• How can we plan projects realistically while accounting for support issues?

  We're having a problem at work: we're trying to schedule work so that we can assess time scales and get deadline dates. The problem is that it's difficult to plan for a project without knowing everything that's going to happen. For instance, right now we've planned all our projects through the start of December, however in that time we will have various in house and external meetings, teleconferences and extra work. It's all well and good to say that a project will take three weeks, but if there is a week's worth of interruption in that time then the date of completion will be pushed back a week. The problem is 3 fold: When we schedule projects the time scales are taken literally. If we estimate three weeks, the deadline is set for three week's time, the client is told, and there is no room for extension. Interim work and such means that we lose productive time working on the project. Sometimes clients don't have the time that we need to take to do the work, so they'll sometimes come to us and say they need a project done by the end of the month even when we think that the work will take two months - not to mention we already have work to be doing. We have a Gantt chart which we are trying to fill in with all the projects we have and we fill in timesheets, but they're not compared to the Gantt chart at all. This makes it difficult to say "Well, we scheduled 3 weeks for this project, but we've lost a week here so the deadline has to move back a week." It's also not professional to keep missing deadlines we've communicated to the client. How do other people deal with this type of situation? How do you manage the planning of projects? How much "extra" time do you schedule into a project to account for non-project work that occurs during a project? How do you deal with support issues and bugs and stuff? • Terminology: .NET C++ vs. traditional C++

  Hello. I've recently been working with a team that's using both .NET C++ and pre-.NET C++. I fully understand the technical differences between the two technologies. However, I sometimes feel like I'm floundering when it comes to the terminology used to differentiate the two. Example: Say we have two projects: ProjectA contains "C++" code that builds a .NET assembly DLL. ProjectB contains Visual C++ code that builds a traditional native Windows DLL. What is the best way to succinctly and terminologically draw a distinction between the two projects? Again, I'm not asking for an in-depth technical description of the differences between the two technologies. I'm just looking for names and labels. This is how I might try to make the distinction when talking to someone about Project A and Project B: "ProjectA is a managed .NET C++ project" and ProjectB is an unmanaged Visual C++ DLL project." However I am not at all certain that this terminology is ideal, or even correct. Please describe what you feel the ideal language to use in this situation (or similar situations) might be. Feel free to motivate your answer.

• minecraft wont take keyboard input

  After upgrading to 13.10 FTB(minecraft) wont take keyboard input after login in. I can click the buttons but it will not let me type in a address on multiplayer, or copy/paste with mouse. Since upgrading I cannot run the other mod packs either, only the one I had installed from 13.04. • Laptop drains of quickly with battery

  I am a user since years in ubuntu and I have not come across this problem with ubuntu till date. My battery drains off immediately after I unplug my AC power. The options I tried: 1) checked the battery state with : cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state present: yes capacity state: ok charging state: charged present rate: 0 mA remaining capacity: 392 mAh present voltage: 12476 mV Initially it was showing charging state: charging after 5mins it started displaying as charged. ! Based on that if I remove my AC Power it shows low battery notification. 2) When I run acpi : acpi -b Battery 0: Unknown, 9% The battery state shows as unknown. But initially when we plug-in to AC adapter acpi -b Battery 0: Charging, 9%, 13:04:00 until charged 3) When the check the same with : upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0 native-path: /sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/PNP0A08:00/device:02/PNP0C09:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 vendor: HP power supply: yes updated: Thu Nov 1 16:06:40 2012 (20 seconds ago) has history: yes has statistics: yes battery present: yes rechargeable: yes state: charging energy: 4.2336 Wh energy-empty: 0 Wh energy-full: 33.1128 Wh energy-full-design: 33.1128 Wh energy-rate: 5.6052 W voltage: 12.474 V time to full: 5.2 hours percentage: 12.7854% capacity: 100% technology: lithium-ion Is the power stats output, It says 5hrs to charge completely, If I charge it even more than 5hrs and unplug the AC power, It again cribs stating LOW BATTERY !! • CLR 4.0: Corrupted State Exceptions

  Corrupted state exceptions are designed to help you have fewer bugs in your code by making it harder to make common mistakes around exception handling. A very common pattern is code like this: public void FileSave(String name) { try { FileStream fs = new FileStream(name, FileMode.Create); } catch (Exception e) { MessageBox.Show("File Open Error"); throw new Exception(IOException); } The standard recommendation is not to catch System.Exception but rather catch the more specific exceptions (in this case, IOException). While this is a somewhat contrived example, what would happen if Exception were really an AccessViolationException or some other exception indicating that the process state has been corrupted? What you really want to do is get out fast before persistent data is corrupted or more work is lost. To help solve this problem and minimize the chance that you will catch exceptions like this, CLR 4.0 introduces Corrupted State Exceptions, which cannot be caught by normal catch statements. There are still places where you do want to catch these types of exceptions, particularly in your application’s “main” function or when you are loading add-ins.  There are also rare circumstances when you know code that throws an exception isn’t dangerous, such as when calling native code. In order to support these scenarios, a new HandleProcessCorruptedStateExceptions attribute has been added. This attribute is added to the function that catches these exceptions. There is also a process wide compatibility switch named legacyCorruptedStateExceptionsPolicy which when set to true will cause the code to operate under the older exception handling behavior. • A story from SQLvdb and Idera

