• Return an opaque object to the caller without violating type-safety

  I have a method which should return a snapshot of the current state, and another method which restores that state. public class MachineModel { public Snapshot CurrentSnapshot { get; } public void RestoreSnapshot (Snapshot saved) { /* etc */ }; } The state Snapshot class should be completely opaque to the caller--no visible methods or properties--but its properties have to be visible within the MachineModel class. I could obviously do this by downcasting, i.e. have CurrentSnapshot return an object, and have RestoreSnapshot accept an object argument which it casts back to a Snapshot. But forced casting like that makes me feel dirty. What's the best alternate design that allows me to be both type-safe and opaque?

• SQL Query, return value from table with no join

  I'm hoping for an idea on the best way to approach what I'm trying to do. I have a table with a list of transactions. Each transactions has a PostDate in DateTime format. I have another table holding the fiscal period values. This table has the following columns; FiscalYear, FiscalMonth, StartDate, EndDate. I'm trying to write a query that will return all values from my transactions table, along with the FiscalYear and FiscalMonth of the PostDate. So I guess I'm just trying to return the FiscalYear and FiscalMonth values when the PostDate falls between the StartDate and EndDate. I've tried using a Subbuery, but I have little experience with them and kept returning an error message that the subquery was returning more than 1 value.   I want to loop through schemas and get a result set that looks like this: Count 5 834 345 34 984 However, I can't get it to return anything using dynamic sql...I've tried everything but 8.2 is being a real pain. • When will [MFMailComposeViewController canSendMail] return NO

  M iPhone app is using the MFMailComposeViewController class to send an in-app email with an attachment. The app will only attempt to display the mail composer dialog if the "canSendMail" method of class MFMailComposeViewController returns true (YES). Specifically, if the following method returns YES, it shows the mail composer, otherwise the user is presented with an error alert dialog stating that there are no email accounts set up on the device: - (BOOL)canDeviceSendEmail { Class mailClass = (NSClassFromString(@"MFMailComposeViewController")); return mailClass != nil && [mailClass canSendMail]; } A team of testers have reported that they get this error alert dialog, even when email accounts are set up on the device. The tester used an iPhone 3G with OS 3.1.3. Therefore the MFMailComposeViewController class must have existed, and the "canSendMail" method must have returned NO. My question is therefore: apart from the case when there are no email accounts set up on the device, in what other circumstances can the "canSendMail" method return NO? ~ Thanks

  I am trying to create a method in which I can exequte mysql UPDATE, DELETE or INSERT query. The method must work when with an INSERT I ask or do not ask the last_insert_id(). But when the query doesn't return an last_insert_id() the method malfunctions. How can I get this method to work?

• PHP: Return string between two characters

  I am wanting to use "keywords" within a large string. These keywords start and end using *my_keyword* and are user defined. How, within a large string, can I search and find what is between the two * characters and return each instance? The reason it might change it, that parts of the keywords can be user defined, such as *page_date_Y* which might show the year in which the page was created. So, again, I just need to do a search and return what is between those * characters. Is this possible, or is there a better way of doing this if I don't know the "keyword" length or what i might be?

  I'm working on an application that manipulates SQL tables in a windows form application. Up until now, I've only been using the pre-generated Fill queries, and self-made update and delete queries (which return nothing). I am interested in storing the value of a single value from a single column (an 'nchar(15)' name), and though I have easily written the SQL code to return that value to the application, I have no idea what it will be returned as. SELECT [Contact First Name] FROM ContactSkillSet WHERE [Contact ID] = @CurrentID Can the result be stored directly as a string? Do I need to cast it? Invoke a toString method?

