  How can I remove or autohide to 0 the bottom Gnome panel from a live CD and autostart AWN to replace it? So far i kinda, found some commands to autohide to 0 the bootm panel gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/panel/default_setup/toplevels/bottom_panel/auto_hide 1 gconftool-2 --set /apps/panel/default_setup/toplevels/bottom_panel/auto_hide --type bool 1 gconftool-2 -t bool -s /apps/panel/default_setup/toplevels/bottom_panel/auto_hide true but i don't know which one will do what i want.

• Should I install ubuntu on USB instead of HDD dual-boot?

  I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed as dual-boot OS on top of Vista on my laptop. Hacked the grub settings to default to Vista (instead of the default Ubuntu -- pain) on startup, and all was OK for occasional Ubuntu use for past 6 months. Then last week I got a strange message about 'lack of disk space' (~50MB free) when installing pxyplot, even though there was still about 6GB free disk space when I checked later. Then today the Ubuntu wouldn't load at all, and checking the HDD partitions in Vista it looked like the 15GB Ubuntu partition was now three smaller partitions! So, I got rid of those partitions and expanded the Vista partition to use the reclaimed space. Now can't restart ('grub rescue' appears and doesn't 'rescue' anything), so I'll have to do a boot recovery using a Vista installation CD. (Not a particularly user-friendly failure mode of the dual-boot installation!) I now have to decide to either a) try installing ubuntu on the HDD again, but don't want to stuff up my Vista ever again, as that is my most used OS, or b) install Ubuntu on a 16GB USB 3.0 stick. Apparently performance from USB won't be as good as from HDD, and running OS from USB stick does lots of r/w so the stick may fail after a few years! Perhaps installing Ubuntu on live USB and setup to then run in RAM would alleviate the performance/USB lifespan problems? If I create a live-USB for Ubuntu OS, will it boot off that when I restart the laptop with it plugged in? Or will I have to change the laptop setting for boot-order whenever I want to boot Ubuntu instead of Vista (that would be even more painful than the grub default boot order putting Ubuntu ahead of the existing Vista OS!) -- update: I recovered my Vista setup using Iolo SystemMechanic Disaster Recovery Tool, and created a bootable USB of Ubuntu 13.10 on an 8GB USB3.0 pendrive, with 4GB of 'persistence' to allow saving of settings, install some packages etc. It worked OK for a couple of test boots, but once I changed the time and desktop wallpaper, the next Ubuntu reboot crashed and I then couldn't get it to boot successfully. So I decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as a dual-boot again, but this time instead of partitioning the HDD and installing from an ISO DVD I used the wubi.exe tool to install Ubuntu as a dual-boot. Worked very well, although one oddity was that, despite asking how big the make the partition (20GB), the installed Ubuntu appears to be happily installed somewhere within the Vista NTFS file system (no partition shows up in Windows disk manager, and in Ubuntu disk management tool the entire 133 GB of HDD is showing, with ~40GB free space). A nice feature of installing the dual-boot using wubi is that the laptop now uses Windows boot manager on startup, with Vista as the default OS and Ubuntu happily listed as second on the list. So far so good.

• Can't install alternate CD from USB?

  Hi im trying to install ubuntu 12.04 with full hard disk encryption. After downloading and installing the Ubuntu live CD, I learned that truecrypt doesnt support full disk encryption on linux. I also learned that the best way to get "nearly full disk encryption" on ubuntu is by installing it from the alternate install CD. I tried that, but something is wrong with my CD reader/burner so it doesnt boot up when i insert the cd. My thought here was to take the .iso that I downloaded on my unencrypted Ubuntu system, use Unetbootin to make the usb drive. The usb drive used for this is exactly the same brand as one that I know has worked with a previous ubuntu live system on the same computer. I also used unetbootin for that usb, but I created it from windows that time. The usb stick boots up fine and i get through the first couple of steps in the installation process. However, After a while I get a "box" with the following error message "Load Installer components from CD" There was a problem reading data from the CD-ROM. Please make sure it is in the drive. If retrying does not work, you should check the integrity of your CD-ROM. "Failed to copy file from CD-ROM. Retry? " Then I cant get any further. I googled a lot and found this page which seems to tackle this very problem: http://www.dotkam.com/2010/11/29/ins...mage-from-usb/ I tried to do what it said. After pressing TAB, I wrote : cdrom-detect/try-usb=true without quotes because that's what i think is right. When I press TAB, there already is a text saying : /ubnkern initrd=/ubninit vga=788 -- quiet which can be removed. I have tried to both delete the text before the "--" and just inserting cdrom-detect/try-usb=true before it. Any idea of what can be wrong? I would like to do a full system encryption, or as full as it is possible. I dont want to just encrypt my /home folder. Maybe this isn't the easiest way. I use SanDisk usb sticks. I know there is a problem with U3 launcher on some SanDisks, but I never had to remove U3 before from similar disks, and the alternate install does boot up, so I dont think using U3 removal would help me. Any help or indication to an easier way to do this would be appreciated

  Hello, I am looking for a Live Video Streaming solution, The clients will be able to watch the video with a plugin (Flash or Silverlight), or a Standalone application (Windows Media Player, FLV, etc). But I can't choose between Microsoft Solution (Windows Media Server (MMS, RTSP) + Silverlight as client) or the Adobe solution (Flash Media Server (RTMP) + Flash/Flex). The streaming is for short duration cast and will not be online 24/24h. I tried both, and I found the cheaper version of FMS don't provide security to prevent users to register as published (You have to write custom module...), the Windows Media Server provide this function. We already have Windows Server licences. (So Windows Media Server will be "Free") What do you recommend ? What is the best between Flash or Silverlight for Live Video Streaming ? Thank you !

