• Clean thermal paste from inside CPU

  I bought an used CPU (Intel "Core 2" E4700) on eBay. And it came dirty inside with something that seems it´s thermal paste. Before I send it back, I wonder if it could it still work without cleaning this dirt. The seller supposedly "tested" it to be fully working. Final, is there a way to clean this dirt without damaging the CPU? Or, is it too risky (or too much work) to do so? This is the CPU:

• Prevent important OS X process being swapped out, without code change?

  I want hotkey-based utilities like Quicksilver or Zooom to respond immediately. But if they have been idle for a while, they (I guess) get swapped out, and respond slowly, sometimes not even responding to the first few keystrokes I wanted to send to them. How can I encourage such processes (i.e. chosen processes, not all processes system wide) to remain in active memory? Or, am I misunderstanding the problem?

  I'm trying to get a Curl Response from an outside server, however I noticed I cant neither PING the server in question nor connect to it. • Running IE on OSX with WineBottler: Can't find wine?

  So I want to run IE7 on OSX 10.6 with WineBottler. I saw it was possible to run IE on Mac with WineBottler, following these instructions. I installed WineBottler and IE7. All was looking good. However, when I tried to open IE7 from the Applications menu, I got an error message: "Can't find Wine. Wine is required to run this program." I then installed wine-devel from macports (which was a bit fiddly as I hit this problem and had to update a lot of dependencies, but it did eventually build). However, even after doing that, I'm still seeing the 'Can't find wine' error message whenever I try to open IE7 or WineBottler. Could anyone advise? Do I need to start wine running somehow?

• OS X mouse pointer speed varies with different mouse

  OS X Snow Leopard It seems that when using different mice on OS X may have different pointer speed and scrolling speed. For example, when using my Logitech basic laser mouse, the pointer speed is like normal. But when using MX Performance or Anywhere, it's very slow, I will have to adjust the pointer speed in mouse configuration to max. Even with max, it's still a bit slow. Basically, just feel the plug and play on OS X is terrible. I need re-adapt to it every single time. This is not the case on Windows OS. Also, the mouse scrolling speed varies with different mouse too. But usually they are all very slow, usually scroll 1 line at a time. If I adjust it in mouse configuration, it turns to scroll too much lines. I have Logitech official mouse driver (LCC) installed. But either tuning in LCC or mouse configuration doesn't make things better. Has anyone have similar issue? How to resolve it? Please advise, thanks.

  So, I'm looking for a new laptop (http://superuser.com/questions/116869/toshiba-satellite-u500-totally-damaged-lcd). My requirements for a new Laptop are: -good keyboard(illuminated) and touchpad (multi-media keys included, should be better than toshiba u500) -good graphics card, with system rating of 6.3 and up for gaming graphics (my Toshiba U500 has 6.3). I used to run some heavy games on my Toshiba U500 with ATI Mobility Radeon 4570 with 512 mb VRAM but the framerates are not that nice on high settings. -Decent CPU but I think all new Core i3, i5, i7 can run most of recent resource intensive games (My Toshiba U500 has a Core 2 Duo T6500, 2.13 Ghz) I'm also looking for a long-term reliability, good sound quality, lots of fast RAM of-course(4GB DDR3 - 1066Mhz and up) and a clear looking LED screen with a decent resolution. (I can accomodate a laptop with screen size of 13-inch upto 15.6 inch, and I don't want it to be heavy because I might be taking it outdoors) I'm actually impressed when I saw HP Pavilion DV6t but the screen resolution seems to be a little too small for 15.6 inch. The Pavilion DV3 are also good but I want to know if there other options. Looking for some opinions.. Thanks. :D

• OSX 10.8 Corrupted User Account Using Launchctl

  I used the following command: launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.notificationcenterui.plist in an attempt to disable notification center. I'm not sure that I got all of the commands right and appear to have corrupted the account that I executed it from - I get a grey screen when I try to login on that account. Fortunately I have another account on the machine with admin privileges so I can still use the machine. I would however like to restore the account to a working condition preferably without having to resort to a complete system restore from my time machine backup. Is there a way of diagnosing the current status of this launchagent and returning it to its original state?

