  • Java service wrapper and additional application command line parameters

    - by Jake
I'm currently using java service wrapper to wrap a java application that I've developed. I'm needing to ability to pass in additional command line parameters to my application through the java service wrapper. Pretend my app is called myapp and I've setup java service wrapper so that the script I run to start is called myapp. I'd like to be able to do something like this: ./myapp start Parameter1 parameter2 and have those additional parameters get passed into my application. Any ideas how to do this? I'm finding that googling and looking at the documentation is only pulling up how to use command line arguments to setup java service wrapper. I've had difficulty finding anything about passing command line arguments to your application except for having them hard coded in your wrapper.conf file. Right now I feel like my option is to take the additional command line parameters, set them to environment variables and have those hard coded in the wrapper.conf. I'd prefer not to go down that road though and am hoping I've overlooked something.

  • Error whenever a java applet is loaded

    - by Mudtail
Hi. For the past few months or so, I've been getting an error whenever I attempt to use a java applet. I'm getting this error on every browser I use, and I get the error occasionally in linux, too. The java applet loads for roughly 5 seconds or so, then it stops and I get two error messages, stating that an exception occurred (java.io.EOFException). This seems to happen regardless of what website I'm using. Going to the website shows I'm running java 6 update 20, and I get no error. Googling the error turns up nothing useful - I'm not a java developer, so most of the results don't apply to me at all. My question is this. What's causing this error, and what can I do to fix whatever issue is causing it?

  • Java thread dump where main thread has no call stack? (jsvc)

