  • Can't install new database in OpenLDAP 2.4 with BDB on Debian

    - by Timothy High
I'm trying to install an openldap server (slapd) on a Debian EC2 instance. I have followed all the instructions I can find, and am using the recommended slapd-config approach to configuration. It all seems to be just fine, except that for some reason it can't create my new database. ldap.conf.bak (renamed to ensure it's not being used): ########## # Basics # ########## include /etc/ldap/schema/core.schema include /etc/ldap/schema/cosine.schema include /etc/ldap/schema/nis.schema include /etc/ldap/schema/inetorgperson.schema pidfile /var/run/slapd/slapd.pid argsfile /var/run/slapd/slapd.args loglevel none modulepath /usr/lib/ldap # modulepath /usr/local/libexec/openldap moduleload back_bdb.la database config #rootdn "cn=admin,cn=config" rootpw secret database bdb suffix "dc=example,dc=com" rootdn "cn=manager,dc=example,dc=com" rootpw secret directory /usr/local/var/openldap-data ######## # ACLs # ######## access to attrs=userPassword by anonymous auth by self write by * none access to * by self write by * none When I run slaptest on it, it complains that it couldn't find the id2entry.bdb file: root@server:/etc/ldap# slaptest -f ldap.conf.bak -F slapd.d bdb_db_open: database "dc=example,dc=com": db_open(/usr/local/var/openldap-data/id2entry.bdb) failed: No such file or directory (2). backend_startup_one (type=bdb, suffix="dc=example,dc=com"): bi_db_open failed! (2) slap_startup failed (test would succeed using the -u switch) Using the -u switch it works, of course. But that merely creates the configuration. It doesn't resolve the underlying problem: root@server:/etc/ldap# slaptest -f ldap.conf.bak -F slapd.d -u config file testing succeeded Looking in the database directory, the basic files are there (with right ownership, after a manual chown), but the dbd file wasn't created: root@server:/etc/ldap# ls -al /usr/local/var/openldap-data total 4328 drwxr-sr-x 2 openldap openldap 4096 Mar 1 15:23 . drwxr-sr-x 4 root staff 4096 Mar 1 13:50 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 openldap openldap 3080 Mar 1 14:35 DB_CONFIG -rw------- 1 openldap openldap 24576 Mar 1 15:23 __db.001 -rw------- 1 openldap openldap 843776 Mar 1 15:23 __db.002 -rw------- 1 openldap openldap 2629632 Mar 1 15:23 __db.003 -rw------- 1 openldap openldap 655360 Mar 1 14:35 __db.004 -rw------- 1 openldap openldap 4431872 Mar 1 15:23 __db.005 -rw------- 1 openldap openldap 32768 Mar 1 15:23 __db.006 -rw-r--r-- 1 openldap openldap 2048 Mar 1 15:23 alock (note that, because I'm doing this as root, I had to also change ownership of some of the files created by slaptest) Finally, I can start the slapd service, but it dies in the attempt (text from syslog): Mar 1 15:06:23 server slapd[21160]: @(#) $OpenLDAP: slapd 2.4.23 (Jun 15 2011 13:31:57) $#012#011@incagijs:/home/thijs/debian/p-u/openldap-2.4.23/debian/build/servers/slapd Mar 1 15:06:23 server slapd[21160]: config error processing olcDatabase={1}bdb,cn=config: Mar 1 15:06:23 server slapd[21160]: slapd stopped. Mar 1 15:06:23 server slapd[21160]: connections_destroy: nothing to destroy. I manually checked the olcDatabase={1}bdb file, and it looks fine to my amateur eye. All my specific configs are there. Unfortunately, syslog isn't reporting a specific error in this case (if it were a file permission error, it would say). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling slapd, changing permissions, Googling my wits out, but I'm tapped out. Any OpenLDAP genius out there would be greatly appreciated!

  • OpenLDAP mirror mode replication failing with TLS behind a load balancer

    - by Lynn Owens
    I have two OpenLDAP servers that are both running TLS. They are: ldap1.mydomain.com ldap2.mydomain.com I also have a load balancer cluster with a dns name of it's own: ldap.mydomain.com The SSL certificate has a CN of ldap.mydomain.com, with SANs of ldap1.mydomain.com and ldap2.mydomain.com. Everything works... Except mirror mode replication. My mirror mode replication is setup like this: ldap.conf TLS_REQCERT allow cn=config.ldif olcServerID: 1 ldap://ldap1.mydomain.com olcServerID: 2 ldap://ldap2.mydomain.com On ldap1, olcDatabase{1}hdb.ldif olcMirrorMode: TRUE olcSyncrepl: {0}rid=001 provider=ldap://ldap2.mydomain.com bindmethod=simple bindmethod=simple binddn="cn=me,dc=mydomain,dc=com" credentials="REDACTED" starttls=yes searchbase="dc=mydomain,dc=com" schemachecking=on type=refreshAndPersist retry="60 +" On ldap2, olcDatabase{1}hdb.ldif olcMirrorMode: TRUE olcSyncrepl: {0}rid=001 provider=ldap://ldap1.mydomain.com bindmethod=simple bindmethod=simple binddn="cn=me,dc=mydomain,dc=com" credentials="REDACTED" starttls=yes searchbase="dc=mydomain,dc=com" schemachecking=on type=refreshAndPersist retry="60 +" Here's the errors I'm getting in syslog: Dec 1 21:05:01 ldap1 slapd[6800]: slap_client_connect: URI=ldap://ldap2.mydomain.com DN="cn=me,dc=mydomain,dc=com" ldap_sasl_bind_s failed (-1) Dec 1 21:05:01 ldap1 slapd[6800]: do_syncrepl: rid=001 rc -1 retrying Dec 1 21:05:08 ldap1 slapd[6800]: conn=1111 fd=20 ACCEPT from IP=ldap.mydomain.com:2295 (IP=ldap1.mydomain.com:636) Dec 1 21:05:08 ldap1 slapd[6800]: conn=1111 fd=20 closed (TLS negotiation failure) Any ideas? • login restriction with ldap, but where to store the functional rights/access control list?

