• wowza vs Flash Media Server (FMS / FMIS) - ease of integration with ASP.Net

  We're creating a web site offering one to many video chat and trying to decide on which of these streaming servers to go with. Looking at around 256kbps live streams, hoping to achieve at least 1000 simultaneous streams on one 8-core server. Wowza is cheaper (1k vs 5k for FMS), and appears to be used successfully by many sites (StreamLive, Justin.TV, etc.). However, some people have expressed that it may be more difficult to work with. I.e. fine-tuning it, less documentation, integration with ASP.Net code, etc. Wondering if anyone with real-world experience with either of these servers can advise regarding how easy or difficult to use and integrate they are for a site like this. Also wondering if there is any performance difference (lag, etc.).

  You're working freelance with several small remote clients and you want to have a meeting via webcam. What do you use? Please consider price, video quality, and minimum hassle for the clients. I'd prefer my clients don't have to pay anything or install anything for it to work. I'm already serving VNC in a Java applet, so something like that would be nice. Skype is awesome, and oovoo looks great, but I'd like to have more than one client on the line at once without them having to pay a subscription too. • Codeigniter MVC controller architecture

  I'm building a site using CodeIgniter that largely consists of static content (although there will be a relatively small CMS backend, and there's code to handle localization/internationalization based on the domain used to access it). Typically, in a situation like this, I'd use a Pages controller that is in charge of rendering static content, but as there are a fair number of pages on the site (30+) it'd quickly end up containing lots of methods (assuming one per page). Should I break my Pages controller into multiple controllers (that perhaps inherit from it) according to different sections of the site? Should I organize methods differently in the Pages controller? • Huge file in Clojure and Java heap space error

  I posted before on a huge XML file - it's a 287GB XML with Wikipedia dump I want ot put into CSV file (revisions authors and timestamps). I managed to do that till some point. Before I got the StackOverflow Error, but now after solving the first problem I get: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space error. • What SQL is being sent from a SqlCommand object

  I have a SqlCommand object on my c# based asp.net page. The SQL and the passed parameters are working the majority of the time. I have one case that is not working, I get the following error: String or binary data would be truncated. The statement has been terminated. I understand the error and but all the columns in the database should be long enough to hold everything being sent. My questions, Is there a way to see what the actual SQL being sent to the database is from SqlCommand object? I would like to be able to email the SQL when an error occurs. Thanks, Justin

• C# Image.Clone to byte[] causes EDIT.COM to open on Windows XP

  It appears that cloning a Image and converting it to a byte array is causing EDIT.COM to open up on Windows XP machines. This does not happen on a Windows 7 machine. The application is a C# .NET 2.0 application. Does anyone have any idea why this may be happening? • StringBuilder/StringBuffer vs. "+" Operator

  I'm reading "Better, Faster, Lighter Java" (by Bruce Tate and Justin Gehtland) and am familiar with the readability requirements in agile type teams, such as what Robert Martin discusses in his clean coding books. On the team I'm on now, I've been told explicitly not to use the "+" operator because it creates extra (and unnecessary) string objects during runtime. But this article: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-jtp01274.html Written back in '04 talks about how object allocation is about 10 machine instructions. (essentially free) It also talks about how the GC also helps to reduce costs in this environment. What is the actual performance tradeoffs between using "+," "StringBuilder," or "StringBuffer?" (In my case it is StringBuffer only as we are limited to Java 1.4.2.) StringBuffer to me results in ugly, less readable code, as a couple of examples in Tate's book demonstrates. And StringBuffer is thread-synchronized which seems to have its own costs that outweigh the "danger" in using the "+" operator. Thoughts/Opinions?

• Better to combine & minify javascript or use Google CDN?

  I am building a site which currently uses javascript from several sources: Group 1: Google Maps API v3 (hosted by Google) Group 2: jQuery & swfobject (hosted on Google CDN) Group 3: Several jQuery plugins and non-jquery javascript files (hosted on my server) I am using Justin Etheredge's tool SquishIt to combine and minify all the javascript files that are hosted on my server (group 3). I am wondering if the site would 'feel' faster to users if I were to host the files in (group 2) locally so that they can be combined with all the other files in (group 3) and requiring only one HTTP request for groups 2 & 3. This would mean that I don't get the benefits of the Google CDN however. Does anyone have any advice on this matter?

