• Ubuntu 13.04/13.10 - low graphics mode/black screen after login

  Since last week, my Ubuntu 13.04 installation started booting up in low graphics mode out of nowhere. I tried a number of solutions found on this site but to no avail. The other night, I decided to upgrade to 13.10 to see if the issue would be fixed in the process. Since then, the system starts fine, but when I login to my account, I'm just presented with a black screen. I switched to the terminal and did any necessary updates, but to no avail. I don't even know where to start debugging this issue, so I'd appreciate if someone could point me towards the first place to start looking?

• Reboot to fail safe mode when root file system is full

  I have a system running on a 4GB Nandrive. When the drive is full, Ubuntu will not boot :( and I have to plug in a rescue thumbdrive to delete files. The problem is the hardware is not easily accessible except via network. Is there a sure-fire way to boot Ubuntu, say, to RAM or other means when the disk is full or on any other errors in the normal boot process? In other words, is there a fallback rescue boot mode with networking? Thanks for any advice.

• how to change dolphin's select region of a file/folder (in detail view mode)

  Since nautilus has removed the dual pane. So I turn to dolphin. I am wondering how to change the default select behavior in detail view mode? Now to select a file/folder, my cursor has to hover over that file/folder and then the left click will take effect, but I much prefer the nautilus way, that is as long as your cursor is in the same row of that file/folder, left click picks up that item. This I think is more robust for user selection, it is faster. Any ideas how to achieve this in dolphin?

  Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 12.04 because of some previous problems. I had to recover files through Photorec. But it filled my whole disk overnight and didn't even finish. When I turn on my notebook, there's an error The system is runnning in low-graphics mode (don't know if it's somehow connected with it). I need to delete those recup_dir folders, but also I need to finish recovering and get through the error. So I'm absolutely desperate. I hope that I writed it ok. Thanks in advance.

  I am using Bootable USB for installing Ubuntu with Windows 8.1. I have put pendrive and then booting my USB. When it shows me to try Ubuntu or install Ubuntu. Then I press Try ubuntu and then it says" "The system is running in low graphics mode". Then I press Ok. Then it shows 4 options. Then again I click Ok. Then it shows a black screen and nothing happens. I have tried all possible answers provided in AU. What should I do? Please help. I am using Windows 8.1 with dedicated graphic card (Video card - AMD Radeon HD 8670M). Installing 12.04 LTS with pre-installe Windows 8.1 in a Dell Laptop 3537 inspiron.

• lightdm.conf content erased, now stuck in low graphics mode

  This evening I was attempting to disable the guest account and something went awry. Currently on boot Ubuntu enters low graphics mode. No specific error report. What did I do? Before this error occurred I added a line of code in lightdm.conf to disable the guest account. I think I may have accidentally erased the contents of lightdm.conf. Not entirely sure. I troubleshooted for the past hour using various suggestions from other Questions to no avail.

• Multiboot USB (OSX only): How to customize partition name?

  Trying to deal with all the Mac OSX recovery disks I've got by moving them to bootable USB images. I've got a big USB drive with multiple partitions for each recovery disk, and it's easy to use Disk Utility to "restore" the recovery DVD to a partition. When I boot my target Mac while holding down the Alt key, I can see all my bootable images and they work great. Problem is, they've all got the same name: "Mac OS X Install DVD." I manage Macs of various vintages. If my target Mac needs 10.6.3 for example, my only option seems to be to try each one until I get past the "Mac OSX can't be installed on this computer" message. I originally named my partitions with the OSX revision number, but that name is replaced by the disk image name during Disk Utility restore. Is there any way to customize the name during or after Disk Utility restore? I tried making a new DVD image on disk first and renaming it, but when I restore it to my recovery partition it has the original name. EDIT: After booting to the wrong partition, and getting the "..can't be installed" message, I can open the Startup Disk menu and see the other partitions - and as I select each one, the info at the bottom indicates which OS revision is on that partition. So I know the info is in there! Just want it at the boot screen if possible.

