• Windows 2003 R2 zip program blocking EXE file

  I have a Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition SP2 32-bit machine with all latest patch (as of 1-6-2011). It's a VM. I have a zip file, including a pdf file, a txt file and a exe file. If I copy the zip file onto the machine via a shared network drive, I can unzip all the files properly without problems. If I put the zip file on my web server and then I download it from there, I can only unzip the pdf file and txt file. The exe file is silently ignored. I searched the web and found somebody reporting similar issue on XP. If I right click on the zip file downloaded from the web server, at the bottom of the general page, it has a warning message saying that "This file came from antoher computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer" I understand that I can solve the problem by simply clicking the "Unblock" button and extract the file again. The things that bothering me is that why the warning message says "might be blocked"? I tried downloading the same zip file from the same web server on to my Windows 7 box with latest patch. It also shows the same warning message. However, even with the warning message, I can extract all the files properly without clicking the "Unblock" button. Is it a bug in Windows 2003 R2 SP1? Is there any security settings controlling this? How likely will the end user seeing this problem? I want to dig into this because I am worrying people downloading my zip file from my web server might see similar problems. The first thought coming to the user's mind will be the zip file is somehow corrupted. Honestly, I didn't know this "Unblock" feature in Windows before I run into this problem. EDIT I just tried it on another Windows 2003 R2 SP1 machine. The zip program doesn't block the EXE file on that machine either. Both Windows 2003 R2 SP1 machines are joining to the same forest.

• Domino nchronos.exe multiple instances causing server to die, and Sametime problems

  I've had this problem for a few months now. I thought it started when I installed the Traveller software on the server to add ActiveSync support, but I removed that and the problem still persists. Basically new instances of "nchronos.exe" keeps spawning (and not ending), so over a period of a few days the server eventually gets drowned in nchronos.exe processes, stops responding and I need to kill Domino. My process count the last time was up at about 330, and when I killed it and restarted the Domino my process count went to 160. I'm running Domino 8.5.1 with Fix Pack 2. I don't know if it's relevant, but my Domino server was also acting as a Sametime server. At around the same time that nchronos started playing up sametime also stopped working. None of my users can connect to sametime and in the domino log it keeps telling me "stpolicy.exe" has terminated. I've googled for that and tried a few things, but nothing seems to make sametime work again. Any thoughts?? Cheers, Kevin

  Hi, I was given by my company a laptop with Windows XP Professional in Spanish. I would like to translate it to English, since I really DISLIKE to use localized versions of programs. I have read about Windows MUI packs, however you MUST have Windows XP Pro in English in order to translate it to other language, you can't translate it TO English from other language. Since reinstalling the OS using a Win XP CD in english is not an option (don't have the license nor the CD, and don't have domain privileges to rejoin my computer to the domain), I was wondering what are the essential files that contain localized strings of text. I was doing some research, and apparently explorer.exe has many of the Windows Error Messages and other strings. Will replacing my original explorer.exe with one from Windows XP in English be enough (and work) for having a "basic" english version of windows? Im mainly interested in having error messages, start menu, and the control panel in english. Also, does it HAVE to be the same version as the Service Pack im running? Besides explorer.exe are there any other essential files that i should try to get and replace? Do you see any "dangers" in replacing this files with english version ones? • Windows XP Disc: corrupt or not corrupt?

  Hi all, I just finished one of my builds and am trying to install Windows XP onto it. Here are the specs beforehand... Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4 GHz (512KB L2, 533MHz FSB) QDI Superb 4 Motherboard 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM Seagate 80GB IDE HDD Bestec 250W PSU 16MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro Samsung DVD-ROM USB 2.0 PCI Card Generic PCI Modem The issue right now is that when I'm running through the Windows Setup from my XP Pro SP3 disc, partway through the setup says that a random file on the disc is corrupt and the computer needs to be restarted. Every time I tried booting it up, a different file was noted as corrupt. However, I tested the same disc on another computer and the Windows XP disc ran to the end of the setup screen without error. I tried this on another computer and the same thing. What could possibly be happening on this one build to cause it errors during the Windows Setup? Thanks in advance.