I used PDO query to use SELECT then fetch some values, it comes to a point that I need to fetch only some entries that within its start date and end date. This will return the row for id 1, however if I change the start_date to 2012-11-25, it will fail due to the first condition on AND. I'm really confuse on this since I am new to this, is there any built-in function to handle this kind of situation?

• FLIR: avoiding ugly page loads

  I'm building a site that makes extensive use of FLIR to allow the use of non-websafe fonts. However, pageloads are an ugly process, as first the HTML text version of each field loads and then (a few hundred milliseconds later) it's replaced by its FLIR image counterpart. Is there any way to avoid this sort of thing? I've got a client presentation in a few hours and I know it'll raise eyebrows. My situation is sort of related to this question which is in regards to sIFR, not FLIR. Any ideas? Thanks, Justin

• Read Mobi eBooks on Kindle for PC

  Do you use your PC as a eBook reader?  Kindle for PC makes it easy to read thousands of books from the Kindle Store on your computer. What you may not know is that is also works with .mobi format too, so you can increase the amount of books you can read. Amazon has jumpstarted the eBook market with their popular Kindle device.  Last fall Amazon unveiled Kindle for PC, and we reviewed how you can Read Kindle Books On Your Computer with Kindle for PC.  Whether or not you own a Kindle or other eBook reader, this is a great way to take advantage of the thousands of eBooks available from the Kindle Store today. It supports azw, prc, and tpz format, which are sold from the Kindle store, but it also supports Mobipocket (.mobi) eBooks that are not DRM protected.  Here’s how you can add them to Kindle for PC so you can easily read them on your PC Getting Started: First, make sure you have Kindle for PC (link below) installed on your computer. Sign in with your Amazon account when you first run it. Kindle for PC lets you easily read eBooks downloaded from the Kindle Store, but it doesn’t have any way to add other eBooks directly from the program. To add eBooks, you can sometimes download and double-click on the books, and they will open in Kindle for PC and be automatically added to the library.  However, this does not always seem to work. So instead, browse to your Documents folder (simply click on the Documents link on your Start menu), and double-click on the My Kindle Content folder. This folder contains all the Kindle books you have downloaded.  If you have other eBooks you would like to add to Kindle for PC, simply drag-and-drop or copy and paste them into this folder.  Here we have a .mobi formatted book downloaded from the Gutenberg Project that we’re dragging into the folder. Now, close and reopen Kindle for PC.  It should now show your new eBook right beside the eBooks you have downloaded from the Kindle Store. These eBooks work just the same as the ones downloaded from the Kindle store, and you can change font size and add bookmarks just as with other eBooks. The eBooks downloaded this way may show up with either a Amazon logo or a mobile device icon.  You should only see the mobile device icon on .mobi files formatted for mobile devices; other ones should show up with the Amazon logo.  In this screen, Pilgrim’s Progress is a standard .mobi book, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a mobipocket book, and the others are downloaded from the Kindle Store. Conclusion This is a great way to read eBooks from across the internet on Kindle for PC.  Wikipedia’s Kindle page has a list of websites that offer eBooks formatted for the Kindle, so be sure to check it out for more books.   Here is a simple and complete example of how to perform joins on two collections with LINQ. I wrote it for a friend to show him, in one simple file, the power of LINQ queries and anonymous objects. In the file below, there are two simple data classes defined: Person and Item. In the beginning of the main method, two collections are created. Note that the Item's OwnerId field reference the PersonId of a Person object. • Query on object id in VQL

