• GPL: does one line of GPLed code make program a "derived work"

  I've recently run into some argument with a person that claims to be a lawyer (I have my suspicions about this not being completely true, though). As far as I know, copying even one line of code from GPLed program into proprietary body of code requires you to release the whole thing under GPL, if you ever decide to publish the software and make it available to the public. The person in question claims that it is "absurd" (I know it is, but AFAIK that's how GPL works), it is "redefining the copyright", "GPL has no power to do that", and claiming that "one line of GPLed code makes you release the whole thing under GPL" is absurd. That contradicts the GPL FAQ. Can somebody clarify the situation? Am I right in assumption that copying even smallest subroutine from GPL program into your code automatically makes your program a "derived work" which means you are obliged to release it under GPL license if you publish it?

• *DX11, HLSL* - Colour as 4 floats or one UINT

  With the DX11 pipeline, would it be much quicker for the vertex buffer to pass one single UINT with one byte per channel to the input assembler, as opposed to three floats? Then the vertex shader would convert the four bytes to four floats, which I guess is the required colour format for the pipeline. In this instance, colour accuracy isn't an issue. The vertex buffer would need to be updated many times per frame, so using a single UINT and saving 12 bytes for every vertex could well be worth it: quicker uploads to vram and also less memory used. But the cost is the extra shader work for every vertex to convert each 8 bits of the input UNIT into a float. Anyone have an idea if it might be worth doing? Or, is it possible for the pipeline to be set to just internally use a four-byte colour format? The swap chain buffer has been initialised as DXGI_FORMAT_R8G8B8A8_UNORM, so ultimately that's how the colour will be written. Thanks!

  I have a bug in a Linux kernel module that causes the stock Ubuntu 14.04 kernel to oops (crash). That is why I want to edit/patch the source of only that single kernel module to add some extra debug output. The kernel module in question is mvsas and not necessary to boot. For that reason I don't see any need to update any initrd images. I have read a lot of information (as shown below) and find the setup and build process confusion. • Python C API return more than one value / object without building a tuple [migrated]

  I got the following problem. I have written a C-Extension to Python(2.7 / 3.2) to interface a self written software library. Unfortunately I need to return two values from the function where the last one is optional. In Python I tried def func(x,y): return x+y, x-y test = func(13,4) but test is a tuple. If I write test1,test2 = func(13,4) I got both values separated. Is there a possibility to return only one value without unpacking the tuple, i.e. the second(,.. third, ..fourth) value gets neglected? And if such a solution existst, how does it look for the C-API? Because return Py_BuildValue("ii",x+y,x-y); results in a tuple as well.

• sqlite3 timestamp (current_timestamp) one hour off

  I run a small crawler on a virtual ubuntu server, initiated by crontab hourly. Datetime is inserted by defaulting the date filed to TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP. Table creation looks like this: CREATE TABLE links (page TEXT, link TEXT, date TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, PRIMARY KEY(page,link)); The datetime gets stored fine, but it one hour off (one hour behind) Norwegian time (GMT +1). The server is located where-ever, I just need it to be on GMT+1. By typing datein the ssh session I get: Wed Dec 19 17:26:02 CET 2012 and that is correct (just now). So where does sqlite3 get it's time from? What must I do to set the time so that sqlite3 gets the time right?

• Challenge: Learn One New Thing Today

  Most of us know that there's a lot to learn. I'm teaching a class this morning, and even on the subject where I'm the "expert" (that word always makes me nervous!) I still have a lot to learn. To learn, sometimes I take a class, read a book, or carve out a large chunk of time so that I can fully grasp the subject. But since I've been working, I really don't have a lot of opportunities to do that. Like you, I'm really busy. So what I've been able to learn is to take just a few moments each day and learn something new about SQL Server. I thought I would share that process here. First, I started with an outline of the product. You can use Books Online, a college class syllabus, a training class outline, or a comprehensive book table of contents. Then I checked off the things I felt I knew a little about. Sure, I'll come back around to those, but I want to be as efficient as I can. I then trolled various checklists to see what I needed to know about the subjects I didn't have checked off. From there (I'm doing all this in a notepad, and then later in OneNote when that came out) I developed a block of text for that subject. Every time I ran across a book, article, web site or recording on that topic I wrote that reference down. Later I went back and quickly looked over those resources and tried to figure out how I could parcel it out - 10 minutes for this one, a free seminar (like the one I'm teaching today - ironic) takes 4 hours, a web site takes an hour to grok, that sort of thing.  Then all I did was figure out how much time each day I'll give to training. Sure, it literally may be ten minutes, but it adds up. One final thing - as I used something I learned, I came back and made notes in that topic. You learn to play the piano not just from a book, but by playing the piano, after all. If you don't use what you learn, you'll lose it. So if you're interested in getting better at SQL Server, and you're willing to do a little work, try out this method.   Hello everybody, I split my sd card into 2 partitions. When i use usb-card-reader to read my sd card, only the one partition shows up on the screen, the other doesn't. I have run the command "sudo fdisk -l" and the result is the same, only one partition is recognized. But i do believe both partitions of my sd card work fine, because i still can boot my single-board computer with that sd card and run some programms, which are inside that unreadable partition. How can i access both partitions of my sd card? Does anyone know how to solve this kind of problem? I really appreciate your help.