    - by dwhsix
We have a java process running as a daemon (under jsvc). Every several days it just stops doing any work; output to the logfile stops (it is pretty verbose, on 5-minute intervals) and it consumes no CPU or IO. There are no exceptions logged in the logfile nor in syserr or sysout. The last log statement is just prior to a db commit being done, but there is no open connection on the db server (MySQL) and reviewing the code, there should always be additional log output after that, even if it had encountered an exception that was going to bubble up. The most curious thing I find is that in the thread dump (included below), there's no thread in our code at all, and the main thread seems to have no context whatsoever: "main" prio=10 tid=0x0000000000614000 nid=0x445d runnable [0x0000000000000000] java.lang.Thread.State: RUNNABLE As noted earlier, this is a daemon process running using jsvc, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it (I can restructure the code to also allow running it directly, to test). Any suggestions on what might be happening here? Thanks... dwh Full thread dump: Full thread dump Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (14.2-b01 mixed mode): "MySQL Statement Cancellation Timer" daemon prio=10 tid=0x00002aaaf81b8800 nid=0x447b in Object.wait() [0x00002aaaf6a22000] java.lang.Thread.State: WAITING (on object monitor) at java.lang.Object.wait(Native Method) - waiting on <0x00002aaab5556d50> (a java.util.TaskQueue) at java.lang.Object.wait(Object.java:485) at java.util.TimerThread.mainLoop(Timer.java:483) - locked <0x00002aaab5556d50> (a java.util.TaskQueue) at java.util.TimerThread.run(Timer.java:462) "Low Memory Detector" daemon prio=10 tid=0x00000000006a4000 nid=0x4479 runnable [0x0000000000000000] java.lang.Thread.State: RUNNABLE "CompilerThread1" daemon prio=10 tid=0x00000000006a1000 nid=0x4477 waiting on condition [0x0000000000000000] java.lang.Thread.State: RUNNABLE "CompilerThread0" daemon prio=10 tid=0x000000000069d000 nid=0x4476 waiting on condition [0x0000000000000000] java.lang.Thread.State: RUNNABLE "Signal Dispatcher" daemon prio=10 tid=0x000000000069b000 nid=0x4465 waiting on condition [0x0000000000000000] java.lang.Thread.State: RUNNABLE "Finalizer" daemon prio=10 tid=0x0000000000678800 nid=0x4464 in Object.wait() [0x00002aaaf61d6000] java.lang.Thread.State: WAITING (on object monitor) at java.lang.Object.wait(Native Method) - waiting on <0x00002aaab54a1cb8> (a java.lang.ref.ReferenceQueue$Lock) at java.lang.ref.ReferenceQueue.remove(ReferenceQueue.java:118) - locked <0x00002aaab54a1cb8> (a java.lang.ref.ReferenceQueue$Lock) at java.lang.ref.ReferenceQueue.remove(ReferenceQueue.java:134) at java.lang.ref.Finalizer$FinalizerThread.run(Finalizer.java:159) "Reference Handler" daemon prio=10 tid=0x0000000000676800 nid=0x4463 in Object.wait() [0x00002aaaf60d5000] java.lang.Thread.State: WAITING (on object monitor) at java.lang.Object.wait(Native Method) - waiting on <0x00002aaab54a1cf0> (a java.lang.ref.Reference$Lock) at java.lang.Object.wait(Object.java:485) at java.lang.ref.Reference$ReferenceHandler.run(Reference.java:116) - locked <0x00002aaab54a1cf0> (a java.lang.ref.Reference$Lock) "main" prio=10 tid=0x0000000000614000 nid=0x445d runnable [0x0000000000000000] java.lang.Thread.State: RUNNABLE "VM Thread" prio=10 tid=0x0000000000670000 nid=0x4462 runnable "GC task thread#0 (ParallelGC)" prio=10 tid=0x000000000061e000 nid=0x445e runnable "GC task thread#1 (ParallelGC)" prio=10 tid=0x0000000000620000 nid=0x445f runnable "GC task thread#2 (ParallelGC)" prio=10 tid=0x0000000000622000 nid=0x4460 runnable "GC task thread#3 (ParallelGC)" prio=10 tid=0x0000000000623800 nid=0x4461 runnable "VM Periodic Task Thread" prio=10 tid=0x00000000006a6800 nid=0x447a waiting on condition JNI global references: 797 Heap PSYoungGen total 162944K, used 48388K [0x00002aaadff40000, 0x00002aaaf2ab0000, 0x00002aaaf5490000) eden space 102784K, 47% used [0x00002aaadff40000,0x00002aaae2e81170,0x00002aaae63a0000) from space 60160K, 0% used [0x00002aaaeb850000,0x00002aaaeb850000,0x00002aaaef310000) to space 86720K, 0% used [0x00002aaae63a0000,0x00002aaae63a0000,0x00002aaaeb850000) PSOldGen total 699072K, used 699072K [0x00002aaab5490000, 0x00002aaadff40000, 0x00002aaadff40000) object space 699072K, 100% used [0x00002aaab5490000,0x00002aaadff40000,0x00002aaadff40000) PSPermGen total 21248K, used 9252K [0x00002aaab0090000, 0x00002aaab1550000, 0x00002aaab5490000) object space 21248K, 43% used [0x00002aaab0090000,0x00002aaab09993e8,0x00002aaab1550000)

