• Trash Destination Adapter

  The Trash Destination and this article came from early experiences of using SSIS and community feedback at the time. When developing a package it is very useful to have a destination adapter that does nothing but consume rows with no setup requirement. You often want run a package part way through development, or just add a path so you can set a Data Viewer. There are stock tasks that can be used, but with the Trash Destination all columns are treated as selected automatically (usage type of read-only), so the pipeline knows they are required. It is also obvious that this is for development or diagnostic purposes, and is clearly not a part of the functional design of the package. It is also ideal for just playing around and exploring concepts in SSIS, and is often used in conjunction with the Data Generator Source. Using these two components it is easy to setup a test of an expression in the Derived Column Transformation for example. The Data Generator Source provides some dummy data, and the Trash Destination allows you to anchor the output path and set a Data Viewer to examine the results. It can also be used when performance tuning packages. It is a consistent and known quantity that has no external influences, so it is ideal as a destination when breaking the data flow into sections to isolate a bottleneck. The adapter is really simple to use and requires no setup. Simply drop it onto the pipeline designer and use it to terminate your data flow path. Installation The component is provided as an MSI file which you can download and run to install it. This simply places the files on disk in the correct locations and also installs the assemblies in the Global Assembly Cache as per Microsoft’s recommendations. You may need to restart the SQL Server Integration Services service, as this caches information about what components are installed, as well as restarting any open instances of Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) / Visual Studio that you may be using to build your SSIS packages. Finally, for 2005/2008, you will have to add the transformation to the Visual Studio toolbox manually. Right-click the toolbox, and select Choose Items.... Select the SSIS Data Flow Items tab, and then check the Trash Destination transformation in the Choose Toolbox Items window. This process has been described in detail in the related FAQ entry for How do I install a task or transform component? We recommend you follow best practice and apply the current Microsoft SQL Server Service pack to your SQL Server servers and workstations. • Thunderbird uses the wrong browser

  I'm unable to make Thunderbird open the default browser. In the browser preferences, Chromium is selected as the default browser. It's also selected in "Default Applications" in System Settings. In Thunderbird, I read "Chrome (Default)" which is wrong on all levels: Chrome itself complains that it's not the default browser when I click a link inside Thunderbird. In all other places, that I could find, Chromium is the default Here is what I tried: I used update-alternatives --config x-www-browser to select chromium-browser as well (see How do I change the default browser?). And even when I select a different browser from the list in the Thunderbird preferences, it still opens Chrome. My current solution is to create a link from /usr/bin/google-chrome to chromium-browser. How can I force Thunderbird to use the browser I want??? EDIT I also updated gnome-www-browser (update-alternatives --config gnome-www-browser) after feedback from roadmr but that didn't help. At least sensible-browser opens Chromium, now, but Thunderbird is stubborn.

• What skills should a developer/tester learn in order to move into a permanent Systems Analysis role?

  I have been with a software services firm for 5 years and have fallen into a "jack of all trades" role, which I am looking to move out of. I've spent about 1 year each in programming (VB/VB.NET), application support, systems analysis, and most recently, software testing, which in my current position is all manual. I've really lost interest in the programming and testing roles; I would prefer a position where I get to work more with people, such as systems analysis. I even got a chance to be a trainer at the same company for a few months, a temporary position which I enjoyed very much. Given that most of my real experience is with software, support, and testing, what knowledge areas and skills should I focus on learning and mastering in order to make myself an attractive candidate for a permanent position as a business/systems analyst?

• SQL Server devs–what source control system do you use, if any? (answer and maybe win free stuff)