    - by jrEwing
Question is: Best practices when using LDAP authentication like MS ActiveDirectory but having complex access control rights inside each application. Did you put it all in the LDAP or did you link it with information in the application? Looking to build this in asp.net mvc 2 and using membership features, so best practice here i guess is that we roll our own custom provider to acomplish this...

  • Password hashing, salt and storage of hashed values

    - by Jonathan Leffler
Suppose you were at liberty to decide how hashed passwords were to be stored in a DBMS. Are there obvious weaknesses in a scheme like this one? To create the hash value stored in the DBMS, take: A value that is unique to the DBMS server instance as part of the salt, And the username as a second part of the salt, And create the concatenation of the salt with the actual password, And hash the whole string using the SHA-256 algorithm, And store the result in the DBMS. This would mean that anyone wanting to come up with a collision should have to do the work separately for each user name and each DBMS server instance separately. I'd plan to keep the actual hash mechanism somewhat flexible to allow for the use of the new NIST standard hash algorithm (SHA-3) that is still being worked on. The 'value that is unique to the DBMS server instance' need not be secret - though it wouldn't be divulged casually. The intention is to ensure that if someone uses the same password in different DBMS server instances, the recorded hashes would be different. Likewise, the user name would not be secret - just the password proper. Would there be any advantage to having the password first and the user name and 'unique value' second, or any other permutation of the three sources of data? Or what about interleaving the strings? Do I need to add (and record) a random salt value (per password) as well as the information above? (Advantage: the user can re-use a password and still, probably, get a different hash recorded in the database. Disadvantage: the salt has to be recorded. I suspect the advantage considerably outweighs the disadvantage.) There are quite a lot of related SO questions - this list is unlikely to be comprehensive: Encrypting/Hashing plain text passwords in database Secure hash and salt for PHP passwords The necessity of hiding the salt for a hash Clients-side MD5 hash with time salt Simple password encryption Salt generation and Open Source software I think that the answers to these questions support my algorithm (though if you simply use a random salt, then the 'unique value per server' and username components are less important).

  • Cisco ASA: Allowing and Denying VPN Access based on membership to an AD group

    - by milkandtang
I have a Cisco ASA 5505 connecting to an Active Directory server for VPN authentication. Usually we'd restrict this to a particular OU, but in this case users which need access are spread across multiple OUs. So, I'd like to use a group to specify which users have remote access. I've created the group and added the users, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to deny users which aren't in that group. Right now, if someone connects they get assigned the correct group policy "companynamera" if they are in that group, so the LDAP mapping is working. However, users who are not in that group still authenticate fine, and their group policy becomes the LDAP path of their first group, i.e. CN=Domain Users,CN=Users,DC=example,DC=com, and then are still allowed access. How do I add a filter so that I can map everything that isn't "companynamera" to no access? Config I'm using (with some stuff such as ACLs and mappings removed, since they are just noise here): gateway# show run : Saved : ASA Version 8.2(1) ! hostname gateway domain-name corp.company-name.com enable password gDZcqZ.aUC9ML0jK encrypted passwd gDZcqZ.aUC9ML0jK encrypted names name 192.168.0.2 dc5 description FTP Server name 192.168.0.5 dc2 description Everything server name 192.168.0.6 dc4 description File Server name 192.168.0.7 ts1 description Light Use Terminal Server name 192.168.0.8 ts2 description Heavy Use Terminal Server name 4.4.4.82 primary-frontier name 5.5.5.26 primary-eschelon name 172.21.18.5 dmz1 description Kerio Mail Server and FTP Server name 4.4.4.84 ts-frontier name 4.4.4.85 vpn-frontier name 5.5.5.28 ts-eschelon name 5.5.5.29 vpn-eschelon name 5.5.5.27 email-eschelon name 4.4.4.83 guest-frontier name 4.4.4.86 email-frontier dns-guard ! • OpenLDAP PAM authen does not support SSHA on FreeBSD10

