  • Suggestions for someone wanting to become a Laptop Reseller

    First of all, to give you a little background... I have had my Microsoft A+ for several years now. I used to run a small business repairing Xbox 360 consoles and I am currently a Network Engineer for a company in Ohio. I definitely know my way around a computer. I miss running a small business on the side and I'd like to get something going again. There is a really high demand in my area for Laptops and I was thinking about starting a small Laptop store out of my house. What is the best way to do this? I was assuming that the best way would be to buy barebones systems and build them yourself. If this is the best method, I would be very interested in any resources to get parts and such. Apparently Laptop parts aren't the easiest thing to come by (especially at a good price). Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get something like this going?

  • Should one reject over-scoped projects?

    I spoke to my first potential client today and he told me about the requirements of his project - an Android app. He is a well-known designer / photographer in my country and now wants me to "convert the website into an app, custom-tailored". So the requirements, details stripped out, are as follows: eCommerce Aggregating all his content like videos, blogs, tweets, etc. into the app Live streaming any of his studio demos Augmented reality. So that people can see what his painting will look like on their wall before they buy it Taxi Sharing Now, for a freelance project, it seems too over-scoped. I am not saying that I cannot do it. I can. But let me be realistic: There is a steep learning curve when it comes to VR. I am not a tester. I have never white-box tested my own apps. I always black-box test. Since he is a renowned artist, something short of perfect might harm his public image So, I asked him for 2 weeks' worth of time before I give him the final answer. Now knowing whom to consult for advise, I am posting the question here. Although interesting and personally challenging, I am split-minded about accepting a project like this. I will be the only developer for this. Should one reject a project that seems to be over-scoped for one's own abilities?

  • Working with Active Directory and Windows Small Business Server 2008

    I have to say that in most of my time as a network engineer I have had the opportunity to play with servers, but mostly it's been to put our management software on, and that was about it. I have been a Systems Network Engineer for about three months now, and as such I have been respnosible for the configuration of our test devices... this being said, I have had to start working through how to configure and apply such things as GPO through a new forest, domain and OU. This being said I have configured about three different GPO's and applied them to different locations. The first laptop that I brought into the domain took the default Domain group Policy... this was cool, I got excited... then When I tried to bring in the second Laptop, it didn't take the policy. I looked at the configuration, and the default domain policy was applied to domain computers, however since the laptop resides in the SBS Computers of the OU that was created, SBS created individual policies for XP and Vista for that OU, which I was unaware of. So the default policy for that ou overrode the domain policy and none of the options that were defined in the Domain policy were applied... this being said, I am now working on putting the default Domain as an applicable policy in the OU, thus I won't have to reconfigure another policy to mirror the Domain Policy... here goes nothing!!!....     the aim is for the player object to slow down and stop instead of just stopping dead. The following codes works ok when the player is not jumping, but gets stuck in an object if the player is in the air when they do it. Left Key released event: if hsp = 0 exit; hspeed = -3; friction = 0.20; if obj_Player.hspeed = 0 { hspeed = 0; } Right key released event: if hsp = 0 exit; hspeed = +3; friction = 0.20; if obj_Player.hspeed = 0 { hspeed = 0; } and here's the horizontal collision code for interest: if (place_meeting(x+hsp,y,obj_bound)) { while(!place_meeting(x+sign(hsp),y,obj_bound)) { x += sign(hsp); } hsp = 0; } x += hsp; Any help would be much appreciated.   • Centrally managing 100+ websites without bankrupting a small company