  Recently I noticed a tweet from notable SQL Server author and community dude-at-large Steve Jones in which he asked how many SQL Server developers were putting their SQL Server source code (i.e. DDL) under source control (I’m paraphrasing because I can’t remember the exact tweet and Twitter’s search functionality is useless). The question surprised me slightly as I thought a more pertinent question would be “how many SQL Server developers are not using source control?” because I have been doing just that for many years now and I simply assumed that use of source control is a given in this day and age. Then I started thinking about it. “Perhaps I’m wrong” I pondered, “perhaps the SQL Server folks that do use source control in their day-to-day jobs are in the minority”. So, dear reader, I’m interested to know a little bit more about your use of source control. Are you putting your SQL Server code into a source control system? If so, what source control server software (e.g. TFS, Git, SVN, Mercurial, SourceSafe, Perforce) are you using? What source control client software are you using (e.g. TFS Team Explorer, Tortoise, Red Gate SQL Source Control, Red Gate SQL Connect, Git Bash, etc…)? Why did you make those particular software choices? Any interesting anecdotes to share in regard to your use of source control and SQL Server? To encourage you to contribute I have five pairs of licenses for Red Gate SQL Source Control and Red Gate SQL Connect to give away to what I consider to be the five best replies (“best” is totally subjective of course but this is my blog so my decision is final ), if you want to be considered don’t forget to leave contact details; email address, Twitter handle or similar will do. To start you off and to perhaps get the brain cells whirring, here are my answers to the questions above: Are you putting your SQL Server code into a source control system? As I think I’ve already said…yes. Always. If so, what source control server software (e.g. TFS, Git, SVN, Mercurial, SourceSafe, Perforce) are you using? I move around a lot between many clients so it changes on a fairly regular basis; my current client uses Team Foundation Server (aka TFS) and as part of a separate project is trialing the use of Team Foundation Service. I have used SVN extensively in the past which I am a fan of (I generally prefer it to TFS) and am trying to get my head around Git by using it for ObjectStorageHelper. What source control client software are you using (e.g. TFS Team Explorer, Tortoise, Red Gate SQL Source Control, Red Gate SQL Connect, Git Bash, etc…)? On my current project, Team Explorer. In the past I have used Tortoise to connect to SVN. Why did you make those particular software choices? I generally use whatever the client uses and given that I work with SQL Server I find that the majority of my clients use TFS, I guess simply because they are Microsoft development shops. Any interesting anecdotes to share in regard to your use of source control and SQL Server? Not an anecdote as such but I am going to share some frustrations about TFS. In many ways TFS is a great product because it integrates many separate functions (source control, work item tracking, build agents) into one whole and I’m firmly of the opinion that that is a good thing if for no reason other than being able to associate your check-ins with a work-item. However, like many people there are aspects to TFS source control that annoy me day-in, day-out. Chief among them has to be the fact that it uses a file’s read-only property to determine if a file should be checked-out or not and, if it determines that it should, it will happily do that check-out on your behalf without you even asking it to. I didn’t realise how ridiculous this was until I first used SVN about three years ago – with SVN you make any changes you wish and then use your source control client to determine which files have changed and thus be checked-in; the notion of “check-out” doesn’t even exist. That sounds like a small thing but you don’t realise how liberating it is until you actually start working that way. Hoping to hear some more anecdotes and opinions in the comments. • Is traditional JavaScript image pre-loading taboo

  I remember the good-old-days (not really) back when I was still sucking the teet of Dreamweaver to build websites and the lure of playing copypasta with fancy built-in scripts (ex, image-swap) was like black magic. I'm pretty far removed from that now days but I was adapting a small site from it's original FrontPage (::cringe::) format to a standard HTML/CSS implementation and couldn't help wondering... should I should re-implement the JavaScript image pre-loading into the current version? Or, is there a better way? I don't want to block the page from loading by requiring the user to request all the assets withing the page by using the traditional JavaScript pre-loader method. I value giving the user something to look at ASAP, and there's some potential harm to my Google mojo by doing so. Is there a cleaner solution to prevent unnecessary page-reflows during loading? Such as, setting the static width/height dimensions through a CSS style attribute on the image element.

• XAF DSL Tool Needs a new Team Lead

  I have enjoyed my time on this project and have used it in several production projects.  However, with the enhancements in Visual Studio 2010 and the Entity Framework, the DSL tool doesn’t make sense for me to support at this time.  With that said, I am looking for someone who has interest to continue the project if they so desire.  I have moved my attention to creating a new project at Entity Framework Extensions for XAF.  We are converting the current DSL tool into the Entity Framework extensions.  The same code generation and everything else work.  However, the visual design surface is so much easier to work with.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  Also, please take a moment to look at the new project.  This is where all my effort going forward will be focused. • Unity 2d support dropped in 12.10, what now?

  So its been announced. Ubuntu is dropping unity 2d support. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't for two things that are important to me. 1) A working system Unity is nice, i try to use it quite often. But it lags. 2) Support for older hardware. I also have old computers. You can imagine how they would work with unity if my current laptop is slog in Ubuntu. I guess i could use another desktop environment/ window manager , like switching to fluxbox. Anyone have any suggestion ideas/solutions on how to proceed with Ubuntu in the future? All insights welcome

• Why not Green Threads?

  Whilst I know questions on this have been covered already (e.g. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5713142/green-threads-vs-non-green-threads), I don't feel like I've got a satisfactory answer. The question is: why don't JVM's support green threads anymore? It says this on the code-style Java FAQ: A green thread refers to a mode of operation for the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in which all code is executed in a single operating system thread. And this over on java.sun.com: The downside is that using green threads means system threads on Linux are not taken advantage of and so the Java virtual machine is not scalable when additional CPUs are added. It seems to me that the JVM could have a pool of system processes equal to the number of cores, and then run green threads on top of that. This could offer some big advantages when you have a very number large of threads which block often (mostly because current JVM's cap the number of threads). Thoughts?

• What 'ordinary' packages does 'sudo apt-get purge wine*' removes?

