• SharePoint - Summing Calculated Columns By Groups (DVWP)

  I had a problem… okay.. okay.. so I have many problems… but let’s focus on one in particular or this blog post would never end… okay? Thank you…. So, I had an electronic timesheet where users entered hours for each day of the week. It also had a “Week Total” column which was a calculated column of the sum. The calculated column looked like this: Pretty easy.. nothing spectacular. So, what’s the problem? WELL……………….. There is a row in the timesheet for each task a person worked on in a given week. So, if you worked on 4 tasks, you would have 4 rows of data, and 4 week totals for that week: This is all fine and dandy, but I want to know what the total was for the entire week. Yes.. I realize the answer is 24 from my example… I mean, I know how to add! I just want SharePoint to display it for me for the executives (we all know, they have math problems).  You may be thinking, hey genius (in a sarcastic tone of course), why don’t you just go to the view and total on the “Week Total” field. What a brilliant idea! Why didn’t I think of that… let’s go to the view and do just that…. Ohhhhhh… you can’t total on a Calculated Column.. it’s not even an option…  Yeah… I had the same moment. So, what do you do? Well… what do you think I did? 1) Googled “SharePoint total calculated column” 2) Said it couldn’t be done 3) Took a nap 4) Asked the question on twitter? The correct answer of course is number 4… followed by number 3… although I may have told my boss number 2 so that I look more brilliant than I am? It’s safe to say I did NOT try to find the solution on my own doing step 1… that would be just WAY to easy… So, anyway, I posted the question on Twitter and it turns out several people had suggestions from using jQuery to using DVWPs. I tend to be a big fan of the DVWP except for the disgusting process of deploying them to another farm.. ugh… just shoot me…. so, that is the solution I went with. Laura Rogers (@WonderLaura) has a super duper easy to follow video on the subject over at EndUserSharePoint.com: SharePoint: Displaying Calculated Column SUMS in a View (Screencast) Laura’s video was very easy to follow and was ALMOST exactly what I needed. She does a great job walking you through every step of summing up a calculated field which was PART of my problem. The other part was my list is grouped by date! So, I wanted to see for a given week, the summed “Week Total” of hours. Laura got me on the right track with her video and I dug a little deeper into the DVWP to accomplish my task. So, here are the steps you follow: 1. Click on the "chevron” (I didn’t know it was actually called that until I heard Laura say it).. I always call it the “little-button-in-the-top-right-corner-with-the-greater-than-sign”.. but “chevron” is much shorter. So, click on the chevron, click on “Sort and Group”. The Add the field you want to group by, in my example it is the “Monday Date” of the timesheet entry. Make sure to check the check boxes for “Show Group Header” AND “Show Group Footer”. Click “OK”. The view now shows the count of each grouped set of data: Interesting, this looks very similar to Laura’s video… right? So, let’s take a look at the code for the Count: Count : <xsl:value-of select="count($nodeset)" /> Wow, also very similar… except in Laura’s video it looks like: Count : <xsl:value-of select="count($Rows)" /> So.. the only difference is that instead of $Rows we have $nodeset. It turns out the $nodeset will go through each Row in the group just like $Rows goes through each row in the entire view. So, using the exact same logic as in Laura’s blog except replacing $Rows with $nodeset we get the functionality of being able to sum up the values for a group. So, I want to replace “Count: #” with the total hours, this is done using the following changes to the above code: Week Total : <xsl:value-of select="sum($nodeset/@Monday)+sum($nodeset/@Tuesday) +sum($nodeset/@Wednesday)+sum($nodeset/@Thursday)+sum($nodeset/@Friday) +sum($nodeset/@Saturday)+sum($nodeset/@Sunday)" /> Our final output has the summed hours for each group! So… long story short… follow Laura’s blog, then group your list, then replace “$Rows” with “$nodeset”. One caveat, this will not work if you group by a person field. For some reason the person field does not go through each row in the group. I haven’t dug into this much yet. Maybe if I find some time… whatever that is… Anyway, Laura did all the work, I just took it one small step forward… as always, feel free to leave any additional insights you may have. • Small hiccup with VMware Player after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04