• Unable to sync files not located in the Ubuntu One folder

  I have the option to sync files in nautilus, however when the option is selected nothing happens. I am able to SLOWLY sync files in the Ubuntu One folder (unless in sub-folders), but only there. Why give the option if it does not work? This really is still beta, so to charge for this service is terrible. I am a little frustrated at the moment, I have tried all sorts; removing accounts to a fresh Ubuntu install! I am at a loss :-( Can anyone else sync files outside the Ubuntu One folder, if so how?   The Developer's Conference (TDC) kicked off Wednesday in São Paulo, Brazil. With over 3000 developers in attendance over five days, it is the premier multi-community developer conference in Brazil, organized by Globalcode.   I have a client who insists of having multiple website domains all being redirected to one main website domain. It is getting out of hand and his server has become conveluted and riddled with garbage because of it, not to mention confusing at times. Each of these domains that he is setting up has no content, they simply redirect the user to the main website domain. Is this practice of having multiple domains pointing to one main website common? And does anyone know where I can get information to give to this client to let him know this is a bad practice if it is a bad practice?

How do I go from one directory or file or whatever they are, to another and once I'm there what do I do to see what is in the download file. • Sharing one static ip for both ftp and www service

  Trying to figure out how to update the Zone record and configure webserver so that one application on the webserver is accessible by public. I'm completely not good at NS/DNS/NAT/firewall/routing/port forwarding/networking etc. "faraday" is the intranet name. Everyone within local network can access all applications hosted on "faraday". Hostname for webserver is "www", FTP server is "ftpserver". Both servers running RHEL4 OS. The goal is to allow anyone outside the company network (public) to access only one of the many applications on "faraday". Hope somebody can help me with some of the questions below, if not all. From zoneedit record, the static IP is used by FTP now. Can I use the same existing static IP - 219.95.10.100, for web service? Currently anyone who enter "http://www.abc.com.my" will be directed to "http://www.abc.com". I don't want this to change. Currently, no one else, except employee on local network, can access "faraday" web pages. How to configure so that when anyone type "http://thisapp.abc.com.my" on their web browser, the url will lead them to "http://faraday/thisapp" (application folder is /var/www/html/thisapp on RHEL4 web server). If possible, how to set the URL will continue to show "http://thisapp.abc.com.my" instead of "http://faraday/thisapp" How to limit/restrict user (those who are not from local network) so they only have access to "http://thisapp.abc.com.my", but not "http://faraday" or "http://faraday/anotherapp", etc. What's the configuration changes needed in /etc/httpd.conf on web server? Company domain name is "abc.com.my". Following is the zone records on www.zoneedit.com. • Multiple domain names with pages linking to one website

  Hello, I work for a company who have been redesigning their company website. I have been asked to register loads of domain names that contain the keywords that they want to use on the original site. Each of these domain names will contain a one page website with a destription of what the company offers and a link saying something along the lines of 'click here for more infmormation' which then takes you to the main site. The idea being the main site will then be recieving a lot of inbound links and hopefully rise in the google rankings, not to mention bring in more customers who have come to the site from all the other domain names who wouldn't have normally got to the website because it wasn't ranked on the first page. Is this a good idea or will Google see this as spam and penalise the main site for having loads of links to it from one page websites hosted on the same nameserver?   I have list of video files (loaded from database), each with start and end time of requested interval: # file begin end v1.mp4 1:01 2:01 v2.mp4 3:02 3:32 v3.mp4 2:03 5:23 And I need to create single video file containing these intervals: [0:00]---v1---[2:00]---v2---[2:30]---v3---[5:50] I preffer usig ffmpeg, since it is installed on server. Caller program is written in PHP. It is easy to cut one input to one output (argument escaping removed for clarity): exec("ffmpeg -ss $begin -i $input_file -ss $begin -c copy $output_file"); I there any easier way than executing ffmpeg for each interval and then execute it once more to concatenate prepared clips together? I really do not like to have a lot of temporary files or dealing with complex process handling.

• Does Agile (scrum) require one server environment?

  Is it necessary/recommend/best practice/any other positive to use only one server environment to perform all development, unit testing and QA? If so, is it then wise/part of Agile to then have only one staging environment before Live? Considering that this could mean internationally distributed teams of developers and testers in different time zones is this wise? This is something being implemented by our QA manager. The opinion put forward is that doing all the dev and testing on a single server is "Agile." The staging environment would be a second environment, and then live.

  I had read an interview with a great programmer (it is not in English) and in it he said that "a great programmer can be as 100 times as good as a mediocre one" giving reason for why good programmers are very well paid and why programming companies give many facilities for their employees. The idea was that there is a very large demand for good programmers, because of the above reason and that's why companies pay very much to bring them. Do you agree with this statement? Do you know any objective facts that could support it? Edit: The question has nothing to do with experience; if you talk about one great programmer with 1 year experience then s/he should be 10 times more productive than a mediocre programmer with 1 year experience. I agree that from certain experience years onwards, things start to dissipate but that's not the purpose of the question.

  This is my first games industry job and my task is to take out one major game component and put in a newer one. So far it's been 5 weeks, and I'm still just staring at errors. I think it could be months before it's at the point that it can compile. It's really getting me down. I'm just changing things over, I'm not really writing anything myself. it's just endless. I fix a thousand errors and nine thousand take their place. I'm sure this must be a common thing, so I was just wondering, how do you cope with this?