  • 7 reasons you had to be at JavaOne Latin America 2012

    - by Bruno.Borges
Yesterday was 12/12/12, and everybody went crazy on Twitter with cool memes like this one. And maybe you are now wondering why I mentioned 7 (seven) on the blog title. Because I want to play numbers? Yes! Today is 7 days after JavaOne Latin America 2012 is over (... and I had to figure out an excuse for taking so long to blog about it...). So unless you were at JavaOne Latin America this year, here are 7 things you missed: OTN Lounge mini-theatreThere was a mini-theatre holding several lightning talks. We had people from SouJava JUG, GoJava JUG, Globalcode, and several other Java gurus and companies running demos, talks, and even more. For example, @drspockbr talked about the ScrumToys project, that demonstrates the power of JSF. Hands On Lab for JAX-RS and WebSocketsOne of the cool things to do during JavaOne is to come to these Hands On labs and really do something using new technologies with the help of experts. This one in particular, was covered by me, Arun Gupta, and Reza Rahman. The HOL had more people than laptops (and we had 48 laptops!) interested on understanding and learning about the new stuff that is coming within Java EE 7. Things like JAX-RS, Server-sent Events and WebSockets. Hey, if you want to try this HOL by yourself, it is available on Github, so go for it! If you have questions, just let me know! Java Community KeynoteThis keynote presented a lot of cool things like startups using Java in their projects, the Duke Awards, SouJava winning the JCP Outstanding Award, the Java Band, and even more! It was really a space where the Java community could present what they are doing and what they want to do. There's a lot of interest on the Adopt-a-JSR program and the Adopt-OpenJDK. There's also an Adopt-a-JavaEE-JSR program! Take a look if you want to participate and Make the Future Java. Java EE (JMS, JAX-RS) sessions from Reza Rahman, the HeavyMetal guyReza is a well know professional and Java EE enthusiast from the communitty who just joined Oracle this year. His sessions were very well attended, perhaps because of a high interest on the new things coming to Java EE 7 like JMS 2.0 and JAX-RS 2.0. If you want to look at what he did at this JavaOne edition, read his blog post. By the way, if you like Java and heavymetal, you should follow him on Twitter as well! :-) Java EE (WebSockets, HTML5) sessions from Arun Gupta, the GlassFish guyIf you don't know Arun Gupta, no worries. You will have time to know about him while you read his Java EE 6 Pocket Guide. Arun has been evangelizing Java EE for a long time, and is now spreading his word about the new upcoming version Java EE 7. He gave one talk about HTML5 Productivity on the Java EE 7 platform, and another one on building web apps with WebSockets. Pretty neat! Arun blogged about JavaOne Latin America as well. Read it here. Java Embedded and JavaFXIf there are two things that are really trending in the Java World right now besides Java EE 7, certainly they are JavaFX and Java Embedded. There were 14 talks covering Java Embedded, from Java Cards to Raspberry.pi, from Java ME to Java on your TV with Ginga-J. The Internet of Things is becoming true, and Java is the only platform today that can connect it all in an standardized and concise way. JavaFX gained a lot of attention too. There were 8 sessions covering what the platform has to offer in terms of Rich User Experience. The JavaFX Scene Builder is an awesome tool to start playing designing an UI, and coding for JavaFX is like coding Swing with 8 hands, one holding your coffee cup. You can achieve a lot, with your two hands (unless, you really have 8 hands, then you can achieve 4 times more :-). If you want to read more about JavaFX, go to Stephen Chin's blog post. GlassFish and Friends Party, 1st edition at JavaOne Lating AmericaThis is probably the thing that I'm most proud. We brought to Brasil the tradition of holding a happy hour for all GlassFish, Java EE friends. This party started almost 7 years ago in San Francisco, and it was about time to bring it to Brazil! The party happened on Tuesday night, right after JavaOne General Keynote, at the Tribeca Pub. We had about 80 attendees and met a lot of Java EE developers there! People from JUGs, Oracle, Locaweb and Red Hat showed up too, including some execs from Oracle that didn't resist and could not miss a party like this one.Lots of caipirinhas, beer and food to everyone, some cool music... even The Fish walking around the party with Juggy! You can see more photos from the party on an album I shared with the recently created GlassFish Brasil community on Google+ here (but you may be more interested in joining the GlassFish english community). There's also more pictures that Arun took and shared on this link. So now you may want to consider coming to Brazil next year! Java EE 7 is on its way, and Brazil is happily and patiently waiting for it, with a lot of enthusiasm. By the way, GlassFish and Java EE 6 just celebrated a Happy Birthday!

  • Servlet IOException when streaming a Byte Array

    - by MontyBongo
I occasionally get an IOException from a Servlet I have that writes a byte array to the outputstream in order to provide a file download capability. This download servlet has a reasonable amount of traffic (100k hits a month) and this exception occurs rarely, around 1-2 times a month. I have tried recreating the exception by using the exact same Base64 String and no exception is raised and the Servlet behaves as designed. Is this IO Exception being caused by something outside my applications control? For example a network issue or the user resetting the connection? I have tried to google the cause of an IOException at this point in the stack but to no avail. The environment is running Tomcat 5.5 on CentOS 5.3 with an Apache HTTP Server acting as a proxy using proxy_ajp. The reason for integrating this filter comes from Spring security FAQs: I'm using Tomcat (or some other servlet container) and have enabled HTTPS for my login page, switching back to HTTP afterwards. It doesn't work - I just end up back at the login page after authenticating. This happens because sessions created under HTTPS, for which the session cookie is marked as “secure”, cannot subsequently be used under HTTP. The browser will not send the cookie back to the server and any session state will be lost (including the security context information). Starting a session in HTTP first should work as the session cookie won't be marked as secure.

