  • Verification of files on backup media - after the backup

    I have a system in place where I back up my work files daily to a portable hard drive. I actually have two portable hard drives - one is stored off-site and I swap them regularly. I also keep my family photos and other historical files backed up, but I only back the photos up occasionally (ie when I have new photos). The backup media is for backup only, and it is unlikely I will ever read the files from the backup media unless a disaster occurs and I lose the master. It worries me that my backed up files could become corrupt without me knowing it. It is also feasible that my master files could become corrupt, and eventually the corrupt files would be replicated to the backup media. I'm currently using Cobian Backup, but I'm open to alternatives. Is there a tool I can use to confirm that the backed up files are identical to the files that were first copied? I know it would be possible to generate a checksum and periodically validate the backup files against the original checksum, but I'm looking for a tool which will do this automatically.

  • Windows XP consuming drive letters

    This one's a bit of a stumper. I'm running XP SP3, current with all fixes, etc. My problem is that I can assign a drive letter to a container file (explained below), it works just fine. But once I close the container, the drive letter is no longer available until the next boot. I've got some confidential data that I've placed in a container volume. I've used TrueCrypt (www.truecrypt.com) and FreeOTFE (www.freeotfe.org), with both installed and portable versions for both, with the same result. I open the container file, assign it to a drive letter (say R:), and run some portable apps that are within the volume. When I'm done, I close the container, and the drive letter is released. Fine so far. However, when I attempt to re-open it, the previous drive letter (in this case R:) is no longer available. It's not mapped to anything, it's just unavailable. Even attempting something like "subst R: C:\" returns "Invalid Parameter - R:". I can use the S: drive, no problem, but the next day I have to use T:, then U:, etc. Eventually, I have to reboot to reclaim all of of the drive letters. Unfortunately, everything I've read about drive letters relates to USB assignments, which doesn't apply here. I've tried the "show hidden" command (set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1) with no success. And the Disk Management tool doesn't apply either, since it's not a physical drive. Does anyone know where Windows keeps the list of drive letters? And is there anything short of a reboot that can be used to reset it?

  • Toshiba External Hard Drive freezes computer

    I bought a Toshiba Canvio Basics E05A032BAU2XK Portable External 320GB 2.5 Hard Drive: My computer has two Os's on it Win7 and Win XP. I need both. The main one I use is XP. When booting my computer in any OS the computer and hard drive work fine. The same holds true for plugging in the hard drive while running Win7. However, when running WinXP, if the hard drive gets plugged in the computer freezes(my main point is that the HD is portable so it is essential that it does not do this, as I said I usually run XP). After reading some online forums I was informed that there is a compatibility issue with the newest version of Eset Smart Security(I still don't understand this because it works fine in Win7 or when connected on boot...). I disabled the AV and plugged in the HD... Walla! The comnputer did not freeze. However the disk is not recognized in explorer or disk management. In device manager I removed the device and did a scan and installation of device failed. It pretty much sounds like a driver issue but I cannot find any drivers for this HD. In fact, Toshiba claims that there are no downloadable drivers for it and that XP should take care of the drivers itself. What to do? As far as I can tell, all other USB devices work just fine on both OS. Please Help!

My question is: Can I install it on more than one PC/laptop at home? One of the directory supposed to treat .htm as php yet got text, created another directory and edit a phpinfo, still another text, browse to phpmyadmin, viola, works fine Suspect Does Apache honour XP security and permission ? If so, this is a single user computer. Does Apache dont like my new hard disk/new place ? Why it doesnt execute the php in new directory but happily execute in old folder ?   • Best solution top keep data secure