  I've been searching google a lot for this issue and really found nothing. People just keep copying MySQL documentation on last_insert_id and nothing else. I've got an issue regarding last_insert_id, because for both situations (php & sql) it returns 0. YES: I've set a PRIMARY & UNIQUE field with AUTO_INCREMENT value YES: i've done some inserting before NO: Making double query with INSERT AND SELECT LAST... doesn't work. I've created a class Db for maintaining connection & query: class Db { public function connect() { $db = new mysqli('','','','',''); ... return $db; } public function insert() { $this->connect()->query("INSERT INTO bla bla..."); return $this->connect()->insert_id; } } And it doesn't work.

• Do I really need to return Type::size_type?

  I often have classes that are mostly just wrappers around some STL container, like this: class Foo { public: typedef std::vector<whatever> Vec; typedef Vec::size_type; const Vec& GetVec() { return vec_; } size_type size() { return vec_.size() } private: Vec vec_; }; I am not so sure about returning size_type. Often, some function will call size() and pass that value on to another function and that one will use it and maybe pass it on. Now everyone has to include that Foo header, although I'm really just passing some size value around, which should just be unsigned int anyway ...? What is the right thing to do here? Is it best practice to really use size_type everywhere?

• Do I need to store a generic rotation point/radius for rotating around a point other than the origin for object transforms?

  I'm having trouble implementing a non-origin point rotation. I have a class Transform that stores each component separately in three 3D vectors for position, scale, and rotation. This is fine for local rotations based on the center of the object. The issue is how do I determine/concatenate non-origin rotations in addition to origin rotations. Normally this would be achieved as a Transform-Rotate-Transform for the center rotation followed by a Transform-Rotate-Transform for the non-origin point. The problem is because I am storing the individual components, the final Transform matrix is not calculated until needed by using the individual components to fill an appropriate Matrix. (See GetLocalTransform()) Do I need to store an additional rotation (and radius) for world rotations as well or is there a method of implementation that works while only using the single rotation value?   I have an API in NETMF C# that I am writing that includes a function to send an HTTP request. For those who are familiar with NETMF, this is a heavily modified version of the "webClient" example, which a simple application that demonstrates how to submit an HTTP request, and recive a response. In the sample, it simply prints the response and returns void,. In my version, however, I need it to return the HTTP response. For some reason, Visual Studio reports that not all code paths return a value, even though, as far as I can tell, they do. • jQuery post with FileStreamResult as return value

  Hello, I'm quite new with jquery and asp.net mvc. My problem is that I'm calling a method in a controller that returns a FileStreamResult. This is working fine, but when I'm calling it with the jQuery post it doesn't work. I can see with vs debug tool that the progam is exectuting the method. Therefor I think it has something to do with that my jQuery call should take care of the return parameter? Somenoe? • Installing an exe with Powershell DSC Package resource gets return code 1619

  I'm trying to use Powershell DSC's Package resource to install an exe... Perforce's P4V to be specific. Here's my code: Configuration PerforceMachine { Node "SERVERNAME" { Package P4V { Ensure = "Present" Name = "Perforce Visual Components" Path = "\\nas\share\p4vinst64.exe" ProductId = '' Arguments = "/S /V/qn" # args for silent mode LogPath = "$env:ProgramData\p4v_install.log" } } } When running this, this is the error Powershell gives me: PowerShell provider MSFT_PackageResource failed to execute Set-TargetResource functionality with error message: The return code 1619 was not expected. Configuration is likely not correct + CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (:) [], CimException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : ProviderOperationExecutionFailure + PSComputerName : SERVERNAME According to documentation, return code 1619 means the MSI package couldn't be opened. However, when I manually log in to the machine and run "\\nas\share\p4vinst64.exe /S /V/qn", the install works flawlessly. Does anyone know why this is failing? Alternately, can anyone tell me how to troubleshoot this? I pasted all the error information I got from the terminal, my log file (p4v_install.log) is a 0 byte file, and there are no events in the event viewer. I don't know how to troubleshoot it any further! EDIT: I should note that I also tried using the File resource to copy the file locally, and then install it from there. Sadly, that met with the same result.