• Django TemplateSyntaxError only on live server (templates exist)

  I'm getting a strange error that only occurs on the live server. My Django templates directory is set up like so base.html two-column-base.html portfolio index.html extranet base.html index.html The portfolio pages work correctly locally on multiple machines. They inherit from either the root base.html or two-column-base.html. However, now that I've posted them to the live box (local machines are Windows, live is Linux), I get a TemplateSyntaxError: "Caught TemplateDoesNotExist while rendering: base.html" when I try to load any portfolio pages. It seems to be a case where the extends tag won't work in that root directory (???). Even if I do a direct_to_template on two-column-base.html (which extends base.html), I get that error. The extranet pages all work perfectly, but those templates all live inside the /extranet folder and inherit from /extranet/base.html. Possible issues I've checked: file permissions on the server are fine the template directory is correct on the live box (I'm using os.path.dirname(os.path.realpath(__file__)) to make things work across machines) files exist and the /templates directories exactly match my local copy removing the {% extends %} block from the top of any broken template causes the templates to render without a problem manually starting a shell session and calling get_template on any of the files works, but trying to render it blows up with the same exception on any of the extended templates. Doing the same with base.html, it renders perfectly (base.html also renders via direct_to_template) Django 1.2, Python 2.6 on Webfaction. Apologies in advance because this is my 3rd or 4th "I'm doing something stupid" question in a row. The only x-factor I can think of is this is my first time using Mercurial instead ofsvn. Not sure how I could have messed things up via that. EDIT: One possible source of problems: local machine is Python 2.5, live is 2.6. Here's a traceback of me trying to render 'two-column-base.html', which extends 'base.html'. I would like to use System.Net.PeerToPeer namespace, but everything I can find about it is MSDN which I can't read without getting mad. Or maybe using "old-school" TCP/IP would more efficient?   I happens to find this nice article explaining how OpenID works. Clearly, OpenID consumer and OpenID server transfer information through URL query string. I'm wondering how Live ID accomplish similar functionality. It seems the info is not exchanged through query string in URL. And, since Live ID login server have different domain name from consumer domain, it is not applicable to transfer info through cookie. I tried to google tutorial of Live ID, but the result is full of jargon and hard to understand. Is there any easy-to-understand tutorial about How Live ID works?

I usually just make a backup of the new DB, blow the old one away and Restore my updated one. But now I have data I need to preserve. Most of the current tables have changed, in that extra columns have been added, all existing columns are still there and unchanged. I have access to Management Studio. • Getting live traffic/visitor analytics when using a reverse proxy

  I'm in process of implementing Varnish as a reverse proxy for a Ruby on Rails app and I'm using Google Analytics (JS/client side script to record visitor data) but it's several hours delayed so its useless for knowing what's going on now. I need at a glance live data that includes referring traffic and what current req/sec is. Right now I am using a simple Rack middleware application to do the live stats (gist.github.com/235745) but if the majority of traffic hits Varnish, Rack will never be hit so this won't work. The closest solution I've found so far is http://www.reinvigorate.net/ but it's in beta (there are also no implementation details on their front page). Does Varnish have traffic logs that I can custom format to match my Apache logs so I can combine them, or will I have to roll my own JS implementation like GA that shows the data in real time?

  This is a problem that I experience for a couple of years now.. I'm having the latest version of Windows Live Mail. The overall behavior works just fine, but when I want to click 'Allow Sender' in the yellow bar above my e-mail, the text button does nothing. My mouse pointer turns into a finger hand, but the click event does nothing.. Sometimes with other e-mails, the button works and the yellow bar dissappears.. I have also experienced this in previous versions of Windows Live Mail.. Does anybody know what it could be..

• Remove Live ID authentication from user account

  I've just run in to a really annoying issue with Windows 8.1 - it seems I cannot remove the need to use Live ID credentials from an account without completely deleting that account. I know the process to do it - use the Disconnect link from the Accounts-Your account screen. The trouble comes when you get to the Switch to a local account screen, it will not let you enter the current account for the user name, instead you must enter a new one thus creating a new user account. Can I revert back to using just a local login without having to recreate the account? It seems quite retarded that I have to recreate the account, as deep down the only change required is which credential provider is used to authenticate the login. (Note that this Live ID linkage was created by using the Windows Store, not as a result of an upgrade from 8 to 8.1).

  I have a live video streaming in my server using nginx + php. the php file reas a live streaming and it directly sends it to the client. I have only one problem. The problem is that i want each request to be in a new process of php-fpm. In a few words i don't want to have idle timeout for a process but instead i want them to close instant when a request is being closed. With idle timeout i have huge problems which are hard to explain at the moment but i'm really sure that if i disable the idle timeout everything will be perfect. Is there any way to do this? I'm using on demand php-fpm

  Apache webserver setup added: AddType application/x-mpegURL .m3u8 AddType video/MP2T .ts to "httpd.conf" file. Movie file preparation I have 3 movie files (9mb - 25mb each). Used QuickTime to convert movies into iPhone format. Used mediafilesegmenter to convert .m4v into 10-second segments of .ts files, with an accompanying .m3u8 file. Placed these in a folder on webserver. iPhone App implementation Created UIWebView whose URL points to http://71.191.59.68/~yujean/stream.html Simulator accesses the site and streams the movie-files just fine. Question Will I still get rejected by apple for bandwidth issues over the 3G and/or Edge network? Do I need to somehow check which network the end-user is on first? And then provide a different movie accordingly? If so, how do I do that ...? Thank you in advance, Eugene