  • java.security.AccessControlException: access denied using Java Web Start

    - by killiancomputers
I am having some issues with accessing files using JWS (Java Web Start). The program adds a new label and image. The program runs fine on my local computer but gives me pages of errors when I run the program on my remote server using JWS. Here's a sample of the error: Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.io.FilePermission add2.png read) at java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(Unknown Source) This occurs even after making sure the images have read access. Ideas?

  • Problem with Java Applet <--> Javascript communication

    - by davr
I'm having trouble getting a Java Applet to communicate with the Javascript code on the page the applet is hosted on. It works sometimes, but othertimes it throws an obscure exception, that googling for has not turned up any useful information, besides a few Java bug reports that were never resolved (thanks Sun). Here is the code I am using: JSObject win = JSObject.getWindow(this); Object[] args = new Object[1]; args[0] = "test argument"; String result = (String) win.call("testJSfunc", args); // XXX Here is the exception I get on the line marked // XXX. Note that it is intermittent. Often it works, but sometimes it does not, using the same exact code. Reloading the page repeatedly will produce the error pretty quickly. netscape.javascript.JSException: No registered plugin for applet ID 1 at sun.plugin2.main.client.MessagePassingJSObject.newJSException(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.main.client.MessagePassingJSObject.waitForReply(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.main.client.MessagePassingJSObject.call(Unknown Source) at TestApplet.testCallJS(TestApplet.java:159) at TestApplet.init(TestApplet.java:139) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager$AppletExecutionRunnable.run(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) Is there another more stable way of communicating between Java and Javascript that I should be using?

  • Java implementing Exception Handling

    - by user69514
    I am trying to implement an OutOfStockException for when the user attempts to buy more items than there are available. I'm not sure if my implementation is correct. Does this look OK to you? public class OutOfStockException extends Exception { public OutOfStockException(){ super(); } public OutOfStockException(String s){ super(s); } } This is the class where I need to test it: import javax.swing.JOptionPane; public class SwimItems { static final int MAX = 100; public static void main (String [] args) { Item [] items = new Item[MAX]; int numItems; numItems = fillFreebies(items); numItems += fillTaxable(items,numItems); numItems += fillNonTaxable(items,numItems); sellStuff(items, numItems); } private static int num(String which) { int n = 0; do { try{ n=Integer.parseInt(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Enter number of "+which+" items to add to stock:")); } catch(NumberFormatException nfe){ System.out.println("Number Format Exception in num method"); } } while (n < 1 || n > MAX/3); return n; } private static int fillFreebies(Item [] list) { int n = num("FREEBIES"); for (int i = 0; i < n; i++) try{ list [i] = new Item(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("What freebie item will you give away?"), Integer.parseInt(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("How many do you have?"))); } catch(NumberFormatException nfe){ System.out.println("Number Format Exception in fillFreebies method"); } catch(ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException e){ System.out.println("Array Index Out Of Bounds Exception in fillFreebies method"); } return n; } private static int fillTaxable(Item [] list, int number) { int n = num("Taxable Items"); for (int i = number ; i < n + number; i++) try{ list [i] = new TaxableItem(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("What taxable item will you sell?"), Double.parseDouble(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("How much will you charge (not including tax) for each?")), Integer.parseInt(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("How many do you have?"))); } catch(NumberFormatException nfe){ System.out.println("Number Format Exception in fillTaxable method"); } catch(ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException e){ System.out.println("Array Index Out Of Bounds Exception in fillTaxable method"); } return n; } private static int fillNonTaxable(Item [] list, int number) { int n = num("Non-Taxable Items"); for (int i = number ; i < n + number; i++) try{ list [i] = new SaleItem(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("What non-taxable item will you sell?"), Double.parseDouble(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("How much will you charge for each?")), Integer.parseInt(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("How many do you have?"))); } catch(NumberFormatException nfe){ System.out.println("Number Format Exception in fillNonTaxable method"); } catch(ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException e){ System.out.println("Array Index Out Of Bounds Exception in fillNonTaxable method"); } return n; } private static String listEm(Item [] all, int n, boolean numInc) { String list = "Items: "; for (int i = 0; i < n; i++) { try{ list += "\n"+ (i+1)+".   • Defines JEE 5 the handling of commit error using bean managed transactions?