• Restore Default OSX Home Folder Icons

  I want to keep folders such as Pictures and Documents in my home folder in sync between computers; at the moment, I'm using Dropbox to do this. On Computer A I added a symlink to the folders in my home directory to the Dropbox folder. On Computer B I deleted the existing Pictures and Documents folders and replaced them with symlinks to the folders in the Dropbox folder. This works very well, except that in Finder I don't see the nice little icons that Lion has by default for folders of a particular kind. Is there any way to restore these?

• Launch synergy client on boot in Mac OS X

  I have a mac as a secondary machine at work. Currently I use synergy on my main machine to share its keyboard and mouse with the mac. I created a launch agent for my user to launch synergy when I log in, and that's working. However, this means I still have to pull out the mac's keyboard and mouse in order to log in.   I upgraded from Karmic Koala to Lucid Lynx beta, was working fine for a while (was even rebooting). But, after some time, it is not booting and i cant find a solution. I have tried installing the grub again, doesn't help. Well, the problem is all my settings, bookmarks and passwords are blocked in that partition. I cant find where the Chrome stores bookmarks in Ubuntu. Can you help me either getting my system rebooted or getting the bookmarks ? Thanks. p.s. I am currently on liveusb.

Clicking "back to overview" on the "Budget" page returns you to the "Dashboard" page The number under "starting balance" of the top right corner of "Budget" changes when you change cell C5 On "Budget", each cell in the first column of each table has a drop-down menu for text, which seems to come from the "Setup" page The background isn't just plain white, but when I try to format paint it onto a new sheet, nothing happens If you know how any of these effects are achieved, I'm definitely curious. • Pysdm has disabled my ability to write to my storage partition

  I have a dual boot setup with Windows 7 and Mint 13 Cinnamon. As well as their respective partitions I also have a large one (NTFS) for storing all my music, videos, documents etc. I downloaded pysdm as I was told it would enable me to configure Linux to auto-mount my storage partition. It has indeed been helpful in auto-mounting my storage. However, since installing it I can no longer write to the partition which makes 500GB of my hard drive utterly useless! I've tried to unselect the "Mount file system in read only mode" option, but the program keeps re-checking it after I close that window (and even when I click apply). Why is it doing this and how can I get it to recognise that I need to read AND write on that partition?

• Tooltips shadow stuck on desktop

  I tends to get this problem from time to time. The tooltips with a shadow appearing on top of everything. It's the shadow of the tooltips not disappearing after the tooltips disappear. The last one I had the tooltips was from the wifi connection list at the systray. This problem also happen to me on another computer. Both running Win7 with ATI gpu. I found this similar post Menu command stuck on screen but none of the solution helped. In fact the "Fade or slide tooltips into view" has been unchecked from the beginning. Ending task of "dwm.exe" also doesn't help. So far the only way to resolve this by restarting window. I can't post picture yet, so can't show any screenshot. Edit: Just tested a few more trick which doesn't work. 1. Turn of aero 2. Hibernate 3. Switch main display to external display and switch back. 4. Change resolution

• Program to print gCal or iCal calendars in a monthly one calendar per column format

  I'm moving my family off of using the low tech "Boynton Mom's Family Calendar" to schedule things but I'd like to be able to create a monthly printout of the calendar in the same "Boynton" format (I'm sure it has an official name). The format is kind-of like a spreadsheet where each row of the calendar is a different day of the month and there is a separate column for each person in the family. I have all our calendars on Google but they are also accessible from iCal on the Mac. Is there a Mac program that can get the data from gCal or iCal print out the calendars in the Boynton format?