    What is the simplest and most elegant way of storing a small amount of data in a reasonably secure way? I am not looking for ridiculous levels of advanced encryption (AES-256 is more than enough) and I am only looking to encrypt a small number of files. The files I wish to encrypt are mostly comprised of password lists and SSH keys for servers. Unfortunately it is impossible to keep track of ever changing passwords for my servers (and SSH keys) and so need to keep a list of the passwords. Obviously this list needs to be secure, and also portable (I work from multiple locations). At the moment, I use a 10MB encrypted disk image on my mac (std .dmg AES-256) and just mount it whenever I need access to the data. To my knowledge this is very secure and I am very happy using it. However, the data is not very portable. I would like to be able to access my data from other machines (especially ones running linux), and I am aware that there are quite a few issues trying to mount an encrypted .dmg on linux. An alternative I have considered is to create a tar archive containing the files and use gpg --symmetric to encrypt it, but this is not a very elegant solution as it requires gpg to be installed on every system. So, what over solutions exist, and which ones would you consider to be the most elegant? Ty

  • USB Drive that simultaneously connects to more than one computer

    Background: I have a portable USB drive that I use to make sure I have access to common files whenever at home, work, travel etc for cases when I may not have Internet/Network access of any kind. There are some cases when I have to work simultaneously on a laptop and a desktop computer, and for those cases I usually have to unplug this USB hard drive and move it between the two. Question: dual-computer USB drive? Is there a USB-based solution that would enable me to use this portable drive between two computers simultaneously? If there is not a USB-based solution, does anyone have alternative suggestions, consistent with the underlying rationale? Rationale: Sometimes I have to work on a desktop computer with locked-down networking capabilities (such as at the local photocopy shop) and it can be difficult to get a network configuration that allows dual-computer access without breaking things, or accidentally making my USB drive visible to the entire network. Basically what I need is a very simply LAN that is guaranteed to work regardless of the rules or constraints set by the network administrator for wherever I happen to be at the time.   • Dissertation about website and database security - in need of some pointers

    Hi, I am on my dissertation in my final year at university at the moment. One of the areas I need to research is security - for both websites and for databases. I currently have sections on the following: Website Form security - such as data validation. This section is more about preventing errors made by legitimate users as much as possible rather than stopping hackers, for example comparing a field to a regular expression and giving them meaningful feedback on any errors which did occur so as to stop it happening again. Constraints. For example if a value must be true or false then use a checkbox. If it is likely to be one of several values then use a dropdown or a set of radio boxes, and so on. If the value is unpredictable then use regular expressions to limit what characters they are allowed to enter, and to restrict the length of the string, and sometimes to limit the format (such as for dates / times, post codes and so on). Sometimes you can limit permissions to the form. This is on the occasion that you know exactly who (whether it be peoples names or a group of people - such as administrators or employees) is going to need access to the form. Restricting permissions will stop members of the public from being able to access the form. Symbols or strings which could be used maliciously or cause the website to act incorrectly (such as the script tag) should be filtered out or html encoded. Captcha images can be used to prevent automated systems from filling in and submitting the form. There are some hacks for file uploads - such as using double extensions - which can allow hackers to upload malicious files. Databases (this is nowhere near done yet but the sections I have planned are listed below) SQL statements vs stored procedures Throwing an error when one of the variables contains particular characters or groups of characters (I cant remember what characters they are, but I have seen a message thrown back at me before where I have tried to enter html or something into a text area). SQL Injection - and ways around it, with some examples. Does anyone have any hints and tips on where I could go for some decent, reliable information either about these areas or about other areas of security that I could cover? Thanks in advance.   • RenderAction not finding action method in current controller in current area

    I'm creating an ASP.NET MVC 2 (RTM) project that uses areas. The Index action of the Home controller of one area needs to use RenderAction to generate a sub-section of the page. The action called is also defined in the same Home controller. So the call should just be: <% Html.RenderAction("List") %> However, I get an exception: A public action method 'List' was not found on controller 'RareBridge.Web.Areas.Events.Controllers.HomeController'. Note that I'm not in the "Events" area! I'm in a completely different area. If I remove the "Events" home controller, then the exception still occurs but names a different controller (still not the one I want it to call). I've also tried providing the controller name and area to the RenderAction method, but the same exception occurs. What is going on here? BTW: I am using Autofac as my IoC container

    Hello. I want to estimate the noise in an image. Let's assume the model of an Image + White Noise. Now I want to estimate the Noise Variance. My method is to calculate the Local Variance (3*3 up to 21*21 Blocks) of the image and then find areas where the Local Variance is fairly constant (By calculating the Local Variance of the Local Variance Matrix). I assume those areas are "Flat" hence the Variance is almost "Pure" noise. Yet I don't get constant results. Is there a better way? Thanks.

