  • New SSD freezing on older motherboard (intel G31)

    I have an ECS G31T-M motherboard running a Core2 Quad processor, 4gb RAM, Windows 7 32bit, Geforce 9600GT. Bought a Sandisk Extreme III 120GB (SDSSDX-120G-G25) and installed today. I'm outputting this from my 9600GT with included TV-out adapter to Component video (to my HDTV). This motherboard is SATA 2 and from what I can tell, SSDs run on the IDE controller and there is nothing fancy to set up advanced features of SSDs. I've noticed on other forums (but not verifying with ECS) this board does not support AHCI. I have two versions of Windows 7 installed on two drives, the SSD and an old 500G disc drive. When booted from my older 500G HDD, video plays fine on the HDTV. When booting the SSD windows 7 install, I am freezing constantly, as in, video plays OK for a minute, then picture freezes for 1-3 minutes (sometimes as audio continues playing) and returns for 20-30 seconds before doing the same thing again. Other tasks such as basic maneuvering through file folders seems to be no problem. Please help!! Do I need a new system for this thing to work, or could there be other fixes? I updated firmware to R201 to no avail. DJM

    Passmark shows many varieties of Core i3, i5, and i7 cpus. Some of them, even at similar prices, are much faster than others. But Dell only offers a few options, and they're not the fast ones. For example, Dell offers the Core i5 650 (benchmark), which costs $220, and doesn't come close to the performance of the Core i3-2100 (benchmark), which costs $120. Does anyone sell systems with the faster, cheaper chips?

  • Google Chrome doesn't respond user actions correctly

    Recently I've changed my OS to Ubuntu 12.04 (Cinnamon, 64 bits) from Mint 13 (KDE, 64 bits) and one same bug still appears on new installation. The Google Chrome it seems that don't refresh (repaint) page based on my interactions. Example: When i'm try comment an Youtube vídeo, when i click on textarea, o cursor don't appear inside of textarea, BUT, when/if i change to another tab and return the cursor appears...OK... If i start write some text...according i'm typing the chars don't appers...again if i change to another tab and return the typed text appears on textarea. Other cases that this bug appears: Modal boxes link...don't show the modal; Forms inside modal boxes don't show typed chars; The common Discus comment plugin don't work when focused; I don't have any idea of reason of this bug. (video driver, window manager, Chrome bug ?, i don't know) Any idea to solve this ?   • Idle state detection for server

    Windows OS has a service that detects idle state. Details: Task Idle Conditions The computer is considered idle if all the processors and all the disks were idle for more than 90% of the past 15 minutes and if there is no keyboard or mouse input during this period of time. When the Task Scheduler service detects that the computer is idle, the service only waits for user input to mark the end of the idle state. It is very useful for usual PCs that have keyboard amd mouse. We can use standard task scheduler to start some process like defrag when PC in idle state and stop when PC isn't in idle state. But what should we use when we using a standalone server without keyboard and mouse? Server sometimes receives commands by TCP/IP and starts CPU and HDD activity. But sometimes CPU and HDD activity at zero level. I would like to use this periods of time to start defrag or another process. But this started at "idle" state processes should be terminated when another commands will appear. So, standard idle state conditions cant help me because we have not got user input to stop idle state. I need more customizable idle state detector. Automatically started processes shouldn't influence to idle state, but PC should go away from idle state when another process will apperar. What should I use? Maybe exists some advansed task scheduler? Or I should write some useful utility on C#? I hope that it is a standard task and all useful utilities already compiled :)

  • Skip all warning prompts on ACPI shutdown?

    When I issue an ACPI shutdown command to a Windows XP guest machine from the host VM server, I want Windows to shutdown. The problem is, Windows always wants to ask some question or another, rather than just shutting down. I need shutdown to be reliable, no matter what is running or going on, so I can automate shutdowns from the host machine. But I want it to be as graceful as possible, rather than just pulling the plug. Some problems: If a user is logged in, ACPI shutdown causes a box to appear that says, "are you sure you want to shutdown while other users are logged in"? And this prevents shutdown until someone connects to the machine and clicks "yes". In this case, it should try its best to gracefully log out all users, using force if necessary, and then shutdown without promoting. Busy or non-responding programs or programs asking to save data can prevent Windows from shutting down until a user answers a prompt. This should attempt to save data, wait maybe 30 seconds for non-responding programs, but should get aggressive with stubborn programs. "nope, time's up! 3,2,1, Goodbye!" Is there a registry setting that I can change from: ACPI_Shutdown: "Shut down if Windows feels like it" to ACPI_Shutdown: "Just do it. Kill programs, bump users, try to be graceful about it, but when I come back, I expect you to be off." This should respond to the ACPI shutdown command, and not be a script on windows, unless that script is triggered by the ACPI power button. I'm hoping this can be changed with registry options.