I've read some articles which suggest the pxe server needs Uefi support to work with this model, but no documentation on the subject from serva. Is there a way to setup UEFI support on serva? The documentation tells me to use the Ipsec VPN wizard but under the wizards drop down menu there's nothing VPN related there. I have a 'base' license, is that the issue? or am I being stupid? • High I/O latency with software RAID, LUKS encrypted and LVM partitioned KVM setup

  I found out a performance problems with a Mumble server, which I described in a previous question are caused by an I/O latency problem of unknown origin. As I have no idea what is causing this and how to further debug it, I'm asking for your ideas on the topic. I'm running a Hetzner EX4S root server as KVM hypervisor. The server is running Debian Wheezy Beta 4 and KVM virtualisation is utilized through LibVirt. The server has two different 3TB hard drives as one of the hard drives was replaced after S.M.A.R.T. errors were reported. The first hard disk is a Seagate Barracuda XT ST33000651AS (512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physical sector size), the other one a Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 (AF) ST3000DM001-9YN166 (512 bytes logical and physical sector size). There are two Linux software RAID1 devices. One for the unencrypted boot partition and one as container for the encrypted rest, using both hard drives. Inside the latter RAID device lies an AES encrypted LUKS container. Inside the LUKS container there is a LVM physical volume. The hypervisor's VFS is split on three logical volumes on the described LVM physical volume: one for /, one for /home and one for swap. Here is a diagram of the block device configuration stack: sda (Physical HDD) - md0 (RAID1) - md1 (RAID1) sdb (Physical HDD) - md0 (RAID1) - md1 (RAID1) md0 (Boot RAID) - ext4 (/boot) md1 (Data RAID) - LUKS container - LVM Physical volume - LVM volume hypervisor-root - LVM volume hypervisor-home - LVM volume hypervisor-swap - … (Virtual machine volumes) The guest systems (virtual machines) are mostly running Debian Wheezy Beta 4 too. We have one additional Ubuntu Precise instance. They get their block devices from the LVM physical volume, too. The volumes are accessed through Virtio drivers in native writethrough mode. The IO scheduler (elevator) on both the hypervisor and the guest system is set to deadline instead of the default cfs as that happened to be the most performant setup according to our bonnie++ test series. The I/O latency problem is experienced not only inside the guest systems but is also affecting services running on the hypervisor system itself. The setup seems complex, but I'm sure that not the basic structure causes the latency problems, as my previous server ran four years with almost the same basic setup, without any of the performance problems. On the old setup the following things were different: Debian Lenny was the OS for both hypervisor and almost all guests Xen software virtualisation (therefore no Virtio, also) no LibVirt management Different hard drives, each 1.5TB in size (one of them was a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS, the other one I can't tell anymore) We had no IPv6 connectivity Neither in the hypervisor nor in guests we had noticable I/O latency problems According the the datasheets, the current hard drives and the one of the old machine have an average latency of 4.12ms.