    - by suker200
OpenLDAP PAM authen does not support SSHA? Hi everyone, Now, I lost one day to figure out, the reason my FreeBSD10 can not authenticate SSH user via LDAP because pam_ldap and nss_ldap do not support SSHA password when OpenLDAP support SSHA method. I have checked /usr/local/etc/ldap.conf, they just have these pam_password methods: clear, crypt, nds, racf, ad, exop. So, If I switch to CRYPT, I can authenticate successfully. So, IMHO, I will be very appreciative for any point or suggestion from everyone to make my FreeBSD10 PAM support SSHA, is there any way or can not? Infor: Ldap Server (389 DS - Centos) - Ldap client (FreeBSD10) what I have got: authen via Ldap between Centos - Centos (Okie). Centos (Ldap Server) - FreeBSD failed (work if I using crypt) Thank and BR Suker200

  • How to use SQLAlchemy to dump an SQL file from query expressions to bulk-insert into a DBMS?

    - by Mahmoud Abdelkader
Please bear with me as I explain the problem, how I tried to solve it, and my question on how to improve it is at the end. I have a 100,000 line csv file from an offline batch job and I needed to insert it into the database as its proper models. Ordinarily, if this is a fairly straight-forward load, this can be trivially loaded by just munging the CSV file to fit a schema, but I had to do some external processing that requires querying and it's just much more convenient to use SQLAlchemy to generate the data I want. The data I want here is 3 models that represent 3 pre-exiting tables in the database and each subsequent model depends on the previous model. For example: Model C --> Foreign Key --> Model B --> Foreign Key --> Model A So, the models must be inserted in the order A, B, and C. I came up with a producer/consumer approach: - instantiate a multiprocessing.Process which contains a threadpool of 50 persister threads that have a threadlocal connection to a database - read a line from the file using the csv DictReader - enqueue the dictionary to the process, where each thread creates the appropriate models by querying the right values and each thread persists the models in the appropriate order This was faster than a non-threaded read/persist but it is way slower than bulk-loading a file into the database. The job finished persisting after about 45 minutes. For fun, I decided to write it in SQL statements, it took 5 minutes. Writing the SQL statements took me a couple of hours, though. So my question is, could I have used a faster method to insert rows using SQLAlchemy? As I understand it, SQLAlchemy is not designed for bulk insert operations, so this is less than ideal. This follows to my question, is there a way to generate the SQL statements using SQLAlchemy, throw them in a file, and then just use a bulk-load into the database? I know about str(model_object) but it does not show the interpolated values. I would appreciate any guidance for how to do this faster. Thanks!

  • How to create select SQL statement that would produce "merged" dataset from two tables(Oracle DBMS)?

    - by Roman Kagan
Here's my original question: merging two data sets Unfortunately I omitted some intircacies, that I'd like to elaborate here. So I have two tables events_source_1 and events_source_2 tables. I have to produce the data set from those tables into resultant dataset (that I'd be able to insert into third table, but that's irrelevant). events_source_1 contain historic event data and I have to do get the most recent event (for such I'm doing the following: select event_type,b,c,max(event_date),null next_event_date from events_source_1 group by event_type,b,c,event_date,null events_source_2 contain the future event data and I have to do the following: select event_type,b,c,null event_date, next_event_date from events_source_2 where b>sysdate; How to put outer join statement to fill the void (i.e. when same event_type,b,c found from event_source_2 then next_event_date will be filled with the first date found GREATLY APPRECIATE FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE.

  • How to achieve "merge" of two data sets with Insert SQL statemen (Oracle DBMS)t?

    - by Roman Kagan
Hi: What would be the insert SQL statement to merge data from two tables. For example I have events_source_1 table (columns: event_type_id, event_date) and events_source_2 table (same columns) and events_target table (columns: event_type_id, past_event_date nullalbe, future_event_date nullable). Events_source_1 has past events, Events_source_2 has future events and resultant events_target would contain past and future events in the same row for same event_type_id. If there is no past_events but future_events then past_event_date won't be set and only future_event_date will be and the opposite is true too. Thanks a lot in advance for helping me resolving this problem.

  • Examples using Active Directory/LDAP groups for permissions \ roles in Rails App.

    - by Nick Gorbikoff
Hello. I was wondering how other people implemented this scenario. I have an internal rails app ( inventory management, label printing, shipping, etc). I'm rewriting security on the system, cause the old way got to cumbersome to maintain ( users table, passwords, roles) - I used restful_authentication and roles. It was implemented about 3 years ago. I already implemented AuthLogic with ruby-ldap-net to authenticate users ( actually that was surprisingly easy, compared to how I struggled with other frameworks/languages before). Next step is roles. I already have groups defined in Active Directory - so I don't want to run a separate roles system in my rails app, I just want to reuse Active Directory groups - since that part of the system is already maintained for other purposes ( shared drives, backups, pc access, etc) So I was wondering if others had experience implementing permissions/roles in a rails app based on groups in Active Directory or LDAP. Also the roles requirements are pretty complex. Here is an example: For instance I have users that belong to the supervisors group in AD and to inventory dept, so I was that user to be able to run "advanced" tasks in invetory - adjust qty, run reports, however other "supervisors" from other departmanets, shouldn't be able to do this, also Top Management - should be able to use those reports (regardless weather they belong to the invetory or not), but not Middle Management, unless they are in inventory group. Admins of the system (Domain Admins) should have unrestricted access to the system , except for HR & Finances part unless they are in HR ( like you don't want all system admins (except for one authorized one) to see personal info of other employees). I looked at acl9, cancan, aegis. I was wondering if there are any advantaged/cons to using one versus the other for this particular use of system access based on AD. Suggest other systems if you had good experience. Thank you!!!