    i have an external hard drive that i have set to Drive F which on it contains some programs that i have shortcuts on the desktop how i have a second external hard drive which i store my music on which is auto assigned to Drive E, due to someone thinking that Australians love to have f** wings on power plugs for hard drives while power boards have each socket close together i can have both of these hard drives set at the same time my music hard drive i normally only plug up when i sync music to my ipod but on occasion when i unplug my music hard drive and plug my old one back in or at times when i turn on my computer with the music hard drive in, turn off my computer and turn it back on with my old hard drive it's drive letter gets switched to E i get annoyed having to always go into disk management and change the drive letter back to F when this happens so i am wondering if I can lock my hard drive to always be F, if anything else tries to be F it can fail for all i care If there is a batch file i can use that'll go though all the steps of Disk Management to change a drive's letter, that way i can set it up in the startup folder

    Cheers! I dislike disobedience from my system. When I want to explicitly kill Nautilus with kill or killall, I am no longer able to do so. Previously I could disable this erroneous behavior (which even Windows do not exhibit!) through gnome-session-properties, however, it is no longer possible to set the "restart style" there (or whatever it was called). What is nowadays the correct way to disable nautilus autorestart under gnome? Reasons: I'm writing a piece of software that's painting directly into X11 root window. Nautilus is interfering. Compiz has a wallpapers plugin which Nautilus is painting over.

  • Enable automatic driver install in Windows XP

    When Windows detects new hardware (be it graphic card or USB Peripheral) it automatically installs driver and if it can't find a driver it shows "Found New hardware wizard" that allows you to manually select a driver. My problem is that this "Found New hardware wizard" shows up every time when I plug a new device and I have to click Next Next Next.. until it finishes installation. It's just like in Windows 98 ;) I want to fix it to the way it's supposed to be. It's got nothing to do with "Windows Update" and "Driver Signing" settings in "System properties - Hardware" tab, those are on default settings. Here is the same problem I have, but those replies ale completely useless

    If a wireless modem router has the option Allow multicast from Broadband Network, what does this mean exactly? What risks are there to leaving it enabled and why would you have it enabled? I understand that a broadcast is sending a packet to every device on the network and a multicast is send a packet to a specified set of addresses. A multicast packet can cross routers whereas a broadcast cannot although I don't quite understand how these "set of addresses are specified"

  • Installing a bundle for TextMate

    I've downloaded the 30 day trial version of TextMate and wanted to use a plugin for coffeescript. The instructions for installing the plugin say to go to this directory cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/TextMate/Bundles (Textmate 1) Once I changed into the TextMate directory and started looking for Bundles by doing ls it only showed TextMate.pid In other words, no Bundles directory.... Once I was in the Bundles directory, I'm supposed to do git clone git://github.com/jashkenas/coffee-script-tmbundle CoffeeScriptBundle.tmbundle but didn't want to try that without first being in the Bundles directory.

Also is this free software or does it require a separate licence? It sounds like it would be a useful tool for diagnosing Mac problems. The Apple Service Diagnostic application is designed to run both EFI and Mac OS X tests from an external USB hard drive. Apple Service Diagnostic (EFI) runs low-level tests of the hardware directly and does not require Mac OS X, while Apple Service Diagnostic (OS) uses Mac OS X to run tests. Booting and Using the Apple Service Diagnostic Application - Before using Apple Service Diagnostic, disconnect any Ethernet network, USB, and audio cables. - With the USB hard drive containing ASD 3S123 plugged into a USB port, restart the computer and hold down the option key as the computer boots up into the Startup Manager. To run ASD (EFI) select the "ASD EFI 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. To run ASD (OS) select the "ASD OS 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. ASD (EFI) will load in 20-30 seconds; ASD (OS) will load in 2-3 minutes. - After running ASD (OS) or ASD (EFI), press the Restart button to restart the computer back into the normal startup volume, or hold down the option key to get back to the Startup Manager. ASD is no longer delivered as an image to be restored onto a DVD. ASD 3S117 and newer versions requires installation onto an external USB hard drive.   • MacPorts pHash not showing up in Python