  The upgrade process Finally, it was time to upgrade to a new LTS version of Ubuntu - 12.04 aka Precise Pangolin. I scheduled the weekend for this task and despite the nickname of Mauritius (Cyber Island) it took roughly 6 hours to download nearly 2.400 packages. No problem in general, as I have spare machines to work on, and it was weekend anyway. All went very smooth and only a few packages required manual attention due to local modifications in the configuration. With the new kernel 3.2.0-24 it was necessary to reboot the system and compared to the last upgrade, I got my graphical login as expected. Compilation of VMware Player 4.x fails A quick test on the installed applications, Firefox, Thunderbird, Chromium, Skype, CrossOver, etc. reveils that everything is fine in general. Firing up VMware Player displays the known kernel mod dialog that requires to compile the modules for the newly booted kernel. Usually, this isn't a big issue but this time I was confronted with the situation that vmnet didn't compile as expected ("Failed to compile module vmnet"). Luckily, this issue is already well-known, even though with "Failed to compile module vmmon" as general reason but nevertheless it was very easy and quick to find the solution to this problem. In VMware Communities there are several forum threads related to this topic and VMware provides the necessary patch file for Workstation 8.0.2 and Player 4.0.2. In case that you are still on Workstation 7.x or Player 3.x there is another patch file available. After download extract the file like so: tar -xzvf vmware802fixlinux320.tar.gz and run the patch script as super-user: sudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh This will alter the existing installation and source files of VMware Player on your machine. As last step, which isn't described in many other resources, you have to restart the vmware service, or for the heart-fainted, just reboot your system: sudo service vmware restart This will load the newly created kernel modules into your userspace, and after that VMware Player will start as usual. Summary Upgrading any derivate of Ubuntu, in my case Xubuntu, is quick and easy done but it might hold some surprises from time to time. Nonetheless, it is absolutely worthy to go for it. Currently, this patch for VMware is the only obstacle I had to face so far and my system feels and looks better than before. Happy upgrade! • Convert Custom Firefox Setup to Firefox Portable?

  I have a pretty awesome firefox set up and spent a lot of time getting it perfect. Is there any way that anyone knows about to convert the entire configuration to portable? Programs like MozBackup are great for backing up the complete set up, but you can't restore a Firefox profile to Firefox portable (maybe there is a workaround to fake it out? or possibly another method?) In case anyone is interested here is the gist of the best add-ons I've found: Autopager (scroll down google and other multi page results without clicking next) Coral IE Tab (IE in firefox - in case a website 'insists' that you use IE) Cyber search (search google straight from the address bar - VERY HELPFUL) Download StatusBar (display progress of downloads in the bottom of ff - no annoying popups FireFTP (erases need for an external FTP client - opens in a tab) Gmail manager (if you use multiple gmail accounts) Session Manager (saving multiple sessions of tabs - ff session recover) Surf Canyon (pull relevant stuff out of the depths of search results - even from craigslist Tab Mix Plus (ESSENTIAL - tab behavior customization - have multiple rows of tabs I also have it set up so you can type 'g test' in the address bar and ff will pull up the google results for 'test'. Similarly have it set up for guitar tabs (tab), facebook (f), wikipedia (w), google maps from my house (gmhome), torrents (tor), ticketmaster (t), rotten tomatoes (rt), craiglist (c) plus about 20 other sites.

• Automatic o/s reset on a dedicated internet browsing Windows 7 pc.

  I have just purchased a new Acer Revo nettop PC for dedicated internet browsing. It will be the only pc on a home network. My original plan was to install one virtual PC for family browsing, another for remote web based server administration and ban browser use from the host Windows 7 o/s. The idea was that I could recover to a fresh VHD image once a week to eliminate any build up of malware inside the browser VMs. However now I am looking for alternative solutions since the Intel Atom cpu does not have hardware VT support which Windows Virtual PC requires. Would it be possible to engineer some type of routine overnight host o/s wipe and recovery? I guess cyber cafes do something like this? The only user data that would need to be retained across a recovery would be browser bookmarks but these could be exported to remote service. Edit 1: I am thinking the o/s reset could be done via some disk image recovery process. Edit 2: Just had a brainwave. Routine browsing could be done via the new Google Chrome O/S. I have just seen a video of the Google Chrome o/s booting off a usb pen drive in seconds.

• Why is my router not routing?