    - by marabol
I'm using glassfish 2.1 and 2.1.1. If I've a bean method annotated by @TransactionAttribute(value = TransactionAttributeType.REQUIRES_NEW). After doing some JPA stuff the commit fails in the afterCompletion-Phase of JTS. GlassFish logs this failure only. And the caller of this bean method has no chance to know something goes wrong. So I wonder, if there is any definition how a jee 5 server has to handle exceptions while commiting. I would expect any runtime exception. I'm using stateless beans. With SessionSynchronisation I could get the commit failue, if I use statefull beans. Is it possible to intercept, so I can throw an exception, that I've declared in my interface? This is the whole exception stacktrace: • Game works on netbeans but not outside netbeans in jar file?

    - by Michael Haywood
I am creating a basic game of 'Pong'. I have finished the game apart from a few glitches I need to remove. The game runs perfectly in netbeans but if I create a jar file errors come up causing it to not work. I am quite new to java but I believe it is something to do with my code looking for the images but the images have not been loaded up yet. Here is the error. How can I get this to work outside of netbeans in a jar file? • Java stored procedures in Oracle, a good idea?

    - by Scott A
I'm considering using a Java stored procedure as a very small shim to allow UDP communication from a PL/SQL package. Oracle does not provide a UTL_UDP to match its UTL_TCP. There is a 3rd party XUTL_UDP that uses Java, but it's closed source (meaning I can't see how it's implemented, not that I don't want to use closed source). An important distinction between PL/SQL and Java stored procedures with regards to networking: PL/SQL sockets are closed when dbms_session.reset_package is called, but Java sockets are not. So if you want to keep a socket open to avoid the tear-down/reconnect costs, you can't do it in sessions that are using reset_package (like mod_plsql or mod_owa HTTP requests). I haven't used Java stored procedures in a production capacity in Oracle before. This is a very large, heavily-used database, and this particular shim would be heavily used as well (it serves as a UDP bridge between a PL/SQL RFC 5424 syslog client and the local rsyslog daemon). Am I opening myself up for woe and horror, or are Java stored procedures stable and robust enough for usage in 10g? I'm wondering about issues with the embedded JVM, the jit, garbage collection, or other things that might impact a heavily used database.

So as the title states, I'm trying to start programming in C++ and Java. I took C++ and Java courses in high school and I'm trying to get back into it. Of course all I want to get working now is a simple "Hello World" program. Couple of things: I want to use an IDE. I've decided on Eclipse. I'm just confused about how I go about downloading/using it. For Java: I get stuck right on their download page. They show Eclipse Classic, Eclipse IDE for Java developers and Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers. I only programmed in Notepad and compiled in command prompt. Question 1: Which version of Eclipse should I download? Question 2: Do I need to install the Java JDK or does it come built into Eclipse? For C++: I guess I download the separate Eclipse IDE for C/C++ developers? I'm not too sure. I remember using Microsoft Visual for C++. I remember it being weird though. Anyways Question 3: Which version of Eclipse should I download? Question 4: Does C++ have a Development Kit or does it come built into Eclipse?

  • Java EE Website Planning Questions

    - by Tom Tresansky
I'm a .NET programming who is soon moving to the Java EE world. I have plenty of experience with .NET web technologies, web services, WebForms and MVC. I am also very familiar with the Java language, and have written a few servlets and modified a couple of JSP pages, but I haven't touched EE yet. I'd like to set up a public website using Java EE so I can familiarize myself with whats current. I'm thinking just a technology playground at this point with no particular purpose in mind. What Java technologies are the current hotness for this sort of thing? (For example, if someone asked me what I'd recommend learning to set up a new .NET site, I'd say use ASP MVC instead of WebForms and recommend LINQ-to-SQL as a quick, simple and widely used ORM.) So, what I'd like to know is: Is there a recommended technology for the presentation layer? Is JSP considered a good approach, or is there anything cleaner/newer/more widespread? Is Hibernate still widely used for persistence? Is it obsolete? Is there anything better out there? (I've worked with NHibernate some, so I wouldn't be starting from scratch.) Is cheap Java EE web hosting available? What should I know being a .NET web developer moving to the Java world?