• Recovering an Ubuntu installation - Ubuntu eats itself after 'sudo apt-get install -f'

  Updater (I assume) put a no entry style alert icon on the panel which informed me that certain package dependencies were not up to snuff. Upgrades were thereafter only partial. The dialogue advised that I sudo apt-get install -f. I did this hoping that app-get would fulfil dependencies and replace corrupted files and watched it systematically remove every component of linux, both the stuff I had installed and the core ubuntu packages. I could only assume at this stage that this was in preparation for a fresh install but, of course, I know better now - if you find yourself with apt-get warning you that you are about to remove several hundred packages and asking you to type an involved confirmation string seek advice before proceeding. I digress. This was a 64 bit install of 12.04. All that is left is grub pointing to a couple of windows recovery partitions on the hard drive. Thankfully the Ext4 partition is reachable from a stick boot. EDIT: I've logged onto the machine with a 64 bit stick and can see the file structure left behind by apt-get after {ahem} fixing. My first instinct was to run install from the stick but it seemed to want to do another install rather than a repair. My question then: is there a way to recover the current installation so that if I reinstall the packages I had they will pick up the original settings? I'm particularly worried about losing email from evolution - the rest I could probably lash back together. As for the use of PPA I'm not sure what you're driving at. I generally use Ubuntu Software Centre to install software, though I have used terminal scripts to add new repositories and software successfully following guidance on various websites. The most recent change I made was a downgrade of Wine in an attempt to install and run excel2007 (a necessity, I think, as I have VBA work to do). The installer had stalled and had to be killed. I wonder if that corrupted whatever database holds a model of the package installation structure. I would also be interested to know how this disaster came about. I see people in the know recommending the sudo apt-get install -f as a fairly innocuous cure in similar circumstances. Thanks for your attention, Tony Martin p.s. • Watchguard config, drop-in or mixed-routing mode?

  I have a Watchguard XTM 2 that is currently acting as a firewall and a router for my business network, I currently have the WG setup in mixed-routing mode and am happy with the current configuration. The reason I am curious about drop-in mode is because I would like to use all the interfaces on the back of the watchguard for the same subnet. My understanding is that drop-in mode will put them all on the same subnet, but it is unclear from the manual that the routing/firewall/vpn will still work as expected. This WG is right behind a DSL modem that is setup in bridge mode, so the WG is handling all PPPoE auth and routing for the network.

• Minimizing SQL transaction log file size on developer box running simple recovery model

  We have alot of SQL servers on development environment where we never take backup of the databases (TFS for code is enough). The (SharePoint) databases are all set to simple recovery model, but the log files, especially for the SharePoint configuration database is growing quite large and filling up our data drive on the SQL server. Since these log files are never used for anything, i would like advice on how to best minimize the size of these log files -or even disable them if possible. I'm not completely sure why the log files grow so large even on simple logging (checked for long running transactions (DBCC OPENTRAN) but found none). I guess the reason for the log files not being truncated is, that we dont take any backups, and hence Checkpoints arent reached. The autogrowth for log files are set to autogrow by 10% restricted to 2 gb, so i guess that is why Checkpoint (70%) arent reached here either. What would be the be best strategy to keep log files small (best case 0) without sacrificing performance (eg VLF fragmentation)?

• Install Ubuntu 12.04 in UEFI mode on a HP Pavilion dv6-6c40ca

  I have recently (as of July 2012) bought a HP Pavilion dv6-6c40ca laptop. It came pre-installed with Windows 7 on an MBR. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on it on a GPT partition in what I think is BIOS emulation mode. I made a BIOS-Grub partition so the install didn't fail. That is what it is for .. right? Now I want to upgrade to UEFI mode. How would I Install Ubuntu 12.04 in UEFI mode on a HP Pavilion dv6-6c40ca. Or is it impossible? My laptop, despite its new age may not be UEFI 2.0+ capable. If it isn't how can I install a software UEFI (i.e. a DUET such as the one by tianocore). Or is this too impossible? Set the boot flag on the 200MB partition. What should a do next to install Ubuntu 12.04?   I'm trying to shrink a Windows 7 XP Mode VHD file with VhdResizer with little success. When I select my VHD file, it says "VhdExpand only supports fixed and dynamic VHD files".   How to connect to a computer that is in Sleep mode over the internet? I am using LogMeIn to connect to another computer offsite. I just installed Windows 7 RC on that system and found that the Sleep mode actually works. Currently LogMeIn does not connect when the system is in Sleep mode or Hibernate mode (that is what their error message displays when you try). Is there a way to get LogMeIn to connect to a system in Sleep mode? Is there other software that gives simliar LogMeIn functionallity (like RDP, etc.) that could be used on Windows 7 instead. I just use LMI for connecting and nothing else (no printing or file transfers). A Non-expensive options (such as free) would be better. I have seen web sites mentioning "Wake on LAN". Does anyone have some good links on how to set this up to be accessed over the internet? This company states that we need to "Disable passive mode in your FTP client", and I confirm it doesn't work in passive mode. However, when I googled the linux command, I see that the "-p" flag is "the default now for all clients (ftp and pftp) due to security concerns using the PORT transfer mode. The flag is kept for compatibility only and has no effect anymore." How do I disable passive mode then? And, is it that bad?

