• scalability: when to use CDN?

  i've read about CDN but dont know exactly what it is for. lets say i've got an international social network (text and image content), and it's growing in traffic from different countries, do i have use of CDN? the picture i got from the sources i've read is that it copy your content and put it in many servers spread out over the world so that users will fetch it from the nearest point. does this mean that every server has a copy of my mysql database and the image files? is this the proper way to make your web service available for the world? cause how else could you set up a servers through out the world, contacting hosting companies for each country?

• Error "403 Forbidden" on Sharepoint Search Settings Page

  Hello I thought I had solved this nightmare by re-entering the values in my SSP properties set up, however accessing the Search Settings page error has reared it ugly head again. Please guys how do I get around this access denied issue. Thanks

• Collectd on ubuntu with perl plugin support

  For days I am struggling with enabling perl plugin support for collectd. I have installed colllectd 5.4.0 on a Aws ubuntu 13.04. Configured compiled. I have even installed libperl-dev. But when i run ./configure from collectd installation , it still says that "perl ....(needs libperl)" Now enabling the perl plugins from collectd.conf didnt help much. In logs i see that : plugin_load: Could not find plugin "perl" in /opt/collectd/lib/collectd and indeed there is not perl.so or whatever in that folder. Can someone help me out with that ?

• Did Firefox running in OSX get hacked

  When I try to do a google search in Firefox, I can't click on any of the links. They're just regular black text, not hyperlinks. I even tried safe mode and disabling all the plugins. I was running Firefox 12. I installed the current version over it and it's the same thing. Other browsers have not been affected. This is what it looks like. Edit: My firewall was turned off and I had several things running which are potential security holes. I turned on my firewall and closed all unnecessary ports. I also turned off Home Sharing. Then I restarted my computer. After that, Firefox works normally again. What do you think happened?

• Install 64-bit Ubuntu or 32-bit?

  I'll be receiving a new notebook in a few days and was planning on running Ubuntu on it as it's compatible and the notebook has no OS pre-installed. The specifications are: Core 2 Duo, T6600, 4 GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics. I know a year or two ago, running a 64-bit version of Ubuntu was not advised due to much of the applications and plugins (e.g. Flash) only running on 32-bit. Is this still the case? Would I get better performance with 64-bit Ubuntu since I have 4 GB of RAM? Are there any downsides anymore?

• Error when starting Outlook 2007 on Windows 7

  Every time I start Outlook 2007 SP2 on my Windows 7 box Outlook will look like its loading fine, then I get this error message: cannot start microsoft office outlook. cannot open the outlook window and outlook will close. I was able to get outlook to start by using outlook.exe /resetnavpane in the Start-Search box, a nice tip which I got from this social.microsoft.com page. But it didn't fix the problem since outlook is still complaining when it starts after a reboot. What can I do to get outlook to startup normally?

• SQL Server 2008 Install fails error reading etwcls.mof

  I receive the following error when trying to install Sql Server 2008 Standard on a Windows Server 2008 box. Error reading from file D:\x64\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\PFiles\SqlServr\MSSQL.X\MSSQL\Binn\etwcls.mof. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it. When searching the interwebs I only find information about compiling this file but not reading. The file exists in the location requested. I have run the WMIDiag tool and there doesn't seem to be any issues. I am not sure what else I can do to solve this issue and can't seem to find anything on the internet about it. • Extract tar with multiple tars inside?

  Is there a way to untar a file with multiple tars inside? It's suppose to just untar everything inside including untarring the tars inside the tar... With windows it does it, quite annoying I can't figure it out on linux...   I usually do my web dev on a production server, now i need to bring some work at home. I have installed XAMPP on my laptop and it seems to work perfectly fine. Most of my project involves CURL enabled, I need to make my xampp application to access the internet. Perhaps give it some IP address and Gateway. I've seen documentation how to enable CURL on xampp, yet I'm struggling to find how to make XAMPP to have internet access. I'm not asking how to access my XAMPP remotely, I'm simply asking how to give internet connection to xampp application for my CURL and other social network API to work.

• How to fix skipping/stuttering audio in Google Chrome

  If I play Google Music, or a Youtube video in the Chrome browser, and then open a new tab and start typing the address bar, the audio will quickly cut in and out as I am typing (with almost every letter I type). It also is choppy if I play the video and start typing in the start menu. I can not repeat this behavior using internet explorer. Based on that Im thinking that it maybe a problem with the version of flash Chrome is using but I'm not sure. Any ideas? Im running 32 bit windows 7, i.e. 9, and chrome 23.0 pc is a lenovo t43p. I have the latest sound drivers. i.e. is using flash 11.5.502. chrome is using : Adobe Flash Player - Version: 11.5.31.2 Only one (this) plugin is listed for flash in the chrome plugins list.