  • Do you think Scala will be the dominant JVM langauge, ie be the next Java? [on hold]

    - by user1037729
From what I've read about Scala do far I think it has some nice features but I do not think it should be "the next Java". It might however end up being the next Java (due to fashion rather than fact) but lets not hope it does not... To me adds a lot of complexity over Java which is a simple and scalable language. Scala Pattern matching allows you to perform some type/value checking in a more concise way, this is possible in Java, Scala's pattern matching has a limit to it, you cannot continuously match deeper and deeper down the object graph, so why not just stick to Java and use decent invariants? Scala provides tuples, easy enough to make in Java, create a static factory method and it all reads nicely too. Scala provides mixins, why not just use composition? I believe Scala implicit's are bad, they can lead to code becoming complex and hard to maintain, explicitness is good. Scala provides closures, well they will be in Java 8 too. Scala has lazy keyword for lazy instantiation, this is easy enough to do in Java by calling a getter which creates the instance when needed, no hidden magic here. Scala can be used with AKKA, well so can Java, there is an Java AKKA implementation. Scala offers addition functional features but these can all be created in Java, there are many frameworks with have implemented functional features in Java. All in all Scala seems to offer is addition complexity and thats it...

  • Extracting user-friendly exception details in Java

    - by Jon
I've got a J2EE web application that I'm working on and when an exception occurs, I'd like to get some basic details about the exception and log it. The message that I'm logging should be pretty basic, something that might mean something to the people running the web server(s). Would using e.getMessage() be the best thing to log? Thanks.

  • is Java free for mobile development?

    - by exTrace101
Q1. I would like to know if it's free for a developer (I mean, if I have to pay no royalties to Sun/Oracle) to develop (Android) mobile apps in Java? After reading this snippet about use of Java field, I'm getting the impression that Java is not free for mobile development, is that right? .."General Purpose Desktop Computers and Servers" means computers, including desktop and laptop computers, or servers, used for general computing functions under end user control (such as but not specifically limited to email, general purpose Internet browsing, and office suite productivity tools). The use of Software in systems and solutions that provide dedicated functionality (other than as mentioned above) or designed for use in embedded or function-specific software applications, for example but not limited to: Software embedded in or bundled with industrial control systems, wireless mobile telephones, wireless handheld devices, netbooks, kiosks, TV/STB, Blu-ray Disc devices, telematics and network control switching equipment, printers and storage management systems, and other related systems are excluded from this definition and not licensed under this Agreement... and from http://www.excelsiorjet.com/embedded/ Notice : The Java SE Embedded technology license currently prohibits the use of Java SE in cell phones. Q2. how come these plethora of Android Java developers aren't paying Sun/Oracle a dime?

  • Trouble installing Java

    - by BRKsays
I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I wanted to install Java and so I downloaded the 32-bit self extracting .bin file from http://www.java.com and tried to install it according to their instruction. First I made the file an executable one. Then created /usr/java/. After that I have to run this command: ./jre-7u<version>-linux-i586.bin. But I'm stuck here. My Java version is Java 6 u32. When I enter the command it says "no such file or directory". What to do? Please help. Also I'm trying to install 32-bit Java on my 64-bit Precise. Could that possibly be the problem? I tried to follow second answer by Jonas Christensen. I tried to open it, it says file is an unknown type. I tried the terminal command: ./jre-6u31-linux-i586.bin. But it gave this: Unpacking... Checksumming... Extracting... ./jre-6u32-linux-i586.bin: 86: ./jre-6u32-linux-i586.bin: ./install.sfx.5736: not found Failed to extract the files. Please refer to the Troubleshooting section of the Installation Instructions on the download page for more information.

