• Cross browser (chrome/firefox) trying to get top-pos defined in percentage as pixels

  I have a problem whit cross browser output, I'm trying to get the top and left css attribute of a div, but firefox gives me the exact pixel position and Chrome give me the percentage. • Excel 2003 - ADDRESS() function issues

  I finally thought I had found a way to acutally use excel productively but the code that I followed does not appear to work. I'm thinking that the code is very limited and can't do what I want but I thought I'd ask to confirm - maybe it is my function that is the problem. I want to calculate the sum of a row of values for the previous month based on how many days we are into this month (i.e. It is the 20th of April so I want to sum the first 20 days of March to compare against.) =SUM(G4:ADDRESS(ROW(),7+$BR$3,4)) I basically want to SUM(G4:AA4) and have used the address function to return the cell reference AA4 by taking G4 and adding 20 to the column count. ADDRESS(ROW(),7+$BR$3,4) This successfully returns AA7 as expected HOWEVER, when I try to use the returning value in the SUM() function it throws an error... Am I not able to use this reference in my calculation?

  I‘d like to ask I question that here that I think would be easy to some people. Ok I have query that return records of two related tables. (One to many) In this query I have about 3 to 4 calculated fields that are based on the fields from the 2 tables. Now I want to have a group by clause for names and sum clause to sum the calculated fields but it ends up in error message saying: “You tried to execute a query that is not part of aggregate function” So I decided to just run the query without the totals *(ie no group by , sum etc,,,) : And then I created another query that totals my previous query. ( i.e. using group by clause for names and sum for calculated fields… no calculation here) This is fine ( I use to do this) but I don’t like having two queries just to get summary total. Is their any other way of doing this in the design view and create only one query?. I would very much appreciate. Thankyou: JM

• When to alter a function vs when to just write a new one...?

  /is n00b Through the gift of knowledge and expertise encoded here, I am doing my best to avoid n00b mistakes as I learn the basics of programming. I use functions when I (think I) can in PHP, and keep them somewhat sorted in different includes. The n00b problem I'm running into now is situations where perhaps 4/5th of an existing function is relevant to a new need. Maybe there are a slightly different set of inputs, or an additional calculation or two in the series, or output needs a different format/structure... but the core of the function is still applicable. Is there a good rule of thumb regarding when one should bolt-on crap to an original function and when one should (literally) copy & paste most of it into a new function and tweak to fit the situation? On the one hand I feel bad duping code, on the other I feel bad cluttering up an existing function with stuff not always needed...

• google maps v3 distance

  Trying to create a new version of the map functions seen here: http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm but using the v3 api. So far I am able to set markers on click and can draw the geodesic polyline. The issues I am currently running into are: Updating the poly-line on marker drag I'm pretty sure I have to put each marker in an array and do a for loop so that I can keep clicking and adding points that will add to the total distance. Properly displaying distance. I have created a jsfiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/wyZyS/ EDIT: I realize I have nothing calling the "update" function. I am trying to create the array for each marker currently. The calculation you see is converting meters to nautical miles.

• PHP Round function

  Is it possible to round a number where if it's 5 , just leave it , anything below 5 round down , anything above 5 round up? EX: 5 * 1.35 = 6.75 .... leave it 5.2 * 1.35 = 7.02 .... 7.00 5.5 * 1.35 = 7.56 .... 8.00 I've formatted with round($n,0, PHP_ROUND_HALF_UP) where $n is the product from the above calc , which leaves 6.75 but returns 7.02 for the next one. I also tried round($n,-1, PHP_ROUND_HALF_UP) which gives me the 7.00 on the second calc but then of course won't return a 6.75 for the first, instead it returns 680. This is a ticket markup calculation where the user enters the first number and is multiplied by the second. I actually remove the decimal because they don't want to see it, and they want this sort of customized rounding on the result. Thanks, Steve

  Hello, this jquery question: when I set a specific height to a "#div", i want to set the width of a inner object automatically too (cause i need a width to read it out) [ "#div" ["object"] ] example: (object).css(width: [ CALCULATION ], height: ($("#div").height())+'px' ) the original proportion of the image is: 1600x1080 here's the link to the attachment, take a look at it (tinypic): link text the heights "500px", "600px" and "700px" you can see in the attachment are just examples, the heigth could also be "711px", "623px", "998px" etc. cause the "#div" scales with the browser (i can read out the height of window, that works) my math skills aren't really good, would be great if someone could help me out :-)