I need to control access to each franchise's services based on the roles a user is assigned for that franchise. 4 examples: Receptionist should be able to book service jobs in for her "Atlantic Seaboard" franchise, but not do any reporting. Technician should be able to alter service jobs, but not modify invoices. Managers should be able to apply discount to invoices for jobs within their stores. Owner should be able to pull reports for any franchises he owns. Where should franchise-level access control fit in between the Data - Services - Web layer? If it belongs in my Controllers, how should I best implement it? Controller Implementation Access Control with [Authorize] attribute If there was just one franchise involved, I could simply limit access to a controller action like so: [Authorize(Roles="Receptionist, Technician, Manager, Owner")] public ActionResult CreateJob(Job job) { ... } And since franchises don't just pop up over night, perhaps this is a strong case to use the new Areas feature in ASP.NET MVC 2? Or would this lead to duplicate Views? Controllers, URL Routing & Areas Assuming Areas aren't used, what would be the best way to determine which franchise's data is being accessed? I thought of this: {franchise}/{controller}/{action}/{id} or is it better to determine a job's franchise in a Details(...) action and limit a user's action with [Authorize]: {job}/{id}/{action}/{subaction} {invoice}/{id}/{action}/{subaction} which makes more sense if any user could potentially have access to more than one franchise without cluttering the URL with a {franchise} parameter.   • foreach loop corrupting my array?

    Explanation I have a multidimensional array that is iterated over to created a categorized view of people with different research interests. The main array look something like this: Array ( ... ['Cell Biology'] => Array(4 elements) ['Molecular'] => Array(6 elements) ['Biology Education'] => Array(14 elements) ['Plant Biology'] => Array(19 elements) <--- Last element in array ) I know that the entire array is intact and correctly structured. The only information that is inside these array is an user id, like so: Array ('Plant Biology') 19 elements ( [0] => 737 [1] => 742 [2] => 748 ... ) My problem is that after i run the main array through a foreach loop the last 'sub-array' gets messed up. By messed up I mean that what you see about instead look like: String (13 characters) 'Plant Biology' This is without doing at all anything inside the loop with to the array that gets corrupted. Any tips to what it might be? This compiles ok recordList = recordList.Where(r => r.Areas.Where(a => a.Area == "Z").Count() > 0); but this doesn't recordList = recordList.Where(r => r.Areas.Where(a => a.Area <= "Z").Count() > 0); giving these errors Cannot convert lambda expression to type 'string' because it is not a delegate type Delegate 'System.Func' does not take '1' arguments Operator '<=' cannot be applied to operands of type 'string' and 'string' != works ok, by any sort of less than or greater than operation fails.

    I am using Asp.Net MVC 2 - RC w/ Areas. I am receiving an ambigious controller name exception due to having same controller name in two different areas. I've read Phil Haack's post I can't figure out the syntax when trying to use UrlHelper (I have an extensions class). e.g. public static string MyAreaHome(this UrlHelper helper) { return helper.RouteUrl("ARoute", new { controller = "Home", action = "Index" }); } I've tried the obvious of adding namespace="mynamespace" but that didn't work, it just added the namespace to the url. Thanks for any help.

