• ASP.NET: How to initialize when *user control* is initially loaded

  I have an ASP.NET user control that I'm embedding in another user control. This works fine. I need to know the best logic/method for detecting when the control is loaded. In other words, I have some display initialization logic that needs to run when the control is initially displayed. Surely there is a pattern for this. The typical method is to put (!IsPostBack) logic in the Page_Load method of the control. This works great until you end up with a state when the Parent page has already posted back many times. My user control gets added to the page but its display does not intialize properly. I'm hoping to find a way that keeps this logic inside the control, versus various hacking around in the codebehind of the parent page.

• Best ASP.NET reporting engine with custom reports creation ability

  We need to choose the reporting engine for our ASP.NET application. The main functional requirement is an ability for end users (not programmers, just normal users) to create custom reports. We will be using SQL Server as a database so I am aware of some options: SQL Server Reporting services, Crystal Reports, Active Reports, even WindwardReports. But frankly speaking I've never used any of those except Reporting services and it's quite difficult to choose which one suits the best to customer needs of custom reports creation. Is it possible to get some pros and cons for these options or at least your advice on what would be better to use in this case. Thanks a lot.

• How to catch HttpAntiForgeryException in ASP.NET MVC

  I'm using the AntiForgeryToken in my ASP.NET MVC forms. If I deactivate cookies in my browser and send the from, I'd get following error message: A required anti-forgery token was not supplied or was invalid. How can I prevent this message from showing? I would prefer redirecting the user to another page. I've activated customErrors and included this HandleError in my controller: [HandleError(ExceptionType=typeof(HttpAntiForgeryException), View="Index")] public class MyController : Controller { ... } The HandleError is ignored. Has anyone got a solution?

• Image gallery control for ASP.Net with filtering capabilities

  I'm writing an ASP.Net application which needs to display a large number of thumbnails, preferably in a paginated format. These thumbnails will be stored on the server's hard disk, but will have their filenames listed in a SQL Server database. What I want to do is to be able to filter the images being displayed based on criteria within the database. I've looked at the NotesForGallery control, which I really like, but it doesn't seem to have a way to do that. --if I'm wrong, please correct me. Are there any other image gallery type controls, preferably free, that can do what I need? I'm hoping someone can recommend a control or solution that will point me in the right direction.   If I understand it right the new ACT ComboBox Control is Bound once to a given Datasource. But the count of the records I want to bind is very large. So I want to load the content of the ComboBox List via Ajax after the user typed in a few charachters. So at page load the combobox list should be empty and if something is typed in the list is loaded with the typed text as search text.   Hello. My application is a product which will have reporting capabilities. The product, when in production, is expected to have several ad-hoc report defined by the end users. I am looking for a platform that can be tailored to harness the business entities and extend reporting capabilities (definition & execution) to the end user. Here are some constraints: From the usability standpoint, I like what MS Access reports offer. But of course it is not suitable for the target web application. However, it certainly is a source of inspiration usability wise. Cost is a constraint. So something recommended from open source world will be appreciated. Otherwise too I'd like to know. The product in question is somewhat 'generic' in nature. Mine is a ASP.Net platform.

  In the Script documents that asp.net automatically generates how can I surround the whole generated scripts with try/catch statement to avoid 'Microsoft JScript Compilation error' My issue is: i got a DevExpress control (ASPxGridView) that added and set-up in run time, since i activated the grouping functionality in the grid I still get JS error says ';' expected whenever i use (click) on one of grouping/sorting abilities, I activated script Debugging for IE, in the JS code turns out that there is no missing ';' and once i click ignore for the error msg that VS generates every thing works fine, and surly end-user can't see this msg so i figured out if i try/catch the script that may help avoid this error. • Best way to implement a 404 in ASP.NET

  I'm trying to determine the best way to implement a 404 page in a standard ASP.NET web application. I currently catch 404 errors in the Application_Error event in the Global.asax file and redirect to a friendly 404.aspx page. The problem is that the request sees a 302 redirect followed by a 404 page missing. Is there a way to bypass the redirect and respond with an immediate 404 containing the friendly error message? Does a web crawler such as Googlebot care if the request for a non existing page returns a 302 followed by a 404?