  • Finding a person in the forest

    - by PointsToShare
© 2011 By: Dov Trietsch. All rights reserved finding a person in the forest or Limiting the AD result in SharePoint People Picker There are times when we need to limit the SharePoint audience of certain farms or servers or site collections to a particular audience. One of my experiences involved limiting access to US citizens, another to a particular location. Now, most of us – your humble servant included – are not Active Directory experts – but we must be able to handle the “audience restrictions” as required. So here is how it’s done in a nutshell. Important note. Not all could be done in PowerShell (at least not yet)! There are no Windows PowerShell commands to configure People Picker. The stsadm command is: stsadm -o setproperty -pn peoplepicker-searchadcustomquery -pv ADQuery –url http://somethingOrOther Note the long-hyphenated property name. Now to filling the ADQuery.   LDAP Query in a nutshell Syntax LDAP is no older than SQL and an LDAP query is actually a query against the LDAP Database. LDAP attributes are the equivalent of Database columns, so why do we have to learn a new query language? Beats me! But we must, so here it is. The syntax of an LDAP query string is made of individual statements with relational operators including: = Equal <= Lower than or equal >= Greater than or equal… and memberOf – a group membership. ! Not * Wildcard Equal and memberOf are the most commonly used. Checking for absence uses the ! – not and the * - wildcard Example: (SN=Grant) All whose last name – SurName – is Grant Example: (!(SN=Grant)) All except Grant Example: (!(SN=*)) all where there is no SurName i.e SurName is absent (probably Rappers). Example: (CN=MyGroup) Common Name is MyGroup.  Example: (GN=J*) all the Given Names that start with J (JJ, Jane, Jon, John, etc.) The cryptic SN, CN, GN, etc. are attributes and more about them later All the queries are enclosed in parentheses (Query). Complex queries are comprised of sets that are in AND or OR conditions. AND is denoted by the ampersand (&) and the OR is denoted by the vertical pipe (|). The general syntax is that of the Prefix polish notation where the operand precedes the variables. E.g +ab is the sum of a and b. In an LDAP query (&(A)(B)) will garner the objects for which both A and B are true. In an LDAP query (&(A)(B)(C)) will garner the objects for which A, B and C are true. There’s no limit to the number of conditions. In an LDAP query (|(A)(B)) will garner the objects for which either A or B are true. In an LDAP query (|(A)(B)(C)) will garner the objects for which at least one of A, B and C is true. There’s no limit to the number of conditions. More complex queries have both types of conditions and the parentheses determine the order of operations. Attributes Now let’s get into the SN, CN, GN, and other attributes of the query SN – is the SurName (last name) GN – is the Given Name (first name) CN – is the Common Name, usually GN followed by SN OU – is an Organization Unit such as division, department etc. DC – is a Domain Content in the AD forest l – lower case ‘L’ stands for location. Jerusalem anybody? Or Katmandu. UPN – User Principal Name, is usually the first part of an email address. By nature it is unique in the forest. Most systems set the UPN to be the first initial followed by the SN of the person involved. Some limit the total to 8 characters. If we have many ‘jsmith’ we have to somehow distinguish them from each other. DN – is the distinguished name – a name unique to AD forest in which it lives. Usually it’s a CN with some domain or group distinguishers. DN is important in conjunction with the memberOf relation. Groups have stricter requirement. Each group has to have a unique name - its CN and it has to be unique regardless of its place. See more below. All of the attributes are case insensitive. CN, cn, Cn, and cN are identical. objectCategory is an element that requires special consideration. AD contains many different object like computers, printers, and of course people and groups. In the queries below, we’re limiting our search to people (person). Putting it altogether Let’s get a list of all the Johns in the SPAdmin group of the Jerusalem that local domain. (&(objectCategory=person)(memberOf=cn=SPAdmin,ou=Jerusalem,dc=local)) The memberOf=cn=SPAdmin uses the cn (Common Name) of the SPAdmin group. This is how the memberOf relation is used. ‘SPAdmin’ is actually the DN of the group. Also the memberOf relation does not allow wild cards (*) in the group name. Also, you are limited to at most one ‘OU’ entry. Let’s add Marvin Minsky to the search above. |(&(objectCategory=person)(memberOf=cn=SPAdmin,ou=Jerusalem,dc=local))(CN=Marvin Minsky) Here I added the or pipeline at the beginning of the query and put the CN requirement for Minsky at the end. Note that if Marvin was already in the prior result, he’s not going to be listed twice. One last note: You may see a dryer but more complete list of attributes rules and examples in: http://www.tek-tips.com/faqs.cfm?fid=5667 And finally (thus negating the claim that my previous note was last), to the best of my knowledge there are 3 more ways to limit the audience. One is to use the peoplepicker-searchadcustomfilter property using the same ADQuery. This works only in SP1 and above. The second is to limit the search to users within this particular site collection – the property name is peoplepicker-onlysearchwithinsitecollection and the value is yes (-pv yes) And the third is –pn peoplepicker-serviceaccountdirectorypaths –pv “OU=ou1,DC=dc1…..” Again you are limited to at most one ‘OU’ phrase – no OU=ou1,OU=ou2… And now the real end. The main property discussed in this sprawling and seemingly endless monogram – peoplepicker-searchadcustomquery - is the most general way of getting the job done. Here are a few examples of command lines that worked and some that didn’t. Can you see why? C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN>stsa dm -o setproperty -url http://somethingOrOther -pn peoplepicker-searchadcustomfi lter -pv (Title=David) Operation completed successfully. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN>stsa dm -o setproperty -url http://somethingOrOther -pn peoplepicker-searchadcustomfi lter -pv (!Title=David) Operation completed successfully. Too many OUs C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN>stsa dm -o setproperty -url http://somethingOrOther -pn peoplepicker-searchadcustomfi lter -pv (OU=OURealName) Operation completed successfully. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN>stsa dm -o setproperty -url http://somethingOrOther -pn peoplepicker-searchadcustomfi lter -pv (DC=TopDC,DC=MidDC,DC=BottomDC) Operation completed successfully. • Best practice for authenticating DMZ against AD in LAN