    I'm mainly interested in opinions on the trade-offs between having a single central server all the websites connect to as opposed to each website mirroring a subset of the master database with all the products in it. For example, will I run into severe performance issues (or even security issues, or restrictions) making queries to an offsite database? Will we hit scalability issues we can't handle early on from the sheer bandwidth required to maintain this? If we do go with something like a script that keeps smaller databases (each containing a subset of the central master data) in sync, what sorts of issues will we likely encounter there? I would really like the opinions of people far more knowledgeable than I am regarding the pros and cons of both setups and what headaches we are likely to encounter. CLARIFICATION: This should not be viewed as a question about whether we should implement one database vs multiple databases. This question has been answered numerous times. The question is regarding the pros and cons for a deployment like this having the ability to manage all the websites centrally (one server) vs trying to keep them all in sync if they each have their own db (multiple servers). REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE: We are a t-shirt company, and we have individual websites for our different kinds of t-shirts, but we're looking at a central order management integrated with our single shopping cart (which is ColdFusion + MySQL). Now, let's say we have a t-shirt that's on 10 of our websites and we change an image for it. Ideally we would change that in one place and the change would propagate, but how would we set this up?

  • Toolset agnostic build server and Silverlight projects

    Problem Normally I try to have my continuous integration as most a possible toolset free to ensure that no local stuff could have an impact to my build. My Silverlight app references a special compile target in a folder outside my developer tree: <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath32)\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" /> So I copied the stuff from this folder to a local one and changed the call to this target in my csproj: <Import Project="..\..\..\tools\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" /> And now Visual Studio Conversion Wizard welcomes my with this: Solution Regardless of which line I write – this conversion comes back again and again, if the line has another form than <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath32)\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" /> So it seems that there is no simple way to change this behaviour. Workaraound I must accept, that this line must be in the csproj and to run the build the toolset must be copied to the build server at the correct location. So go to your development machine where Visual Studio is installed and copy the folder “C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications” to your build server at the equivalent location.   Xmas wishes to Microsoft: Please provide technologies to let us developers bundle all needed stuff for a project in one developer tree. It should be possible that one checkout starts us up! No additional installations regardless whether it is a developing machine or dedicated build or continuous integration server.   • Take Camera Phone Macro Photos with a Cheap Laser Pointer Lens

    Inside those cheap laser pointers you see in the grocery store checkout line there’s a handy little plastic lens that, when slapped on your phone’s camera, makes it easy to take macro photographs. In this tutorial, they take the lens from a laser point and secure it using tape and a bobby pin. An alternative method to achieve the same end (and with a higher quality lens) is to dismantle a CD/DVD drive to source the lens and use painter’s tape to hold the lens in place–this is the technique I used several years ago, check out the tutorial video here.   • Complex shading using one single (small) texture

    Recently I stumbled upon a demo reel in UDK about how one can attain beautiful results using just one (rather tiny) texture that's being sent to the shader pipeline. The famous link is this one. Basically, the author states that they've used just one texture and give a snapshot of the technique here. I see that every RGBA channel contains different grayscale information.. and that info could be used to inside a shader to obtain a colour blended output. The problem is that the reel displays a fairly complex scene. To top that, the author even makes use of a normal map. How did they manage to fit a normal map in an already cluttered texture? It makes sense to have a half-space normal map by using only RG from an RGB texture, but what about the rest of the information? Since it was proven to be possible, could someone please explain how it was done (the big picture, not the dirty details!)!? Here's the texture being used. Click to see in full size.

    I have changed the scale to my own and now I cant create any object, including circle, if it is of the size which is normal for my scale. I am to create big object first and then modify it to smaller size. Looks like minimal size protection is set somewhere. Where? UPDATE While creating a circle, if I drag for 0.04m circle disappears after drag end. If I drag for 0.08m circle also disappears. If I drag for more than 0.1m, circle persists after drag end. How to set so that it persist after 0.01m too?

    Directly post graduation from University, I decided to build my own web app (Ease My Day) while waiting to get a job as a software Engineer. The reasons to build this app: Gain solid hands on software experience before hitting the job scene Providing a solution to a common problem Not sitting doing nothing while searching for jobs The app is Not an entrepreneurial tryout nor a business to be sold. Still throughout interviews I noticed that at the rate of 4 of each 5 interviews I pass through the app is being confused with a business and I am asked the same questions: Why did you build the business? Why do you want to stop the app? Do you want to sell the app? Knowing that I didn't build a business nor make any income from this application. Do candidates who take initiatives and like to craft their own apps on the side cause a red flag on the hiring manager's radar?