  I'm currently working with the versant object database (using jvi), and have a case where I need to query the database based on an object id. What I'm trying to achieve is something along the lines of Employee employee = new Employee("Mr. Pickles"); session.commit(); FundVQLQuery q = new FundVQLQuery(session, "select * from Employee employee where employee = $1"); q.bind(employee); q.execute(); However, I'm finding out the hard way (I get an EVJ_NOT_A_VALID_KEY_TYPE error thrown at me) that this is infact not the way to do it. Anyone got any experience in working with VQL? Your help is much apreciated! A small clarification: The problem is I'm running some performance tests on the database using the pole position framework, and one of the tests in that framework requires me to fetch an object from the database using either an object reference or a low level object id. Thus, I'm not allowed to reference specific fields in the employee object, but must perform the query on the object in its entirety. So, it's not allowed for me to go "select * from Employee e where e.id = 4", I need it to use the entire object. • Windows 7 wireless not seeing any networks

  I think I have managed to confuse Windows 7. When I did the install, I had the network cable plugged in to my router, but the wireless card was also enabled. During the install, Windows 7 seemed to see my wireless network and even asked me for the WEP key. I know that it used the WEP key because I initially entered an invalid one and it gave me an error. Then the network said "SoAndSoWireless Connected". However, when I unplug or disable my wired network card, then I have no internet, and it can't see any networks. When I plug in the wired network card, it says "SoAndSoWireless Connected". Under Network and Internet Network Connections I have "Local Area Connection" and "Wireless Network Connection". The wired one's status is "SoAndSoWireless" and the wireless status is "Not Connected". Also, the wireless connection can't seem to see any other wireless networks in the area and I know there are tons. My neighbors have several. I've somehow seemingly confused Windows 7 into thinking that my wired network card is my wireless card or something. Any ideas on how to un-confuse it? This is a desktop machine by the way, if it matters. EDIT: Ah, I think part of the problem is that I named my network accidentally the same as the name of the wireless network being broadcast by the wireless router. So that might be why it says that name on the hard-wired connection. Perhaps the drivers just are completely not working for the wireless card. Thanks, ~ Justin

  From time to time, I see collections of suspect "File not found" errors in my Apache logs, basically using the pattern File does not exist: /var/www/file, referer: http://my.server.com/file In human terms: The file was not found, though it referenced here itself. A clear hacking attempt, as that's hardly possible (and the REQUEST_URIs often enough suggest the same). In my eyes a clear case for fail2ban – if I could get backreferences to work here: failregex = ^%(_apache_error_client)s File does not exist: /var/www(.+), referer: http://.+\1$ (Justin Case: above examples assume the DIRECTORY_ROOT of that webserver being /var/www) I googled for hours, searched the fail2ban wiki up and down – but nowhere I could find a statement concerning backreferences in its filters. Are they not supported, or did I do it the wrong way? • Need help trying to allow my remote PowerShell script to run on my Windows 2008 r2 Server

  I've got a Windows 2008 r2 server with Sql Server 2008 r2 installed. I've got a Sql Server Agent which tries to run a Powershell job, but fails :- Message Executed as user: FooServer\SqlServerUser. A job step received an error at line 1 in a PowerShell script. The corresponding line is '& '\\polanski\Backups\Database\7ZipFooDatabases.ps1'' Correct the script and reschedule the job. The error information returned by PowerShell is: 'File \\polanski\Backups\Database\7ZipFooDatabases.ps1 cannot be loaded. The file \\polanski\Backups\Database\7ZipFooDatabases.ps1 is not digitally signed. The script will not execute on the system. Please see "get-help about_signing" for more details.. '. Process Exit Code -1. The step failed. Ok. So i run Powershell on that server then set the execution policy to unrestricted. To check .. PS C:\Users\theUser> Get-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted PS C:\Users\theUser> Kewl :) but it still doesn't work :( Ok ... what happens when i try to run the powershell from the command line.... SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS is calculating how many rows are there and will be using for pagination, so it counts total records, even tho only 20 is showing. DISTINCT will stop the repeated row to display. username is from user table. album, album_permission. its checking if album is private and if it is, then check if user has permission, by user_id. i think rest is easy to understand, but if you need to know more about it, then please ask. im really frustrated by this query and site is very slow or not opening sometimes cause of this query. please help

How can the lambda line be used which will sort the list, for an arbitrary number of keys that are passed in to the multikeysort function, and take into consideration that the sortkeys may have any number of keys and those that need reversed sorts will be identified with a '-' before it?