    - by Sergei
We have few customer facing servers in DMZ that also have user accounts , all accounts are in shadow password file. I am trying to consolidate user logons and thinking about letting LAN users to authenticate against Active Directory.Services needing authentication are Apache, Proftpd and ssh. After consulting security team I have setup authentication DMZ that has LDAPS proxy that in turn contacts another LDAPS proxy (proxy2) in LAN and this one passes authentication info via LDAP (as LDAP bind) to AD controller.Second LDAP proxy only needed because AD server refuses speak TLS with our secure LDAP implemetation. This works for Apache using appropriate module. At a later stage I may try to move customer accounts from servers to LDAP proxy so they are not scattered around servers. For SSH I joined proxy2 to Windows domain so users can logon using their windows credentials. Then I created ssh keys and copied them to DMZ servers using ssh-copy, to enable passwordless logon once users are authenticated. Is this a good way to implement this kind of SSO?Did I miss any security issues here or maybe there is a better way ofachieving my goal?

  • Setup Convergence Address Book DisplayName Lookup

    - by user13332755
At Convergence Address Book the default lookup for 'Display Name' is the LDAP attribute 'cn', which leads into confusion if you start to setup 'displayName' LDAP attributes for your users. LDAP User Entry with diaplyName attribute: This behavior can be controlled by the configuration file xlate-inetorgperson.xml. Change the default value of XPATH abperson\entry\displayname from 'cn' to 'displayName'. <convergence_deploy_location>/config/templates/ab/corp-dir/xlate-inetorgperson.xml Note: In case the user has no 'displayName' attribute in LDAP you might noticed '...' at the user entry, if found via 'mail' attribute.

  • Which is better for multi-use auth, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or LDAP?

    - by Fearless
I want to set up an Oracle Linux 6 server that gives users secure IMAP email (with dovecot), Jabber IM, FTP (with vsftpd), and calDav. However, I want each user logon to be able to authenticate all services (e.g. Joe Smith signs up once for a username and password that he can use for email, ftp, and his calendar). My question is, which database service will be best suited for that application? Also, is there a way to link the database with the preexisting server shell logins (e.g. so I can read the root account's LogCheck emails on a different device)?

