• Ubuntu 8.10 and Ubuntu 9.10 in dual boot ?

  Hi Is it possible to have Ubuntu 8.10 as second (or third) boot with Ubuntu 9.10 as first boot ? I have not been able to get it to work, may be issues with Grub. PS : Don't ask me why I want this sort of dual boot, long story !

  I'm trying to generate a username using a single name field in excel which has the person's first name and last name. I'm open to what the username would be, as long as its intuitive for the user. The name fields can be tricky, as the data looks like this: Albert Abongo (2 names) Stephen Michael Essuah Ackah (4 names) Alhaji Iddrisu Abdul-KArim (3 names) I guess my ideal usernames for these people would be aabongo sackah aabdul-karim

• Why does CPU processing time matter when compared to real wall clock time?

  I am running the command time 7zr a -mx=9 sample.7z sample.log to gauge how long it takes to compress a file larger than 1GB. The results I get are as follows. real 10m40.156s user 17m38.862s sys 0m5.944s I have a basic understanding of the difference but don't understand how this plays a role in the time in takes to compress the file. For example should I be looking at real or user + sys?

I used to put my previous notebook (running windows 7) to hibernate directly in order to save battery but I can't do the same in Mac Os. From what I can tell Mac Os only hibernate a notebook when battery dies after a long sleeping period. Is that a way to manually put a Macbook to hibernate?

  How can I limit the time spent on the computer or force a log out from a Windows 7 machine? I used to use Windows Steady State to limit users (kids) from being on too long but SteadyState does not work with Windows 7 Home Premium and is discontinued. Is there a way to set this up in Windows 7 where it will kick off a user after a set time? Or perhaps there's an alternative program that can help limit the time one user is at the computer.

Most of the time it works, but sometimes there is a long delay before the mail arrives (often when another similar script is run).   I am running some php installation script from a browser and it's been running for a quite long time. Is there a way to check if it is still running on a server or timed out already? The browser is still showing loading spinner, but it is not a reliable progress indicator I suppose. (Apache webserver under Linux)

  Clients that have been reporting their state fine suddenly start reporting "Windows 0.0" for their OS and "Not yet contacted" for their Last Contacted date even though previously these values were present and correct.   I have 4 VMs on a Linux host, call them A, B, C, D running on Z. I really don't care when A and B come up, but I would like to make sure that D comes up before C. I believe that in VMWare 2.x it's possible to change the boot order. Is this possible in 1.x as well? Is this done in /etc/vmware/vm-list? I see that there are a number of VMs listed there, including some that have long since been deleted.

  As long as my tables were less than 100, MySQL performed reasonably well but when they started to grow to more than a few hundreds, it (MYSQL) has become extremely slow. Now my tables are 1k and are very small and most contain less than 20-30 records. Is there a specific MySQL setting which I should consider, in order for MySQL to perform better with large numbers of tables?

  Every day we have a long running catalog backup process, and I found there is no way to restore a file during the backup. So, Bacula is designed to block the restore while back is running? I'm using a disk backup, I couldn't understand why I can't restore file from early written volumes as the back process is not supposed to writing on the same volume file.