• Install Windows 8 from recovery disk on VirtualBox [on hold]

  About 6 months ago, I bought a desktop HP PC with Windows 8 from Costco. I made a recovery disk (actually, took 4 DVDs) of the operating system and copied down the product key. I then did a fresh Cento6 install on the machine. I know wish to operate Windows (8 I guess, but I would rather have 7) on a VirtualBox on the Centos box. Is this possible? Any recommendations where to start? Can I do so without re-installing all the HP baggage?

• Recover from a recover partition when F11 doesn't work and windows is corrupt

  I have someones presario V3000 laptop. It has a D drive which is the recovery partition. The user brought it to me and windows would no longer even boot up. I could only reload XP and try to find a way to recover from the recovery partition. However haven't been able to. I read, hold F11 down when booting up, but that didn't do anything, and the other item I read is to create the CDs from the software installed in the OS from the factory. Well that is the OS that went corrupt and is no longer there. A new reloaded version of XP is there now. Is there still a way I can either create recover CD's/DVD's or boot from the recovery partition?

• Can't boot into Ubuntu from CD, or from Acronis True Image recovery disk

  I can boot my computer off a home-burned-from-ISO-image Windows 7 (x64 or x86) installation CD, without problems. It's a Quad 6600, 4GB RAM, 8800GT and most of the time runs Win7 with no problems. However, if I boot off a CD containing Ubuntu (10.04 or 9.something IIRC), or a recovery disk created with Acronis True Image Home 2010, it: boots starts to load the OS from the CD then hangs ... and I have to reset. I've tried all these CDs on another computer, and they boot up into Ubuntu or Acronis respectively with no problems at all. Any ideas what to look for? Sorry this is a little vague but I have no idea where to start, really ... if there's more information needed I'll edit the question. TIA!

  Hi! When i start my pc i get following message: The Logon User Interface DLL RtlGina2.dll failed to load I found solution here But i ca not log into my pc, neither in safe/normal mode. It is interesting that first time i succeed loging into safe mode, but change msconfig boot.ini to safemode with networking where i can not log in. And now every time no matter what i am choosing from F8 menu, i enter in safe mode with networking(where i get following error). So is it any way to log in back into "pure" safe mode. I am not sure that the question it`s clear enough ;-(

• Disk Management Hidden Partitions - PTEDIT32

  Apparently PTEDIT32 can edit partitions, making partitions that are hidden, visible. My purpose is to take a hidden partition on a toshiba laptop (the recovery partition) and copy it as my hard drive is beginning to fail. My problem, is that I cannot find PTEDIT32 documentation on what i want to change the partition # to. I am unable to even start on a script as I don't know where to begin. • SQL Server compatibility mode not logged

  I've been researching a problem which was diagnosed as someone changing the compatability mode for the SQL Server database from 80 to 90 on SQL Server 2005 for a database which had it's compatibility mode set to 80 due to legacy stored procedure code not having been upgraded. I found that when changing the compatibility mode this is not logged in the SQL Server logs. Has anyone seen this issue and is this a bug or is there an alternative method to track these changes?

• How is it possible that Winrar can repair any volume with one .rev file?

  I just learned about .rev files with Winrar -- that if you have a 10-part RAR volume, for example, plus one .rev (recovery) volume -- that .rev volume will be able to "fix" any -one- corrupted volume. How is it able to do this? Obviously there's something I'm not understanding, as I don't understand how one volume could have the "data" to fix any/all of the individual broken volumes. I'd guess that it's because the volumes aren't broken up like I tend to imagine -- each volume having individual files of the whole packed into them, but rather, it's viewed as one continuous "file", so to speak, of data. And that there must be some type of CRC'ish repair work -- But I just don't understand how you could have 9 working volumes, with 1 damaged, but a recovery volume that would be able to repair -any- one of those volumes. How is it able to hold "all" of the data in just one recovery file?

• Cannot do sudo: "/etc/sudoers is mode 0740, should be 0440"

  I have a problem: I don't have a root password on my mac. I just have an Admin account, which can do stuff using sudo. Now, I wanted to add my normal user to the /etc/sudoers file as well. Since it did not let me write to that file (even writing using sudo), I did this: sudo chmod u+w /etc/sudoers That worked. But since then I can't do any sudo command anymore on my system. It complains that /etc/sudoers has the wrong mode: $ sudo touch /etc/sudoers sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0740, should be 0440 Segmentation fault It sounds like a bad joke, because now I can't even change the mode back to 0440: $ sudo chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0740, should be 0440 Segmentation fault Is there any way to fix this situation? I need to get my sudo abilities back.