  • Windows 7 cannot join samba domain

    - by Antonis Christofides
I have a 3.5.6 samba server with a LDAP backend (both on Debian 6.0). I've been successfully adding Windows XP machines to the domain for years. I now try to add Windows 7. I have made the recommended registry changes, but I don't have any success so far. Here is what happens: 1. I go to computer name, select "Domain" instead of "Workgroup", type in the domain name, click OK. It asks me for the username and password of an account that can add computers to the domain; I enter them. After about 40 seconds, I get the following message: The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "ITIA": The specified computer account could not be found. Contact an administrator to verify the account is in the domain. If the account has been deleted unjoin, reboot, and rejoin the domain. Despite this, the samba server successfully creates the computer account. 2. Therefore, if I try again a second time, without deleting the already created computer account, I get a different error: The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "ITIA": The specified account already exists. (Note that until a while ago samba wasn't configured to automatically create computer accounts. What I did whenever I wanted an XP to join was to manually create it. When I first attempted to solve the Windows 7 join problem, I setup samba to do this automatically, as this is what most people do, as I understand, and I thought that it might be related. I haven't attempted to add an XP since I made this change, so I don't know if it works, but whether it works or not, the problem remains.) Update 1: Here are the relevant parts of smb.conf: [global] panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d workgroup = ITIA server string = Itia file server announce as = NT interfaces = 147.102.160.1 volume = %h passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://ldap.itia.ntua.gr:389 ldap admin dn = uid=samba,ou=daemons,dc=itia,dc=ntua,dc=gr ldap ssl = off ldap suffix = dc=itia,dc=ntua,dc=gr ldap user suffix = ou=people ldap group suffix = ou=groups ldap machine suffix = ou=computers unix password sync = no add machine script = smbldap-useradd -w -i %u log file = /var/log/samba/samba-log.all log level = 3 max log size = 5000 syslog = 2 socket options = SO_KEEPALIVE TCP_NODELAY encrypt passwords = true password level = 1 security = user domain master = yes local master = no wins support = yes domain logons = yes idmap gid = 1000-2000 Update 2: The server has a single network interface eth1 (also an unused eth0 that shows up only in the kernel boot messages) and two ip addresses; the main, 147.102.160.1, and an additional one, 147.102.160.37, that comes up with "ip addr add 147.102.160.37/32 dev eth1" (used only for a web site that has a different certificate than other web sites served from the same machine). One of the problems I recently faced was that samba was using the latter IP address. I fixed that by adding the "interfaces = 147.102.160.1" statement in smb.conf. Now: acheloos:/etc/apache2# tcpdump host 147.102.160.40 and not port 5900 tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode listening on eth1, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 65535 bytes 13:13:56.549048 IP lithaios.itia.civil.ntua.gr.netbios-dgm > 147.102.160.255.netbios-dgm: NBT UDP PACKET(138) 13:13:56.549056 ARP, Request who-has acheloos2.itia.civil.ntua.gr tell lithaios.itia.civil.ntua.gr, length 46 13:13:56.549091 ARP, Reply acheloos2.itia.civil.ntua.gr is-at 00:10:4b:b4:9e:59 (oui Unknown), length 28 13:13:56.549324 IP acheloos.itia.civil.ntua.gr.netbios-dgm > lithaios.itia.civil.ntua.gr.netbios-dgm: NBT UDP PACKET(138) 13:13:56.549608 IP lithaios.itia.civil.ntua.gr.netbios-dgm > acheloos2.itia.civil.ntua.gr.netbios-dgm: NBT UDP PACKET(138) 13:13:56.549741 IP acheloos.itia.civil.ntua.gr.netbios-dgm > lithaios.itia.civil.ntua.gr.netbios-dgm: NBT UDP PACKET(138) 13:13:56.550364 IP lithaios.itia.civil.ntua.gr.netbios-dgm > acheloos.itia.civil.ntua.gr.netbios-dgm: NBT UDP PACKET(138) 13:13:56.550468 IP acheloos.itia.civil.ntua.gr.netbios-dgm > lithaios.itia.civil.ntua.gr.netbios-dgm: NBT UDP PACKET(138) (acheloos2 is the second IP address, 147.102.160.37). The above dump occurs when I click "OK" (to join the domain), until it asks me for the username and password of a user that can join the domain. I don't know why the client is contacting the second IP address. I tried temporarily deactivating it, but I still had some related ARP traffic (though I think not IP traffic).

