• VMware player suspends on screensaver

  I have this problem with my VMWare player. When my host operating system either goes into screen saver or I lock the work station with Windows Key + L. VMWare player pauses or halts everything. So when i come back to the computer and there is a background task working inside the virtual machine it does not progress until i've actualy loged back on. Is there any way to stop this behaviour with VMWare player and keep it running in the background even when the screen saver or the work station is locked? Version of VMWare is: 3.0.0 build-203739

• Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. Incorrect password on screensaver

  First some software details: Thin client: Wyse C10LE Citrix - Windows Terminal Services - Windows Server 2008 Enterprise desktop I have a user with a very strange problem. When he locks his screen with Win+L, Windows claims he's entering wrong password when he tries to log back in. The only solution is to hard reboot the WYSE, and log back in. This reboot doesn't kill his Windows session. I've checked for errors in keyboard settings (wrong layout etc), nothing found. I suspect errors in his profile/errors in AD. No other users in the domain has this problem. EDIT: Sorry, it's NOT Win R2. Plain Windows Sever 2008

• No desktop icons after upgrade to 11.10

  I just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 and after restart it showed the login screen. After login, only the desktop background shows with ubuntu 11.10 text at the bottom-left corner. Did my GNOME stop working ? My mouse pointer moves though, so its not a system crash. • User upstart session in different window manager wIndow manager

How can I make upstart find these config files without having to execute something like gnome-session?   After installing and using Ubuntu 11.10 for while I decided to install gnome shell. After Installing and rebooting my system I saw that Ubuntu light theme (ambiance/radiance) is gone. I check /usr/shar/themes and /usr/shar/icons, it seems that the light themes and mono icons exist.   Situation GNOME Shell AutoKey / autokey-gtk it has a predefined shortcut "adr" which should write an address after hitting space and a shortcut "date" which should write the current date (after hitting tab) Problem no matter what I define, "adr" or "date" it always inserts as much blank lines as the template uses Example: "date" should autocomplete after pressing space to "13/08/01" but it inserts one empty line "adr" should do my full address but it inserts 4 empty lines Question What could be wrong with my AutoKey? • Deactivate volume amplification?

  Hi everyone, I would like to deactivate the amplification feature on my sound volume slider. Using any amplification makes the sound really bad with clipping sounds taking over. It's really annoying to have to worry about where the amplification starts/stops when adjusting the slider from my keyboard or through the Gnome panel (sound thingy). I have to open the "Sound preferences" after each time adjusting the volume and ensure that the level is set to 100% unamplified. So can I do this someway easy in Ubuntu 10.10?

  I had installed Gnome Activity Journal, Zeitgeist and Tracker but borked the install by mixing the PPAs with the universe repos. I removed all the packages, did apt-get remove --purge, then did a locate to manually rm everything else. Then I reinstalled from the PPAs properly. Now I can't tag files anymore, either in Nautilus or GAJ. What packages are involved in tagging? What else might I be missing?

• How to save terminal history manually?

  It's my understanding that the history file is updated when the terminal exits. But sometimes my computer crashes out, and the terminal doesn't exit cleanly, and then I lose those commands from my history which is annoying. How can I make it flush immediately, so that the entries still go there even if my computer has a meltdown? At the moment I'm using this workaround, but I feel there should be a better way. I'm using gnome-terminal on Ubuntu 12.10.

For some reason when I try to run it on both of my computers and qemu, it freezes up. Sadly I cant access a console to view all my logs, but I do have a dump of the boot process. • Auto log off windows machine after certain number of minutes

  I have three machines on my network, two are windows xp and one is windows 7. i would like to have all three machines log a user off if they are on for more than 60 minutes. And I would like this to be applied to the machine not on a per user basis, because I do not want this policy to apply to those users on any other machine. I have installed winexit.scr on one of the machines but the problem is that I cannot change the default value of 10 minutes for the screensaver because that is controlled through group policy, and I cannot seem to find where to change that through group policy on a per machine basis NOT on a per user basis. If I have left out any details I apologize please let me know anything that is needed

• MS Clear Screen Saver doesn't work

  I have a problem with really exotic thing - Microsoft Clear Screen Saver. As it's name suggests, it's a screen saver, that's transparent (MS posted it as a part of W2k Resource Kit). When you move the mouse/hit a key, the "lock" dialog appears. I would like to use this to view servers desktops without need to log in. I tested it on my XP's, and it works flawlessy. But on W2K3 servers it doesn't work. After the screensaver timeout, the error message is displayed: "The Clear Screen Saver cannot display the user desktop after the workstation has been locked"

• 3D Screensaver interfering with WPF application (Windows XP)

  I have a fairly large application that uses WPF for its user interface. I recently found an unusual defect regarding 3D screensavers. The 3D screensavers 3D FlowerBox,3D Flying Objects,3D Pipes,3D Text causes 1 of my WPF windows to disappear when the screensaver activates. Other screensavers are fine. My application only encounters this problem on Windows XP. I have some experience with DirectX. When a 3D screensavers activates, the d3d device context will be switched to exclusive mode. I reckon that WPF has trouble restoring the device context when the device switches back to cooperative mode (hence why its only affecting windows XP) Has anyone seen such a scenario occur before ? Is there a remedy for the problem ? Windows XP SP3, DirectX 9.0c, .NET 3.5

  Currently I am using standard Dvorak on Ubuntu 13.10 and Gnome 3.10. Unfortunately, writing Umlauts (ä,ö,ü) in German requires me to switch to QWERTY/QWERTZ frequently or forces me to not write those umlauts (which looks strange to German native speakers). Is there a way to use Dvorak Type 2, including the umlauts, but otherwise using the standard English layout on Ubuntu with Gnome? I'm a fast typer on standard English Dvorak and would like to avoid fully switching to German Dvorak as this would (at least temporarily) reduce my typing speed.

I want to write a script that will... create the guest-session folder in /etc; create the skel folder in /etc/guest-session/; copy all the content (including subfolders and files) in /tmp/guest-xxxx/; paste all that content into /etc/guest-session/skel/; and change the default desktop to GNOME Classic instead of Unity 2D (this can be separate from the script if it's easier to do as a general setting), ...all within the guest-session. This is for a project installing Ubuntu in cyber-cafes so it's critical to the project. I appreciate any help you can offer.
