• AWS: Multi-region setup using single RDS instance

  I'm trying to scale our web application (PHP, MySQL, memcache) in a multi-region scheme. Currently we are using a setup with two EC2 instances behind an ELB and an RDS instance, all of them in US-EAST (Virginia) region. We would like to have a presence in the EU (Ireland) region as well. This means at least a new EC2 instance there (identical to the others, serving the same application). I have copied the desired AMI, setup the new instance, setup a same ELB configuration (required for SSL termination) and configured latency-based routing in Route53. And it works as suggested. But, clients from EU have speed problems. This is due to the fact that the EU EC2 instances connect to the US-based RDS instance. As far as I know Amazon has not yet enabled RDS multi-region replication. Do you have any suggestions on how to properly speed up the whole setup while using the single RDS instance? Also, any ideas in general on how to scale things up? Ideally we would like to continue using the RDS technology for various reasons. Nevertheless, I am open to suggestions (I guess the next idea would be to host our own MySQL servers).

  First off let me say that I'm not a network admin or server guy, I know very little about that stuff. What I'm trying to do is setup a virtualized domain using hyper-V. Here is the configuration: Physical Server: 4Mb RAM Windows Server 2008 R2 running Hyper-V Virtual Environment: One Domain Controller running Windows Server 2008 R2 One Client running Windows Server 2008 R2 I have been successful in setting up a virtual domain controller and adding a virtual client to that domain controller but I'm stuck at trying to give the virtual Environment Internet access. I can give the client VM Internet access if I remove them from the virtual domain but once I add them back to the virtual domain, Internet access is gone. I've read articles describing many different ways this can be done (using RRAS with NAT, using a wireless connection, etc...) but all of those articles only cover a small piece of the setup and also seem to be geared towards people who know there way around networking and servers which I don't. I'd like to know more but my thing is software development and I have my hands full trying to keep up with everything in that realm. I simply want to setup a virtual domain with Internet access for testing. Can anyone point me to any "for Dummy's" type information on how to setup this type of environment or can anyone provide this kind of step-by-step help. Any help would be very much appreciated.

  I have a script that acts as a wrapper for some unit tests written using the Python unittest module. In addition to cleaning up some files, creating an output stream and generating some code, it loads test cases into a suite using unittest.TestLoader().loadTestsFromTestCase() I am already using optparse to pull out several command-line arguments used for determining the output location, whether to regenerate code and whether to do some clean up. I also want to pass a configuration variable, namely an endpoint URI, for use within the test cases. I realize I can add an OptionParser to the setUp method of the TestCase, but I want to instead pass the option to setUp. Is this possible using loadTestsFromTestCase()? I can iterate over the returned TestSuite's TestCases, but can I manually call setUp on the TestCases? ** EDIT ** I wanted to point out that I am able to pass the arguments to setUp if I iterate over the tests and call setUp manually like: (options, args) = op.parse_args() suite = unittest.TestLoader().loadTestsFromTestCase(MyTests.TestSOAPFunctions) for test in suite: test.setUp(options.soap_uri) However, I am using xmlrunner for this and its run method takes a TestSuite as an argument. I assume it will run the setUp method itself, so I would need the parameters available within the XMLTestRunner. I hope this makes sense.

• Missing Setup->VLAN on DD-WRT Web GUI?

  Please note that I've already posted this question on the dd-wrt forums. I am using "DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/07/10) std" on a WZR-HP-G300NH model Buffalo router. I've found a number of tutorials online that talk about using Setup-VLAN on the menu system of the GUI interface to configure VLANs, but on my own router, it appears that VLAN configuration is located elsewhere; mainly in the Setup-Networking-VLAN Tagging section of the GUI. I would gladly just use the bash shell to configure the vlans on the router, but every tutorial I read refers to "changing the gui to reflect the changes made in the bash prompt". Are there any tutorials or documentation that you are aware of that that refer to the Setup-Networking-VLAN Tagging GUI portion of my router?

• Airport Extreme roaming setup

  We've got three Apple AirPort extremes and want to setup them as a roaming wlan network on my company. My question is what's the correct setup for this? All three AP:s is supposed to create the same wireless network "MyWlan" and we want roaming supoprt between them so that client can move from floor to floor without having to switch wlan or reconnect. We don't want to use any kind of DHCP or NAT on the AirPorts, only bridge mode. Do we connect the AirPorts to the lan/ethernet using the WAN port or one of the LAN ports? What's the correct settings in the config utility? Have one of the AirPorts create a network and setup the other two to extend the created network from AirPort 1 or have them all create the same network and set the same wlan password?