    I am having a problem where python does not show pHash installed even though I installed it using macports. I made sure I am using the MacPorts version of Python by doing: sudo port select --set python python27 I then installed pHash by doing: sudo port install pHash. It installed without any errors. When I call help('modules'), I do not see pHash listed among the installed packages. Any ideas on why python is not seeing the pHash install by MacPorts?   • Macbook pro asks me to "Service Battery"

    A couple of weeks ago I checked the battery and at that point in time (after 160 load cycles) it still had a capacity of 5000 mAh. Today, my 2006 macbook pro tells me via the battery menu to "Service Battery". According to Coconut Battery the current capacity is only 1590 mAh. The corresponding help text suggests contacting an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) to have the computer checked. Before I decide to throw money at the AASP I'd like to understand what the AASP could possibly do to eliminate the problem. Isn't it more likely that the battery simply broke at 160 cycles and needs to be replaced? Are there any means by software or firmware to influence battery behavior? Of course, the computer hardware might be broken but how could this result in the described effect? And yes, I'm currently trying a calibration cycle but I have some doubts that it will save the day.

  • Is email encryption practical enough?

    All emails I have ever sent were sent as plain text. Like postcards, everybody on the way to the addressee could easily read and store them. This worries me. I know privacy is something of the past, but encrypting email is possible, at least in theory. However, I wonder whether it is practical enough. Is there anybody who has experience with email security? Is it easy to set up? And can you still send and receive email from all you friends and acquaintances?

  • Using mixed disks and OpenFiler to create RAID storage

    I need to improve my home storage to add some resilience. I currently have four disks, as follows: D0: 500Gb (System, Boot) D1: 1Tb D2: 500Gb D3: 250Gb There's a mix of partitions on there, so it's not JBOD, but data is pretty spread out and not redundant. As this is my primary PC and I don't want to give up the entire OS to storage, my plan is to use OpenFiler in a VM to create a virtual SAN. I will also use Windows Software RAID to mirror the OS. Partitions will be created as follows: D0 P1: 100Mb: System-Reserved Boot D0 P2: 50Gb: Virtual Machine VMDKs for OS D0 P3: 350Gb: Data D1 P1: 100Mb: System-Reserved Boot D1 P2: 50Gb: Virtual Machine VMDKs for OS D1 P3: 800Gb: Data D2 P1: 450Gb: Data D3 P1: 200Gb: Data This will result in: Mirrored boot partition Mirrored Operating system Mirrored Virtual machine O/S disks Four partitions for data In the four data partitions I will create several large VMDK files, which I will "mount" into OpenFiler as block-storage devices, combined into three RAID arrays (due to the differing disk sizes) In effect, I'll end up with the following usable partitions SYSTEM 100Mb the small boot partition created by the Windows 7 installer (RAID-1) HOST 50Gb the Windows 7 partition (RAID-1) GUESTS 50Gb Virtual machine Guest VMDK's (RAID-1) VG1 900Gb Volume group consisting of a RAID-5 and two RAID-1 VG2 300Gb Volume group consisting of a single disk On VG1 I can dynamically assign storage for my media, photographs, documents, whatever, and it will be safe. On VG2 I can dynamically assign storage for my data that is not critical, and easily recoverable, as it is not safe. Are there any particular 'gotchas' when implementing a virtual OpenFiler like this? Is the recovery process for a failing disk going to be very problematic? Thanks.

    On Linux you can create any layout you wish by editing the appropriate ASCII configuration files. On Windows the keyboard layout definitions are binary. Is there any tool that can create these binary keyboard layout configuration files? I grew up on the Macintosh international keyboard layout, which used the option key extensively, and now I would like to use the same layout on Windows. On Linux this Mac international keyboard layout exists for both the console as well as for X.Org. On Windows, the most similar layout is US International, which is not the same.

  • Chmod 644 on /etc/ any way to fix?

    I tried to tab complete something and I guess it wasnt there. I know you are not supposed to set the permissions to /etc/ like that, but my permissions seem to be all messed up. whoami prints out cannot find name for user ID 1002 and I cannot cd into /etc/ anymore. passwd and shadow use 640 and 644 so I am not sure why this is a problem. Regardless, is there any way to fix this?     I have been trying to open Google Chrome from command line but with no luck! I have tried How do I start Chrome using a specified "user profile"? My goal is to open Google Chrome with a specific profile such as "profile 1", "profile 2", or "Default" from the command line, using bash to be specific, on my Mac. UPDATE: 6/3/14 Got this to work BUT only works when opening chrome for the first time open -a Google\ Chrome --args --"profile-directory"="Profile 1" So How do you get --args to be accepted AFTER google chrome as already been launched??