• Registering OCX on 64-bit Windows 7

  I want to use MSCOMM control in my MS Excel 2010 VBA. The control shall appear in Tools-> Additional Controls dialog box in VBE of MS Excel 2010. I am trying to register MSCOMM32.OCX on my 64-bit Windows 7 machine. However, as I try to register it using regsvr32 as shown in the command window below, I am getting shown error popup. What am I missing here? Why is this component not getting registered? Or this is not the correct way to include MSCOMM control in MS Excel VBA? • Is there a diff utility that allows you to exclude columns?

  For example, I have a text file, each line is a long string. I want to exclude 2 "segments" of this string, say columns 1-7 and 20-22. So the bottom 2 lines below would be a match: 123456789012345678901234567890 ------------------------------ xxxxxxxAAAAAAAAAAAAxxxBBBBBBBB yyyyyyyAAAAAAAAAAAAyyyBBBBBBBB I know WinMerge has a "IgnoreColumns" plugin but I have never go this working. In this example I would rename it IgnoreColumns_1-7, 20-22.dll, select it in the plugins menu, and choose "Pre-Differ." but it has never worked. I am going to be comparing huge files that I don't want to modify. I'm not opposed to stream editing them in the comparison with sed or something like that, but I would prefer not to modify the actual files. I have not chose to feed sed to diff yet just because I was hoping for for a more visual view of the data.

• Microsoft word slow switching and safe mode

  I don't know what I did, but recently when I opened Microsoft Word document, I experienced very slow app switch between it and other applications. When I start Word in Word's safe mode (as described here http://wordprocessing.about.com/od/troubleshootin1/qt/safemode.htm ), the issue disappears. Now I don't know where to find out which plugins were loaded that's causing the problem. Or where the normal.dot is if that's the problem. I'm on Windows 7 64 bit. Thanks.

• SSIS DSN Not Showing as ODBC Data Source

I found this which seemed promising: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000277 I was not able to delete the key but followed but I did what was suggested: "If unable to delete the key, double-click the key and erase the Data value entered. Once done, the value should read ' (value not set) '" However, after following the instructions my System DSN still does not appear as an option. The USER DSN however does show...has shown but does not work as I get a permissions error. Any ideas?

• How to efficiently merge a lot of vCard files for the same person?

  I currently have contact information at several places: old PDA's address book mobile phone's phone book (primarily name, phone number) email client's address book (primarily name, email) web mailer's address book (primarily name, email) instant messenger's contact list (primarily name, im, email, birthday) And there are several social or business networking sites on the Internet where contacts provide information about themselves, like LinkedIn or XING. All those sources can export as vCard, but as you might imagine, I get a lot of vCards for the very same contact that way. Are there any tools where I can import them and then merge them (it may ask me which phone number is more current in case of field clashes of course)? Bonus points if it can track which information I have discarded so when I re-export all information from one of the sources I can't import to (networking sites), it won't ask me again if I want to overwrite phone number of person X with the same ancient number... I hope you understand what I try to accomplish, if not just ask :-)

• HP Compaq T20 Thin Clients & Windows Server 2008 R2: RDP Disconnects instantly.

  Hello, I have some HP Compaq T20 Thin Clients connecting to a Windows Server 2003. Now I want to upgrade to 2008 R2, so I tested a trial installation with remote desktop in administration mode. So I try to connect my T20 to the server and... It doesn't matter if I turn off encryption or not it disconnects with an generic error instantly. The T20s have Windows CE embedded with RDP 5.2 installed. Out of curiosity I tried Windows Server 2008 (no R2) and it worked! I tried the same with a Windows 7 machine set up with- no work. I can not update the T20s to Windows NT embedded for example because they only have a low amount of flash memory. It seems the "new" version of RDP coming from Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2 is completely incompatible with the older 5.2 version. • Can the Gimp split an image into multiple images?

  I've been scanning a lot of photos recently, more than one at a time. I now have multiple jpegs, each containing multiple photos. Can I, using Gimp, "split" a jpg into 3 smaller files ? What I used to do is : copy the jpg 3 times, and crop a different picture in each copy. There must be an easier way to do this ! EDIT : Is there a plugin that can do that ? I've looked around, but only found plugins that "cut" an image into pieces of equal size.