  I want to be able to create a UIButton with an oversized responsive area. I know that one way to do that is to override the hitTest method in a subclass, but how do I instantiate my custom button object in the first place? [OversizedButton buttonWithType: UIButtonTypeDetailDisclosure]; doesn't work out of the box because buttonWithType returns a UIButton, not an OversizedButton. So it seems like I need to override the buttonWithType method as well.   When i use new XStream().toXml(someObject); it returns following xml... <response> <status>SUCCESS</status> <isOwnershipVerified class="boolean">false</isOwnershipVerified> </response> and, when i use new XStream(new JsonHierarchicalStreamDriver()).toXml(someObject); it returns following json... {"response": { "status": "SUCCESS", "isOwnershipVerified": { "@class": "boolean""false"} }} Now, since i want to get rid of class attribute altogether (read it not to alias it with anything else, but to remove it) i use following code. • Render action return View(); form problem

  I'm new to MVC, so please bear with me. :-) I've got a strongly typed "Story" View. This View (story) can have Comments. I've created two Views (not partials) for my Comments controller "ListStoryComments" and "CreateStoryComment", which do what their names imply. These Views are included in the Story View using RenderAction, e.g.: <!-- List comments --> <h2>All Comments</h2> <% Html.RenderAction("ListStoryComments", "Comments", new { id = Model.Story.Id }); %> <!-- Create new comment --> <% Html.RenderAction("CreateStoryComment", "Comments", new { id = Model.Story.Id }); %> (I pass in the Story id in order to list related comments). All works as I hoped, except, when I post a new comment using the form, it returns the current (parent) View, but the Comments form field is still showing the last content I typed in and the ListStoryComments View isn’t updated to show the new story. Basically, the page is being loaded from cache, as if I had pressed the browser’s back button. If I press f5 it will try to repost the form. If I reload the page manually (reenter the URL in the browser's address bar), and then press f5, I will see my new content and the empty form field, which is my desired result. • Calling an Oracle PL/SQL procedure with Custom Object return types from 0jdbc6 JDBCthin drivers

  I'm writing some JDBC code which calls a Oracle 11g PL/SQL procdedure which has a Custom Object return type. Whenever I try an register my return types, I get either ORA-03115 or PLS-00306 as an error when the statement is executed depending on the type I set. An example is below: PLSQL Code: Procedure GetDataSummary (p_my_key IN KEYS.MY_KEY%TYPE, p_recordset OUT data_summary_tab, p_status OUT VARCHAR2); Java Code: String query = "beginmanageroleviewdata.getdatasummary(?, ?, ?); end;"); CallableStatement stmt = conn.prepareCall(query); stmt.setInt(1, 83); stmt.registerOutParameter(2, OracleTypes.CURSOR); // Causes error: PLS-00306 stmt.registerOutParameter(3, OracleTypes.VARCHAR); stmt.execute(stmt); // Error mentioned above thrown here. Can anyone provide me with an example showing how I can do this? I guess it's possible. However I can't see a rowset OracleType. CURSOR, REF, DATALINK, and more fail. • REST API error return good practices

  I'm looking for guidance on good practices when it comes to return errors from a REST API. I'm working on a new API so I can take it any direction right now. My content type is XML at the moment, but I plan to support JSON in future. I am now adding some error cases, like for instance a client attempts to add a new resource but has exceeded his storage quota. I am already handling certain error cases with HTTP status codes (401 for authentication, 403 for authorization and 404 for plain bad request URIs). I looked over the blessed HTTP error codes but none of the 400-417 range seems right to report application specific errors. So at first I was tempted to return my application error with 200 OK and a specific XML payload (ie. Pay us more and you'll get the storage you need!) but I stopped to think about it and it seems to soapy (/shrug in horror). Besides it feels like I'm splitting the error responses into distinct cases, as some are http status code driven and other are content driven. So what is the SO crowd recommendation? Good practices (please explain why!) and also, from a client pov, what kind of error handling in the REST API makes life easier for the client code?
