  • EFS - Find out what's encrypted

    Hi Since a few days when I start Windows Vista i get a Popup from "Encrypting File System" (coming from process efsui.exe) asking me to backup the certificate and key. I don't know what i did to get this message (The last SW i did install was google desktop). Now i'm wondering what directories or file are encrypted with EFS. Is there a way to found out?   • Control Less Window gets stuck in Win7

    Hi there is a dialer software (by ISP) that connects to my ISP's wi-fi network. Though it connects to the wi-fi network however a control-less windows gets stuck in the middle of the my win7 desktop screen and does not goes off. I cannot close it or minimize it as there are no controls on it. I want to know how to minimize or close the windows without killing the app via Task Manager. Regards, DK Jain.

  • Using a Blackberry Bold as an IP Modem on Windows 7

    I recently installed Windows 7 and now cannot use my Blackberry Bold as a modem (via a USB cable): When I query the modem it is successful. I have added the correct "at" commands. When I try connect it says "connecting modems" but then it times out with the following error: Error 638: The remote server is not responding in a timely fashion. I also have the latest desktop manager software installed.

  • How long should diskpart take?

    I am using diskpart to extend a drive that is actually a VHD. I've already extended the VHD. It's on Windows 2003 and the C drive doesn't contain the swap file and the available space is contiguous. However didn't see the Note about the Resource Kit diskpart for download is not for Windows 2003. So I did the extend using the Windows 2000 version. Not sure if this is the reason but Diskpart is sitting there now for about 15 minutes or so and it's only gotta extend by 10GB. Should it be taking this long? Am I asking for trouble now that I've used a Windows 2000 version of diskpart on a Windows 2003 machine (VM)?

    Scenario: I have a hard disk with a bootable sda1 partition and an Linux LVM. I seem to have corrupted the MBR? or Grub? not sure. I know it no longer boots and even with boot-repair and a Ubuntu live usb I was able to restore it. Following a "fix" with boot-repair I get "missing operating system" Can't i just reinstall grub or a new menu.lst?     looking to build a 10 node to eventually 50 node VDI solution. the only OS on the desktop will be ubuntu ( or some other linux ) looking for easy setup administration, and remote administration etc. will probably just use diskless PC as clients for now, but would want a solution that can accommodate thin-clients as well, and maybe there its just XDMCP from the server. must be completely open source ( no VMware ) thoughts ?

  • How to use new disk space after extend attached SAN disk

    I have extended the space of my SAN vDisk from 1TB to 1.2TB, but Windows Explorer doesn't show the new size. After resize the vdisk in the SAN Manager, the Disk Management utility shows the 200GB unallocated space, then I resized the partition to use the unallocated space to get a 1.2TB partition, the process was succesfully, but in the Windows File Explorer the disk still have 1TB of total space. Win version: Windows Storage Server Enterprise 2007. Do I need to restart the server? How can I use the new extra space without rebooting?

  • Microsoft Word files have weird icons suddenly?

    All of a sudden, my Microsoft Office files have the generic file icon, and it happens with Powerpoint and Word, but not Excel. I can open the files just fine, and I tried restarting my computer, creating new files, clicking F5 on the desktop, turning off my Windows XP theme patcher, and none of them worked, any ideas? EDIT: I've also noticed that it happened to the following programs: Windows Live Messenger, iTunes, and Skype, so not just MS Office. Yet, some are still fine like IE, Paint, GIMP, Paint.NET, a few web browsers, etc.

    I am looking for a video card to run three monitors, it could be hdmi, dvi or vga. I want the three monitors to show an extended desktop but as three different desktops with maybe different resolutions, so when i maximize something it should be maximized only in one monitor. The information seems confusing, I think eyefinity tricks the OS to make it looks like one big display. I am sure I dont want this. So my question(s) is, is there a video card in the market that support 3 displays without eyefinity? Or can I use an eyefinity enabled card ( with one active display port) to run three monitors and disable eyefinity from the driver settings or something?

Edit: On Win8 Aero was removed but the taskbar is transparent (the desktop background picture is slightly visible 'behind' the taskbar). When I'm using the taskbar to switch programs I don't like seeing artifacts 'bleeding-through', I find it distracting.

    I'm putting together a workbook for tracking a stock portfolio. The primary sheet contains a table with the list of the transactions. From this I would like to create an overview table on another sheet with only one row per unique stock symbol that includes things like cost basis, returns, etc. The problem is that nothing I've tried updates the overview table correctly when rows are added to the transaction table. The closest I've got is something like the following: http://www.get-digital-help.com/2009/04/14/create-a-unique-alphabetically-sorted-list-extracted-from-a-column/ However, this requires applying that formula to every cell in the primary column of the overview sheet. And even then the range of the table isn't extended down to include new rows as they become valid. Essentially I'm looking for a way that auto-adds rows to a table and copies the formula based on a different table changing without using VBA.   • Out of sync audio / video on Hackintohs

    I have a PC with OSx86 on it. (10.6.2) Under Leopard my videos worked great, but now with VLC the audio is all garbled and video is way too fast. In Quicktime X video is too fast. MPlayer OSX Extended plays videos fine, but doesn't support many codecs. I have a Geforce 9800 GTX with qe ci ocl... If theres no solution, then are there any other players for OS X that support a lot of codecs? I don't like Windows so that's not an option. Thanks

    When you press the v keyboard shortcut in Google Reader, it opens a new tab. Regardless of the setting "When a new tab or window is opened, make it active" setting (Under Preferences Tabs), it becomes the frontmost tab when opened. Is there a way to have all tabs open in the background, like when you Cmd+click? (I'm aware of other alternative solutions, such as Firefox which handles this correctly, or a desktop RSS such as NetNewsWire/Vienna which have an "open links in background" option, but I like Google Reader's interface and wish to continue using it)