  I am trying render a simple animation(object movement animations) on iphone. I used opengl for object rendering. Movements appears to be smooth on the simulator. But if I used same code in the ipod, object movement is slower. In the iphone it is still slower. I googled a bit and found 'frame rate independent rendering method', which taught me the concept of 'time interval' and object movement based on it. However result is very unpleasant. There is a lot of jerk in the animation even when fps remains above 20. Following code fragment is used for calculation of time interval between successive frames and I am using that to move my animation. For example, in Canada Victoria day (aka the May two-four weekend) is the Monday before May 25th, or Thanksgiving is the 2nd Monday of October (in Canada). How can this be prevented? I simply want to avoid showing the empty part of the plot- the ordinate from 0 to .2, but not drop the associated data from the stat_summary calculation.

• How do I detect a change of tab page in TabControl prior to SelectedIndexChanged event?

  I currently determine what page of a tabcontrol was clicked on via the SelectedIndexChanged event. I would like to detect before the selected index actually changes, for validation purposes. For example, a user clicks a tab page other than the one they are viewing. A dialog is presented if form data is unsaved and asks if it's ok to proceed. If the user clicks no, I'd like to remain on the current tab. Currently I have to remember the previous tab page and switch back to it after an answer of 'no.' I considered MouseDown (and the assorted calculation logic), but I doubt that's the best way. (This is in .NET C# 3.5)

The file takes data from the data logger and does some analysis on it and outputs one number regardless of the input size. • Trigger the change event of a textbox in jQuery

  I have an asp:TextBox with asp:RegularExpressionValidator to validate if it's a number. Obviously an onchange event will be attached to this textbox while rendering. But the .net js throws an error. I traced in the js: function ValidatorOnChange(event) { ... } and found that all of event.fromElement,event.toElement,event.srcElement are null which causes the exception. Did I do something wrong?   I need to produce the schedule of a sport-event. There are 30 teams. Each team has to play 8 matches. This means that it is not possible for each team to compete again all other teams, but I need to avoid that two team compete more than once against each other. My idea was to generate all possible matches (for 30 teams: (30*29)/2 = 435 matches) and select from this list 120 matches (8 match for each team: 8 * 30 / 2 = 120 matches). This is where I'm having a hard time: how can I select these 120 matches? I tried some simple solutions (take first match of the list, then the last, and so on) but they don't seem to work with 30 teams. I also tried to generate all possible match combination and find which one is working but with 30 team, this is too much calculation time. Is there an existing algorithm that I could implement?

Update There are some general-purpose tuples implementations described in the answers, but for tuples used as keys in dictionaries you should additionaly verify correct calculation of the hash code.   There seems to a quite a few grid computing frameworks out there, but which ones are actually being used to any great extent by the investment banks for purposes of low latency distributing calculation? I'd be interested to hear answers covering both windows,Linux and cross platform. Also, what RPC mechanisms seem to be favoured most? I've heard that for reason of low latency and speed, the calculations themselves are quite often written in C++/C as calculations running on VMs are several orders of magnitude slower than native code. Does this seem to be a common scenario in practice? e.g distributed .NET grid framework running calculations written in native c++/c?

• Return numerical array in python

  Okay..this is kind of an interesting question. I have a php form through which user enters values for x and y like this: X: [1,3,4] Y: [2,4,5] These values are stored into database as varchars. From there, these are called by a python program which is supposed to use them as numerical (numpy) arrays. However, these are called as plain strings, which means that calculation can not be performed over them. Is there a way to convert them into numerical arrays before processing or is there something else which is wrong? Helpp!!

  I have written two small scripts, First one maintains a dictionary of current stock prices for a set of securities. I am using recursion to listen to a named pipe. Whenever there is something available on the name pipe, it updates the security price and goes right back and start listening to the pipe. The second one periodically reads the stock price of some security from the price cache of the first program and performs come calculation. But I have no idea how to make these two programs communicate. I somehow need to make my second programs start the first program and let it run in the background and get the price whenever it needs it. Can someone point me in the right direction?