• Moving domain and keeping IMAP email - Linux Evolution, Mac Mail

  This question is about keeping email during a server move, where the clients are Linux (me) and Mac (my wife) using IMAP. I receive email at [email protected] using a webmail service that my hosting company (1and1) provides. I read it via IMAP in evolution, so I should have copies of all the emails on my local machine. I have just moved mydomain.com from one type of account to another, and the hosting company don't move my existing email on the server when I do this - I assume they move my account to a different mailserver, and don't choose to provide a migration path for the email to move too (yes, this is annoying). Before migrating, I backed up Evolution (File - Backup settings) and did a spot-check in the evolution-backup.tar.gz file to be sure that my mail was in there. After migrating, I restored (File - Restore settings) and had hoped that I would see all my mail again. Unfortunately, Evolution just shows me new mail sent to the account, not the old mail. Is there a way to get the old mail back in the mailserver, or at least displaying in Evolution, as it was before the move? If not, can I read it in some convenient way, e.g. in Evolution offline or in a text file (then I can pick the mails I really want to keep and resend them to myself)? Also, I am about to do a similar move for my wife's domain, [email protected]. She reads her mail on a Mac using IMAP to Apple Mail. Is there anything I can do to make the move smooth for her? (I have backed up [her user]/Library/Mail already, but not sure what to do once the move is done.)

  I was stupid enough to compile sqlite3 from source and install it to /usr, overriding default library. • How do I disable other monitors while running games in Wine?

  My current setup is: * Dual GTS 250 video cards * 3 Monitors * Used nvidia-settings to run each monitor as a separate x session * This is all running on Linux Mint Debian Edition When running games (Starcraft II) in Wine via PlayOnLinux, I've found that the mouse does not get locked. I already tried various solutions littered across the web and none work so I'd rather just disable my other two monitors while playing. Does anyone know of a method where I can turn off my other two monitors (not my primary monitor) while running Wine and then turn then back on afterwards? I don't mind having to manually run a script before and after gaming. Thanks.

• Who should own the root folder of a drive?

  All partitions are NTFS. The system is Windows 7 Pro. It does not belong to a domain. I do use shared folders occasionally (both via the Homegroup and old school sharing). Should I set the owner to be Administrators or SYSTEM for a A) fixed drive? B) removable drive? C) Is it ok to make every object on the drive inherit the new ownership? I just realized that I had some messy settings because I turned UAC on for the first time in years and I am now getting some undesirable prompts. I already have permissions set properly and I am only concerned with ownership.

  Answer: Parts of the hard drive are corrupted. All of my user's code was checked in, so I'm just going to format the box. One of my users has an HP DV5-1235dx laptop running Windows Vista Professional x64. Last night, our WSUS server pushed out a few updates including "Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB960859)". When we try to boot the laptop today, a black screen with white text comes up displaying: xxx/169894 (something) Where xxx increments rapidly and something is some dll or registry key. Eventually that stops and the screen displays !! 0xc01a00d !! 35566/169894 (\Registry\Machine\COMPONENTS\DerivedDat...) No other computers that received this update are displaying the same error. So far I've tried running CHKDSK off of HBCD. It repaired a thing or two, but the computer still doesn't boot. I tried repairing the Windows install from the Vista CD, but I get a black screen with white text displaying something along the lines of: 0 No Emulation System Type 00 1 No Emulation System Type 00 Select one of the above Booting in Last Known Good Configuration doesn't work. Booting in Safe Mode freezes at Loading Windows Files [snip] Loaded: \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys Please wait... My next step is trying to boot Safe Mode with Command Prompt and try to run rstrui.exe. While I do that, does anybody have any guidance? Edit: Booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt will not work. See Booting in Safe Mode above. Edit 2: I managed to boot from the Vista DVD. I ran the system repair, and now I get a black screen with white text saying: !! 0xc0000034 !! 290/169894 (_0000000000000000.cdf-ms) Edit 3: I ran the system repair again, and it attempted to repair my hard drive. It failed.   On mac osx terminal, I installed many terminal programs while trying to install a programming library. Now I'm wondering how I delete them. I think some of them include pip, macports, vmenven (or something). I'm not sure what these programs are called but they all are called from the command line using something like "macports..." (so I'm calling them terminal programs). First, how do I tell what terminal programs are installed. Second, how do I delete them. And, to be through, where are the programs stored anyway?

  Afternoon all, I have four resources; a project manager, and three developers. The project manager can work anywhere from 9 to 5pm each day, but only for a total of 10 hours per week. It doesn't matter when he works, as long as he isn't over-allocated 10 hours per week. The developers on the other hand can only work up to 2 hours per day, for a total of 10 hours per week. If they work more than 2 hours in a day, they are over-allocated. How do I best configure Project to handle this kind of scheduling requirement?