  Am thinking seriously of renting a dedicated server. Now I know how to setup apache and the underlying scripting engines and databases but I'm a bit clueless with how the emails would work. Currently, I'm on a shared hosting account and I get a fancy gui which allows me to nicely add a domain, setup nameservers and then the emails for all domain names with either simple forwarding or the full account which also has a webmail app behind it. What options do I have? Are there non complicated ways to have the same email setup experience? Or are there reliable external providers I could use? My past experiences with sendmail/postfix have always been fuzzy - not exactly knowing whats happening behind the scenes.

  I want a secure mail solution, as I am looking to move away from Google and other parties looking into my private data. How much of a PITA is it to setup my own mailserver? Should I go for an external provider with a good privacy policy and encrypted data instead? I have a VPS running Debian (with a dedicated IP + reverse DNS), and I'm a fairly capable Linux administrator, having setup a couple of webservers, home networks, and looking over the shoulder of sysadmins at work. The security I currently have on the VPS is limited to iptables and installing/running the bare minimum of what I need (currently basically irssi and lighttpd). When setting up a mail server, is there a lot of stuff to take into consideration? Will my outgoing mail be marked as spam on other servers if I don't implement a number of solutions? Will reliable spam filtering be difficult to setup? Can I easily encrypt the stored mail?

  Hello, I have an win 2008 R2 machine (a home machine of mine) that I am messing around with and learning the server technologies. I also wanted to try out oracle, and was wondering if its possible to setup a LINUX machine with Oracle, and have the two interoperate. What I mean by that is if I setup the server and my laptop on a domain, would it be possible to communicate to that LINUX machine and thus the Oracle database, and if so, are there any good resources on the setup? • Windows 7 setup can not find hard disk

  Previously I had an old Seagate barracuda 160GB HDD which got crashed some days before. Yesterday I bought new Hard Disk Seagate Barracuda 500GB (ST500DM002). I just replaced the 500GB hard disk with 160GB one leaving data and power cable intact and untouched. And ideally this new hard disk should start functioning. I tried to install Windows 7 with DVD the setup says you don't have any hard disks installed on your machine. I rechecked connection tried with Win XP setup but continued receiving same error. Do I need to do some initialization stuff with hard disk before installing setup? If so how to do it. If not then is there any problem with my newly bought hard disk? Thanks In Advance.

• BIG IP - HTTPS Health Monitor setup

  I have a Web site that we have setup a health monitoring pages so we can take our servers in and out of the Big-IP as we see fit. Now we have just moved onto Big-IP and the issue I have hit is that you setup Health Monitors for port 80 and 443, now the 80 check works fine but when I to get the 443 check to look at our file it fails. Now I am aware as I am hitting the this page on the IP address over HTTPS is going to cause a cert error but I would have guessed that BIG-Ip would have been setup just to accept the cert and carry on with the check. Is what I am wanting to do possible? Also is there a way of just using a HTTP monitor for HTTPS? Because if port 80 has stopped sending traffic then if i use the same monitor for 443 it will stop traffic to that. Any help would be great! Thanks

For various reasons, we want to run this on-site in our office rather than hosting it externally. It's been a while since I last had to set up my own servers so I thought I would tap into the collective wisdom of serverfault! My broad requirements are: Budget $30-50k, with an aim to get as much compute capacity as possible for that budget 64-bit servers suitable to run Ubuntu Linux + Java Some relatively standalone rack that can be installed in secure office space Fast/low latency network connections between the servers, but don't really care about connectivity to the outside world Storage capacity shared between the servers - they don't necessarily need their own storage providing they can be booted from a common image Downtime can be tolerated (since the calculations are run in batch mode) The software itself is fault-tolerant, so there is no need for extra resiliency in the server setup (cheap replaceable commodity parts will be fine in general) Given these requirements what kind of setup would you recommend and why?

  I am trying to setup squid to tunnel via openvpn so that I can just enter an Ip and port in my browser settings and use it as a US proxy. My server is a OpenVZ VM. Running into some issues: I setup openvpn using : http://safesrv.net/install-openvpn-on-centos/ as part of that guide I also ran: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o venet0 -j SNAT --to-source iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.8.0.0/24 -j SNAT --to-source Installed squid using this guide: http://www.server-world.info/en/note?os=CentOS_6&p=squid from that guide changed acl lan src 10.0.0.0/24 to acl lan src 10.8.0.0/24 Next, I went to my browser proxy settings and put - 10.8.0.1 in the HTTP field. Put the port I had setup in the squid config file and tried to load a page. Nothing connecting. Any help? What am I doing wrong?