  Hi I am developing a web application which has form based authentication. All pages needs to be authenticated except AboutUs and ContactUs pages. I configured everything correct except AboutUs and ContactUs pages. Since I am denying all users in authorization section, application is redirecting even if the customer browse AboutUs and ContactUs pages. • What would you like to see in an beginner's ASP.NET security book

  This is a shameless information gathering exercise for my own book. One of the talks I give in the community is an introduction to web site vulnerabilities. Usually during the talk I can see at least two members of the audience go very pale; and this is basic stuff, Cross Site Scripting, SQL Injection, Information Leakage, Cross Site Form Requests and so on. So, if you can think back to being one, as a beginning web developer (be it ASP.NET or not) what do you feel would be useful information about web security and how to develop securely? I will already be covering the OWASP Top Ten (And yes this means stackoverflow will be in the acknowledgements list if someone comes up with something I haven't thought of yet!)   Personally I've been working for years with Telerik's RadControls and DevExpress ASP.NET controls. IMHO they both produce quite a lot HTML overhead on the client side thus for that I've never been highly pleased with them. I also know about Infragistics, ComponentOne, ComponentArt, etc. How are these? I'd assume they are not much different than those I mentioned. Which (commercial) controls suite generates the most compact HTML on the client side? Do you have any recommendations?

  Hello, The question I'm asking is kind of subjective. I've seen twice, while exercising with real projects such as StoreFront, both Repository and Services. Sometimes they can just be folders or projects attached to the solution. But they contain classes and interfaces. So, I'd like to know what goes to the repository and what goes to the services. So far, I was familiar with repositories (we put methods and properties in the repository to reduce the complexity in the controller). How about the services? So, ASP.NET MVC: What's the difference in concept between Service and Repository? (Maybe none) My question is Kind of subjective, but I'd like to make sure that I'm not missing anything. I know that i can use the HTML HELPER (.labelfor(.. .inputTextFor(... ) ..but i don't like to write the html tags around the fields and labels ( ... ) I want that all the form in my application look similar and, if a change is needed i want to make it in one place ( ex in the "FormComponentFactory()" for example ) I created my own FormComponent but i find myself reinvent the wheel..

• Redirect away from HTTPS with ASP.NET MVC App

  I'm using ASP.NET MVC 2 and have a login page that is secured via HTTPS. To ensure that the user always accesses those pages via SSL, I've added the attribute [RequiresHttps] to the controller. This does the job perfectly. When they have successfully logged in, I'd like to redirect them back to HTTP version. However, there isn't a [RequiresHttp] attribute and I'm struggling to get my head around how I might achieve this. The added (potential) complication is that the website when in production is hosted at the route of the domain, but for development and testing purposes it is within a sub directory / virtual directory / application. Am I over-thinking this and is there an easy solution staring me in the face? Or is it a little more complex?

• ASP.NET OutPutCache VaryByParam and VaryByHeader with AJAX

  I'm trying to do some caching using VaryByParam AND VaryByHeader. When an AJAX request comes in I return a partial XHTML. When a regular request comes in I send the partial XHTML page with header / footer. I tried to cache the page by doing: [OutputCache( Duration = 5, VaryByParam = "nickname,page", VaryByHeader = "X-Requested-With" )] However this doesn't work... if I do a regular request first then run the AJAX call I get the full cached page instead of the partial and vice-versa. Seems like VaryByHeader is being ignored. Is it because X-Requested-With is omitted on normal requests? Or perhaps it's doing VaryByParam OR VaryByHeader? My obvious way around this is for AJAX requests to call a different method which only returns partial pages, however I'd like to avoid that if possible. I'm using ASP.NET MVC 1.0 with the OutputCacheAttribute.