  • ASP.NET MVC - separating large app

    I've been puzzled by what I consider a contradiction in terms: ASP.NET MVC claims to be furthering and supporting the "separation of concern" motto, which I find a great idea. However, it seems there's no way of separating out controllers, model or views into their own assembly, or separating areas into assemblies. With the fixed Controller, Model and View folders in your ASP.NET MVC, you're actually creating a huge hodge podge of things. Is that the separation of concerns, really?? Seems like quite the contrary to me. So what I'm wondering: how can I create an ASP.NET MVC solution that will either separate out controllers, the model, and the folders full of views, into separate assemblies? how can I put areas of ASP.NET MVC 2 into separate assemblies? or how else do you manage a large ASP.NET MVC app - which has several dozen or even over a hundred controllers, lots of model and viewmodel classes, and several hundred views?

  • Navigating back to "Home" from an area (MVC2)

    I have a few areas in my application that are relatively independent (all navigated to from the master page). So, as of now, I am simply using the "default" MVC2 template (the one you get when you create a new MVC2 project). So the menu looks like this: HOME AREA1 AREA2 AREA3 AREA4 .... ABOUT Now, when I first load up the page, I am on the "HOME", and I can click on the ABOUT without issue. I can navigate to any of the areas as well, however, once I navigate to an area page, I cannot get back to my home or about pages (404 not found). When I navigate to them, and click on about, the address bar shows .../AreaX/Home/Home instead of Home/Home as I would expect. I expect that is has something to do with my routing, but Im not completely sure. I have added/changed nothing with the default routing (which is probably the issue!). Any thoughts?

    On a web page I'm creating, I have a div with a background image. I overlay some text over the image that I'll be changing frequently, so that's why I'm using a background image and real text instead of an img tag that contains the text. The background image contains some click-able areas, so I need an image map. I think the best way to do this is to have another overlay div with a transparent image, and have an image map for the transparent image that corresponds to the background area click-able areas. Am I on the right track, or is there a better way?

  • Adding a transparent bitmap to a windows button

    It's a while since I've done this, but I'm trying to add a custom button graphic to a windows button, with some transparent areas. I've tried various schemes but can't seem to get the transparent areas to show. Here's my code: hbmpUpDisabled = LoadImage(instance,MAKEINTRESOURCE(IDB_UPARROWDISABLED), IMAGE_BITMAP, 0, 0, LR_DEFAULTSIZE | LR_LOADTRANSPARENT | LR_LOADMAP3DCOLORS ); SendMessage(GetDlgItem(hWndDlg, IDC_MOVEUP),BM_SETIMAGE,(WPARAM)IMAGE_BITMAP,(LPARAM)hbmpUpDisabled); Does anyone notice any problems here? It works if my bitmap is a 1-bit bitmap. I couldn't get a 32 bit bitmap to work, and I'm not sure how to setup a 24 bit or 8 bit bitmap to do it.... I tried a custom 255,0,255 color (which IIRC is a default transparent value), but so far no joy....

    I need to be able to selectively invalidate multiple (about 20) rectangles on the screen for performance reasons, so tried the following: Vector<Rect> myRects = new Vector<Rect>(); // ... add some Rects to myRects for (Rect r : myRects) { invalidate(r); } However this seems to invalidates a union of all the Rect's, forming one large rectangle which covers all of small ones I'm trying to invalidate. How can one invalidate multiple areas on the screen, and only those areas?

    I have a Contacts controller in the main/top area, and I have an area named "Contacts". I get POST 404s to the Contacts controller if I register my areas before I register my top-level routes: protected void Application_Start() { AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas(); ModelBinders.Binders.DefaultBinder = new NullStringBinder(); RouteConfig.RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes); } And, if I register my areas after my routes, my 404s to the Contacts controller goes away, but my routes to the Contacts area are now 404s. ...lots of duplicate controller name questions logged, but I haven't found a specific scenario where the area is the same name as the controller. ...probably an easy fix. Would appreciate help. :-D

But when I do this I get 'undefined is not a function' referring to the line this.uuid = generateUUID(); in function Droppable() {...} Why is that?