  • Security in OBIEE 11g, Part 2

    - by Rob Reynolds
Continuing the series on OBIEE 11g, our guest blogger this week is Pravin Janardanam. Here is Part 2 of his overview of Security in OBIEE 11g. OBIEE 11g Security Overview, Part 2 by Pravin Janardanam In my previous blog on Security, I discussed the OBIEE 11g changes regarding Authentication mechanism, RPD protection and encryption. This blog will include a discussion about OBIEE 11g Authorization and other Security aspects. Authorization: Authorization in 10g was achieved using a combination of Users, Groups and association of privileges and object permissions to users and Groups. Two keys changes to Authorization in OBIEE 11g are: Application Roles Policies / Permission Groups Application Roles are introduced in OBIEE 11g. An application role is specific to the application. They can be mapped to other application roles defined in the same application scope and also to enterprise users or groups, and they are used in authorization decisions. Application roles in 11g take the place of Groups in 10g within OBIEE application. In OBIEE 10g, any changes to corporate LDAP groups require a corresponding change to Groups and their permission assignment. In OBIEE 11g, Application roles provide insulation between permission definitions and corporate LDAP Groups. Permissions are defined at Application Role level and changes to LDAP groups just require a reassignment of the Group to the Application Roles. Permissions and privileges are assigned to Application Roles and users in OBIEE 11g compared to Groups and Users in 10g. The diagram below shows the relationship between users, groups and application roles. Note that the Groups shown in the diagram refer to LDAP Groups (WebLogic Groups by default) and not OBIEE application Groups. The following screenshot compares the permission windows from Admin tool in 10g vs 11g. Note that the Groups in the OBIEE 10g are replaced with Application Roles in OBIEE 11g. The same is applicable to OBIEE web catalog objects.    The default Application Roles available after OBIEE 11g installation are BIAdministrator, BISystem, BIConsumer and BIAuthor. Application policies are the authorization policies that an application relies upon for controlling access to its resources. An Application Role is defined by the Application Policy. The following screenshot shows the policies defined for BIAdministrator and BISystem Roles. Note that the permission for impersonation is granted to BISystem Role. In OBIEE 10g, the permission to manage repositories and Impersonation were assigned to “Administrators” group with no control to separate these permissions in the Administrators group. Hence user “Administrator” also had the permission to impersonate. In OBI11g, BIAdministrator does not have the permission to impersonate. This gives more flexibility to have multiple users perform different administrative functions. Application Roles, Policies, association of Policies to application roles and association of users and groups to application roles are managed using Fusion Middleware Enterprise Manager (FMW EM). They reside in the policy store, identified by the system-jazn-data.xml file. The screenshots below show where they are created and managed in FMW EM. The following screenshot shows the assignment of WebLogic Groups to Application Roles. The following screenshot shows the assignment of Permissions to Application Roles (Application Policies). Note: Object level permission association to Applications Roles resides in the RPD for repository objects. Permissions and Privilege for web catalog objects resides in the OBIEE Web Catalog. Wherever Groups were used in the web catalog and RPD has been replaced with Application roles in OBIEE 11g. Following are the tools used in OBIEE 11g Security Administration: ·       Users and Groups are managed in Oracle WebLogic Administration console (by default). If WebLogic is integrated with other LDAP products, then Users and Groups needs to managed using the interface provide by the respective LDAP vendor – New in OBIEE 11g ·       Application Roles and Application Policies are managed in Oracle Enterprise Manager - Fusion Middleware Control – New in OBIEE 11g ·       Repository object permissions are managed in OBIEE Administration tool – Same as 10g but the assignment is to Application Roles instead of Groups ·       Presentation Services Catalog Permissions and Privileges are managed in OBI Application administration page - Same as 10g but the assignment is to Application Roles instead of Groups Credential Store: Credential Store is a single consolidated service provider to store and manage the application credentials securely. The credential store contains credentials that either user supplied or system generated. Credential store in OBIEE 10g is file based and is managed using cryptotools utility. In 11g, Credential store can be managed directly from the FMW Enterprise Manager and is stored in cwallet.sso file. By default, the Credential Store stores password for deployed RPDs, BI Publisher data sources and BISystem user. In addition, Credential store can be LDAP based but only Oracle Internet Directory is supported right now. As you can see OBIEE security is integrated with Oracle Fusion Middleware security architecture. This provides a common security framework for all components of Business Intelligence and Fusion Middleware applications.

    Having checked my Apache logs for the last two days I have noticed several attempts to access URLs such as /phpmyadmin, /phpldapadmin: 121.14.241.135 - - [09/Jun/2012:04:37:35 +0100] "GET /w00tw00t.at.blackhats.romanian.anti-sec:) HTTP/1.1" 404 415 "-" "ZmEu" 121.14.241.135 - - [09/Jun/2012:04:37:35 +0100] "GET /phpMyAdmin/scripts/setup.php HTTP/1.1" 404 405 "-" "ZmEu" 121.14.241.135 - - [09/Jun/2012:04:37:35 +0100] "GET /phpmyadmin/scripts/setup.php HTTP/1.1" 404 404 "-" "ZmEu" 121.14.241.135 - - [09/Jun/2012:04:37:36 +0100] "GET /pma/scripts/setup.php HTTP/1.1" 404 399 "-" "ZmEu" 121.14.241.135 - - [09/Jun/2012:04:37:36 +0100] "GET /myadmin/scripts/setup.php HTTP/1.1" 404 403 "-" "ZmEu" 121.14.241.135 - - [09/Jun/2012:04:37:37 +0100] "GET /MyAdmin/scripts/setup.php HTTP/1.1" 404 403 "-" "ZmEu" 66.249.72.235 - - [09/Jun/2012:07:11:06 +0100] "GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.1" 404 430 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)" 66.249.72.235 - - [09/Jun/2012:07:11:06 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 424 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)" 188.132.178.34 - - [09/Jun/2012:08:39:05 +0100] "HEAD /manager/html HTTP/1.0" 404 166 "-" "-" 95.108.150.235 - - [09/Jun/2012:09:42:09 +0100] "GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.1" 404 432 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; YandexBot/3.0; +http://yandex.com/bots)" 95.108.150.235 - - [09/Jun/2012:09:42:09 +0100] "GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.1" 404 432 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; YandexBot/3.0; +http://yandex.com/bots)" 95.108.150.235 - - [09/Jun/2012:09:42:10 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 424 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; YandexBot/3.0; +http://yandex.com/bots)" 95.108.150.235 - - [09/Jun/2012:09:42:10 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 424 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; YandexBot/3.0; +http://yandex.com/bots)" 95.108.150.235 - - [09/Jun/2012:09:42:11 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 424 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; YandexBot/3.0; +http://yandex.com/bots)" 95.108.150.235 - - [09/Jun/2012:09:42:11 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 424 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; YandexBot/3.0; +http://yandex.com/bots)" 194.128.132.2 - - [09/Jun/2012:16:04:41 +0100] "HEAD / HTTP/1.0" 200 260 "-" "-" 66.249.68.176 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:08:12 +0100] "GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.1" 404 430 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)" 66.249.68.176 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:08:13 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 424 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:33 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 388 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:34 +0100] "GET /phpldapadmin/ HTTP/1.1" 404 379 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:34 +0100] "GET /phpldapadmin/htdocs/ HTTP/1.1" 404 386 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:35 +0100] "GET /phpldap/ HTTP/1.1" 404 374 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:36 +0100] "GET /phpldap/htdocs/ HTTP/1.1" 404 381 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:36 +0100] "GET /admin/ HTTP/1.1" 404 372 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:38 +0100] "GET /admin/ldap/ HTTP/1.1" 404 377 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:38 +0100] "GET /admin/ldap/htdocs/ HTTP/1.1" 404 384 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:38 +0100] "GET /admin/phpldap/ HTTP/1.1" 404 380 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:39 +0100] "GET /admin/phpldap/htdocs/ HTTP/1.1" 404 387 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:39 +0100] "GET /admin/phpldapadmin/htdocs/ HTTP/1.1" 404 392 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:40 +0100] "GET /admin/phpldapadmin/ HTTP/1.1" 404 385 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:40 +0100] "GET /openldap HTTP/1.1" 404 374 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:41 +0100] "GET /openldap/htdocs HTTP/1.1" 404 381 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:42 +0100] "GET /openldap/htdocs/ HTTP/1.1" 404 382 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:44 +0100] "GET /ldap/ HTTP/1.1" 404 371 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:44 +0100] "GET /ldap/htdocs/ HTTP/1.1" 404 378 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:45 +0100] "GET /ldap/phpldapadmin/ HTTP/1.1" 404 384 "-" "-" 212.3.106.249 - - [09/Jun/2012:18:12:46 +0100] "GET /ldap/phpldapadmin/htdocs/ HTTP/1.1" 404 391 "-" "-" Is there any way I can use Fail2Ban or any other similar software to ban these IPs in situations when my server is being abused this way (by trying several "common" URLs)?