  Starting a week and half ago my router stopped working with my cable modem. I went to sleep with it working and woke up with it not. I swapped in another router and am still having issues; I was gone for 10 days so now I'm back to trying to figure it out. While I was gone I left everything (cable modem, router, and computer) powered off. My setup: Comcast Ambit cable modem (from Comcast) Netgear WGR614 v4 router -- replaced with Linksys WRT54GS v1.1 Windows XP SP3 other computers, all currently unplugged The modem is using the firmware (ver 2.105.2001) provided by Comcast; hardware version 1.3 The Linksys router is using FW ver 4.71.4 (latest for this release of HW), factory defaults I am only using the wired connections; no wireless. I have swapped out all of the cat5 cable. If I plug my computer directly into the cable modem, I can ping by name or number. Everything works perfectly. If I plug my computer into the router and the router into the modem, I cannot access anything outside of my local network. This is the exact setup I've used for the past 5 years; there were no changes in the past year. Now here's the interesting part: I can log into the Linksys router and get status information from it; everything appears good. Using the Diagnostics, I can run ping and traceroute to any site on the internet. These work perfectly. From my computer, I can ping the router and the modem. However, I cannot ping anything on the internet by with name or number. If I plug in another computer, I can ping it successfully. I've included two transcripts below that show these two attempts. Addresses, DNS, gateways, etc. look good. I cannot access the internet through either router. I am at a loss here. Suggestions? Help! • Need a Company to Fix My Plesk & IIS on windows 2008 [SOLVED]

  Hello: I need to know a name of a company to fix my server install and get my sites running again. Windows 2008 IIS 7 Plesk 9.x The problem started when Level 2 of my hosting company adjusted a FTP users to have certain permissions....apparently he did this outside of plesk and it has been nothing but permission headaches all around. Connections....uploading files, etc. now somethings gone wrong where plesk isnt even loading properly and IIS too... I need to see if someone can fix this remotely before I give the green light to format and reinstall server, IIS, Plesk and Domains! looking to pay a company to get this working ASAP - This is not requested as a free job so I need someone good and who can fix it without the huge hassle of formatting and such. • LibreOffice Calc/Writer: How to get the dates for specifc weekdays per month?

  I'm stuck with a problem in LibreOffice Calc or Writer: I try to get a table of dates for every monday, wednesday and friday per month, something that I can load every new month wich sets the dates automatically so I just have to print the page on paper. :) In Writer the fieldcommand for date can't obviosly do the job (it only can be set to a fix date, the todays date or +offset as far as I can see). In Calc I tried it with the autofill but that obviosly works for the first 3 days only. I might add that I'm lost with Excel/calc formulars... Any help?

  My client sends out eblasts at 8am monday/wed/friday. Between 8:15-8:45 the site becomes extremely slow and many users sessions timeout. My setup: Mediatemple VE 2gb dedicated ram (3 burst) Ubuntu 9.10 Apache2-mpm-worker PHP5.3-fcgi MySQL 5 I recently tried to remedy the problem by switching from apache2-mpm-prefork to mpm-worker, but am still having the same issues. Maybe it is an error with the PHP settings, or bandwidth per unit time, or the site outgrew the server? Any suggestions would be very helpful - as you can see i've given it a good go before looking for help (installed mpm-worker). Also, can anyone suggest to me some free load testing software, or a tutorial on mod_status? Thank you

  Extract data from specific range of cells(always the same cells) in multiple worksheet in multiple files. 1 file=1 day. I have 6 technicians each day of the week, Monday thru Friday. So, 5 files with 6 worksheets. I have entered specific info in specific cells of every work sheet. The range is constant(the same address in EVERY worksheet in every file.) So, I need a formula to extract and calculate the data in the given range and dump it into another spreadsheet. I can forward an example a file if it will help anyone to answer my question. • Windows data backups with alternating removable drives?

  0 vote down star I have a removable disk drive (RD1000 from Dell), and I am looking for backup software that will allow me to backup every night, and every morning switch to the alternate disk. There is only one directory structure to back up, what I want is two copies, one which I will take home with me every night, one which will be backing up every night, and when I get in in the morning, I will switch them. So for instance I have disk "a" and disk "b". On Monday night I want to go home with disk "a" and leave disk "b" in the drive, so that a scheduled back up will be written to it. On Tuesday morning I will come in and swap disks, and I will take "b" home that night, leaving "a" for the backup. And so on for the remainder of the week. FOSS software preferred, Freeware acceptable, paid software as a last-ditch effort. Oh, btw I'm stuck with Windows 2000 Thanks in advance.