  Ok, here's one silly question - I've actually run that command trying to lose configuraion of current installation of wine, so I can install it from zero. I didn't quite read but I've noticed that some packages that 'shouldn't be uninstalled' were getting uninstalled, like compiz for example... Now, my problem is that I don't know what are the other packages that got uninstalled. I can't enter Ubuntu at all. Help, please. Command was sudo apt-get purge wine*. Thank you. Please be nice; I was really tired :)

• Can't access server on LAN new Router

  Earlier this week my roommates decided to change the router we are using for our home network. On the old router I had no problems accessing a laptop running Mint Linux over the network(SSH, FTP, and Shared Folders). However I am now not able to connect. I have verified the IP address of my Linux machine has not changed and I have no problems connecting to our NAS(WDMYCLOUD). The new router is a D-Link DIR-868L. PuTTY is giving me a Timed Out error(was giving me a EHOSTUNREACH before). Running Windows 8.1 the connecting laptop, but tried connecting using my phone via SSH did not work either. More information: Can ping the Linux machine from the router but not my computer. Pinging 192.168.0.111 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.0.102: Destination host unreachable. • Cannot Delete Item "Could Not Find This Item" issue

  A friend sent a long a file (a .rar) he wanted me to check out for him before he installed it. I downloaded it and unrared it with no problems, but it was full of .exe's instead of the intended contents (fonts) so I advised him to delete it immediately and not use. I then proceeded to do the same, but the folder simply will not delete. Oddly the files went fine, and I never ran anything, but this is what I'm seeing: Could not find this item This is no longer located in C:\Users\This_User\Desktop. verify the item's location and try again. I've tried the following things with no help: Using "Unlocker" to Unlock and delete Using move on reboot and rebooting Using PendMoves (from sysinternals) and rebooting Elevating a cmd line, doing a dir /x to get the short name of the folder, and then del 'shortna~1' Moving the folder to a new folder and then trying to delete the parent folder I'm on Windows 7 RTM, very fresh install. Any thoughts? Update: Just to confirm, I've run Hijack this and half a dozen other malware detectors, and everything came back clean (no extra processes, no other obvious badness). Rebooting in safe mode didn't help either.

• Tips/Process for web-development using Django in a small team

  We're developing a web app uing Django and we're a small team of 3-4 programmers — some doing the UI stuff and some doing the Backend stuff. I'd love some tips and suggestions from the people here. This is out current setup: We're using Git as as our SCM tool and following this branching model. We're following the PEP8 for your style guide. Agile is our software development methodology and we're using Jira for that. We're using the Confluence plugin for Jira for documentation and I'm going to be writing a script that also dumps the PyDocs into Confluence. We're using virtualenv for sandboxing We're using zc.buildout for building This is whatever I can think of off the top of my head. Any other suggestions/tips would be welcome. I feel that we have a pretty good set up but I'm also confident that we could do more. Thanks.

• Visual Programming paradigms

  As the number of "visual" OS's such as Android, iOS and the promised Windows 8 are becoming more popular, it does not seem to me that we programmers have new ways to code using these new technologies, due to a possible lack in new visual programming languages paradigms. I've seen several discussions about incompatibilities between the current coding development environment, and the new OS approaches from Windows 8, Android and other tablets OS's. I mean, today if we have a new tablet, it's almost a requirement for coding, to have, for instance, an external keyboard (due it seems to me it's very difficult to program using the touch screen), exactly because the coding assistance is not conceived to "write" thousands of lines of code. So, how advanced should be the "new" visual programming languages paradigms? Which characteristics these new paradigms would be required?

• Polygon count target range for MMO being released in 2 years

  What would a realistic poly count target range be for NPC and player models in a 3D MMO that will be released in 2 years? What about poly count target range for the entire camera view (environment, NPC and player meshes)? I read in some places that one should not aim too low if the game will come out in a couple years because technology is always advancing. If you can give some mesh poly stats on what other current MMOs / MMORPGs are running and future projections, that would be great. Thank you.

• Windows Vista Nested Desktop Folders Problem

  I have no idea how, nor when this happened, and it's started to really quite annoy me. When navigating through Explorer, by clicking on Icons I have C:\Users\Samuel\Desktop (Icon is the blue special Desktop icon), which contains the items I see on my Desktop. I then have the following folder: C:\Users\Samuel\Desktop (Icon is the standard yellow folder icon), which contains many program shortcuts, and is completely seperate from the other C:\Users\Samuel\Desktop Then in the Yellow Icon Desktop I have the sub-folder Desktop with the blue icon that is a direct mirror of the blue C:\Users\Samuel\Desktop folder (as in a new folder / file shows up in both). In explorer when I directly type C:\Users\Samuel\Desktop I am taken to the Yellow folder version. If I go to C:\Users\Samuel\Desktop\Desktop I am taken to the Blue folder version. Finally, from cmd cd'ing to C:\Users\Samuel\Desktop takes me to the Yellow folder version whilst C:\Users\Samuel\Desktop\Desktop takes me to the blue folder version. How on earth can I get rid of the yellow folder version leaving the blue C:\Users\Samuel\Desktop. I can't delete either as it says they're in use. UPDATE: Ok, so it looks like doing a dir from cmd lists only one Desktop folder - the Yellow one. In addition, it looks like I can't delete either of them (given that they both contain my 'Desktop'