  A year or so back, I struggled with some consistency problems so I figured out I needed a way to "mount" backup files as a virtual database. At the time (SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008) my choice fell on Idera's SQLvdb because it felt easy enough to use. I used it a few times and it worked great. Some time later we upgraded to SQL Server 2008R2 and I didn't use SQLvbd for a long time. Until yesterday... I was upset that suddenly SQLvbd took more than 2 hours to mount the backup file (if it succeeded at all). I uninstalled the application and went for lunch. After lunch, I decided to give SQLvbd another chance so I emailed their tech support and got a response within 30 minutes or so. Now, since I am a SQL Server MVP, they gave me another serial number than my first and I downloaded and installed a newer version. But also this version was really slow. I emailed back to them with the additional information they requested and to my surprise I had got an email this morning when I came back to work, where Idera explained some of the issues (bugs) and asked my to test a newer version. I did, and now a fresh mount of a 100GB database (compressed to 20GB with native compression) located on our SAN takes less than 6 minutes! Thank you. //Peter

• Meaningful concise method naming guidelines

  Recently I started releasing an open source project, while I was the only user of the library I did not care about the names, but know I want to assign clever names to each methods to make it easier to learn, but I also need to use concise names so they are easy to write as well. I was thinking about some guidelines about the naming, I am aware of lots of guidelines that only care about letters casing or some simple notes. Here, I am looking after guidelines for meaningful concise naming. For example, this could be part of the guidelines I am looking after: Use Add when an existing item is going to be added to a target, Use Create when a new item is being created and added to a target. Use Remove when an existing item is going to be removed from a target, Use delete when an item is going to be removed permanently. Pair AddXXX methods with RemoveXXX and Pair CreateXXX methods with DeleteXXX methods, but do not mix them. The above guidance may be intuitive for native English speakers, but for me that English is my second language I need to be told about things like this.

• Flash player stops working in Firefox

  First of all please be merciful as I am a 2 days ubuntu user. I've only used Windows OSs before. Hardware configuration -Quad Core Q6600 CPU -4 GB RAM -Geforce 8800GT 512 MB RAM -Seagate 320GB Harddisk I installed ubuntu x64 and everything went smooth. I had Adoble flash player installed from Ubuntu Software Center. The problem is that the flash videos on youtube (basically on all pages) looked pixelate. I use Firefox 3.6 that came with ubuntu by default. After reading around here I saw something about overriding hardware acceleration but that didn't work either. Or maybe I just didn't do it correctly. The problem was that if I opened 2-3 youtube tabs, when closing one of them, in 95% of the cases, the flash plugin would crash in remaining tabs and a black screen was instead of the video. After doing some more search I discovered the FlashAid extension for Firefox. I installed it and it made an update of flash plugin. Now the videos look good but now each time I watch a video, when switching to another one the flash plugin crashes and I can see insead of the vide the firefox message with Plugin has crasshed, refresh the page. Basically this is what I miss to have a complete pleasant ubuntu experience. Any ideas how to fix this? Thank you

• New database profiling support in ANTS Performance Profiler

  In May last year, the ANTS Performance Profiler team added the ability to profile database requests your application makes to SQL Server or Oracle. The really cool thing is that you’re shown those requests in the application’s call tree, so you can see what .NET code caused those queries to run. It’s particularly helpful if you’re using an ORM which automagically generates and runs queries for you, but which doesn’t necessarily do it in the most efficient way possible. Now by popular demand, we’ve added support for profiling MySQL (or MariaDB) and PostgreSQL, so you can see queries run against those databases too.   PLINQ is awesome for getting a lot of work done fast, but one thing I haven't figured out yet is how to start work with PLINQ but only let it execute for a maximum amount of time and react if it is taking too long. So, as I must admit I am still learning PLINQ, I created this extension in that ignorance. It behaves similar to ForAll<> but takes a timeout and returns false if the threads don't complete in the specified amount of time. • Java IDE written in pure Java?

  Is there a Java IDE written in Java? I just got my year 9 DET laptop today at school, and there are all sorts of restrictions set in place. Somewhat annoyingly, you cannot run any executable other than the ones already installed on the system (for some reason they haven't disabled the use of Command Prompt, PowerShell, or strangely enough, regedit). They allow you to run Java executables, so I thought that would be the only way to be able to program on my crappy laptop at school (when I have finished all my work, naturally) :D Edit: By written in Java, I also mean that the executable, that is used to run the program, has the file extension ".jar", thus running on the JVM. Edit 2: I tried the DrJava IDE, and it worked great, thanks (I can compile and execute programs)! Regarding running Eclipse as through the command line using the command "java -jar "C:/Users.../org.eclipse..."". This results in an error producing a log saying file, the main error is: MESSAGE An error occurred while automatically activating bundle org.eclipse.ui.workbench (182). How do I fix this error (I much perfer working with Eclipse than any other IDE)? Edit 3: Regarding my last edit, just disregard it :D. I fixed the problem by downloading the latest version of Eclipse.