This is a big problem because it uses huge amounts of memory and CPU for minutes at a time. I want to know how to stop DW20.exe from running. Please note, I have already tried these often mentioned solutions: Disabling error reporting in Control Panel System Advanced Error Reporting Disabling the Error Reporting Service Modifying the registry as in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841477 (however I might have done this wrong - this doc says "add a DWReportee value of 1" - what I did was add a DWORD entry with hexadecimal value of 1 - is this right? Also only 2 of the 4 keys were present, so I only modified these, e.g. there was no HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\PCHealth key at all) So, zero points for suggesting any of the above (unless you can see I have modified the registry incorrectly) ! Also zero points for suggesting I resolve whatever is causing the application crashes :) - I am figuring this out, I just want something in the mean time to stop DW20.exe eating up all the server resources. By the way, this is a Windows 2003 SP1 server, with IIS 6 and SQL 2005 installed. There is no MS Office. Thx

• New user profile creation error - Windows cannot open *.exe

  I have a windows 7 laptop with the user "mydomain\boy" that cannot log in to the laptop. the error message is something like "User profile service cannot log in the user boy". I then logged in with the domain admin account "mydomain\admin" and then went to delete the "mydomain\boy" from my computer system properties advance system settings user profiles settings. I also ensure that the user is deleted from control panel user accounts. I then also deleted the user folder c:\users\boy I also checked that the registry at this location HKLM\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\profilelist\ and ensure that there is no entry for boy. I followed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215 using the method 3 "fix it for me" but does not seem to do anything. (or i don't know how to use it). AFTER EVERYTHING DONE ABOVE... Everytime i log in with a new user, be it boy, girl or anything other domain account (other than the admin account already created when I first logged in to begin the fix/break), it takes a long time, and when the "preparing desktop" goes away, it starts to exe cannot open error e.g. regsvr.exe etc.. file association problem with exe QUESTION (phew finally..): Please tell me how to fix it?   Hi all, I just booted up my Samsung N120 netbook (with Windows XP Home SP3) and a dialog box came up with a command prompt window behind it. The dialog box is titled 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem and the message is as follows: C:\DOCUME~1\SAMSUNG\csrss.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0544 IP:0117 OP:63 00 64 00 34 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. This only started on my most recent boot-up. One thing to note is that when I downloaded the Dropbox installer and opened it up, Panda Cloud Antivirus detected a suspicious file, which was csrss.exe and "neutralized it." However, an actual virus or trojan was not detected immediately before the file was detected and neutralized. Just under two weeks ago, a trojan and two viruses were detected for some odd reason. (I only went to website I knew and I do not torrent or browse adult sites.) Anyhow, the two viruses came up in temporary files and the trojan was "neutralized." Anyways, the main question is: How can I repair the csrss.exe file such that Windows XP starts up properly? A screenshot could be posted upon request. Thanks in advance!

• Domino nchronos.exe multiple instances causing server to die, and Sametime problems

  I've had this problem for a few months now. I thought it started when I installed the Traveller software on the server to add ActiveSync support, but I removed that and the problem still persists. Basically new instances of "nchronos.exe" keeps spawning (and not ending), so over a period of a few days the server eventually gets drowned in nchronos.exe processes, stops responding and I need to kill Domino. My process count the last time was up at about 330, and when I killed it and restarted the Domino my process count went to 160. I'm running Domino 8.5.1 with Fix Pack 2. I don't know if it's relevant, but my Domino server was also acting as a Sametime server. At around the same time that nchronos started playing up sametime also stopped working. None of my users can connect to sametime and in the domino log it keeps telling me "stpolicy.exe" has terminated. I've googled for that and tried a few things, but nothing seems to make sametime work again. Any thoughts?? Cheers, Kevin

• Windows XP Language, explorer.exe

  Hi, I was given by my company a laptop with Windows XP Professional in Spanish. I would like to translate it to English, since I really DISLIKE to use localized versions of programs. I have read about Windows MUI packs, however you MUST have Windows XP Pro in English in order to translate it to other language, you can't translate it TO English from other language. Since reinstalling the OS using a Win XP CD in english is not an option (don't have the license nor the CD, and don't have domain privileges to rejoin my computer to the domain), I was wondering what are the essential files that contain localized strings of text. I was doing some research, and apparently explorer.exe has many of the Windows Error Messages and other strings. Will replacing my original explorer.exe with one from Windows XP in English be enough (and work) for having a "basic" english version of windows? Im mainly interested in having error messages, start menu, and the control panel in english. Also, does it HAVE to be the same version as the Service Pack im running? Besides explorer.exe are there any other essential files that i should try to get and replace? Do you see any "dangers" in replacing this files with english version ones?