• How to change ownership of a domain name from "missing" web designer

  Hi, We had a website produced a few years ago with a .ORG domain name. The site hadn't grown with our needs, so we've now got a new .co.uk site. Our intention was to transfer the .org address to the new site on completion. Our new site is to go live soon, but the original .ORG site has gone offline (hosting expired I believe as the expiry date for the .ORG is in 2012) and we now discover that the .ORG domain name is registered to the web designer and not to anyone in our organisation. The WHOIS information gives us the technical contact as discountasp.net. What are the steps we can take here? Our primary concern is getting the name servers changed (the current .ORG address goes nowhere) and ultimately we need to transfer ownership? The organisation in question is a community, non-profit organisation, so our pockets are not deep. Thanks in advance for any help. Stuart.

• SharePoint Backup/Restore without stsadm

  Due to problems we found with the restore of sites/site collections using stsadm (our tasks generated from workflows were not restored), we've taken a different route for backup/restore. We plan a major customization to our SP site and want to take a backup so we can rollback in case the install fails. In our System Testing (not production) environment, we've backed up the 12 hive, the virtual dir's that the IIS points to SharePoint, and the SharePoint databases in SQL (using SQL server to do the db backups). We have custom event handlers and workflows built with Visual Studio, and deploy the dlls to the GAC as version 2 (signed and versioned in Visual Studio). So when we deploy, the GAC will contain 2 versions of the workflows - version 1 and version 2. During the deploy we use SP stsadm features to install/activate the WF's. We also go to each library and add the new, version 2 WFs. This automatically sets the version 1 WF's to "Not Allow" new instances (which is what we want) and the version 2 as active - perfect so far. When we've completed the install, we then assume a failure and attempt to restore to the same machines (SharePoint on one server, SQL on another). We start by uninstalling the version 2 WF's from the GAC, reset IIS (to clear cache of these ver. 2 WF dlls'), restore the 12-hive and virtual directory folders, then restore the SQL dbs. This is all just as manual as you read it - no stsadm here. All seems to work after our restore, it appears the restore was successful - the mods we made to column names, data changes, etc during the install are all reverted back to the original pre-install state. With one exception. When we run a workflow, it always fails and the Logs in the 12-hive indicates the WF is still trying to use the version 2 of the dll (System.IO file not found error) We think we've backed up and restored all the moving pieces of Sharepoint but we're missing something here, does anybody have any ideas why the version 2 WF dlls are still being referenced eventhough we restored all the folders and db's of SharePoint? • Dlink DWA-556 Access point fails to start on 2.6.35-25 while 2.6.35-24 works. How can I do this with >2.6.35-24?

  I'm using hostapd to run an access point with a Dlink DWA-556 wireless N card. However, I can no longer get it to start when I use kernels greater than 2.6.35-24. Here's a log where I ran the uname -a&&hostapd -c <configfile> on the different kernel versions. I'm holding off upgrading to Natty because of this. What changed between the versions that would cause this? Should I report it as a bug?

• Enabling "AllowDualLinkModes" in xorg.conf

  I'm using a GeForce GT 620 (which is dual-link compatable) and a DVI-I dual-link splitter to try to have a desktop extended onto two monitors. At the moment when I plug in the monitors, only the monitor on the female VGA marked "1" gets a signal, and the other screen gets nothing and only one screen is detected by nvidia-settings. After reading around, I have realised that my graphics card probably comes with dual-link disabled by default, and I can enable it by adding an "AllowDualLinkModes" option to my xorg.conf. This is the current state of my xorg.conf Section "Device" Identifier "Default Device" Option "NoLogo" "True" EndSection Where do I put the line about AllowDualLinkModes? Do I create a new Section?   I am working on building a HTML5 RTS game, and my current state is that I am building the Campaign mode of the game, and want to define the gameplay (The Scoring, Unit Behaviors/Attributes). I am searching for links/articles/books about how to define the gameplay, for me this: The scoring Figuring out levels of control (in any RTS game, there is units, individuals and squads) Unit action/attributes/properties point timing (how long it will take to play?) Achievements ..etc I want to see how they usually define these areas in RTS games, I expect to see general document discussing this concept that I can use to build the gameplay. Any idea? Is my question clear or I need to provide more details?