• Netbook performs hard shutdown without warning on low battery power

  My Asus EEE netbook performs a hard shutdown when it reaches low battery power, without giving any warning - i.e. the power just goes off, without any shutdown process. I can't find anything in the syslog, and no error messages are printed before it happens. I've had this problem on previous (K)Ubuntu versions, and hoped updating to Ubuntu Precise would help resolve the issue, but it hasn't. The option in the Power application for "when power is critically low" is currently blank - the only options are a (grayed-out) hibernate and "Power off". I have re-installed indicator-power to no effect. The time remaining reported by acpi is unstable, as is the time remaining reported by gnome-power-statistics. (For example, running acpi twice in succession, I got 2h16min, and then 3h21min remaining. These sorts of jumps in the remaining time are also in the gnome-power-statistics graphs.) It might be possible to write a script to give me advance warning (as per @RanRag's comment below), but I would prefer to isolate why I don't get a critical battery notification from the system before this happens, so that I can take action as appropriate (suspend/shutdown/plug in power) when I get a notification. • How to better integrate a unix development environment into Windows

  I'm mostly a Windows user but I do most of my development (essentially web development) using unix tools and software. I've been going back and forth between using a dedicated lubuntu virtual machine on Virtualbox and using some tools directly in windows (msgit, python, django), but none of these approaches is entirely satisfactory. I'd like to hear of ways other devs use to better integrate a unix workflow into windows. For instance tighter integration between a linux and vm and windows. The vagrant demo showed how a VM could work off of a windows project folder and I found that nice. I'd like to hear of other tools and tips that would help mimic the workflow one can find on OS X (of course I understand that it cannot be as tightly integrated on Windows as it doesn't have the same unix underpinnings). PS: I have tried cygwin as well EDIT for clarifications about What I find lacking (thanks to axblount for pointing that out) : unix tools like msys et al do not work as well as their native unic counterparts. Many scripts, installers require further configuration or do not work at all. For instance getting virtualenvwrapper to work is not very straightforward. virtualbox: ideally I would like to use windows software (photoshop, sublime text 2) seamlessly with linux. I mostly use a FTP client atm to move over files edited on the windows side which is a tedious process.

• Very slow write access to SSD disks on some Asus P8Z77 motherboards

  I have Asus P8Z77-V LK motherboard, that ran Mint 13 (based on Ubuntu 12.04) just perfectly, but recently I've tried to install Mint 17 and noticed abysmal write performance. Write speed on SSD disk was about 1.5MB/sec, when it's supposed to be in 150-250MB/sec range. For write testing I've used dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=10M count=10 while booted up from LiveCD. I have also tested the read speed with hdparm -tT /dev/sda and got about 440MB/sec -- that's normal. I can tell, the read performance has not degraded at all and is not an issue here. Since I had a few different SSD disks and few motherboards, I've tested and tested and here are results: Asus P8H77 works fine with Mint13, has very slow write speed starting from Mint14. Asus P8Z77-V LK works with Mint13, has very slow write speed starting from Mint14. Asus P8Z77-V PRO works with Mint13, and works just fine with Mint14, 15, 16 and 17. The only difference between "PRO" version and others is that it has extra SATA controller onboard (in addition to the Z77 chipset SATA controller) providing extra 2 SATA ports. SSD disks work fine with "PRO" version when connected to the native SATA ports as well as to the ports provided by extra SATA controller, so this does not look like a hardware issue. As far as I can tell, there's something changed in the kernel while going from 3.2 to 3.5, that affects the detection of onboard SATA controller for Asus P8*77 motherboards, that screws up the write speed for SSD drives. Could anyone shed some light on how to fix this issue or, possibly, give a pointer to a more suitable place to ask this question?

• Struggling to get set up with JOGL2.0

  I guess that Game Dev' is a more sensible place for my problem then SO. I did have JOGL1.1 set up and working, but I soon discovered that it did not support the latest OpenGL, so I started work on upgrading to JOGL2.0 it's not gone too well. Firstly, is it worth me trying to get JOGL to work, or should I just move over to LWJGL? I am fairly comfortable with OpenGL (via C++) and from what I did get working with JOGL1.1, I seem to be OK adapting to it. Assuming that I stick with JOGL, am I foolish for trying to use JOGL2.0? From what I can gather, JOGL2.0 is still in beta, but I am willing to go with it as I want to make use of the latest OpenGL I can. I have been using the Eclipse IDE and have set up a user library for JOGL, here is a screen shot of the configuration and I have added this user library to my own Eclipse project. the system variable %JOGL_HOME% points to "C:\Users\edacosh\Downloads\JOGL2.0" so that should work fine. Now, the problem I actually having, when I try to run my code, on the line GLProfile glp = GLProfile.getDefault(); The code stops with the following message...