With a total of 15 drives would it be better to setup all 14 as one RAID-10 block (+1 hot spare) OR split into two RAID-10 sets one for Data (8 disks) and one for logs/backups (6 disks).   One of the most popular question I get after watching my MySQL courses on Pluralsight is that beginning users are not able to find where they have installed MySQL Server. The error they receive is as follows when they type mysqld command on their default command line. ‘mysql‘ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. This error comes up if user try to execute mysqld command on default command prompt. The user should execute this command where mysql.exe file exists.  If you are using Windows Explorer you can easily search on your drive mysqld.exe and find the location of the file and execute the above command there. However, if you want to find out with command prompt the location of mysqld.exe file you can follow the direction here. Step 1: Open a command prompt Open command prompt from Start >> Run >> cmd >> enter Step 2: Change directory You need to change the default directory to root directory, hence type cd\ command on the prompt to change the default directory to c:\ . Here we are assuming that you have installed MySQL on your c: drive. If you have installed it on any other drive change the drive to that letter. Step 3: Search Drive Type the command dir mysqld.exe /s /p on the command prompt. It will search your directories and will list the directory where mysqld.exe is located. Step 4: Change Directory Now once again change your command prompt file location to the folder where your mysqld.exe is located. In my case it is located here in folder C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6\bin hence I will run following command: cd C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6\bin . Step 5: Execute mysqld.exe Now you can once again mysqld.exe on your command prompt. You can use this method to search pretty much any file with the help of command prompt.   Hi all! The context: I have a solution that contains amongh other C# projects, a VC++ project that suports compiling only as x64 or Win32 (but not Any CPU). In order for the application (which in fact is a macro for a third party application) to run, it requires Visual C++ Runtime libraries (x86) or (x64) (The macro will run on both x64 and x86 operating systems.) The problem: I want to create a Visual Studio setup project that would install the macro on both x86 and x64 operating systems, and the problem I have is to specify what Visual C++ Runtime library to use a prerequisite. If both are selected (x64 and x86) than I have a runtime error message when running the setup.exe, as on x86 operating systems you cannot run x64 executables like the Visual C++ Runtime libraries (x64) kit is...(which the setup calls in the back). So I would need a bitness condition, or something like that to tell the setup what bitness version of the Visual C++ Runtime library to try to install...I'm not sure if this is possible, or even where such a code should be placed in the setup.   I'm trying to deploy a Web Part Feature as part of solution. Solution being add to the store and feature being added successfully. Full trust enabled in Web.Config for bin deployment of the .DLL but Web Part not working when page viewed by a non-admin user... So, decided to deploy to GAC but discovered that gacutil.exe is not included with the OS? The only place I can find it is in the Windows SDK with a download size of over 22GB! I know I can choose to download only certain components, but which ones should I select and are there any dependencies? Better yet, is there an easier way to get a copy of the gacutil.exe tool?

• Visual Studio build fails: unable to copy exe-file from obj\debug to bin\debug

  This is a question asked before, both here on Stack Overflow and other places, but none of the suggestions I've found this far has helped me, so I just have to try asking a new question. Scenario: I have a simple Windows Forms application (C#, .NET 4.0, Visual Studio 2010). It has a couple of base forms that most other forms inherit from, it uses Entity Framework (and POCO classes) for database access. Nothing fancy, no multi-threading or anything. Problem: All was fine for a while. Then, all out of the blue, Visual Studio failed to build when I was about to launch the application. I got the warning "Unable to delete file '...bin\Debug\[ProjectName].exe'. Access to the path '...bin\Debug\[ProjectName].exe' is denied." and the error "Unable to copy file 'obj\x86\Debug\[ProjectName].exe' to 'bin\Debug\[ProjectName].exe'. The process cannot access the file 'bin\Debug\[ProjectName].exe' because it is being used by another process." (I get both the warning and the error when running Rebuild, but only the error when running Build - don't think that is relevant?) I understand perfectly fine what the warning and error message says: Visual Studio is obviously trying to overwrite the exe-file while it the same time has a lock on it for some reason. However, this doesn't help me find a solution to the problem... The only thing I've found working is to shut down Visual Studio and start it again. Building and launching then works, untill I make a change in some of the forms, then I have the same problem again and have to restart... Quite frustrating! As I mentioned above, this seems to be a known problem, so there are lots of suggested solutions. I'll just list what I've already tried here, so people know what to skip: Creating a new clean solution and just copy the files from the old solution. Adding the following to the following to the project's pre-build event: if exist "$(TargetPath).locked" del "$(TargetPath).locked"   if not exist "$(TargetPath).locked" if exist "$(TargetPath)" move "$(TargetPath)" "$(TargetPath).locked" Adding the following to the project properties (.csproj file): <GenerateResourceNeverLockTypeAssembliestrue</GenerateResourceNeverLockTypeAssemblies However, none of them worked for me, so you can probably see why I'm starting to get a bit frustrated. I don't know where else to look, so I hope somebody has something to give me! Is this a bug in VS, and if so is there a patch? Or has I done something wrong, do I have a circular reference or similar, and if so how could I find out? Any suggestions are highly appreciated :)