  I'm thinking of a way of creating a local backup for the pages I will be linking to from my site. This would be text-only, similar to Google's 'Copy' feature on the search pages. The idea is to be sure that the pages I would reference to, or cite from, do not dissapear from the Web in the near future. I know I could just keep local copies, but I will have A LOT of citations. What would be the best way of achieving this in ASP.NET? Some custom caching in database?

• Optimize loading an XAP file with an asp.net website

  I've been developing a game using Silverlight 4 and silversprite (http://silversprite.codeplex.com/) This game is HEAVILY content dependent, using a lot of audio and images. My content folder is around 90 mbs worth of stuff. And because of that, my XAP file is around 60 MB, and takes 5 minutes to download from the website before any user can start playing. I am using Visual Web Developer 2010 to create my site and load the XAP. Is there a way where I can take content out of my XAP and put it in my ASP.net site project? Or perhaps upload my content files to the site's storage? This would make my XAP file much quicker to download. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks!

  Currently I am using ViewData or TempData for object persistance in my ASP.NET MVC application. However in a few cases where I am storing objects into ViewData through my base controller class, I am hitting the database on every request (when ViewData["whatever"] == null). It would be good to persist these into something with a longer lifespan, namely session. Similarly in an order processing pipeline, I don't want things like Order to be saved to the database on creation. I would rather populate the object in memory and then when the order gets to a certain state, save it. So it would seem that session is the best place for this? Or would you recommend that in the case of order, to retrieve the order from the database on each request, rather than using session? Thoughts, suggestions appreciated. Thanks Ben

  Hello, I am trying to read data from excel file in asp.net. I have added the connection string to webConfig file: <add name="xls" connectionString="Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=HPM_DB.xls;Extended Properties=Excel 8.0"/> But it shows me an errormessage when I run this query: string query = "Select * from [IO_Definition$]"; IO_Definition is the name of the spreadsheet in my excel file. I also added the excel file to the App_Data folder of the website. The error is: The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object 'IO_Definition$'. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly. The thing is, when I write the absolute path of the excel file in the connectionString it does work. Is there anyway I can make it work without writing the absolute path? Thanks, Greg

  Dear Programmers, When my Application face a long-time process, i.e fetch a query (SELECT a, b, c FROM d) This query needs 10 seconds to be completed in the MSSQL Management Studio, but when the ASP.NET application try to fetch it, it refuse to return any response to any other requests made on that Server. I am hosting my Application on VPS Server with good specifications, and I am giving this example the (SELECT a, b, c FROM d) just to tell you the issue, it can be any process, maybe processing a movie, or even fetching some data through external API that is experiencing some slow-down,or whatever. Any help or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

  I am working on an ASP.NET MVC based CMS that presents a rather extreme case. The system must allow the user to add custom content types based on different fields, and for every field, one can add options and validations. The thing is that everything is stored in a complex DB and extracted at runtime using LINQ. I am pretty fresh with ASPNET MVC so the following dilemma came to mind How should I make the content creation view so that form helpers are not predefined int he view code but are loaded based on the type of the field ? Do I have to create a factory class that checks the value of the type property of the field, and then returns a helper based on that or there's a better way to do it. This one seems pretty rigid to me , because anytime I make a change in the Fieldtypes table, I will have to make sure to create a check for that new type too.

  I have to import the contents of a spreadsheet in my asp.net project. The code behind is c#. I figured out how to locate the spreadsheet on the user's computer and how to import the data from a given worksheet into a datable. The problem is I may not know the name of the worksheet ahead of time. I want to present the user with a list of available worksheets and have them pick one. That is the piece I don't know how to do. • ASP.net Text Box Enter button pressed hell

  Basically I have an asp.net website with login and search pages. Currently, I have no idea why, when ever a user hits enter in either of the login text boxes (user name/password) or in the Seach text box, the website is redirected to the default page. I have no idea why this is happening, I've tried setting defaultButton on both the panel containing the search and the login panel but that doesnt seem to work. I've also tried catching the key press event with javascript which isnt working either. I have no idea what event is being fired and why, or why it seems to override everything I try to do. Anyone seen anything like this before?