  Some time ago, I bought my parents a computer dedicated to medias (mostly photographs and movies trough DLNA). My father asked me if he could read blu-ray on it, so I bought a blu-ray reader but I can't find a software to do the playback. I installed PowerDVD (a free version we got with a Blu-Ray) but it seems it now requires a (non-free) upgrade. Even if it were free, I hardly see my parent do the upgrade by themselves as they barely understand how computers work. I thought I would find a free software (something like VLC, but for blu-rays) but so far had no luck. Do you guys have a software to suggest that would solve my issues ? It should run on Windows Vista, shouldn't require an update every monday, or at least a free one. Thank you very much.

When A1 has the value 2009-08-01, then: =WEEKDAY(A1) will obtain 7 =TEXT(7, "dddd") will obtain Saturday =TEXT(7,"dddd, yyyy-mm-dd") will obtain Saturday, 1900-01-07 =TEXT(1,"dddd, yyyy-mm-dd") will obtain Sunday, 1900-01-01 =TEXT("1900-01-01","dddd, yyyy-mm-dd") will also obtain Sunday, 1900-01-01 The last two are wrong: the 1st of January 1900 is actually a Monday. • URGENT: Need a Company to Fix My Plesk & IIS on windows 2008

  Hello: I need to know a name of a company to fix my server install and get my sites running again. Windows 2008 IIS 7 Plesk 9.x The problem started when Level 2 of my hosting company adjusted a FTP users to have certain permissions....apparently he did this outside of plesk and it has been nothing but permission headaches all around. Connections....uploading files, etc. now somethings gone wrong where plesk isnt even loading properly and IIS too... • tcsh `cd` always issues a printout of `$PWD`. How do I disable this?

  Someone in IT thought it would be a good idea to modify the default behavior of the command cd in our tcsh environment. As of Monday the "upgraded" version of cd always prints out $PWD after it navigates to the new directory. e.g. % cd ~/ Directory: /nfs/pdx/home/rbroger1 which cd yields no results so it isn't being alias'd. Is there some environment variable or normal tcsh variable that is being set in our setup scripts to produce this output? I don't want to change all my scripts to use a wrappered or alias'd cd. I just want plain ol' cd.

• SharePoint / SQL Server "out of memory" error

  After months of preparation, we launched a new SharePoint intranet portal today. Immediately, some users began getting a "server out of memory" error when they tried to log in. The SharePoint server appeared to be fine, but the SQL Server was reporting 100% memory use. (It has 4 GB.) We rebooted the server and have not had further memory problems, though memory usage is hovering around 60% or above. I'm not convinced that we have solved the problem; I suspect it may return Monday morning when the whole staff tries to log in again. I'm not a database guy, and I'm stumped about how to troubleshoot this. Do we need more memory, or is there somewhere I should look to reduce memory usage?

EDIT: I just left the office but a thought struck me: I should probably restart puppet master so it can see the new hiera.conf. I'll try that on Monday; in the meantime, if anyone figures out some not-it problem, I'd appreciate it :)

  How can I grab the first subfolder in a directory and delete it? I found a script to monitor the free diskspace. It sends an alert email if space runs low, but I want to also delete some unneeded stuff. I have a backup folder where I save daily and monthly backups. I want to delete the first folder since this always the oldest, but I don't know the name of the oldest backup. • Why can't my networks reach each other?

  We have two Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2 routers, with the default firmware, DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (10/31/11) std - build 17798. Each has a separate cable internet connection with a public static IP address. They are both in the 24.123.68.0/24 space. Both of them can contact pretty much the whole internet, and they can both be accessed out on the internet with no problem, but for some reason they can't talk to each other! When I try to ping one from the other I always get "Destination Host Unreachable". There are no strange routing or firewall rules in place. And they are both set to respond to pings, I can ping them from outside. Our main IT guy is going to call our ISP on Monday, but I'm impatient, so does anyone have any ideas?

  I'm currently trying to figure out why a European chain retailer is delaying a dv7 [remaining code number is not same with american]; it is listed in their site for several days and while ordered on Monday they still don't have it in their central storage. In an earlier call I was advised that since Intel announces the processor now it may start dispatching from the 6th. Is that true? Is HP obligated not to dispatch it before the 6th? (normally/legally or as a 'deal between gentlemen'). Does anyone know if HP dispatches normally dv7s now? Did they intentionally not dispatch them to retailers before the CES?