  • Configure Calendar Server 7 to Use the davUniqueId Attribute

    - by dabrain
Starting with Calendar Server 7 Update 3 (Patch 08) we introduce a new attribute davUniqueId in the davEntity objectclass, to use as the unique identifier.  The reason behind this is quite simple, the LDAP operational attribute nsUniqueId  has been chosen as the default value used for the unique identifier. It was discovered that this choice has a potential serious downside. The problem with using nsUniqueId is that if the LDAP entry for a user, group, or resource is deleted and recreated in LDAP, the new entry would receive a different nsUniqueId value from the Directory Server, causing a disconnect from the existing account in the calendar database. As a result, recreated users cannot access their existing calendars. How To Configure Calendar Server to Use the davUniqueId Attribute? Populate the davUniqueId to the ldap users. You can create a LDIF output file only or (-x option) directly run the ldapmodify from the populate-davuniqueid shell script. # ./populate-davuniqueid -h localhost -p 389 -D "cn=Directory Manager" -w <passwd> -b "o=red" -O -o /tmp/out.ldif The ldapmodify might failed like below, in that case the LDAP entry already have the 'daventity' objectclass, in those cases run populate-davuniqueid script without the -O option. # ldapmodify -x -h localhost -p 389 -D "cn=Directory Manager" -w <passwd> -c -f /tmp/out.ldif modifying entry "uid=mparis,ou=People,o=vmdomain.tld,o=red" ldapmodify: Type or value exists (20) In this case the user 'mparis' already have the objectclass 'daventity', ldapmodify do not take care of this DN and just take the next DN (if you start ldapmodify with -c option otherwise it stop's completely) dn: uid=mparis,ou=People,o=vmdomain.tld,o=red changetype: modify add: objectclass objectclass: daventity - add: davuniqueid davuniqueid: 01a2c501-af0411e1-809de373-18ff5c8d Even run populate-davuniqueid without -O option or changing the outputfile to dn: uid=mparis,ou=People,o=vmdomain.tld,o=red changetype: modify add: davuniqueid davuniqueid: 01a2c501-af0411e1-809de373-18ff5c8d The ldapmodify works fine now. The only issue I see here is you need verify which user might need the 'daventity' objectclass as well. On the other hand start without the objectclass and only add the objectclass for the users where you get 'Objectclass violation' report. That's indicate the objectclass is missing. # ldapmodify -x -h localhost -p 389 -D "cn=Directory Manager" -w <passwd> -c -f /tmp/out.ldif modifying entry "uid=mparis,ou=People,o=vmdomain.tld,o=red" Now it is time to change the configuration to use the davuniquid attribute # ./davadmin config modify -o davcore.uriinfo.permanentuniqueid -v davuniqueid It is also needed to modfiy the search filter to use davuniqueid instead of nsuniqueid # ./davadmin config modify -o davcore.uriinfo.subjectattributes -v "cn davstore icsstatus mail mailalternateaddress davUniqueId  owner preferredlanguageuid objectclass ismemberof uniquemember memberurl mgrprfc822mailmember" Afterward IWC Calendar works fine and my test user able to access all his old events.