  • Java vs. C# - Productivity perspective

    - by Edin Dazdarevic
If you have a number of years experience in working with JAVA and a number of years experience in working with C# and .NET, I would value your opinion on software development productivity differences between these two environments. One of our customers is considering to technically replace their existing software solution. As the replacement will require approx. 10 - 15 man years work, a choice for JAVA or .NET, based on productivity differences between the them, may significantly influence the investment required and time-to-market. Would you be able to provide us, based on your honest and expert opinion, an indication of software development productivity differences between JAVA and C#/.NET? I would prefer to receive an answer as follows: My experience is based on X years experience working with JAVA and X years experience working with C#/.NET. JAVA is X% more productive then C#.NET or C#/.NET is X% more productive than JAVA if you take the the following into account . . . . . . . Thanks

  • Java: immutability, overuse of stack -- better data structure?

    - by HH
I overused hashSets but it was slow, then changed to Stacks, speed boost-up. Poly's reply uses Collections.emptyList() as immutable list, cutting out excess null-checkers. No Collections.emptyStack(). Combining the words stack and immutability, from the last experiences, gets "immutable stack" (probably not related to functional prog). Java Api 5 for list interface shows that Stack is an implementing class for list and arraylist, here. The java.coccurrent pkg does not have any immutable Stack data structure. The first hinted of misusing stack. The lack of immutabily in the last and poly's book recommendation leads way to list. Something very primitive, fast, no extra layers, with methods like emptyThing(). Overuse of stack and where I use it DataFile.java: public Stack<DataFile> files; FileObject.java: public Stack<String> printViews = new Stack<String>(); FileObject.java:// private static Stack<Object> getFormat(File f){return (new Format(f)).getFormat();} Format.java: private Stack<Object> getLine(File[] fs,String s){return wF;} Format.java: private Stack<Object> getFormat(){return format;} Positions.java: public static Stack<Integer[]> getPrintPoss(String s,File f,Integer maxViewPerF) Positions.java: Stack<File> possPrint = new Stack<File>(); Positions.java: Stack<Integer> positions=new Stack<Integer>(); Record.java: private String getFormatLine(Stack<Object> st) Record.java: Stack<String> lines=new Stack<String>(); SearchToUser.java: public static final Stack<File> allFiles = findf.getFs(); SearchToUser.java: public static final Stack<File> allDirs = findf.getDs(); SearchToUser.java: private Stack<Integer[]> positionsPrint=new Stack<Integer[]>(); SearchToUser.java: public Stack<String> getSearchResults(String s, Integer countPerFile, Integer resCount) SearchToUser.java: Stack<File> filesToS=Fs2Word.getFs2W(s,50); SearchToUser.java: Stack<String> rs=new Stack<String>(); View.java: public Stack<Integer[]> poss = new Stack<Integer[4]>(); View.java: public static Stack<String> getPrintViewsFileWise(String s,Object[] df,Integer maxViewsPerF) View.java: Stack<String> substrings = new Stack<String>(); View.java: private Stack<String> printViews=new Stack<String>(); View.java: MatchView(Stack<Integer> pss,File f,Integer maxViews) View.java: Stack<String> formatFile; View.java: private Stack<Search> files; View.java: private Stack<File> matchingFiles; View.java: private Stack<String> matchViews; View.java: private Stack<String> searchMatches; View.java: private Stack<String> getSearchResults(Integer numbResults) Easier with List: AllDirs and AllFs, now looping with push, but list has more pow. methods such as addAll [OLD] From Stack to some immutable data structure How to get immutable Stack data structure? Can I box it with list? Should I switch my current implementatios from stacks to Lists to get immutable? Which immutable data structure is Very fast with about similar exec time as Stack? No immutability to Stack with Final import java.io.*; import java.util.*; public class TestStack{ public static void main(String[] args) { final Stack<Integer> test = new Stack<Integer>(); Stack<Integer> test2 = new Stack<Integer>(); test.push(37707); test2.push(80437707); //WHY is there not an error to remove an elment // from FINAL stack?
