellent answers. Much appreciated The projects that I'm looking to use the technologies for would be personal sites and very small business sites (1 or 2). The intent would of course be that these projects get much bigger. It seems that for commercial production, fees will apply. What about just basic dynamic "shared hosting" sites that provide information?

  • Logoff button IIS6 ASP.NET Basic Authentication

    I have a requirement for an explicit logout button for users in a ASP.NET web app. I am using IIS6 with Basic Authentication (SSL). I can redirect to another web page but the browser keeps the session alive. I have googled around and found a way to do it by enabling an active x control to communicate with IIS and kill the session. I am in a restricted environment that does not allow forms authentication and active x controls are not forbidden as well. Has anyone else had this requirement and how have you handled it? Okay that is what I was afraid of. I have seen similar answers on the net and I was hoping someone would have a way of doing it. Thanks for your time though. I guess I can use javascript to prevent the back button like the history.back()

  • Best practices for organizing .NET P/Invoke code to Win32 APIs

    I am refactoring a large and complicated code base in .NET that makes heavy use of P/Invoke to Win32 APIs. The structure of the project is not the greatest and I am finding DllImport statements all over the place, very often duplicated for the same function, and also declared in a variety of ways: The import directives and methods are sometimes declared as public, sometimes private, sometimes as static and sometimes as instance methods. My worry is that refactoring may have unintended consequences but this might be unavoidable. Are there documented best practices I can follow that can help me out? My instict is to organize a static/shared Win32 P/Invoke API class that lists all of these methods and associated constants in one file... (The code base is made up of over 20 projects with a lot of windows message passing and cross-thread calls. It's also a VB.NET project upgraded from VB6 if that makes a difference.)

  • Debugging ASP.NET Strings Downloaded to Browser

    I'm downloading a vCard to the browser using Response.Write to output .NET strings with special accented characters. Mime type is text/x-vcard and French characters are appearing wrong in Outlook, for example Montréal;Québec .NET string shows as Montréal Québec in browser. I'm using this vCard code from CodeProject.com I've played with the System.Encoding sample code at the bottom of this linked MSDN page to convert the unicode string into bytes and then write the ascii bytes but then I get Montr?al Qu?bec (progress but not a win). Also I've tried setting content type to both us-ascii and utf-8 of the response. Apparently the vcard file downloads as unicode. If I save it as ASCII text and open in Outlook it's okay. So my assumption is I need to cause download of ASCII but am unsure if I'm doing it wrong or have a misunderstanding of where to start.

    OK... My managed .Net program is eating memory leading it to crash after a few hours with a OutOfMemoryException. I want to investigate this starting with using perfmon.exe. I found a description on how to do this here However, I have a dutch Vista and the terms used differ widely from the ones used in this blog and I find myself simply unable to set it up. Can someone point me the way by stating "first from the top,second from the left" how to set up a performance monitor for my .Net program?
